Outstanding walking and trekking holidays

Big Hearts & Landscapes in Jordan Travel Consultant Samantha Manning lost a piece of her heart to Jordan – with a highly educated, cultured and tolerant people, the world-class site of Petra and some of the world’s most stunning desert scenery, we’re delighted to be offering two new tours to the country in 2020.
J
ordan is the first Middle Eastern country that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. I left with an overwhelming appreciation and love for the country’s people, culture, history and landscapes, so we’re delighted to be launching two brand new itineraries there in 2020 – one following the famous Dana to Petra Trail (see page 5), and the other to enjoy the highlights of this stunning country. Amman is the gateway to Jordan and both our new trips start there. Arriving late in the evening after a direct flight, you’ll be welcomed by a friendly local representative who will help you through immigration and take you to your accommodation. During my trip to Jordan, I was lucky enough to visit some of the country’s key sites. Our itinerary started in the Dana Nature Reserve with spectacular views over the valley and the start of the famous Dana to Petra Trek snaking away below us. The trails here are well trodden and weave through the valley, with steady ascents and descents throughout; the paths are rocky underfoot but the views are breathtaking. We made our way to our first campsite

which was flanked by mountains comprised of limestone and sandstone. Sipping sweet tea around a camp fire, we got to know each other before retiring to our tents for a night under the stars. I’ve heard people rave about Petra and wasn’t sure if it could live up to its formidable reputation – but walking into Petra was truly magical. We took the back road from Little Petra to avoid the masses, following mountain ridges and passing local Bedouin families selling tea and trinkets. After a couple of hours’ walking, the top of The Monastery appeared in the distance and we entered ‘through the Back Door’, with plenty of time for a thorough exploration of this justifiably world-class site. Our walking days were accompanied by tales of historical rulers and stories of Bedouin traditions from our superb local guides. Hiking through the desert by day and huddled around an open fire by night, we felt as though we were experiencing Jordan in all its glory. The walking was hard at times, with sections of scrambling and short but steep climbs up sandstone boulders, but every part

Jordan’s spectacular landscapes are only matched by the incredible local hospitality; from local Bedouin families to shop owners in the bustling cities, we were always welcomed with open arms. Costa Rica Walking Amongst Nature Travel Consultant Sarah Harmon visited Costa Rica earlier this year, to research our new small group walking and nature tour which offers a taste of the country’s diverse ecosystems and rich wildlife.
C
osta Rica is high on many people’s bucket lists, so I jumped at the opportunity to visit this fascinating country last summer. While Costa Rica is already well known amongst wildlife enthusiasts, I was keen to find out what it had to offer the keen hiker who has a love of walking amongst nature. For its diminutive size, and with both Caribbean and Pacific coasts, Costa Rica packs a considerable punch in terms of variety of habitats and incredible biodiversity. Its government is progressive in its commitment to conservation and the environment (it aims to be carbon neutral by 2021), and also to supporting local communities – during my visit, I was fortunate enough to visit a local initiative that offers tourists a chance to plant a tree to help re-build some of the lost forest. Costa Rica is renowned for its pristine cloud forests and dramatic volcanoes. I visited both these Costa Rican ‘classics’ and, sufficiently impressed, we are including them in our new Nature Trails in Southern Costa Rica itinerary. This new trip begins in the capital, San José, from where we head south to the country’s first capital, Cartego, en route to the Irazú Volcano. Ascending the volcano we discover different types of vegetation as we walk through coffee plantations and past giant ferns; those who reach the top are rewarded by the sight of a mystical-looking green lake in the crater. Our next stop is at one of the country’s famous cloud forests, San Gerardo de Dota. We have time to trek through the
4
forest, do a spot of birdwatching and get a sneak peek into rural country living. Our new holiday also visits Dominical, Corcovado National Park and Marino Ballena National Park where there’s a chance to look for whales and dolphins offshore. Stunning waterfalls, turquoise seas and jungle-clad islands abound here, and we end the tour in the Osa Peninsula, in the south-west of the country. The mangrove-fringed reserve here is home to monkeys, reptiles, birds and other wildlife which we’ll look for during walks. We’ll also pan for gold, and learn how to make traditional sweets out of sugar cane and chocolate, before transferring back to San José for our flight home. Please do join us!
NEW Nature Trails in Southern Costa Rica Hike across Costa Rica’s rich and varied landscapes, from the cloud forests and peak of Irazú Volcano to the glorious white-sand beaches of Dominical. Enjoy cheese tasting during a visit to a livestock farm, and learn about making traditional sugarcane products. Look for wildlife as you walk in Corcovado and snorkel from Caño Island. Chile – Deserts, Mountains & Coast Travel Consultant Samantha Manning describes the highlights of a new walking trip to Chile which takes you into volcanically rich parks, on a hike up Villarrica Volcano and to enjoy some superb stargazing in the Atacama Desert.
T
he world’s narrowest country at an average of just 177km across, Chile hugs the Pacific coast of South America for a staggering 4,270km north to south. With the mighty Andes range forming a natural boundary to the east, Chile’s remarkable range of landscapes also includes rainforest, the Atacama Desert, glaciers, volcanoes and some picturesque beaches. It’s an ideal destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. I was lucky enough to visit Chile as part of a six-month trip to South America and our new walking holiday, which visits the north and centre of the country, is influenced by my time there. As well as its obviously breathtaking landscapes, I was particularly struck by the country’s rich history of colonial, and indigenous cultures, which together combine to make the locals completely unique and unlike anyone else in the world. On our new Walk in Chile’s Lake District & Desert itinerary you’ll have the chance to discover a number of these different cultures, accompanied by local guides who can give you a true insight into each region. The trip begins and ends in the capital, Santiago. European settlers arrived here in the 1500s and their influence is still seen everywhere in its architecture. Our itinerary gives you time to explore the city’s markets, back streets and characterful neighbourhoods that are little visited by tourists. If time permits, the walk up to the viewpoint at Cerro San Cristobel is worthwhile for spectacular views over the entire city. On my own trip I headed south to Chile’s celebrated Lake District, or Pucón region, where my base for five nights was in a simple ecolodge. My walks followed a mixture of forest trails, volcano hikes and national park walks, along well-trodden tracks and wooden pathways. The spectacular scenery includes deep blue lakes, lush green forest and snow-capped peaks all in one breathtaking view! We have included some of these incredible walks in our new itinerary, as well as a visit to a community tourism project where you will meet a local family who
8
run a bee farm. You will learn about the typical Andean Mapuche architecture and history, natural herbal medicine and Pewenche gastronomy. For the second half of your trip you travel north to the desert town of San Pedro de Atacama, situated on an arid plateau in the high Andes. This is one of the best places in the world for stargazing, and your time in this area begins with an astronomical tour. Walks in this region will be shorter than for the first half of the trip, as the altitude has increased (to about 2,400m). The scenery is stunning and distinctive. You’ll walk past red-hued mountains, incredible rock formations and across a landscape that resembles the surface of the Moon and which provides a complete contrast to the first half of the tour. For anyone wanting to extend their time in Chile, we are also offering two exciting extensions. The first is a short art and wine tour which includes time exploring the famous and colourful city of Valparaiso – you’ll see its iconic street art-covered building, and stop at a winery to sample famous Chilean wine. The second is a four-night stay on Easter Island, exploring this remote Polynesian outpost and its world-famous Moai statues (stone heads).
NEW Walk in Chile’s Lake District & Desert Traverse Chile’s many different terrains from the lush forests of Villarrica National Park to Pichillancahue glacier and the vast dry deserts of the Atacama. Ascend Villarrica Volcano and learn about beekeeping from the Mapuche people on a community tourism project. Extend your stay in colourful Valparaiso or exploring iconic Easter Island and the famous Moai heads. Highlights • Hike volcanic, desert & forested landscapes • Meet indigenous Mapuche people • Ascend active Volcano Villarrica Departs: 8 Nov 2020 & 14 Mar 2021 15 days from £2,999

