Getting narked, lost lanes & electric ideas... Is it just me or do you also get overprotective over your favourite lanes?

I ask because it annoyed me the other day when I watched a group of 4x4 owners ‘charge’ up a green lane that’s not far from me. It happened to be a Bank holiday too, and whilst some of the crowd of wandering onlookers were watching and cheering, others weren’t so impressed. Yes I know, we all have every right to be there, and drive a lane however we want, but chatting to an ex-copper recently, he said that even on byways, driving erratically and chucking it on YouTube means that you could still be done for dangerous driving and endangering the life of others! I appreciate that we all have different driving techniques when faced with difficult challenges. Personally I like to take it as slow as I can and creep over rock steps; not only am I minimising damage to whichever vehicle I’m driving, but also to the track.

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

On the subject of favourite lanes, I was recently looking through some old photos and realised just how many locals ones we’ve lost over the years. There’s one in particular in between Bolton and Blackburn near a little place called Tockholes. It got closed when I wasn’t watching, and I suspect it was partially down to someone buying and spending a lot of money on a barn conversion next to the entrance. Obviously I could be completely wrong. It would still be fun to utilise these restricted byways, but I really don’t have the time, nor the energy, to go walk them, but .....an electric mountain bike, now that’s an idea that requires further investigation…

ViewRanger is now Outdooractive!

If you use ViewRanger to plot your ‘off-road’ routes, you will probably be aware that it’s about to be merged with OutdoorActive, and by the end of February the ViewRanger service will be discontinued, and it’s hoped users will have transferred their details over to OutdoorActive by then.

By connecting your ViewRanger accont to OutdoorActive, routes you have plotted, downloaded and recorded will continue to be available within your OutdoorActive account. Once your ViewRanger account is connected to OutdoorActive, a free subscription will be started automatically.

For a lot of folk it isn’t an easy transition, but thankfully a new Facebook group, Outdooractive, has been created to help people like me who struggle with new tech: https://www.facebook.com/groups/441533281016108

To help even further, the OutdoorActive’s marketing team is also currently working on some changes on their social media pages with the hopes of providing more regular posts to share hints & tips about using the platform, especially for 4x4 and other green lane users. more at » https://www.outdooractive.com/en/

Toyota helps keep classic Land Cruisers moving The legendary Land Cruiser 40 is the latest great Toyota to benefit from Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Heritage Parts Project. TGR announced recently that it is reproducing key discontinued components for the model, helping enthusiasts keep more of these mighty 4x4s on the road. Around the world, the Land Cruiser 40 became symbolic of “go anywhere” performance, a tough and hugely capable 4x4 with a history spanning four decades from its launch in 1960. It joins other Toyota classics in the heritage project, including the ultrarare 2000GT sports car of the 1960s, early generations of the Supra coupe and the famous AE86 Corolla. In 2022 a further 56 reproduction parts will be produced, for six different vehicles. From 1 February, these will be gradually made available for purchase through Toyota retailers worldwide, in the same way as genuine parts for current models. The project demonstrates TGR’s commitment to car culture and nurturing grassroots enthusiasm for motoring, alongside its world championshipwinning involvement in international race and rally competition and its pivotal role in helping engineer Toyota’s acclaimed GR series of sports cars.

Toyota announces rally-inspired New Hilux GR Sport

The Toyota Hilux is one of the legends of the Dakar Rally and a past outright winner of the world’s toughest race, and its success has inspired the creation of the Hilux GR Sport. Toyota has introduced dedicated suspension features to deliver an even more rewarding driving experience, with increased control, responsiveness and grip feel. A series of GR-themed exterior and interior design features reinforce the vehicle’s special quality and appeal. Powered by the Hilux’s more powerful 2.8-litre engine that delivers 201bhp and 500Nm of torque, the GR Sport has the power, but what about handling? The key feature in the upgraded suspension system is the introduction of new monotube shock absorbers and new front springs. The monotube design creates a larger piston area to give better damping performance, with faster response and better heat dissipation. It also helps maintain the performance quality of the oil inside the unit when driving in tough conditions.

straight-line performance, a flat ride and reassuring roll and rear grip feel. The new set-up also contributes significantly to ride comfort, with fast response to high-frequency vibrations and increased damping capability to control body movement and eliminate shock. It isn’t a show pony, either. A Double Cab version of the GR Sport can take a payloads of one tonne and tow braked trailers up to 3.5 tonnes. Styling wise, the GR Sport has black front grille and dedicated G-pattern mesh and gains a prominent central horizontal bar with the TOYOTA name classically rendered in a heritageinspired touch form the fourth generation Hilux of the early 1980s. The GR Sport has 17” alloy wheels with a black and machined finish and are fitted with all-terrain tyres. The black theme is carried through in the door mirror casings, side steps and tailgate handle, plus a sports bar, fitted as standard. These elements throw the bright red of the new shocks and springs into sharp contrast.

The front coil springs have been stiffened and both these and the new shocks are painted red to make a stand-out statement of the Hilux GR Sport’s special character. Compared to the standard Hilux, these upgrades deliver significant improvements in handling characteristics, including steering effort and steering angle response, 10

The look is enhanced with carbon fibre-style trim inserts, a red deco line across the width of the instrument panel and blue door panel illumination. Jeep Wrangler

80th Anniversary Model

To celebrate Jeep’s 80th anniversary they have produced a - wait for it - an 80th anniversary model. On top of the vast array of features that already come as standard on a Wrangler, the 80th anniversary model includes a few other model specific accessories. The first and most prominent is Jeep’s Sky One-Touch Power Top - basically, a full length fabric sunroof that works really well, especially at speed with barley any buffering. The leather seats and dashboard with Light Tungsten interior accent stitching add to the occasion, as do the Berber floor mats and the 80th Anniversary badge and tags. Other touches include badges and the exclusive 18” granite crystal aluminium alloy wheels that create a look that is both modern yet faithful to the iconic Jeep tradition. My Wrangler for the week was a 5-door model resplendent in Sarge green, and in my opinion at least, totally looked the part.

