Empty Swimming Pools Can Be Dangerous, Too. One night, after my little children finished swimming in our baby pool, I asked my son to let out the water and stand the pool against the wall of the house.

The next morning, on a day that the temperature reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit, I was sitting with my children outside, waiting for their day camp buses. My two-year-old son wandered to the back of the house “probably “ to play with bikes or the swings. Knowing that the area is safely enclosed with nothing dangerous there, I did not check up on him for about fifteen minutes, until my little girls each went on their respective vans and buses to day camp. As soon as they left, I went to the back and started calling my son’s name. Seeing the baby pool lying face-down on the grass (and wondering why my tenyear-old son hadn’t leaned it against the wall as I had instructed him to), I picked it up, a heavy-duty plastic pool. My two-year-old was lying there face-down on the grass, crying and sweating profusely. His hair and clothing were soaked through; his face was purple and sweaty. I shudder to think what might have happened had he been trapped there longer.

Apparently, the heavy pool had been leaning against the wall and had fallen on top of him, and he had had no way of picking it up! B”H, a tragedy was averted, but I am still shaking as I write these words. Dear mothers! Our

YOURVOICE In Search of Gluten-Free Products

Editor’s Bulletin

(Issue #12) Regarding the letter addressing the need for gluten-free options in Monsey eateries, I relate with the letter writer’s frustration and distress. While awareness of celiac disease and glutensensitivity has been progressively increasing, it is still very much under the radar here in Monsey.

As the mother of a young teenager with celiac disease, I deal with this issue frequently. How I wish I could take my daughter out for lunch, sometimes just for the convenience of it, and other times, as a special treat. Since Jerusalem Pizza (which offered GF pizza) closed, there is not one local eatery that caters to the gluten intolerant population.

In fact, even dishes that do not contain gluten, such as French fries, are off limits, because of cross-contamination from the cooking and serving utensils.

The need is great- I think that restaurant owners are unaware how many people are on gluten-free diets nowadays.

Restaurants: Please consider adding gluten-free options to your menu. You will be doing us a tremendous service- but you may be surprised to see that you are doing yourself a favor too!

A Sticky Situation We got many inquiries for the definition of the word “glew” listed in last week’s boggle winner’s list. “Glew” is the obsolete variant of “glue,” and since it was in the MerriamWebster’s online dictionary, we gave the winner credit for it.

As we are seeing inconsistencies among the different editions of Merriam Webster, please be advised that we will only be checking the words against the Merriam-Webster’s 2014 (unabridged) table dictionary.

Due to the overwhelming amount of submissions, we are often bogged with faxes at zero hour. Please fax your list early enough, as we will only consider submissions faxed or emailed before the deadline, Sunday at 8:00 pm.

Look over your word lists carefully, as any list which has two words not found in the Merriam-Webster table dictionary will be disregarded.

There’s a secret group of twenty of Monsey’s strongest and most selfless men. A group who has surrendered the comfort of rest to watch over our community, your homes, your children, your assets, your life.

Who are those twenty men?

They are between the ages of 23-40, young fathers of growing families, dedicated husbands and sons.

They give up their night’s sleep and they learn.

All night.

What do they do by day? They learn by day, too!

Walking into 2 Howard Drive, you will find them working hard, sweating, making sure that Monsey is safe. Starting at 12:45 promptly, they each immerse themselves in the sea of Torah.

Some learn on their own, others bechavrusa; yet some others participate in the Dirshu program.

A dayan and maggid shiur are on premises to answer sheilos and discuss questions.

Welcome to the World of Kollel Chatzos.

The basic concept of night learning is as ancient as Torah itself. The world exists because of Torah, and to sustain it, there has to be roundthe-clock learning. The Zohar and many other gedolim of the past have praised those who learn nightly, since their Torah upkeeps the worlds and adds protection to their community.

The Kaf Hachaim writes that if someone cannot learn at night, he should pay a talmid chacham to learn instead and he will merit special brocha in his life. That’s why yidden across the globe call 1855 CHATZOS to sponsor nightly learning on their behalf. Next to every talmid chacham is a list of the sponsors’ names that they keep in mind while learning. The lists are short so that the talmidei chachamim can truly focus on each one.