Escaping into the Alpujarras Team Member Mel Kinder set out on Andalucia’s famous GR7 route last spring, and found herself walking amongst whitewashed villages, Moorish waterways and beautiful orchards under a warm Mediterranean sun.
I
n the late 15th century, the last surviving Moors in Spain fled to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada – known locally as the Alpujarras. Here, as well as building distinctive white-washed houses which remain an attractive feature of the region, they established a system of water irrigation channels (acequias) to direct the melting snow water from the higher peaks of the Sierra Nevada down to their farms. This system is still used by the farmers of the Alpujarras today, and remains a rich and productive farming area. I set out with my husband on our Andalucia: Along the GR7 holiday this spring, travelling from west to east. Starting in Lanjáron, the route leads up to Spain’s highest village, Trevélez, before descending towards the final destination of a working vineyard and organic farm near Cádiar. The first day’s walk took us much higher, but parallel to, the main road traversing the foot of the Alpujarran Valley: we could see the road snaking its way along below us. From day two onwards, we saw far less human infrastructure as our walks headed deeper into the Alpujarra’s hills and valleys, along narrow paths, deserted tracks and past acequias, and eventually reaching white-washed towns perched on distant hills. The region’s flora is a mixture of agaves, grasses and scrub, with a lovely mix of wildflowers including purple scabious, huge daisies, fuchsia-pink sweet peas, and yellow broom, to name a few. May was certainly a great time to visit in terms of variety of colour and plants. The walking also takes you past almond and olive groves, holm oaks and between fragrant pine forests, where the ground softens underfoot. At the end of the shorter walk on day three, arriving at the hotel
12
in Mecina Fondales was like stepping into an Andalucian oasis. Its comfortable, sizeable bedrooms, rose-filled garden and large swimming pool were very welcome to weary feet! The following day, we had a long ascent towards Trevélez. After plenty of walking up and downhill, crossing of streams and some superb mountain views (with the gentle tinkling of goats’ bells drifting in and out of earshot), we grew ever nearer to the snowcapped peak of Spain’s highest mountain – Mulhacén. The final day’s walk was mostly downhill as we meandered through some fairly rocky and dramatic scenery to arrive at Cádiar. Welcome beers all round! A visit to the impressive Alhambra Palace in Granada is a highlight, and an exploration of the extensive gardens and numerous buildings (you must book this in advance) demands several hours to do it justice. I also recommend taking your time to explore the rest of Granada on foot, enjoying the many delightful cafés, tapas, and relaxed atmosphere of this fascinating city.
Andalucia: Along the GR7 Traverse the last Moorish stronghold in Spain as you walk point-to-point across the rolling foothills of the Sierra Nevada in the fragrant Alpujarran countryside. Pass through woodland, along goat trails and climb to reach Spain’s highest village. Don’t depart before enjoying the cultural and culinary delights of nearby Granada.