Over the last 12 months or so I’ve borrowed and written about the JL Wrangler a number of times, so I’m not going to repeat myself by waffling on about how, with 272bhp on tap from the 2.0 litre petrol engine, they’re ridiculously quick, or that there’s nowhere to rest your left foot. Instead, I’ll regale you with a tale of off-road prowess. Shod with 255/70R18” all-season tyres, the 80th handled all road conditions with ease, it was quiet and comfortable, just how you expect a modern 4x4 to be. Overall the 80th felt more secure and less vague that the Rubicon, which makes sense really, as it doesn’t have the Rubicon’s raised suspension and taller mud tyres. However, just because a Wrangler isn’t a Rubicon and therefore lacks mud terrain tyres, front and rear lockers and anti sway bar disconnects, does that mean it’s mall-crawler or pavement princess? Far from it, and to prove it I decided to drive a couple of interesting green lanes here in the North West.

THEMUDLIFE.CO.UK

17

Lane 1 Setting off from Bolton I headed towards Oldham for my first lane, Trailwise ref SD9807-03, aka Lark Hill. With a mild rocky climb it’s quite fun, and around a 1/2 of the way along there’s a diagonal channel that spans across the lane, nothing too challenging. Having said that, last time I was up here I was in Deux Smurf, and as I was crawled up slowly I got her cross-axles and lost traction due to a lack of momentum. Engaging low box I aimed the 80th diagonally across the channel with the intention of both lifting a wheel and making it difficult for the Wrangler. Of course I stopped half way through to take photos. Jumping back in, engaging drive and releasing the handbrake and away I drove with no fuss whatsoever, as expected, really.

18

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

Lane 2 Upon reaching the top I turned left and followed SD9907-06 which is a long, straight wide dirt lane, and suitable for a 2wd car, with care. The coil suspension and a long wheel base gives the 80th a smooth drive over rough terrain, quit joyous really. Hitting a few deep puddles a tad quicker than I should have didn’t cause it a sweat, the 80th soaked up all the imperfections like a boss.

THEMUDLIFE.CO.UK

19

Lane 3 My next lane was Harrop Edge (SE0008-04), and despite only being short in distance, it’s quite a gnarly lane with a few deep ruts and a couple of bumper grinding steps to contend with. Usually I drive down this lane, but on this occasion I figured I’d give the 80th a workout. Starting at the bottom, it’s quite narrow and rocky, then after around 15 yards or so you’re faced with a tight left hand turn and a couple of rock steps. Despite being damp and the 80th not having individual lockers, with a few extra revs it climbed the steps without hardly any wheel spin. Very impressive. Once past the next tight 90º right hand bend it becomes quite narrow again with a bit of a lean into some scratchy bushes, fortunately the traction I had from the allseason tyres was better than I expected. My next challenge were a some very deep ruts, that in fairness can be mainly avoided, but where’s the fun in that? Attacking them diagonally, with the off-side wheel first caused the 80th to lurch quite steeply, and climbing up the other side left the two opposing wheels flailing in the air and the remaining two on soft ground, that’s when I lost forward motion. I could have easily given the 80th a bit more power, but that would have caused damage to the lane, and no one wants that. In the end it was the lack of traction from the tyres that stopped me from going forward, not talent or flex from the 80th. 22

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

THEMUDLIFE.CO.UK

23

Lane 4 Next was SE0109-01, and the last time I drove upwards I was shocked by the amount of damage that had been caused over the last two years, it was almost unrecognisable. What made the short lane attractive was two large opposing holes which really tested your suspension flex and traction control. Sadly there are plenty of videos out there of 4x4s losing traction and ‘gunning it’, but instead of driving out they simply made the holes deeper. So on arrival it was no surprise that it had been graded and is now as flat as a pancake. Anyway, access to the now graded section is via a cobbled lane that has a few rain channels that cross it, handy if you want to

24

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

take the odd snap of your 4x4 posing, which is something the 80th anniversary Wrangler does very well. The following day the Wrangler was collected by Jeep, and I actually still miss it. With decent ground clearance, coil suspension and beam axles, it’s sadly becoming a rarity on UK roads. Does it drive like a car? Of course not, but the electronic stability control does a really good job of making it easy to live with on a daily basis. You buy a Wrangler because you want a Wrangler, it’s as simple as that, and you accept its misgivings, though to be fair, there aren’t many of ‘em.

Robens Cooking Combo When it comes to outside eating, nothing beats a meal that's been cooked over an open flame, it isn’t just the taste, but the satisfaction. Taking it a step further, the ability to slow cook a stew or casserole makes the wait even more special, but that entails a few more accessories, like the kit that Robens sent me, below.

Robens Firewood Stove There are plenty of different types of stoves around, but if you’re looking for a simple, yet sturdy stove that’s ready to be used within less than 20 seconds, then the Robens Firewood Stove is the one for you. Made from stainless steel and measuring 22.5 x 22.5 x 27.5 cm (LxWxH) when erected and 27 x 21 x 4.1 cm when packed away, this folding stove is not only compact, but incredibly stable. As the names suggests, the Firewood Stove uses both wood or coal, so there's no need to carry fuel, simply scout for firewood when you reach camp. To use, simply slide the stove from its heavy duty carry bag, remove both the ash plate and cooking grill from inside, and using the two handles on either side, pull apart to open it up.

On one side of the Firewood Stove there’s a hinged and lockable panel in which to add more branches or coal. Once open, feed the ash plate inside so it sits firmly at the base, adding extra robustness, flip down the hinged wood grill and place the cooking grill on top and you’re reading for cooking. The wide top can be used as a grill and is large enough to cook four burgers or a pack of half a dozen sausages. Without the grill in place it can fit a large skillet, or in this case fill it with coal simply dangle a dutch oven above it. price: £46.99 more at » www.robens.de

Robens Telescopic Tripod Made from aluminium, the Robens telescopic tripod comes in its own carry bag, weighs 980g yet can hold a pot full of delicious scram weighing up to 15kg. Packed away the tripod measure 53.5cm yet extends up to 120cm. It couldn’t be easier to use, simply extend the three legs for maximum stability, place the chain through the top hole, adjust its height then insert the locking pin into the appropriate chain link and lay it locking pin across the top of the adaptor. price: £70 more at » www.robens.de

Robens Carson 4.3ltr Dutch Oven This cast iron pot weighs in at just under half a kilogram and arrives pre-seasoned for immediate use - obviously wash it before cooking! With a raised edge on the lid it’s able to hold embers in place for heat above your delicious delicacy, and with 3 legs on the base it’s perfect for direct use on the fire. Attached to base is a handle with a hook attachment point that’s ideal for using with a tripod, as you see in the photo. The Carson 4.3ltr measures 26 x 18 cm (Dia x H), and has proven a winner at Muddy Towers for creating meals and yet easily cleaned. price: £47 more at » www.robens.de

Ford Nugget

What is it?