If a name is taken off the list, they will notice and even ask about whether they were helped.

After several consecutive hours of learning, they gather for davening at daybreak. A shacharis, after so many hours of sacrifice, is priceless. The Kollel Members daven again for the names on their list.

How It All Began When founder Rabbi Nechemye Hoffman was learning in The Mir as a bochur, he became acquainted with a talmid chacham and bal mechaber who introduced him to the life-changing world of Zohar. He was intrigued.

“I noticed that the mention of Torah at chatzos haleilah is one of Rabbi Shimon’s most oft discussed topics.”

Rabbi Hoffman decided to try it.

He began waking up every midnight and immediately felt the special kedusha. But then he got married and joined a day kollel. “I couldn’t forget about it. I missed the night time learning immensely.” After hearing so much about it, his wife urged him to open his own kollel with the little money they had saved up. Within two weeks, fifteen yungeleit were enrolled.

Behind Every Man The kollel life is challenging, but imagine a kollel life when the man of the house learns at night, as well. “It’s not easy,” Mindy, a kollel wife and mother of four, says. “But we signed up for it because it’s the greatest gift I can give to my husband.” When someone applies to join the kollel, his wife has to sign that she agrees to this decision.

Understanding the toll this takes on these wives, the kollel founded a support group for the women to give advice and share their experiences.They also give discount coupons for the women Erev Yom Tov. “We never forget

A: After the first zman, the initial funds were exhausted.

Once, meeting a new father, I mentioned the Kollel. The father gave me $30, so that the kollel should learn on the night of the child’s vachnacht. I realized that this was my solution to continue the growth of the Kollel. Soon enough, word spread and we had to set up a proper office to handle the volume of calls,.

From there we grew to four locations and plans to roll out more soon.

Q: What is the most memorable story in your mind?

A: Two years ago, we had two top talmidei chachamim leave the kollel since their families grew and they joined the workforce to provide for their families. I met them a couple of month later and asked them if they felt more rested.

Both complained that they don’t accomplish nearly as much as they used to. This story reminds me that being part of Kollel Chatzos actually changes your day, not only your night!

Q: What is your vision for Kollel Chatzos?

A: Simple. A kollel in every city.

He tells a story of a rich Los Angeles businessman who called the kollel because his expecting wife was diagnosed with cancer. When do I notice that my legs and my rib cage exist?

My arms; I wrap my tefillin around them so tightly, they often develop welts. It’s the way my father put them on me the first time, and so I continue to do. My toes; how could I not feel them when my shoes are small and rubbed out from the insides and stub the ends of my toenails? But I’ve never felt as alive as I did when I delivered that stove to a home in Bayit Vegan, with a nameplate on the door that read “Baum” and a kitchen that boasted pasta mixed with mayonnaise and small pieces of fleisch. I had to haul that machine up three flights.

We got into his truck and continued making our deliveries. In some places, we only got out and went to fix someone’s broken pipe.

Rachamim has all these tools and glue and tape and what not. I felt the elation that comes with heavy physical labor, the sort where an aura

of heat forms a halo around the body. So it went all afternoon until only a wisp of day was still left. After our sixth house, I asked Rachamim, “Isn’t it time for Minchah?”

For a few moments, I circled the street, not finding a single shul. How different it was here from where I lived. How secluded we must keep our children, I thought exhaustedly, because the dangers — shopping, food, people smoking and laughing at motorcycle stoops — were so close.

Then I spotted a kiosk owner, his head completely shaven. He was donning a shiny yarmulke on his head. “Are you going to daven?” I asked.

“Of course, what else would I be doing?”

Soon I noticed other men, their sandaled feet rough from constantly doing the work I did today. They were gathering under the concrete roof between the stores, manikins, and blaring radios. I joined their minyan; together, we davened to Hashem.

I turned to my new friend, the kiosk manager. “Is there a cup of water I can have?”

He brought me one, and I drank heartily, so he brought me another one. There was some kibitzing about the chareidim so I returned the favor about them, too. Then it was time to go, because the sun always rushes offstage as soon as her duties are done, and I didn’t want to be caught in the dark ravine, alone.

