Students  in  the  Latino  Cultural  Center  (LCC)  DUH WU\LQJ WR VDYH D PXUDO ORFDWHG LQ WKHLU RIÂżFH RI the  basement  of  the  Student  Union  (SU)  that  school  RIÂżFLDOV DUH FRQVLGHULQJ SDLQWLQJ RYHU â&#x20AC;&#x153;We  would  like  to  see  the  mural  stand  for  the  students  because  it  was  made  by  the  students,â&#x20AC;?  Vice  3UHVLGHQW RI /&& 'DOLD +HUUHUD VDLG The  work  on  the  mural  did  not  begin  until  af-­ ter  students  returned  from  spring  break  on  March  ,W ZDV D FROODERUDWLYH HIIRUW IURP /&& ( ERDUG members,  students  of  SUNY  New  Paltz,  high  school  students  and  children  from  a  local  group  home,   +HUUHUD VDLG Michael  Patterson,  director  of  Student  Activi-­ ties  and  Union  Services,  said  the  mural  was  painted  ZLWKRXW FROOHJH DXWKRUL]DWLRQ During  the  last  week  of  February,  Patterson  found  out  about  LCCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  plan  to  paint  a  mural  in  their  RIÂżFH +H VDLG WKH PXUDO ZDV VRPHWKLQJ WKDW FDQ EH considered,  but  for  it  to  be  reviewed  and  approved,  the  club  must  provide  a  sketch  of  the  mural  so  Patter-­ VRQ FDQ XQGHUVWDQG ZKDW WKHLU PXUDO ZDV JRLQJ WR EH

Several  restrictions  were  placed  on  funding  for  student  organizations  by  members  of  the  Stu-­ dent  Association  (SA)  during  Budget  and  Finance  Committee  (BFC)  Weekend.   Vice  President  of  Finance  Youssouf  Kouyo  said  this  semester  and  last  semester,  SA  organiza-­ tions  depleted  the  general  programing  line  of  the  budget,  and  something  had  to  be  done  to  prevent  that  from  reoccuring.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;We  ran  out  of  money  [in  general  program-­ ming]   by  the  middle  of  the  semester,â&#x20AC;?  Kouyo  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;We  were  wondering  why  we  were  running  out  of  money  so  fast.â&#x20AC;?

Kouyo  and  the  BFC  assembled  on  March  30  and  31  and  placed  stipulations  on  how  money  is  to  be  requested  for  the  general  programming  fund  in  the  next  academic  year.

To  deter  this  from  happening  next  year,  BFC  and  Kouyo  decided  to  set  general  stipulations  for  all  organizations  that  are  funded  by  the  mandatory  student  activity  fee.   These  stipulations  come  after  ¿ QGLQJ RXW WKDW LQ WKH Âż VFDO \HDU RI WKHUH will  be  $179,785  in  the  general  programming  fund.  That  is  $31,215  less  than  what  was  available  this  year.  Kouyo  said  one  of  the  biggest  changes  made  during  BFC  Budget  Preparation  Weekend  was  that  RUJDQL]DWLRQV ZLWK OLQH LWHPV RU D EXGJHW VSHFLÂż F to  their  club,  cannot  go  into  general  programming.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;This  year  [student  clubs  and  organizations  with  line  items]  were  allowed  to  go  into  general  programming  and  some  of  the  clubs  were  being  a  little  too  greedy,â&#x20AC;?  Kouyo  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;And  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  not  fair  to  the  other  clubs.â&#x20AC;?