With the conversion carried out by well-known specialists Westfalia and available through selected Ford dealers with a full manufacturer’s warranty, the Nugget is Ford’s latest camper van, and with five-seats it can also double-up as your main means of transport.

30

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

On the road

The new Transit is quite a powerhouse, and rather quiet - so don’t forget to pack your pots, pans and cutlery properly as you’ll be frustrated with the odd rattle from poorly packed and stacked gubbins. It’s powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine with a choice of 2 power outputs; 128bhp and 18bhp with the option of an automatic gearbox. Our Nugget was the latter, and I had to be careful when accelerating from junctions in the wet as even a moderate right would leave the front tyres spinning. It’s a comfy bus; speed bumps and potholes mean nothing to it, but on undulating country roads that does translate to a bit of a bouncy and wallowy ride. Fitted with adaptive cruise control it’s a lovely motorway cruiser, and in cruise it holds its speed whilst driving downhill, which seems to be a rarity the days.Visibility isn’t the greatest due to the rear window being partially obscured by the cupboard sides and the kitchen units, but that’s to be expected. Thankfully it has huge door mirrors with front and rear parking sensors as standard and an optional rear camera.

Off road

If you like to go camping on challenging terrain, or even soggy fields, note that there's no four-wheel drive version, so it’s worth buying a set of all terrains, oh and track mats - just in case.

Interior - up front

It’s a Transit, so it has lots of practical features including plenty of places for bits and bobs. If you’re looking for comfort then the seats are lovely, but everything else up front is made from hard wearing plastic, there’s no attempt at sprucing it up a little. On the subject of seats, although it can be a bit awkward both front seats can be rotated through 180º to face the living area.

THEMUDLIFE.CO.UK

31

Interior - the important bits Heck, where do I begin? The Nugget is a bit unique in the camper van world as most others have their kitchen units along one side of the van. The Nugget on the other hand has the kitchen at the back, which allows the fitment of sliding doors on both sides of the vehicle, a huge bonus for many reasons. The kitchen has the usual mod cons; deep fridge, twin burner hob and sink.. It’s from the kitchen where you release the Nugget’s tilting roof, a necessity if you're tall and want to use the kitchen. What I liked about having the kitchen in the back is that when cooking a meal you’re away from the middle section where kids, or adults could be lounging. Speaking of the lounge area, behind the front seats, that incidentally have plenty of space in between them to walk through, there’s a three-seater bench that’s on runners with an OSOFIX attachment.

32

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

To lower the large double bed you unclip it from the roof, and access is via a ladder that clips on to the kitchen units. The Nugget has two beds, the lower one one that seats the rear passengers, and one up in the eaves. To access the latter there’s one clip at the rear that allows the rear part of the roof the lift.

Slide the bench forward, which isn’t the slickest, and folds flat into a fairly comfortable double bed.

THEMUDLIFE.CO.UK

33

Once you’ve woken from your slumber, sliding back to its seating position requires a bit of muscle. Rummage under the base, and in two parts (stem and the table) you have the ‘dining room’ table. The Nugget also comes with a shower attachment, two outdoor camp chairs and an outdoor table that’s attached to the huge rear lift up tailgate

36

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

Beneath the bench there’s a huge storage area for all manner of kit, and you’ll also find the handle for the Thule awning, a handy shelter from the rain, or sun which worked an absolute treat.

Conclusion

The Ford Nugget may not have been able to take me up mountains or along gnarly green lanes to the most secluded spots, but as one of the few fully equipped fiveseat campers it makes sense for a lot of families.

GENESIS

If you haven’t already heard of Genesis, let me introduce you. Much like Lexus is the luxury arm of Toyota, and Infiniti was to Nissan, Genesis is the premium car brand from Hyundai.

Of course, Hyundai isn’t just ‘another’ Korean car manufacturer, no, Hyundai Motor Group is a mighty force to be reckoned with, and if you didn’t know, they also own the majority share of Kia. Not only that, but their all-electric offerings have led the field for quite a while, not to mention their hydrogen tech. The whole Genesis experience is done online, or via Genesis ‘Studios’ and not through traditional dealerships. You’re allocated your own Genesis personal assistant who will take you through the process from test drive to delivery, and on to after-care, too. And if you’re struggling to understand your car after your Genesis personal assistant’s initial handover, you can book another, they’ll come to you. The question is, can brand known for its reasonably priced, well equipped and reliable cars compete with the likes of JLR, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes? On a wet and miserable December day up in North Yorkshire, I was about to find out....

GV80

On arrival at Middleton Lodge, in front of me sat the Genesis fleet that comprises of five vehicles; G70 and G80 saloons, the G70 Shooting Brake, and their SUVs; GV70 and GV80. My first pick was the company’s largest offering, the GV80. It’s imposing to say the least, almost the size of BMW’s X5 with the option of either a 2.5 litre petrol and a straight-six 3.0 diesel, both with an 8-speed auto and four-wheel-drive as standard. I was given the keys to the petrol version that churns out 300bhp, and is therefore quite sprightly. It isn’t a sports car, obviously, but it feels nippy, despite it’s size.

I didn’t take on the motorway, that would’ve been quite boring, instead I focussed my hour or so exploring the A and B roads surrounding Scotch Corner. Rather than sitting on air suspension like a lot of its rivals, the GV80 uses multi-link axles with steel coils at both ends which gives it a lovely soft ride. Don’t worry about it wallowing around corners as it comes with adaptive damping as standard which allows you to firm up body control a bit whilst in Sport mode, which is obviously my default mode. I was actually quite surprised that it handled as well as it did. Yes, for such a large car there is some body roll, but it acquitted itself well on the narrow and twisting roads not far from Croft Motoring Circuit. After my rather spirited drive, upon returning to the Lodge the GV80 had achieved 37.5mpg, which I thought was pretty amazing, considering.

46

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

With just two trim levels; Premium and Luxury, it doesn’t matter which you choose as both are very plush with plenty of soft-touch surfaces. I personally appreciated that a lot of the controls aren’t reliant on the touchscreen as some rivals do. I’m an old fashioned knobs and dials kinda guy! As for tech, well, what doesn’t it have. Genesis uses a version of Hyundai’s system which by popular opinion is already one of the best on the market. There’s a rotary controller that doubles as a touchpad for writing addresses, and the display is a 14.5” touchscreen.

