Message from the Mayor
s a small town, Moncks Corner’s focus on providing essential Public Safety Services and Recreation should remain a top priority. During my six years as Mayor I have made it a priority to give our police and firefighters the tools they need. We have prepared a plan for our recreational needs for the next 20 years. The purpose of this study is to plan ahead as we grow. The town’s recreational programs are regional in nature and 65 percent of our participants live out of town. Moncks Corner Town Council has placed a priority on construction of a Regional Recreation Complex in the heart of town. We have acquired over 50 acres in the heart of Moncks Corner, design is underway and construction will start in 2012. I am very proud of the accomplishments Town Council and I have made working in harmony with our merchants, area industries, other public agencies and our employees. We enjoy an excellent relationship with both the public and private sectors here. We appreciate the fact that both Roper St. Francis and Trident Moncks Corner Medical Center have facilities in Moncks Corner. SCDHEC approval and construction of a 50bed Hospital in Moncks Corner is something I will endeavor to accomplish during my next term. In closing, I want to say Thank You to the citizens of Moncks Corner for the tremendous confidence and support you have extended to my family and me. The fact that no one else offered for Mayor in 2007 or 2011 is a tremendous vote of confidence. I feel that Moncks Corner is on the verge of experiencing tremendous growth. I look forward as we work together to enhance the quality of life of our citizens during my next term. William W. Peagler III Mayor BI01-626874

Programme in Berkeley County. To shape it’s evolving identity, Mayor William Peagler and the Moncks Corner Town Council developed a list of goals for the town as it entered its 125th year since its charter in 1885. Immediate goals include bringing more business to the downtown area, continuing to develop a safety program for the town and completing a revision of the zoning ordinance, constructing a second fire station near Foxbank Plantation, building a Farmer’s Market in the new Recreation Complex, continuing to schedule replacement of fire equipment and continuing the annexation of adjacent parcels into town. Short-term and long-term goals also include improving town landscaping, developing a restaurant council, completing the recreation complex and bringing a hospital to Moncks Corner. As Moncks Corner celebrates its 125th year, its residents and town officials are hopeful for continued growth in the future. The courthouse in Moncks Corner, circa 1928.

oncks Corner began as a trading post due to its close proximity to Charleston. With the increase of technological advancements including trains and automobiles, the town evolved to form a different identity. Presently, Moncks Corner is home to several well known industries including: Santee Cooper, Berkeley Electric Cooperative, Home Telephone, Berkeley County Government, the Berkeley County School District and the Google Data Center. Berkeley Electric Cooperative is the largest electric co-op in the country. Additionally, there are over 40 restaurants and 1,200 businesses permitted to do work that are the backbone of the Town’s economy. Moncks Corner has a few nationally recognized accomplishments. Alpha-Company of the S.C. National Guard is headquartered in Moncks Corner. A few weeks after the September 11 attacks, they were the first unit from the state called up to protect the homeland. And, Berkeley High School has the first International Baccalaureate World School Diploma
The Berkeley County Museum opened in 1992 and is located in the Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner. The museum houses exhibits and interpretive displays covering 12,000 years of cultural and natural history of Berkeley County.

A past of achievement and progress
umerous game-changers throughout Moncks Corner’s history have had a long-lasting effect on the town economically. The first sign of major development in Moncks Corner started with six phones lines in 1904, which transformed into Home Telephone Company in 1939. Currently, the company serves 20,000 access lines and employs 166 professionals. The next significant technological advancements occurred in the 1940s with the completion of the Santee Cooper project and the creation of Berkeley Electric Cooperative. Both are still located in Moncks Corner. Today, Santee Cooper is South Carolina’s largest producer of electricity and water and provides power for more than 2 million South Carolinians. They have 1,840 total employees. “We are a state-owned utility and we are dedicated to providing reliable, affordable and environmentally responsible power that has been and will continue to be an asset for further economic development in the area,” said Mollie Gore, Public Relations Director for Santee Cooper. Berkeley Electric Cooperative has 243 employees and serves over 80,000 accounts, making it the largest electric cooperative in South Carolina and one of the top 25 in the nation. In 2007, Google chose Moncks Corner as the site of a new data center—a specialized facility filled with computers and run by employees who maintain the machines and the building. This data center created 200 new jobs. Moncks Corner has transformed into an energy and technology hub of the Lowcountry. With ample space for new construction and close proximity to resources, growth is in the town’s future.

