HE ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) sank deeper into trouble yesterday, with National Chairman Bamanga Tukur appointing Deputy National Secretary Onwe S. Onwe as the Acting National Secretary, pending the determination of Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola’s fate. The removal of Oyinlola as National Secretary was greeted with drama as Tukur was accused of using an amended Constitution, which has not been ratified by the National Convention of the PDP, to get the former Osun State governor out. But to avoid a contempt of court, Oyinlola stayed away from the National Secretariat of the party and a session of the National Working Committee (NWC). Oyinlola, through his counsel, launched a legal battle at the Court of Appeal to retrieve his seat. He was sacked last week by the Federal High Court. There were, however, strong indications that a fresh South-West Zonal Congress might be conducted within 21 days by the party for the election of Oyinlola’s successor. In a terse statement he personally signed, Tukur said he wielded the powers, in line with Chapter V Section 35 (1), 35 (1)(b) as well as Section 36(2) of the party’s constitution as amended. The statement said: “Pursuant to the powers conferred on the National Chairman by Chapter V Section 35 (1), 35 (1)(b) as well as Section 36(2) of the constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party (as amended), the Deputy National Secretary of the PDP, Barr. Solomon Onwe, is hereby directed to assume duties as the Acting National Secretary of the PDP. “Barr. Onwe shall by this directive conduct Continued on page 2

HE President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday said the insecurity and other problems facing the North are self-inflicted. The Sultan said the region should blame itself for its sundry problems. Sultan Abubakar spoke in Kaduna at a Peace and Reconciliation Committee meeting set up by the Northern States’ Governors’ Forum. The Sultan, who is the head of Nigerian Muslims, noted that the North has failed to address its problems. He, however, said dialogue with aggrieved parties, rather than violence and use of force, is the solution to the insecurity in the country. According to him, the problems facing the North will remain the problem of Nigeria because the region cannot be left alone. Sultan Abubakar said traditional rulers tried to resolve the region’s problems, adding that they would not give up until the challenges are overcome. The Sultan decried the inability of the government and its agencies to implement various recommendations that would have solved Nigeria’s challenges . He said: “Let us sit and talk Continued on page 63