GV70

Returning to Middleton Lodge, next on my list was the GV70, a shorter version of the GV80, but with a much nicer interior, in my opinion. Okay, the Saville Red may not be to everyone’s taste, but I liked it. Like the GV80, the GV70 comes with a choice of two engines: a 300bhp 2.5 litre petrol and a 207bhp 2.2 litre diesel, again, both with four-wheel drive for extra smiles. For some reason I missed taking out the diesel and spent more time than I probably should have in the 2.5 litre petrol, and within less than a mile it was already my favourite car of the day, even before I’d driven the saloons.

50

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

With a 0-60 time of just 6.1 seconds, it certainly put a smile on my face, but it isn’t all about speed, honest. Along the same twisty and muddy back roads, the 8-speed auto ‘box seamlessly shuffled its way through the gears, and huge wheels and wide tyres found traction out of the corners where they really shouldn’t have. I’m going to describe the interior as luxuriously funky, it’s the nicest and coolest I’ve seen for a long time. Of course you have all the tech you need, adaptive cruise, and so on. I did glance at the Terrain mode switch and wondered if I should explore the odd lane, but it was wet and the lanes would have been totally sodden, so I figured I’d wait till I have one on proper test. Both the GV70 and GV80 exude quality, as they should at their price points (from £39,450 and £56,715 respectively). Do I think that Genesis will make a dint in the UK luxury car market? They should do, but are Mercedes and Audi drivers brave enough to jump ship, that’s the question. And on that note I’ll finish here, yes, there’s plenty more to talk about, but I’ll wait until I have them both on a proper week long test, which hopefully should be within the next month or so.

The Tales of Lilly, The Mud Life Dog

No Puppies Please

by Karen Lee Turner

There are so many dogs in Britain, too many in fact, and rescue centres are bursting at the seams, which has been exacerbated by people surrendering dogs they got during lockdown, but can't cope with now they are heading back to working away from home. When we got Lilly she was reproductively intact, and having owned neutered pets in the past, this was a new experience. We enquired about spaying soon after, as we knew we didn't want to add to the over-population, and were told that they would only do it three months after her season.

She came into season 2 weeks after we got her, and it didn't seem to affect her or us that much, but after a rather scary event when she decided to do a Houdini-style escape, and went for a10 minute walkabout in the park, I was rather concerned that she may have had a romantic encounter, and that puppies would ensue. Damian kept telling me she wasn't gone long enough, but everytime I walked her I kept mentally noting how many dogs weren't on leads in the park, and how easy it would be for her to get knocked up. After reading about her breed having large litters, and the fact that a couple of her nipples started to look a bit fuller, my anxiety levels started rising. We had only had Lilly a month or so, and were just about coping with the upheaval she'd made in our lives, how the hell would we cope with 8-10 puppies as well] I found out information on the length of her breed's pregnancy, noted the date of her escape and kept a look out for nesting behaviours and tell-tale signs of pregnancy. Apart from those two nipples nothing else was materialising in the timeline that the websites were stating, so I started to relax a bit, but never really did until a week after she would have given birth. Phew, no puppies!

56

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

As soon as we knew she wasn't pregnant we booked the date for the spay with our vets, but during the wait I started to do some research, and we decided that with her being a very active breed (she is part Whippet), that we'd prefer a laparoscopic spay. Instead of a large wound that would take 6-8 weeks to properly heal, and weeks where she wouldn't be allowed to run around, the laparoscopic version would mean a few small incisions (3 in fact), that she'd be up and about almost immediately, and allowed to get out'n'about in around a week. She was booked in for the 3rd of December, and on the morning we both took her in, left her with the vets, and went home to nervously wait. Well, there is nothing normal about the humans in the Turner household, and I think we've rubbed off on her, because only half an hour later we were called to pick up our little darling. Why? Remember those swollen nipples that I mentioned earlier, well they weren't her just being a little chubby (as I'd thought after no puppies materialised), no she was in the midst of a phantom pregnancy, and they couldn't do the spay until she'd stop producing milk! After a couple of checkups, and a 40 quid bill for drugs later, the milk dried up, and she was rebooked in for the 15th. This time all went well. She went in at 8.50am, and they called us early to pick her up, as she recovered from the anaesthetic remarkably quickly, and she was raring to go. We didn't think she'd do so well with the 'cone of shame' as she has terrible spacial awareness at the best of times, so we opted for a Buster - basically a doggy babygro, to stop her licking at her stitches. It did the trick, but when we got the itemised bill the Buster was a whopping £23, and honestly it really wasn't a lot more than a baby's popper vest with a hole for her tail. If you are handy with a sewing machine you could easily have a go at adapting a baby's vest, but if not, I have looked about for alternatives, and have found PDSA do a similar thing called a Recova Shirt, which at £12.99 is almost half the price, so if your dog is going to be having an operation in the near future you may want to make, or buy your own beforehand.

GET SOCIAL WITH Lilly on Instagram

She was eager to go out from the day of the op, but she had to put up with short 5 minute toilet trips for 3 days until she had a post-op checkup. The vet was really happy with her progress, so she got allowed 10-15 minute wanders, and at her final checkup just a week later she was allowed to ditch the babygro, and resume normal exertions. The laparoscopic version cost us around £300 more than it would if we'd gone for a standard spay, but to us it was worth it to see Lilly's super quick recovery, and it helped alleviated our guilt at inflicting an operation on our gorgeous little lady.

Dry Dogs Sighthound Escape Proof Harness 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

When we got Lilly she came with a collar and lead, but we soon discovered she is eager to get places on her walks, and she likes to pull. Sometimes she would pull too much, and ended up coughing because she's throttling herself. We looked into a variety of collars and harnesses, and decided a harness with a front and top ring, which is good for controlling pulling, would be the way to go. As Lilly is part Whippet she has a chunky neck but a narrow head, and had managed to slip her collar over her head when doing twirlies, and with sighthounds having a deep rib cage in comparison to neck and head size, their ability to wriggle out of a standard harness is legendary on the forums, so I wanted a harness with an extra clip section that fastens round the smaller waist section to stop this. I found that some that were ridiculously expensive, and not knowing if she'd even cope with a harness I didn't want to remortgage my house to afford one. After days of internet surfing, I happened across someone who mentioned Dry Dogs in a forum, so I investigated, liked the reviews, and got out the credit card. On first try Lilly was a bit perplexed, and unsure whether she was allowed to move with this strange contraption on, but by the third walk she was loving it. It's really easy to put on - just slip her head through the neck opening, and fasten 3 clips - 2 on either side of the ribcage, and one at the waist and off you go, and as abonus it also has a handle on the back which is great for keeping extra control or for assisting them getting into vehicles. available in 4 sizes & 4 colours price: £30 more at » drydogs.co.uk 58