Athletics: History and opportunity 8
October 26, 2011
oncks Corner’s Park and Recreation Department has long offered area youth an opportunity to hone and develop their athletic skills on the field of play. Football, basketball, soccer, baseball and softball programs have continued to grow over the years. And many local sports stars have gone on to greater heights in college, the NFL, Major League Baseball and the WNBA after getting their start on the Park and Rec fields in Moncks Corner. “We are very proud and excited during my 27 years here to have been able to provide these kids with an opportunity to develop their talents on the field and go on to play in college and beyond,” said Park and Recreation Director DeWayne Kitts. Two such stars currently making headlines in the papers and on TV are local cousins Bruce and Andre Ellington, who currently play for South Carolina and Clemson. Both rose through the ranks of MCPR and played for the Berkeley Stags. Andre graduated in 2008 and now stars for the Clemson Tigers as they battle for the ACC crown while Bruce graduated in 2010 and led the Stags to a 2009 Class AAAA Division II state championship, and now plays both football and basketball for the Gamecocks. The list of local athletes like the Ellingtons is as long as your arm. “There are so many great athletes that have come out of Moncks Corner and Berkeley County,” Kitts said. “It would be almost impossible to name them all.”
Bruce Ellington breaks away for one of his five touchdowns during a 2009 game. He led Berkeley High School to the state championship that year. He now plays basketball and football for USC. File/Dan Brown/Independent

Rich in history ...
he South Carolina National Heritage Corridor extends 240 miles across South Carolina, stretching from the mountains of Oconee County to the port city of Charleston. The Berkeley County portion of the Corridor includes 28 nationally registered historic sites. Two of these sites are located within Moncks Corner and stand as symbols of the town’s 125-year history. On East Main St., in the heart of Moncks Corner, stands the Train Depot. The Northeastern Railroad laid its tracks in 1856 and the Train Depot became the center of town. Mail and news from the outside would reach the Depot first. It also served as a platform for farmers to market their food. The present Moncks Corner Train Depot was constructed in 1914 and renovated in 2000. It now serves as the town’s Visitor and Cultural Center and the freight room is available to rent for weddings, receptions, parties, etc. The Berkeley Museum is located within the 195-acre Old Santee Canal Park on land that was once an early trading post for Native Americans. The museum features 5,600 exhibits that trace the area’s history back 12,000 years. Prehistoric artifacts dating from the ice age and pieces from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars provide an entertaining perspective of local history. For more information about Moncks Corner and its historic sites, stop by the Train Depot or call (843) 719-7900.

munity center. “The athletic programs are growing at a rapid pace and we do not have adequate space to support the growth at the current Youth Field,” said Dewayne Kitts, Director of the Recreation Department. “The new complex will help alleviate this problem with the addition of the new fields.” There are also plans for a farmer’s market, picnic areas, splash area and a playground within the complex. Mayor Peagler’s other major priority is to bring a 50-bed hospital to Moncks Corner. “We need a hospital here in Moncks Corner and if there is a hospital to be built in Berkeley County it should be built in Moncks Corner,” Peagler said. The Moncks Corner Regional Recreation Complex and a hospital would yield a lasting economic impact. The two projects would create jobs, both construction and permanent employment positions. The recreation complex would create a boost in tourism revenue since the complex will ideally be used to host tournaments for various sports Frank Johnson/Independent throughout the year. hile reflecting on Moncks Corner’s first 125 years, it is clear that the town has and will continue to grow. The next immediate step toward growth is the construction of the Moncks Corner Regional Recreation Complex, which will be located at a 50-acre site on E. Main St. behind Delta Pharmacy. The town borrowed $7.1 million to buy the land and build the first phase, and is relying on grants, future loans and donations to complete the 20-year project. The bond will be repaid from the town’s 2 percent hospitality and 1 percent local Accomodation’s tax. General Fund and Property Tax revenues will not be used to construct the complex. The first phase of construction includes four baseball fields around a concession stand and press box, a new road connecting Main St. to President Circle and a walking trail from Berkeley Middle School through the Recreation Complex to Main St. Completion of the first phase is anticipated between late 2012 and Spring 2013. Future plans include a walking/biking trail, football and soccer field, tennis courts, a recreation center with basketball courts, swimming pool, jogging track and com-