Changes  were  also  made  to  funding  for  transportation.  Only  two  thirds  of  total  transport  costs  will  be  covered  by  SA.  Kouyo  said  most  of  the  time  SA  paid  the  full  amount  for  transportation  for  trips.  However,  because  of  the  foreseen  bud-­ get  constraints,  student  organizations  will  have  to  come  up  with  the  other  one  third  of  the  cost.  Kouyo  suggested  that  student  organizations  can  make  up  the  difference  in  trip  funding  by  charging  students  $5  to  $10  to  attend.  They  also  tightened  some  of  the  restrictions  on  the  funding  for  certain  events.  Student  organi-­ zations  who  violate  SAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  new  policies  or  constitu-­ tion  will  not  receive  funding.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some  of  the  clubs  are  holding  events  in  bars  which  involve  alcohol,â&#x20AC;?  Kouyo  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  direct  violation  of  our  insurance  policy.â&#x20AC;?

Kouyo  said  the  insurance  policy  states  that  SA  can  only  fund  an  event  if  thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  no  alcohol  involved.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  think  that  BFC  did  a  great  job  and  they  really  worked  hard  to  construct  the  budget  so  that  LW ZDV LQ WKH EHQHÂż W RI WKH FDPSXV ´ &RDNOH\ VDLG â&#x20AC;&#x153;They  really  did  a  lot  of  work  in  two  or  three  days  so  I  commend  them  for  their  job.â&#x20AC;?

At  their  12th  general  meeting,  the  53rd  stu-­ dent  senate  went  over  a  declaration  drafted  by  members  of  Student  Association  (SA)  regard-­ ing  a  mural  painted  in  the  Latino  Cultural  Center  (LCC)  without  college  approval,  and  went  over  the  changes  made  in  the  SA  constitution  during  the  constitutional  convention.

Senate  Chair  Alberto  Aquino  invited  Mi-­ chael  Patterson,  director  of  student  activities  and  union  services  and  advisor  to  the  student  senate,  to  speak  on  the  issue  of  the  LCCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  mural  painted  in  the  Student  Union  (SU).  He  said  the  mural  was  painted  without  his  authorization  or  the  schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  approval.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  group  did  not  have  authority  to  do  the  mural,  we  gave  reasonable  alternatives  for  the  group  to  do,â&#x20AC;?  Patterson  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;They  chose  not  to  regard  that  [and]  they  chose  not  to  respond  to  our  request  to  come  meet  with  us.â&#x20AC;?

Representatives  of  the  LCC  were  also  pres-­ ent  at  the  meeting.  Dalia  Herrera,  vice  president  of  the  LCC,  stood  in  front  of  senate  to  discuss  why  the  mural  should  remain.  She  acknowledged  her  organization  painted  the  mural  without  col-­ lege  authorization  and  said  the  LCC  never  in-­ tended  to  disrespect  members  of  the  Student  Ac-­ tivities  and  Union  Services.

Aquino  asked  both  Patterson  and  members  of  LCC  to  leave  the  room  so  that  he  and  the  legis-­ lative  body  could  discuss  a  declaration  that  mem-­ bers  of  SA  drafted  regarding  the  mural.  The  dec-­ laration  acknowledged  the  fact  that  the  club  went  against  school  policy,  but  in  this  case  the  â&#x20AC;&#x153;ends  outweigh  the  means.â&#x20AC;?  He  said  LCC  is  a  unique  organization,  as  it  maintains  a  museum  within  the  Student  Union  (SU).  It  would  be  less  harmful  to  keep  the  mural  up  than  take  it  down.

The  majority  of  the  legislative  body  voted  in  favor  of  approving  the  declaration  and  Cohenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  motion.

Ayanna  Thomas,  vice  president  of  Gov-­ ernance  and  Academic  Affairs,  went  over  the  changes  made  to  the  constitution  during  the  con-­ stitutional  convention.  Changes  were  made  to  clarify  and  specify  parts  of  the  document.  The  bills  created  this  academic  year  were  incorpo-­ rated  into  the  constitution  during  the  conven-­ tion.  This  includes  the  bill  affecting  the  ability  of  school  clubs  and  organizations  to  appeal  Budget  and  Finance  Committeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s   decision  before  senate  and  the  creation  of  the  student  concerns  commit-­ tee.   The  next  senate  meeting  will  be  on  Tuesday,  May  1  in  SU  418  at  8:45  p.m.