“I can drive you home and meet your family,” offered Mr. Kiosk, whose name was Itzik.

“Ah, no,” gripped me.

I started walking. From behind me, I heard the clanking and bang of Itzik’s shutters rolling down where before had been a blaring radio. I continued toward the edge of the neighborhood; headed home. I heard Itzik gun the motor of his bike. He pulled up beside me. “Hop on.

I hesitated, unsure. But he was waiting, his feet on the ground keeping the motorcycle balanced, the engine blowing earsplitting bursts. Gingerly, I climbed on behind him.

“Hold on tight.”

Herbed Scrambled Eggs Just a few different ingredients, and a whole new dish emerges!

Simple herbs make a world of a difference in this buttery scrambled egg dish. These eggs serve about five people, which makes it an ideal dish for a summery get-together brunch.

10 eggs 1 cup milk 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon oil

Glazed Cheese Croissants

These croissants are perfect for breakfast or brunch. They don’t have any cheesy filling in them, but the dough is chock full of cottage cheese, which creates flaky layers, just like a real croissant.

Croissants: 1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature ¾ cup cottage cheese (not low fat) 1 cup flour ¼ teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley 1 tablespoon minced fresh dill 1 tablespoon minced scallions

Glaze: ½ cup confectioner’s sugar 2 teaspoons milk

1. Heat oil in a large frying pan.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper. Add the eggs to the pan and cook them over low heat, stirring constantly with a rubber spatula.

3. When eggs are just done, shut the flame and add the butter, parsley, dill, and scallions.

Stir until the butter is melted. Serve hot.

1. In a large bowl combine butter, cottage cheese, flour, and salt. Place in a plastic bag and refrigerate for two hours.

2. Preheat oven to 375. On a well-floured surface, roll out the dough to a 14-inch circle.

Cut circle into eight triangles.

Roll each triangle into a croissant shape, and place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.

3. Bake for 30 minutes until light brown.

4. Meanwhile, make the glaze.

Pour the milk into the confectioner’s sugar, adding ½ teaspoon at a time, until it is thin enough to pour over croissants. Drizzle over warm croissants.

Bear Mountains is a perfect picnicking and hiking destination. Sprawling fields, numerous picnic tables and trails of different levels make it a popular nature excursion. There are also secluded spots which you can discover away from the crowds. One such is past Hessian lake, taking the trail toward the Bear Mountain Bridge at Fort Montgomery Historic Site.

Perkins Memorial Drive is a breathtaking scenic drive up Bear Mountains. While there’s a trail from Bear Mountains to the observatory, which takes about 2.5 hours to hike, it is most conveniently reached by car. There are parking spots on the summit, which can be crowded on an autumn day, and also parking spots on the way - if you’d like to have a 10-or 15-minute hike to the top.

On the summit, there’s a four-story observation tower from which you are treated to a stunning 360-degree vista of the surrounding landscape, including four states (NY, NJ, CT and PA), the Big Apple skyline, the Hudson Highlands and the Hudson River some 1,000 feet below.

There are benches scattered around at the summit to take in the breathtaking views. There are also rocks from which to take in scopes of land and for shooting photos.

On a windy day, the wind will be whipping on the summit.

Lake Welch, a spectacular man-made beach, offers a half-mile of beach sand, cool breezes, picnicking, and hiking. It also offers swimming until September 7, and therefore is not a recommended destination until after that date.

There’s no official gateway entrance to Harriman State Park,and you can enter for free through the roadways that crisscross Harriman. You could think of the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center as one informal gateway. In the visitor center you can purchase trail and park maps, but it is open on weekends only. Maps can also be purchased at the Bear Mountain main desk.

Seven Lakes Drive is a gorgeous scenic ride.

It extends for just under 18 miles. Most of the highway is located in either Harriman or Bear Mountain state parks.

As its name implies, Seven Lakes Drive passes by seven lakes located at various points along the road. From south to north, the lakes are Lake Sebago and Lake Kanawauke in the towns of Haverstraw and Tuxedo; Lake Skannatati and Lake Askoti in Tuxedo; Lake Tiorati in Tuxedo and Woodbury; Silver Mine Lake in Woodbury; and Queensboro Lake in Highlands.