Disinfectants, Deodorisers & Sanitisers

Aqueos Canine Disinfectant & Deodoriser

Not being a chemist I can only tell you what the company says about the disinfecting qualities of this product, so let's get that out of the way: - The disinfectant kills 99.999% of viruses, bacteria and fungi, and complies with the BS EN14476:2013 + A2:2019 standard, and is effective against all enveloped viruses - It has less than 1% active ingredient and is non-irritant and non-corrosive - It is alcohol free so is less evaporation making the disinfectant more effective. - The disinfectant kills germs and then carries on working after application so gives extra protection between treatments. - Safe to use for whelping. - Dogs & puppies can walk on sprayed areas immediately after application. Now for the bit I can tell you about ... Some deodorisers seem to work by masking nasty niffs by making your house smell like a pot pourri factory, but this one from Aqueos has a very subtle, non-flowery smell that I really liked. The subtle smell is also advantageous because you can actually use it directly on your dog too, though you need to avoid the face and any sensitive areas. This is especially useful for dogs who like to roll in something nasty, or you can use it to disinfect after contact with other dogs or people if you are wary of germs. I didn't try this on Lilly because she's pretty easy to wash. but if I had a more furry hound, then I might have had a go. All you do is turn the nozzle and spray, and then either wipe with cloth or leave it to dry naturally, and repeat when necessary. The nozzle is where my only gripe is, as the spray that came out wasn't very consistent; instead of the usually fine mist, it seemed to release a bit of mist, bigger droplets and dribbles, so the coverage was a bit hit and miss, though I will concede this could just have been this one bottle, and it wouldn't put me off buying it again.

Made in the UK, this disinfectant is also available in a handy 200ml size spray, a 1L with hosepipe attachment for disinfecting patios or outside kennel areas, and 2 versions of 5L bottle - one already diluted & one that is concentrated, and makes up to 200L. prices: from £8.50 to £58 (the 750ml version as tested is £10.28) more at » www.aqueos.co.uk/disinfectant-for-dogs

Disinfectants, Deodorisers & Sanitisers

Sicura Pet Bed Deodoriser & Sanitiser

Firstly the company blurb... Formulated to comply with EN1276 and EN14476 testing standard this powerful disinfectant formulation is designed to eliminate 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, whilst neutralising unpleasant odours.

This Sicura deodoriser is designed for use on whiffy pet beds, and would be really useful for those beds that don't have removable covers. Just spray a fine mist covering and leave to dry completely before letting your pet back onto the bed. Sounds good so far, but you know that doggie odour that you can't smell anymore, but everyone who comes to your house can, well this Sicura deodoriser will definitely banish it from the room, unfortunately though it will replace it with a rather strong scent that reminded me of newly washed clothes crossed with toilet cleaner.

60

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

It wasn't unpleasant, just really quite strong, and I'm not a fan of strong fragrances as they can give me a headache, plus I don't think everything needs to smell of Jasmine, Lemongrass or some other fragrance you've never come across in real life. This spray wouldn't be the one I'd pick, but I also realise that I am not 'the norm' when it comes to house freshening odour products. Judging by the huge industry that sells everything from carpet fresheners to electric fragrance diffusers a lot of people do like strong smells, so if you really like things to have a fragrance then go for it. size - 500ml price: £12 available to buy at fureveryoccasion.co.uk

r e s i u r C d n a L Toyota y t i l i t U r o o D 3

What is it? If you need a proper commercial 4x4 and don’t fancy a pickup, then there isn’t much of a choice on the UK market, even more so now Mitsubishi have left the UK. In fact, you’re left with either a Defender or Toyota’s formidable Land Cruiser, and at just £30k (after you’ve reclaimed the VAT), the latter is by far better value. The Land Cruiser commercial range consists of two variants, the Utility and Active, and both are available in short and long wheelbases, the former is only available with a 6-speed manual gearbox whilst the latter is only available with an automatic.

On the Road With 201bhp being produced from the new 2.8-litre engine that was introduced to the range back in autumn 2020, the Land Cruiser Commercial is quite a sprightly 4x4, to say the least. Although not that important in a commercial vehicle, but it will now accelerate from rest to 62mph in 11.2 seconds, and reach a heady top speed of 108mph.

Arguably more important is that from between 1,400 to 3,400rpm it produces a maximum of 420Nm. (500Nm from the automatic). Out on the road the 6-speed manual gearbox was an utter delight, slotting into each ratio with the minimal of fuss, and whilst using a good chunk of the 201bhp, I particularly enjoyed the diesel roar. I know, I’ll never grow up. The traditionally sprung commercial does tend to wallow around corners, but that’s fine as it never feels cumbersome, and if you brake suddenly the bonnet plunges downwards and springs back up like Zebedee. Being on the soft side, the Utility soaks up potholes and other undulations with ease, so whether you’re on a badly maintained road or a green lane, the Land Cruiser takes it all in its stride. Fuel wise, after a week of varied trips and assorted speeds, the Utility averaged 29mpg, which I thought was pretty good. Apparently, 33mpg is achievable if you take your time.

66

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

Off road There are no fancy 4x4 modes or crawl features on the commercial, there’s a H4 and L4 dial and a Centre Torsen Limited Slip Differential (LSD) switch, and that’s your lot. Ground clearance for the 3-door is 205mm whilst the approach angle is 31°, and if you do find yourself bottoming out, have no fear because both the front and rear bumpers and the ladder frame cross-member have been designed to slide easily over any obstacles. Selecting low-box on one particular gnarly green lane and the Utility flexed its way over stones the size of footballs and easily climbed a 3 foot tall rock step. It only let me down when both opposing wheels were off the ground and the other two were against vertical steps. A rear locker would have been beneficial here, as would beefier tyres. I’m not criticising it, for a standard 4x4 on 245/70 R17 road tyres it got me further than I ever expected it to. Unlike the Defender that I mentioned at the beginning, the 150 Land Cruiser benefits from a huge amount of companies that offer good quality aftermarket off-road accessories that will make your Land Cruiser even more capable, whether that’s general green laning or touring.