After  years  of  student  activism  in  support  of  the  change,  the  Department  of  Residence  Life  will  be  offering  gender-­neutral  housing  options  for  next  year.  Rafael  Calderon,  coordinator  of  housing  opera-­ tions,  announced  in  a  campus-­wide  email  last  Friday  that  Bevier  112,  Lefevre  111  and  Lefevre  301  will  be  converted  to  gender-­neutral  suites.  This  gives  20  students  the  chance  to  live  in  suites  with  rooms  for  both  males  and  females.  While  he  said  he  is  unsure  of  what  the  demand  for  gender-­neutral  housing  options  will  be  in  the  fu-­ ture,  the  Department  of  Residence  Life  is  open  to  expanding  offerings  in  the  coming  years.  ³:H ÂżJXUHG ZHÂśG WDNH WKLV OLWWOH VWHS ÂżUVW ´ &DOGHURQ VDLG Âł,I LW ZRUNV RXW ZHOO ZHÂśOO DGG PRUH IRU WKH IROORZLQJ \HDU ´ The  proposal  to  allow  gender-­neutral  housing  ZDV EURXJKW WR 3UHVLGHQW 'RQDOG &KULVWLDQÂśV FDELQHW by  Student  Association  (SA)  Executive  Vice  Presi-­ GHQW (YH 6WHUQ ODVW ZHHN 6KH VDLG VKH KDV EHHQ UH-­ VHDUFKLQJ WKH VXEMHFW IRU WZR \HDUV WR ÂżJXUH RXW D way  to  bring  it  to  SUNY  New  Paltz.  6WHUQ VDLG ZKHQ VKH WRRN XS WKLV LQLWLDWLYH VKH EHJDQ ORRNLQJ LQWR ZD\V VFKRROV OLNH 681< *HQ-­ eseo  and  others  set  up  gender-­neutral  housing  which  helped  her  formulate  a  proposal  to  bring  to  adminis-­ trators.  The  last  step  of  this  process  was  administer-­ ing  a  survey  to  students.  $IWHU EHLQJ RSHQ IRU DSSUR[LPDWHO\ WZR ZHHNV 1,042  students  responded  to  the  survey  by  the  time  it  FORVHG ODVW ZHHN ZLWK JHQHUDOO\ SRVLWLYH UHDFWLRQV WR the  idea  of  gender-­neutral  housing,  Stern  said.  ³, ZDV YHU\ KDSS\ ZLWK WKH UHVXOWV ´ VKH VDLG Âł7KH WKLQJ WKDW , WKLQN , ZDV PRVW LQWHUHVWHG DERXW was  in  the  open  response  question  because  973  SHRSOH WRRN WKH WLPH WR ZULWH D ZRUG RU HYHQ D SDUD-­ JUDSK , IHOW OLNH WKDW ZDV PRVW LQVLJKWIXO EHFDXVH it  really  gave  me  a  good  feeling  of  how  students  WKRXJKW RI WKLV ´ The  survey  results  indicated  61.8  percent  of  students  who  responded  would  be  â&#x20AC;&#x153;very  comfort-­ DEOH´ OLYLQJ RQ D FDPSXV LQ ZKLFK JHQGHU QHXWUDO housing  was  offered,  whereas  1.9  percent  said  they  would  not  be  comfortable  at  all.  Stern  compiled  all  of  the  survey  results  and  her  own  personal  research  in  a  presentation  for  the  presi-­ GHQWÂśV FDELQHW ODVW 7KXUVGD\ Christian  said  the  results  of  the  survey,  in  addi-­ WLRQ WR GLVFXVVLRQV KHÂśV KDG ZLWK PHPEHUV RI 6$ KLV student  advisory  group  and  others  convinced  college  RIÂżFLDOV JHQGHU QHXWUDO KRXVLQJ RSWLRQV VKRXOG EH available  on  campus. Âł:H KDYH KHDUG IURP VWXGHQWV DQG , WKLQN WKH survey  SA  sent  out  really  showed  that  students  are  interested  in  this  and  that  they  seem  to  be  mature  on  KRZ WKH\ WKLQN DERXW LW ´ KH VDLG Calderon  said  suite-­style  rooms  were  cho-­ sen  to  be  gender  neutral  because  they  have  private   bathrooms.  Signups  for  the  rooms  began  on  Monday.  He Â