Sections of Seven Lakes Drive and several other roads in the park system (Tiorati Brook Road, Lake Welch Drive, and Perkins Memorial Drive), are closed for the winter from December through March.

There are areas where you can stop for picnics, or even dipping in the water.

There are boat launches with public access at the following lakes in Harriman: Askoti, Island Pond, Kanawauke (great picnic area!), Sebago, Silvermine, Skannatati, Stahahe, Tiorati, and Welch.

Lake Welch and Tiorati Beach are swimming areas until September 7. While it is only legal to swim at those two areas in Harriman State Park, there may be lone swimmers making use of swimming holes in other areas in the park.

If going to any of the lakes with which you are not familiar with, we would advise you to wait for after Labor Day, when the swimming season is over.

A permit is needed to put any type of watercraft (motorless only) into the water of Harriman State Park, as well as a $30 season pass. For the locked lakes (restricted with a gate or padlock): Tiorati, Welch, and Island Pond, a key needs to be purchased for $15.

Boat permits for Harriman State Park can be purchased at Lake Welch or Tiorati Beach: Tiorati Circle: (845) 351-2568 Beaver Pond Campground (Lake Welch): (845) 947-2792 It’s a fairly easy process that can be done on the same day as the day you plan to go out on the water, and it can be done entirely within the park.

L’asurim; A Groundbreaking Organization A question that is frequently posed to former prisoners is, was there enough food in jail? I am somewhat perplexed by this question, because while food is definitely important, it is one of the more bearable difficulties of prison life.

What a person in prison really needs most is chizuk, empathy, and support.

If that is lacking, the degrading prison treatment can affect the person in a terrible way.

Dear fellow Yidden! There are consequences for fooling around with the law! If my story inspires even one person to conduct his life and business with integrity, it will be worth the discomfort of putting my painful story in the limelight.

Light at the End of the Tunnel When my week of solitary confinement was up, I was sent to Philadelphia, where I was held for about a week.

I had no access to a phone there, so during those three weeks, I had no contact with the outside world and knew nothing about my trial proceedings.

When I did end up in court, I had only fifteen minutes to speak to my lawyer, who had already made it clear to me that things would probably remain status quo.

The courtroom was filled to capacity with Jews, including my uncle, the Kashau Rav, shlita.

My lawyer argued that all my incriminating actions were erroneously carried out by a naïve young person who had no life experience. He posited that I had served long enough and was a changed person by now.

“I want to tell you, Your Honor, what Chaim would like to do,” my lawyer addressed the judge. “He told me that upon leaving prison,

he plans to help others who are behind bars. I can tell you with certainty, Your Honor, that Chaim will never need to see the inside of a cell again.

As a matter of fact, I’ll let Chaim speak for himself.”

I uttered a silent, heartfelt prayer that the One Above should put the right words in my mouth. On the witness stand, I publicly asked for forgiveness from my Creator and from my family for all the aggravation and shame I have caused them throughout those seven years. I also thanked them for supporting me throughout. I admitted that I should have pleaded guilty from the start rather than going on trial.

I can tell you with certainty, Your Honor, that Chaim will never need to see the inside of a cell again.

With a pounding heart and a feverish mind, I said, “I want to tell you, Your Honor, that I really am a changed person.

Many people who go through the jail system have nothing but blame and anger to cast on the authorities. But while I was in the Correctional Institute, I indeed worked on correcting myself. I took various courses, such as communication skills. Most importantly, I learned how to stay firm and controlled, and not to be swayed by other people’s persuasive powers. Therefore, Your Honor, I am asking that you give me a second chance and grant me freedom so that I can, hopefully, become a productive member of society. I’ll make you proud.”

There was absolute stillness and silence in the courtroom.

Everyone held their breaths, waiting to hear the words that would determine my future.

The judge maintained that all my claims about my young age and ignorance of the law were groundless. There was, however, one argument that deserved consideration: the other defendant who’d been accused of the same crime

as I and had made a plea bargain, had received only 51 months imprisonment, while I had been sentenced to 151 months.

