HE House of Representatives will not shift its position on Budget 2013, its spokesman Zakari Mohammed said yesterday. President Goodluck Jonathan is holding back his assent to the bill as passed by the National Assembly on the grounds of disagreement over the way the lawmakers tampered with what he forwarded to them. But the lawmakers yesterday promised to take a definitive action, in whatever form would be, next week, should the President continue to withhold his assent. OVERNORS have failed to elect a new leader for their parent body - the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF). All was tense Wednesday night at a session to elect the chairman in Abuja. The outgoing chairman of the NGF, Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, is seeking a second term but some forces outside the Forum are desperate to stop him. They said the constitution of the

NGF does not allow a chairman to run a second term in office. The tension forced a postponement of the election of a new chairman indefinitely. The Nation learnt that when the election came up, some governors said Amaechi could not seek re-election, based on the constitution of the Forum. It is believed that some forces in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are

unhappy that the leadership of the Forum has raised Amaechi’s image. The anti-Amaechi forces also complain that the Forum has become a strong platform to checkmate the excesses of a sitting President. It was gathered that as part of steps to weaken the Forum, a plot was hatched by the said forces to unseat Amaechi. The initial plot was to raise question on Amaechi’s tenure, which expired in April last year, but most of

the governors did not embrace that. The “powerful” forces later opted to infiltrate the governors to “deal” with Amaechi, but members of the Forum, especially those in the opposition, resisted attempts to impose a chairman on them. When the anti-Amaechi forces could not have their way, the battle shifted to the constitutional issue. But pro-Amaechi governors also drew the attention of members to the Continued on page 6