said  students  who  already  signed  up  for  another  room  during  housing  registration,  which  began  on  April  7,  could  be  removed  from  their  other  room  assignment  and  replaced  in  a  gender-­neutral  suite  if  they  wanted.

Sen.  Joskary  Diaz  has  a  goal  to  start  a   science  lab.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ever  since  I  was  a  freshman  I  wanted  to  ma-­ jor  in  biology,  but  I  realized  it  was  hard,â&#x20AC;?  Diaz  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;And  it  was  hard  enough  to  get  the  professors  at-­ tention  because  it  was  a  lecture  and  he  has  like  200  students.â&#x20AC;?

Kabir  said  this  is  not  only  a  viable  option,  but  also  a  good  way  to  assist  students.  She  said  this Â

would  be  the  best  way  to  help  students  succeed  in  their  general  education  classes.   Diaz  said  as  a  student  senator  she  has  had  a  lot  of  encouragement  surrounding  this  topic  because  VWXGHQWV ZDQW WR H[FHO LQ WKHLU FODVVHV Fourth-­year  English  major  John  Sotomayor  said  a  science  lab  would  be  helpful.  He  said  New  Paltz  generally  focuses  on  liberal  arts  and  although  that  is  helpful,  he  wishes  he  had  more  support  in  the  sciences.  Diaz  said  the  science  lab  would  be  opened  in  a  lab  in  either  the  Coykendall  Science  Building  or  in  the  math  lab  by  splitting  it  to  make  accommo-­ dations.  Professors  and  students  will  be  sought  to  volunteer  in  the  lab. The  intention  of  the  fund  is  to  give  the  stu-­ dents  enough  money  to  allow  them  to  graduate,  Cross  said.  The  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Crossing  the  Finish  Line  Fundâ&#x20AC;?  endowment  is  focused  on  third-­  and  fourth-­ year  students,  yet  the  foundation  offers  a  lot  of  scholarships  that  appeal  to  different  students  of   different  years.

New  Paltz  Central  School  Board  Trustee  Bob  Rich  announced  on  March  21  he  is  resigning  from  his  seat,  effective  June  30.

Rich  said  he  made  the  decision  to  resign  due  to  the  time  constraints  caused  E\ KLV ZRUN DV D WULDO DWWRUQH\ $V KLV ÂżUP took  on  more  people  in  recent  months,  Rich  said  the  hours  â&#x20AC;&#x201D;  now  including  mentoring  â&#x20AC;&#x201D;   were  more  demanding,  causing  him  to  have  to  drop  off  certain  committees.  Rich  said  the  committees  he  was  in-­ volved  in  included  the  facilities  and  audit  committees,  which  focus  on  the  necessary  physical  repairs  to  the  multiple  buildings  LQ WKH GLVWULFW DQG H[DPLQH WKH VFKRRO GLV-­ WULFWÂśV XVH RI WD[ GROODUV WR HQVXUH WUDQVSDU-­ ency,  respectively.  These  committees  meet  either  once  a  week  or  every  other  week.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  started  dropping  committees,  try-­ ing  to  be  equitable,â&#x20AC;?  Rich  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  more  responsible  thing  was  to  resign.â&#x20AC;?

Rich  served  on  the  school  board  for  VL[ \HDUV VWDUWLQJ LQ ,Q KH UDQ once  more  and  has  served  on  the  board  ever  since.  In  his  time  as  a  trustee,  Rich  said  the  board  has  always  taken  responsibility  for  the  academic  success  of  the  district,  which  has  been  named  on  lists  by  U.S.  News  &  World  Report  as  one  of  the  top  public  schools  in  the  country.  ³:HÂśYH PDGH LW RQ WKHVH OLVWV ´ 5LFK said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;But,  not  by  accident  or  overnight.â&#x20AC;?