After a lengthy legal discourse which knotted everyone’s nerves, the judge declared, “The fact is that there is a vast difference in their sentences and, Chaim’s penalty should be adjusted proportionately to that of his accomplice’s. Therefore, I think that 100 months in prison would be a fair sentence for Chaim. Since Chaim is demonstrating good behavior and has posed no specific problems in jail, I will indeed reduce his sentence to 100 months, which means that he is due to be released in about 3 to 4 months.

And, since it is not that big a difference, I will allow him to go home for Passover!”

A shocked silence followed his words. I was frozen, rooted to the spot. I couldn’t even swallow. Slowly, my brain processed the information, and I heard the unbelievable words reverberating in my mind: Home for Passover…I

am free, I am being released… home for Passover!

Before going home, I had to take care of the release documents. Once again, I had no access to a phone. The officers told me the release process could take up to three weeks. I tried arguing that I was officially free already, so what was taking so long? Just a short while earlier, such a comment would have landed me in the Hole.

I asked the warden if I could go back to the Fort Dix facility so that I could say goodbye to my fellow Jewish inmates, but they refused.

Meanwhile, devoted askanim were working to get me home before Shabbos.

Suddenly, I was paged to the office, where they gave me $100 from my prison account and … showed me the door!

Friday night, I sat at the beautifully set table together with my brothers and sisters.

There was heimishe challah.

And there was salmon! And gefilte fish, too. The stirring zemiros … the steaming soup, with a kneidel inside! I could not get enough of it. After the seudah, my friends came over, and we sang together until four in the morning. On Shabbos morning, a festive Kiddush was held in shul; individuals whom I’d never met before came to rejoice with me.

My dear brother came to drive me to Brooklyn. He dropped me off at a store to buy clothing for Shabbos.

From there, I took a taxi home; I was told by a dayan to let the taxi take me all the way home. I arrived two minutes before shekiah. It seemed as if Shabbos had waited for me.

It took time to recover from being in a prison system for seven years. Baruch Hashem, I had lots of support and empathy from my loving family and friends. That is what helped me turn over a new leaf and rebuild my life.

My family was waiting eagerly, anxious to see that it was really true. I won’t even attempt to describe the emotional reunion with my parents and siblings from whom I’d been separated for so many years. Do you know

I have a friend who came out of jail so paranoiac, that every time someone opened the refrigerator, he ran over to see what was being taken away from him. Such imbalance comes from being cut off from society. When one doesn’t have visitors or contact with the outside world, he gets forced into an institutionalized mentality, and it is extremely difficult to readjust to normal life.

Even while I was still in jail, I used to ask my incredibly kind family to arrange visitors for the other Jewish prisoners who did not have adequate support.

Visiting inmates is a true fulfillment of pidyon shevuim,

because while chatting in the visiting room, the person can almost forget about his situation and is thereby granted temporary respite from captivity. Besides, someone who expects visitors has something to look forward to; it keeps his spirits up and encourages him to maintain a decent appearance.

Since my release, I was zoche to see my dream become a reality by helping to establish L’asurim. Our team of dedicated activists provide visitation and transportation to prisons and bring kosher food and religious articles to the inmates. They also provide moral support by operating a pen-pal system, distributing a support newsletter and by arranging for Tehillim to be said during critical times.

L’asurim is also working to provide a social worker for every Jewish arrestee.

Most importantly, L’asurim is determined to prevent crime in our community by raising awareness and educating our young people to remain on the right side of the law.

Esther is a fictional story based on real people and real events. Esther grew up in the Hungarian village, Selisht, surrounded by her loving family. Esther’s spirit, wit, and unending generosity, combined with the boundless love she received from her parents and grandparents stand her in good stead in this summer story. Although this story takes place in 1933, when life in the European shtetel was still peaceful, these same attributes helped her overcome the terrible trials she faced years later during the war.

The author, a granddaughter of Esther, is grateful every day for the deep love she was blessed to receive from her Babby Esther, and is doing all she can to continue her kindness.

Chapter 5 The Tax Inspector Recap: Esther sets out in the dark, late night with Mutche to take their bedding to Frimet’s family.

