Holy Year on the Camino de Santiago
As an official Holy Year for the Way of St James, 2021 should have been huge – with a plethora of events, extra services, and many more pilgrims than in a normal year – so the news that this has been extended to 2022 is welcome for walkers!
AHoly Year occurs whenever the feast day of St. James (25 July), the patron saint of the Camino (in Spanish he is known as Santiago), falls on a Sunday. Known as a Xacobeo (Jacobean Year), this phenomenon occurs only once every five or six years, or sometimes - due to an intervening leap year - 11 years. The last one was in 2010 and the next will not be until 2027.
During this 12-month period pilgrims can enter Santiago de Compostela’s cathedral through the Porta Santa (Holy Door), which remains open for the entire year – this unique experience makes it a very special time to visit. As a result, a Holy Year draws many pilgrims and the atmosphere is always vibrant. Everyone expected a record number of pilgrims on the Camino in 2021 and predicted that it would be the most significant year in living memory, however 2021 obviously suffered major disruption due to the pandemic, as a result of the restrictions on travel.
The good news is that Pope Francis declared that Holy Year
celebrations would be extended into 2022 to give more people the opportunity to visit. There are many reasons for walking the Camino but, particularly for those who do it with a spiritual or religious intention, a Holy Year has a special significance – and leisure walkers can join in the fiesta and witness special events which may not usually occur. So, 2022 is destined to be another great year for the Camino.
We offer three classic Camino de Santiago walking routes – all of which cover the final 100 kilometres thereby qualifying you for an official pilgrim’s certificate on arrival at Santiago de Compostela. Two of these follow the final part of the French Route, while the third was followed by pilgrims heading north from Portugal. The months leading up to the Feast of St. James are destined to be busy, so take our advice and book early!
The feeling of celebration, sense of friendship, and the spirit of community are all truly alive and well in Galicia!

Costa Rica Walking Amongst Nature
Costa Rica is high on many people’s bucket lists, so I jumped at the opportunity to visit this fascinating country. While Costa Rica is already well known amongst wildlife enthusiasts, I was keen to find out what it had to offer the keen hiker who has a love of walking amongst nature.
For its diminutive size, and with both Caribbean and Pacific coasts, Costa Rica packs a considerable punch in terms of variety of habitats and incredible biodiversity. Its government is progressive in its commitment to conservation and the environment (it is a world leader in the race to be carbon neutral and recently won the Earthshot Protect & Restore Nature Prize), and also supporting local communities. During my visit, I was fortunate enough to visit a local initiative that offers tourists a chance to plant a tree to help re-build some of the lost forest.
Costa Rica is renowned for its pristine cloud forests and dramatic volcanoes. I visited both these Costa Rican ‘classics’ which are included in our Nature Trails in Southern Costa Rica itinerary. Our trip begins in the capital, San José, from where we head south to the country’s first capital, Cartego, en route to the Irazú Volcano. Ascending the volcano we discover different types of vegetation as we walk through coffee plantations and past giant ferns; those who reach the top are rewarded by the sight of a mystical-looking green lake in the crater. Our next stop is at one of the country’s famous cloud forests, San Gerardo de Dota. We have time to trek
Our holiday also visits Dominical, Corcovado National Park and Marino Ballena National Park where there is a chance to look for whales and dolphins offshore. Stunning waterfalls, turquoise seas and jungle-clad islands abound here, and we end the tour in the Osa Peninsula, in the south-west of the country. The mangrovefringed reserve here is home to monkeys, reptiles, birds and other wildlife which we will look for during walks. We also pan for gold, and learn how to make traditional sweets out of sugar cane and chocolate, before transferring back to San José for our flight home. Please do join us!

“An excellent holiday. Each day provided a different walking experience, some tough, some easy with an intriguing mix of locations.” Martin, Hiking in the Pindos Mountains, September 2020
The Corfu Trail
The lovely Greek island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea faces the coast of Albania and the north-western part of mainland Greece across a narrow strait. Known as Korkyra in ancient times, its history is inextricably linked with that of Greece and marked by numerous battles. In the fifth century BC, along with Athens and Corinth, it was one of Greece’s three great naval powers, as evidenced by its many ruined temples and archaeological sites.
Two mountain ranges divide Corfu in three: the mountainous north, the undulating central region and the low-lying south. The more important range runs east-west, reaching its greatest height at Mount Pantokrator (911m). The island is composed of many fascinating limestone formations, and the numerous beaches along its magnificent coastline make it a popular tourist destination.
It is a fantastic place to explore on foot, with spectacular routes that take in its varied terrain and beautiful scenery – from the rolling landscapes of the south to the mountainous north – making no day the same. Our walking holidays all feature the world-famous Corfu Trail; take your pick of holiday lengths from 8, 10 and 15 days, all of which will leave you longing for more!
Established in 2001, the Corfu Trail has become regarded as a challenging and highly rewarding walking route. The perfect months to walk the 220 kilometre trail are May, June, September and October, when the days are cooler and the air is clear.
Avoiding the main tourist areas, your walk traverses down rural tracks and through picturesque olive groves and vineyards. The landscape is soon replaced with orange trees and the aroma of sweet orange blossom fills the air. Tranquil lakes harbour terrapins, brightly coloured frogs, majestic shrikes and a blur of swallows plucking flies from the air above capture your attention. Beautiful wildflowers accompany you along the whole of the Corfu Trail, and your days often end with descents to long golden beaches where you stop for dinner at a delightful seafront taverna.
There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the warm, azure waters of the Ionian Sea – stretches of sand invite you to take off your walking boots, periodically cooling your feet in the gentle sea. As the beach comes to an end – for now – you head into the sand dunes where the beautiful Lake Korission reveals itself for the first time. As you walk along the thin strip of land keep an eye out for the brightly coloured flamingos which can often be seen here.
For the experienced hiker there are two peaks to look forward to – Mount Pantokrator and Agi Deka – the highest summits on the island. Your efforts are rewarded with fantastic panoramic views, giving a great perspective of the distance already covered. Ascents and descents are broken up by picturesque villages offering refreshment, with the freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice particularly welcome!
Who would not want to stay on this magical island as long as possible?