Interior Obviously not as plush as the Invincible model, but the Utility is designed for a purpose. With very comfortable cloth seats, you can wile away the hours on interminably long journeys in the Utility, and feel as fresh as a daisy when you reach your destination, but it still has a few niggles. Like the Hilux, the steering wheel doesn’t adjust high enough, and therefore getting in and out, if you have legs, is a nuisance as your thighs catch the base of the wheel. Then the knob for the volume control is tiny and smooth, impossible to use if you’re wearing gloves. That said, there are controls on the steering wheel. I always feel it should have chunky switches as you get on the RAV4. The panel on the door that houses the electric window switches is made from hard plastic that protrudes out and can be painful if you ‘mansplay’. Other than that, it’s a comfortable place to be. Standard features include air conditioning, cruise control and six-speaker audio system with DAB, CD player, Bluetooth and (on the LWB model) Aux-in and one USB connection. Dusk-sensing headlights, smart entry, front fog lights and roof rails are also included in the specification. Behind the seats the Utility is fitted with a full-height metal bulkhead with a strong mesh top section fitted with a hatch for easy access, and the load space is fitted with an edge-to-edge, non-slip flat floor tray. The 3-door has 1,574 litres of space whilst the 5-door has 2,216 litres. Respective payloads are up to 593 and 756kg for the 5-door, and both vehicles can tow braked trailers with loads of up to three tonnes.

70

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

Conclusion I thoroughly enjoyed driving the 3-door Utility, it felt solid, dependable and the 6-speed manual gearbox is a delight. Granted, there are more glamorous 4x4s on the market, but Land Cruiser Utility is a truly rugged, versatile 4x4 that is straightforward and honest that gives you the feeling that no matter how you treat it, it won’t let you down.

Read about green laning as seen through Lauren ‘Sunshine’ Eaton's windscreen at The Green Lane Association, and find out what’s hot, or not, in the laning world each month. Enjoy!

Starting the year off as we mean to go on! It has been a busy start to the year for the laning world. GLASS have welcomed a huge number of new members, we’re chin deep in legal action, and are busy addressing physical works on the lanes. Here is a rundown of the top 10 news in brief stories from the first month of the year

1. Spring Lane, Leicestershire I wrote about this only last month. For those of you who have not come across the case - Spring Lane has been largely neglected over recent years and this had caused one badly draining section to fall into disrepair. At the other end of the byway the section that leads to residences had deteriorated to the point that essential services could not access the properties. Everyone wanted the lane closed, but we all know that closure is not management! It took from October 2020 to the end of 2021, and GLASS serving legal notice on the council, to ensure the lane would remain open, and to get to the stage where the work could begin. By now, the plan was to have the lane brought up to the standard required by law to allow all users to pass without hindrance, but unfortunately, we have hit another delay. Work was due to start one dry January Monday morning and on Friday the contractor and I were all ready to go after the weekend, but at 3.30pm on Friday afternoon I was called by the council and told to hold off. Do not worry, the work will get done, but for now, we are back to playing email and phone ping-pong with the highways and rights of way departments. This is of course no fun at all but is also not out of the ordinary when dealing with the civil service!

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

2. Dead Man’s Hill, Upper Nidderdale Thanks to a combined TRF / GLASS work party consisting of twenty volunteers, maintenance and repair work was carried on both Dead Man’s Hill, UUR U936, and In Moor Lane, BOAT 15.126/15/1 The volunteers replaced a wooden gate and repaired three others. Many drainage grips were cleared of silt and rubble, this is essential to preventing water erosion on the surface of the lane. Water erosion and drainage management is the most frequent issue we address, the power of falling and flowing water should never be underestimated! It is amazing how much damage can be done over time. Waterlogged potholes were drained where possible by reinstating drainage channels. Thanks to all who attended and helped out with the project!

A grand day out in Cumbria (and Northumberland) by Peter Apps (Cumbria Rep Team) On Sunday 2nd January we managed four separate laning trips, each with four or five vehicles, and in different parts of Cumbria - albeit that my eastern route covered quite a bit of Northumberland too! Gary Miller lead a group of five vehicles in South Lakes on a trip that included several of the better known popular routes. A good crew that included old and modern together. David Andrew stepped up to lead a group of four starting near Penrith, aided most ably by navigator James. They headed west over Coach Road, and still further west to include lanes toward Loweswater, then turning north and heading toward Bassenthwaite, before looping around north of the Skiddaw range to end up back near Penrith. Patrick Lacey also lead a group of four again starting near Penrith, but this time heading east along the A66 before turning up country to encompass routes further north including Hartside (downhill of course, as per voluntary agreement) and then up further north as far as Wreay; to the Ford at Petterill Bank, and then back down toward Penrith again. I lead a group of four that was originally going to start at Hartside and head east, but as half of the group live further north, we missed out an early lane and started at Alston. Heading northeast up into Northumberland getting as far up as Heydon Bridge area before again heading south and west, via Allendale, to end up back in Alston. Still with some light left in the day, we trundled down Hartside to do a few cheeky lanes around Gamblesby before darkness fell. Four great teams who all pulled together when needed. Neil and Graham Fowler helped Tony change his fan belt on the Series in pouring rain, Tom helped with a bit of tree maintenance and likewise Andrew did similar on a lane up north. Pleased that the west, north and east routes worked out OK, but more so that there were four teams out enjoying legal laning in the lakes and beyond, taking time to do maintenance and have a good craic. Fantastic team spirit with a group - or groups of people I would take with me almost anywhere. Cheers people!

Flintshire local , Bruce, showing the depth of the rut

4. A foray in Flintshire Griff James-Evans (Flintshire's rep) and I visited local residents in the county to take a look at a byway open to all traffic (BOAT), after reports of off-piste activity and a few confrontations. As always there are always several sides to a story and while the lane is undeniably in need of some tlc, the confrontations were often completely unnecessary, and more a matter of believing us all to be like the minority who misuse the byway. Because the land the lane runs through is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and also under protection orders, this case needs careful handling. The BOAT is open and legal for all users, but the surrounding land is both sensitive and precious. Sadly, due to a minority users not respecting the countryside there is now a lot of anti-vehicle rhetoric and pressure to close the route. This as we know will not stop any law breakers and will only serve to prohibit legal use, so Griff and myself will be in contact with the relevant authorities to negotiate a plan of action. In the meantime, please avoid SJ1574-03 just outside of Brynford, the legal line is difficult to decipher due to the state of the terrain at the moment and further use will only compound any current problems we are trying to remedy to keep the lane open for all.