Boaters can get their feet wet around the Hudson Valley by following a new map.

“The map is illustrated with original art works by noted Hudson Valley art-­ ists featuring scenes painted along the river,” President of BillsMaps, Inc. Bill Newman said.

The Mid & Upper Hudson River Es-­ tuary Map runs from Peekskill to Troy. It pinpoints places of interest, such as mari-­ nas, boat clubs, farmers’ markets and his-­ toric sites. Along the way, there are artists’ renditions of paintings that give the visitor an idea of what to expect when they dock in a nearby, geographical hub of activity.

Fred LeBrun, columnist from The Albany Times Union, said the map offers updated information about the landscape.

“A pretty and practical trove of the useful and delightful about the Hudson Valley, from Peekskill to Waterford,” he VDLG ³$ ¿QH PDS DQG JXLGH RIIHULQJ D fresh, up-­to-­date look at a familiar and be-­ loved riverscape.”

Newman said that the map was a col-­ laborative effort among “many minds and hands.”

One painting featured that was done by a New Paltz student depicted a desert called Unbound Pink Cupcake. Third-­year anthropology major Zoë Krumanocker painted the sweet treat for the map. ³, GLG WKH SDLQWLQJ DV D UHÀHFWLRQ RI my enormous sweet tooth, and love of cupcakes!” she said. “The Hudson Valley certainly has an abundance of wonderful bakeries, many of which [Newman] in-­

cluded on his map.”

The pink cupcake contrasts with the color scheme of the background which primarily consists of blue, green and yel-­ low tiles. According to the map, the cup-­ cake sits above a list of the “Hudson Val-­ ley’s Yummiest Bakeries.”

Krumanocker said she was glad to be featured on the map and that her work can highlight the culinary side the Hudson Valley has to offer.

“I am delighted that they are being recognized on the estuary map, and that my artwork can accompany these tasty Hudson Valley hot spots,” she said.

Most of the other portraits on the map highlight the scenic views of the valley such as river-­front properties, wetlands, increasingly elevating mountains and docked ships among other scenes.

Mayor of Peekskill Mary Foster said that the map is useful and a “must have for all boaters.” She praised Newman’s efforts for taking the time and crafting it.

“He has a unique appreciation of the local Hudson River communities and the amenities they offer,” Foster said.

The map goes into detail of where boaters can dock and explore the city, such as in Albany, N.Y. This includes bus routes with the idea that boaters will be on foot.

However, the map makes it clear that its intended purpose is recreational and is not to be used as a means of navigation for boaters.

Beyond The ‘Normal’ TRANSGENDER ATTORNEY AND ACTIVIST SPEAKS ON CAMPUS

I’ve always had an interest in the intersection of culture and epistemology, starting with an earlier ar-­ ticle on the role of research methodology in Africana Studies. By distinguishing between European-­orient-­ ed and African-­oriented worldview assumptions it became evident that the European-­oriented assump-­ tion of “objectivity” has continuously and negatively impacted the accurate interpretation of Africana life, history and culture, due to the necessity of separation and detachment which is an outgrowth of a uniquely European-­oriented orientation to the universe.

Publication date: 2013 Theme: This article will engage questions of epis-­ temology especially as they relate to the African worldview framework.

What makes it unique?

This article will build upon my previous work on the African worldview and its impact upon meth-­ odological questions in Africana/Black Studies. In my previous work I have broadly engaged questions of epistemology, especially the distinctions between European-­oriented and African-­oriented epistemo-­ logical assumptions. However, this article will focus primarily on questions of epistemology as it relates to processes of knowledge acquisition and the ac-­ companying processes of knowledge transmission.

