Flowertown Run sets the tone for festival BY ROGER LEE The Journal Scene

E

ach year the Flowertown Festival Run attracts runners from both near and far. Started years ago by Dr. Bob Randall

and Doug McElveen, the event has grown to become a signature fundraiser for the Summerville YMCA and the kick-off event for the festival. Held during the weeks leading up to other festival events, it features a 5K run, 10K run and one-mile fun run. This year more than 900 participants registered for the event. “Since I moved back to town a few years ago, I’ve run the race every year,” Christine Wells said. “Historic Summerville is a great place to live and the perfect place for a race. Plus it supports the

YMCA, which really brings our community together.” Participants work their way through scenic and historic streets, many aligned with Summerville’s famous Azaleas. Some years more than 1,000 participate, but the event still has a much quainter feel than some of the region’s other well-know races. The course is relatively fast and the field typically very competitive. Awards are given in several age divisions. High school runners are eligi-

ble to win a team award and free laptop computer, courtesy of McElveen Buick Chevy GMC. However, the event is also perfect for those just wanting to get out and enjoy South Carolina’s moderate March weather. Registration for the Flowertown Run/Walk typically opens in early March through the Y’s website, www.summervilleymca.org.