Wrexham, Whitestones, and width issues There is a fair bit of news from my home county this month. Whitestones is always the biggie! As many of you will know the devastation inflicted upon the route by 'persons unknown' has reached fever pitch. Even walking it to complete a survey for court was like doing the Krypton Factor assault course! It is simply inaccessible to pretty much anyone except the most intrepid motorcyclists and walkers, horses and 4x4s do not stand a chance. We should have news in the near future though, all the legal paperwork has been completed and submitted (she says with a sigh of relief!). Legal action is no fun at all, there is a huge amount of work to do that never gets seen by the laners who ultimately benefit from it, but it is all worth it if it means we can address some of the most pressing issues our community finds itself up against. There are two lanes that have recently come to my attention as suitable for motorcycles only. Whilst wherever possible GLASS will fight to ensure rights for as many users as possible, sometimes the terrain simply does not allow for those of us who drive 4x4s to use them. It is what it is. Signage will be installed on SJ2640-11 and SJ2237-03 to save 4x4 drivers the hassle of driving so far before having to turn around. This isn’t a change, things have always been this way, it’s just a matter of making it clear to users when they attempt to use an unsuitable route and end up reversing. In the case of SJ2237-03 it was believed that the landowner has illegally obstructed the lane with a locked gate. He hadn’t, George is a lovely chap who is a laner himself, it was just a case of poor signage from Wrexham Council! He is more than happy for motorcycles to use the (very narrow) legal route, which does not include his private drive (which is what is behind the locked gate). Celyn helped by showing us the correct route!

6. Laning in the media

7.

BBC Radio Humberside contacted me to speak about a lane just outside Bainton. Anti-4x4 ramblings have been raging on for some time in the area and maintenance work had been promised by the council for some time, yet has been delayed over and over again.

Volunteers, all members of the Green Lane Association, spent a day clearing the overgrown section of Chilly Hill Lane at Chew Magna which was very tight and scratchy.

It is the usual story of users being blamed for local authorities failing to do their legal duty to maintain public roads, even when they promise to do so! Thankfully in this case the broadcast was live, 7am may not be the ideal time of day to go head-to-head with angry antis, but in this case, I was given all the time I needed to answer questions fully and uninterrupted. So, thanks BBC for giving our community that valuable opportunity – that is not something I can say often!

Chew Magna lane clearance

The efforts of our volunteers were much appreciated by all users, several walkers stopped to show their appreciation. As can be seen in the photographs, the lane is now accessible to everyone, and the farmer was helpful in assisting the work. Projects like this are great for improving relationships between landowners and user groups. Well done all!

8. We need you! We have several vacancies for reps in the following counties:

-

Bedfordshire Cambridgeshire Cheshire Herefordshire Warwickshire West Midlands Pembrokeshire Wrexham

If you have some spare time and would like to help out in your area, please contact the local Regional Coordinator, all contact details can be found here - https://glass-uk.org/other-info/contact-us.html

9.

The Volunteer Lengthsman Scheme is booming! If you don’t have time or inclination to take on a rep role, why not become a lengthsman? We relaunched the scheme at the end of last year, and have seen a massive influx of people who have adopted their favourite lane(s). The role is a simple one, drive the lane at least 4 times a year during each season, report any significant issues, or rectify any minor ones while you’re there. Sign up is easy - go to https://membermojo.co.uk/glass-uk/yourmembership/details and tick the VLS box under your details. You’ll then be asked to input the TWUID of the lane you wish to adopt, if you want to adopt more than one separate each number with a colon ( : ). While you wait for your VLS sticker to arrive in the post, introduce yourself to the local rep and make a note on Trailwise2 to let other members know that you are active in the area.

Help us to preserve public access rights! We've only got 29 days to raise £15k! When legislation is misused to reduce public access to the ordinary road network we need to act, fast! Imagine having regularly used the minor road network in your town or village only to have that right extinguished by legislation that was not intended to be used for that purpose. This is exactly the situation residents in St Mawgan have found themselves in when Rectory Lane was reclassified as a restricted byway. The legislation used to downgrade the lane to the lowest class of public road with no motorised rights was never intended to bite on ordinary roads, but now it has it must be challenged. This local case, supported by local residents and the Parish Council, will have national repercussions for public access, and is soon to be fought in the High Court by GLASS and the TRF. If we are successful, Cornwall Council will have to reconsider their decision, and we hope that vehicular use by the public will be confirmed. If this happens the law will be clarified to make it less likely that the public will lose access to their roads nationwide in future. We need you to be a part of this important case, help us to give you a voice when our rights are at risk! https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-our-village-road/ Thanks to everyone who has helped to start 2022 off on a positive note! That’s all from me this month folks! Stay safe and happy laning! Lauren & Celyn (who seems to be enjoying her best spa life with her own personal mud bath)

IN OUR GARAGE

Taking Charge I’m fortunate enough to have press cars arriving on a pretty regular basis, but this means that Deux Smurf, our 1996 Toyota Surf, hardly gets used, and in the near freezing temperatures we’ve had recently, that inevitably means her battery dies. Thankfully I have two pieces of equipment that solve this problem. The first is Britpart's XS Power Pack which I reviewed last year in our February 2021 issue. Weighing in at only 615g, and measuring only 230 x 87 x 27mm, the XS Power Pack is an excellent piece of kit. Removing the power pack and jump leads from their sturdy case, I attached them both and watched as the small LED lights flashed giving me the go ahead to connect them to the battery. I then jump in Deux Smurf, turn the key and without any hesitation she fires up. What amazes me is that when fully charged the XS Power Pack has the ability to jump start Deux Smurf up to 40 times. Yes really, 40 times, and it’s only the size of a big bar of chocolate, and it can also charge up your mobile and pretty much every other gadget with a battery too - AMAZING!!

82

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

IN OUR GARAGE As I live in a mid terrace, after starting her with the XS, I decided to drive around to the back, park her up and use the second essential piece of equipment, my CTEK MSX 7.0. The MXS 7.0 is perfect for charging larger batteries. It’s a fully automatic 8 step charger that has a special reconditioning mode for restoring and reconditioning stratified and deeply discharged batteries. It also includes other witchcraftery like a battery diagnosis to establish whether your battery can receive and retain a charge, or if it is totally knackered. It also has a winter program for charging in cold weather. With the Deux Surf on charge for around 6 hours, her battery was fully charged and refurbished, which was just as well as, over the next week or so there was more freezing temperatures to come. Each time I turned the key, she's fired up without any hesitation. Both the Britpart XS Power Pack and CTEK MSX 7.0 have been worth their weight in gold over winter, and I have no doubt they’ll continue to do so. They may be on the expensive side, but by ‘eck they’re worth it.

