F he decides to run in 2015, President Goodluck Jonathan may insist that he signed no agreement to have just one term, a source said yesterday. His argument will be that if there was any agreement with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, it has no legal effect, “although it is a moral challenge”. The Presidency is yet to react to the one-term row in order not to overheat the party, it was learnt yesterday. But a highly-placed source insist-

ed that an agreement was signed with the PDP governors and some leaders of the party. The source, who was part of the pact, claimed that most PDP governors have not spoken because they are afraid of “possible backlash” from the Presidency. According to sources, the President’s strategists have been meeting since Saturday on the implications of the revelation of the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum (NGF), Governor Babangida Aliyu, that
there was an agreement that Jonathan would serve one-term in office. The strategists comprise some ministers, the Chief of Staff to the President, some senators, advisers and a few members of the House of Representatives. It was gathered that the strategists had weighed the facts available to them and Aliyu’s comment. The think-tank members were said to have concluded that “Governor Babangida Aliyu’s comment cannot affect President Jonathan’s second
term aspiration. A top source in the Presidency, who spoke in confidence, said: “None of the governors has produced a copy of the said agreement. Only one of them spoke about it. There is a difference between mutual understanding and an agreement. “The truth is that even if any agreement was entered into by the President in 2011, it has no legal implication or force at all. It has only a moral force which political circumstance can change. Continued on page 6