I’ll be building off the work of scholars within Afri-­ can-­centered philosophy and social theory who pre-­ viously engaged these ideas in the 1980s and 1990s.

However, it is my intention to synthesize their work and expand upon it as it relates to my previous work on the African worldview framework in Africana/ Black Studies.

Things are not always as black and white as they may ap-­ pear and sometimes people are forced to look beyond societal constructs. A recent queer studies lecture encouraged people to do just that.

On Friday, April 20, Dean Spade, transgender attorney, activist and professor of sociology at the Seattle University of Law, stirred the New Paltz community with a talk in Lecture Center 102 on his recent book, “Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans Politics and the Limits of Law.” The lecture was sponsored by the Women’s Studies De-­ partment, Sociology Department, Queer Action Coalition, , the dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Campus Auxiliary Service and the Department of Academic Affairs.

“Normal Life,” published in 2011 by South End Press, challenges current, mainstream gay rights movements and how most evident gay and lesbian rights throughout the last decade failed to confront societal constructs such as racism, capitalism, poverty, immigration and criminalization, Spade said.

According to 7KH +XI¿ QJWRQ 3RVW article, “What’s Wrong With Gay Rights?” Dean Spade Addresses the Problem in ‘Normal Life,’” Spade’s book is “a rethinking of desires for inclusion in marriage, the military, the Census and the police IRUFH 6SDGH DUJXHV WKDW E\ ¿ JKWLQJ IRU DFFHSWDQFH LQ WKHVH LQ stitutions, the power of those systems is enhanced — the very systems designed to marginalize the most vulnerable members of the transgender community, low-­income people and people of color.”

Spade said he wrote the book based on his experience as D QRQSUR¿ W ODZ\HU SURYLGLQJ IUHH OHJDO VHUYLFHV WR WUDQVJHQ der, lesbian, gay and gender non-­conforming people under the Silvio-­Rivera Law Project (SRLP), created in 2002.

“I started the SRLP project to provide free legal help. It works to build trans resistance that is anti-­racist and anti-­cap-­ italist,” Spade said. &OLHQWV 6SDGH ZRUNHG ZLWK LQ WKH SDVW ZHUH XQDEOH WR ¿ QG work due to discrimination and violence, according to the ar-­ ticle. Desperate and starving, they turned to illegal work such as prostitution.

Spade wrote in his book: “[My clients] had no hope of ¿ QGLQJ OHJDO HPSOR\PHQW EHFDXVH RI WKH ELDV DQG YLROHQFH they faced, and therefore turned to a combination of public EHQH¿ WV DQG FULPLQDOL]HG ZRUN ² RIWHQ LQ WKH VH[ WUDGH ² LQ order to survive. This meant constant exposure to the criminal justice system, where they were inevitably locked into gender segregated facilities that placed them according to birth gender and exposed them to further violence.”

Sociology and Women’s Studies Professor Karl Bryant said he has known Spade professionally for 10 years and has followed his work and taught it in his classes.

Bryant said Spade is a “prisoner abolitionist.” “[Spade] critically reviews society’s approach to orga-­ nizations such as capitalism and the criminal justice system which doesn’t provide a remedy,” Spade said.

Mainstream LGBTQ organizations pitch that they are equal to everyone else and deserve the same rights, Bryant said. Contrary to popular belief, this is incorrect. In fact, the LGBTQ community has different needs than what societal constructs can offer, Bryant said.

“This is the wrong approach. We need to think about how we are different. Dean says there is a radical history that shows queer politics is different. It is based around a long history of queer people who have non-­monogamous, open relationships.

It argues everyone should have health care and other rights despite marital status,” Bryant said.

Sarah Pepe, a fourth-­year Women’s Studies major, said Spade’s lecture made her think about the U.S. criminal justice system in a new light. She said after hearing him speak she would like to read up on prison abolition.

Pepe said within the LGBTQ community, equality is not extended to all members.