When Esther and Mutche reached the yard of Frimet’s house, Esther carefully placed the pillow and blanket down on the grass. She had to think of a way to get the bedding inside without being seen. She and Mutche slowly walked around the dark little house. They crept silently so as not to awaken the animals sleeping in the fence. As they passed the window of the big room, Esther suddenly had an idea. She motioned to Mutche to come near the house. “Mutche, I’m going to lift you up, and you will knock ever so softly on this window. Frimet sleeps right below the window. I hope she will hear us.” Mutche nodded and Esther tried lifting him up. She had never known how heavy her little brother

was! Mutche tried helping by grabbing hold of the wall and hauling himself up. Esther pushed from behind, helping him inch his way up the wall.

Finally, he reached out and banged at the window. The noise startled Esther. She dropped Mutche suddenly, and he fell to the ground with a bang. “Ouch!” he cried out.

“Sh…sh...” Esther tried soothing him even while she was shaking and shivering all over. Suddenly, they both heard the creak of the window as it slowly opened.

In the dim moonlight, Esther could make out her friend’s face. “Frimet, Frimet,” she whispered urgently. “Frimet!”

Esther was so excited and scared and relieved, that she could not talk. Frimet just stared and stared out the window, unable to make out what was going on in the dark, yet sure that she had heard her name being called.

Luckily Mutche was the one to recover first. He quickly stood up and ran to get the

pile of bedding from the grass where they had left it.

“Here, Frimet, take it,” Esther whispered as she reached up with all her might. The edge of the pillow came almost to the window.

By then Frimet was fully awake. She still couldn’t figure out what Esther and Mutche were doing in her backyard in the middle of the night, but she knew better than to ask questions. She reached down as far as she could and grabbed hold of the pillow. Then she reached out again and tried grabbing hold of the blanket. This proved to be a lot harder as the blanket was soft and kept folding over, covering Esther’s head. After many tries, Mutche took the blanket and stuffed the edge into his mouth. Holding it tight with his teeth, he began climbing up the wall again.

Esther pushed him up from below, and within a minute, Frimet was hauling the blanket through the window.

“I won’t,” was all Frimet said. And then the window closed, and the two children were in the dark yard alone again. They were elated and tired and frightened. The stress of the past quarter-hour along with the joy of success took hold of them, and they laughed until tears were rolling down their cheeks.

Her sweating hands shook as she touched feathers, warmth - a real, live chicken, sleeping right here on the side of a road under a bush.

Esther grabbed hold of the chicken and pulled it out from its hiding place. Sure enough, one wing was hanging. Mima Faige’s chicken! She had found Mima Faige’s chicken.

The frightened chicken, sensing a means of escape, quickly got between his legs and into the bedroom.

“Aaahhh!” Tatashe exclaimed, surprised. He was the first to recover. He quickly closed the bedroom door and a moment later came back to the big room holding the tired chicken firmly in his big hands. By then, Babby had lit the candles in the lamp, and the house was bathed in soft light.

Esther and Mutche stood at the door, clutching each other.

“Esther Dear,” Tatashe’s voice was firm. He sat down at the table, chicken still in hands, and called Esther to him. “Esther, I need

You have found a house.

Finally.

What happens next?

Be prepared for everything to move really fast. You will need to provide the name of your attorney, because the seller needs to prepare a contract. You need to be prepared to write a check for your down payment.

And you need to decide if you want to schedule a home inspection, something that most people choose to do.

Shabsi Goldman, home inspector, comments on the speed required. Shabsi, who is licensed in NY and NJ and does inspections in both states, says that in NY there is always this rush. The inspection report has to be completed within days. The reason is that until the seller signs contract, the seller can sell the home to someone else. There is a panic and a frenzy to get it done ASAP. In NJ, the inspection is done post-contract so you have about ten days to schedule and review the inspection report.

Remember that most homes are not new, and a seller is not delivering a perfect home. Some sellers are open to renegotiation based on the inspection report, while some are not.

The seller may be selling as is and may not be willing to do any repairs or negotiations even if the inspection finds things wrong or in need of repair. You, as the buyer, have to make a decision if you want to proceed if repairs are noted.

Upon request and if they have the proper certifications, they will check for radon, termites, lead, asbestos, mold and formaldehyde.