Out on The Range Last month Ford kindly lent me a Ranger Wildtrak to attend an event they’d organised down in the Brecon Beacons, and part of the day was spent exploring some of the local green lanes. After breakfast and a safety briefing by Adam Hearne of 4x4 Wales, myself and other motoring writers gathered in the carpark and awaited our instructions. The rain hadn’t stopped from the night before, so it was a bit damp, and I wondered what condition the lanes would be in. After being separated into two smaller groups, we set off in our Rangers 20 minutes apart. Remembering that not all the motoring writers invited to the day have green laning experience, the lanes chosen were therefore relatively easy, and a few miles down the road from our hotel was the start of our first lane, and for some reason, Bob from All Terrain Services who was leading our group, asked me to be tail-end Charlie.

Lane 1 Trailwise ref SN8441-02 took us first on a wide forestry track, then a narrow single track that weaved its way through the Crychan Forest, and at times under fallen trees. Annoyingly there were signs of offpiste activity, but that seems to be the norm these days. From the drivers seat, negotiating the deep puddles and rock steps always seemed easier than they first appeared, and in front of me was the answer. Driven by Theo from the Black Panthaa Youtube channel, it was almost poetic watching just how the suspension on his Ranger worked as it flexed its way over and through every obstacle. Comfortable and capable pickups these Rangers are. With the exception of the east side of the lane that was a bit axle twisty, I’d say that SN8441-02 is easily managed in a Dacia Duster with decent tyres. With all the trees and shrubbery that loom over the lane, I’d also consider investing in a decent saw.

Lane 2

Heading down to Llandovery our next lane was SN7732-02, and there isn’t much to talk about apart from the odd deep puddle, but it lead us directly to our final lane - SN8131-02 and SN8230-01, or Roman Road as it’s also known as.

Lane 3 Driving from west to east it begins with a short axle-twisters that was deep enough for even a Raptor with its trick suspension to lift a wheel. When it was my turn in the Wildtrak I engage the rear locker for the first time to counter any wheel spin. I could’ve probably managed without it but it was muddy and I didn’t want to cause any damage to the track. Our next challenge was a rocky incline with a few deep ruts added for good measure. With Bob at the top directing the novices, when it was my turn I engaged the rear locker again and aimed at keeping the wheels on top of the ruts as much as possible minimising the chance of becoming cross-axled. I needn’t of worried, the Wildtrak found traction pretty much everywhere. If you’re in a smaller 4x4 then you’ll need to be extra watchful with your wheel placement whilst carefully picking your line.

By this time the rain had passed, the clouds dispersed, and the stunning views appeared across to the Usk Reservoir and Pen Y Fan.

Nearing the highest point before it changes to SN823001 there’s a water section, though not necessarily deep, or long, it does have quite an uneven and rocky base that would give you quite a surprise if you decided to ‘go for it’!

From there on Roman Road lives up to its moniker, and is a fairly straight and easy single lane track with even more epic views.

From there on we headed in convoy to the next part of the day that would see me tackling a sodden off-road course and taking a Raptor around a motocross circuit.

Present 4x4(s) 2015 Range Rover Vogue SE. 3.0 TDV6. Modifications done I’m new to green laning, so not much. All I’ve done is stuck some Falken Wildpeak A/T tyres on it and fitted a CB radio. Favourite Modifications Obviously a decent set of tyres go a long way, but I think the

Radio is my favourite. My wife and I go out in an organised group, so the radio is essential for keeping in touch with the others. Modifications to do Lots! But next on the list are Rock Sliders and a nice hidden winch. Favourite green-laning trip My last one, which was 2 days in the Yorkshire Dales. However, we’re heading over to Mid-Wales at the end of January and I’m very much looking forward to that one. The guide, Bob from Compass Overland, informs me Mid-Wales is a lot more challenging than England, so it’ll be great to push it a little bit more. Lottery win 4x4 I have to say a brand New Range Rover. I love green-laning in mine, so why not a brand new one with that “new car smell”. Favourite car related film Is Jurassic Park a car related film?! They do go off-roading in the Jeep Wranglers and green laning in the Ford Explorers. Jurassic Park it is. Favourite biscuits I don’t eat biscuits. We don’t buy them, am I odd? Where can we find more details? Because I’ve recently started green laning in my 2016 Range Rover L405 I’ve set up some social media pages to document my travels for my own personal enjoyment, and because not many people green lane in the L405. Let There Be Light Because I haven’t had any press cars at my disposal recently, I’ve spent the last three weeks of December driving Deux Smurf, and I was rudely reminded of how dim her headlights are. In fact, at one point I pulled over to check whether they were actually working. If you remember, a few months ago in our new product section we featured the Night Breaker 200 bulbs from OSRAM. They sounded ideal, so after chatting to OSRAM they kindly supplied me with a pair to evaluate. Like any older car, fitting the Night Breakers wasn’t a problem, simply open the bonnet, undo the odd clip and swap the bulbs over - a 2 minute job if that. Compare that to something I read on Twitter the other week when someone’s daughter took their small EV Volkswagen to the 'stealership' and got stung for £300+VAT to change one singular bulb. Progress? ....I don’t think so.

96

THE MUD LIFE MAGAZINE

IN OUR GARAGE I don’t want to teach Grandma to suck eggs or anything, but if you’re changing bulbs, don’t forget to use nitrile gloves to minimise skin contact with the main glass. Why, you ask? I was always told that the reason why some bulbs fail prematurely is that grease transfers from your skin and creates a hot spot on the bulb when in operation, and the bulbs heat up causing them to die. Unfortunately I didn’t take a before photo, but just imagine what a pair of candles would look like compared to the image below, to say that they’ve improved visibility is an understatement. Being halogen, the light isn't as pure white as a pair of LEDs, but they’ve made one heck of a difference, not only are they brighter, but they also produce a more even spread of light. With up to 200% more brightness and up to 20% whiter light, OSRAM claim that their Night Breaker 200 bulbs are their brightest halogen automotive light yet, and so far can’t disagree. They’ve made such a huge difference, that I’m just sat here wondering why I didn’t change her bulbs sooner? Next time I won't procrastinate so much! Osram Night Breaker 200 available at Amazon.co.uk
