THE NATURAL ROOM

At our new showroom we are delighted to create The Natural Room, to bring the outside in. The central display of traditional and new baskets will be suspended from the ceiling. These have been commissioned from makers all over the UK, exploring differing weaving techniques and the use of natural materials; from straw and willow to hazel and birch. The Natural Room demonstrates the variations of regional basketry, influenced by traditional usage; from carrying vegetables to catching lobsters. Each represents imaginative solutions dating back to Neolithic periods. Alongside this display will be innovative crafted collections of beautiful unique furniture displays and lighting designs.

HERITAGE BASKETS

We will create beautiful bundles of baskets that explore differing weaves, useage and natural materials, hand-woven by makers; Hilary Burns, Nick McMillen, Tim Johnson, Michelle Mateo, Dominic Parrette, Clare Rivera, Florence Hamer, Rachel Frost, Alex Walshaw, Hopewood Baskets and Lin Lovekin. Home-grown materials include; red cedar bark, willow and heather, have been used to explore extraordinary variations of regional basketry. Collectively, the makers have been influenced by traditional usage; from carrying vegetables to catching lobsters, each represents imaginative solutions dating back to Neolithic periods.

WELCOME COLLECTION

Welcome Collection designed by Matthew Raw draws inspiration from building facades and historical surface application of tiled buildings. The Welcome Dining Table has a solid oak top with two fully tiled cylindrical columns at the base, finished with two inlaid circular tiled areas on the surface, as though the columns emerge through the timber top. The hand-built tiles used on the table are the same proportion as the welcome range and come in a range of custom glazes, suitable for the top. Matthew has collaborated with two different craftspeople to product the forms on which he then applies his handmade tiles. Whilst Mudlarking on the River Thames, Matthew was fascinated by the pottery sherds that had washed up on the foreshore. He took inspiration from the sherds and their varied hues in creating the glaze for this table.

BRODGAR COLLECTION

The Brodgar Bench (with drawer) is an extension of the iconic occasional Brodgar chair launched in 2012 and forms part of an exclusive range of straw-woven furniture rooted in the Orkney craft tradition. Designed and made as a collaboration between furniture maker-designer Gareth Neal and Orkney-based straw furniture maker, Kevin Gauld, it harmoniously combines the Windsor chair vernacular with the warm texture of woven straw.

ON THE LOOM

Over the next six months, we will be exploring the heritage of British blankets, throws and cushions. We will investigate geographical variations in heritage weaving and natural materials. London-based weaver, Catarina Riccabona, often creates beautifully unique designs spontaneously whilst weaving on the loom. Each of her throws are highly individual, characterised by slight irregularities, rich textures and subtle colouring that are typical of her pieces. Her handwoven alpaca throws will form part of our ‘On the loom’ collection.