“I think large parts of the LGBTQ community are well accepted compared to even 10 or 20 years ago, but the most marginalized parts of this community [i.e. trans people from all walks of life and LGBTQ folks who are poor/disabled/of color, etc.] still have a long way to go,” Pepe said.

In the future, Spade said he wants to see a transition in the societal structures.

“I am hoping we can build queer and trans politics with no police, no prisons, no borders and no poverty,” Spade said.

More  than  a  month  ago  many  young  people  clicked  â&#x20AC;&#x153;shareâ&#x20AC;?  on  Facebook  after  watching  a  movie  with  the  intention  of  and  spreading  awareness,  but  they  also  raised  controversy  around  the  world:  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kony  2012.â&#x20AC;?  On  Tuesday,  April  17  Amnesty  Inter-­ national  hosted  a  faculty  event  titled  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Facts:  An  Open  Panel  Discussion  on  Kony  2012.â&#x20AC;?  It  was  held  to  discuss  controversy  surrounding  the  Kony  2012  video  and  campaign  started  by  Invisible  Children  on  March  5,  2012.

The  event  addressed  the  validity  of  Invisible  Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  claims,  as  well  as  the  actions  taken  after  the  video  went  viral.   The  panel  addressed  the  â&#x20AC;&#x153;manicâ&#x20AC;?  behav-­ ior  of  the  director,  how  quickly  the  video  went  â&#x20AC;&#x153;viral,â&#x20AC;?  as  well  as  the  allocation  of  proceeds.  Zeverin  Emagalit  of  the  Black  Stud-­ ies  Department  said  it  was  important  to  â&#x20AC;&#x153;expose  the  past  evils  of  war  and  Joseph Â

Although  Brian  Obach,  chair  of  the  Sociology  Department,  said  the  call  for  military  actions  on  behalf  of  the  United  States  was  outlandish,  the  panel  believed  the  campaign  was  a  well  thought  out,  sim-­ SOLÂż FDWLRQ RI WKH ODUJH LVVXH DQG WDUJHWHG the  correct  audience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  believe  that  the  campaign  has  been  very  effective,â&#x20AC;?  Obach  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;It  demon-­ strates  the  potential  to  use  the  web  for  ac-­ tivist  purposes.  I  donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  necessarily  agree  with  the  actions  that  the  group  is  calling  for,  but  their  use  of  this  medium  for  spreading  their  message  and  mobilizing  millions  of  people  is  truly  impressive.â&#x20AC;?

Have  you  been  feeling  tired  or  anxious  lately?

Sharon  Lococo,  former  psychol-­ ogy  student  at  SUNY  New  Paltz  and  license  mental  counselor,  hosted  the  ¿ UVW Âł/LYLQJ :HOO LQ ´ ZRUNVKRS on  April  9.  The  workshop  is  dedicated  to  controlling  anxiety  in  stressful  eco-­ nomic  and  social  times. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A  lot  of  people  have  seen  that  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  crazy  time  on  the  planet,  a  lot  of  peo-­ ple  have  anxiety,â&#x20AC;?  Lococo  said.  Her  workshop,  dedicated  to  bal-­ ance,  peacefulness  and  strength,  fo-­ FXVHV RQ OHDUQLQJ DERXW VFLHQWLÂż F indigenous  and  ancient  perspectives.  She  revealed  some  tips  for  all  to  learn.

thoughts  and  emotions,  including  a  20-­minute  meditation  technique. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This  meditation  technique  will  be  just  one  of  the  many  examples  on  how  people  can  anchor  themselves  in  clarity  and  emotionally,â&#x20AC;?  said  Lococo.

Lococo  said  she  encourages  stu-­ dents  to  attend  the  workshops. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  know  from  my  own  personal  experience,  I  was  stressed  once  I  left  college.  Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  bigger  impact  today  with  all  the  stress  going  on  globally.  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  hoping  to  offer  students  the  same  things  I  learned  through  meditating,â&#x20AC;?  she  said.

Lococo  said  she  hopes  to  help  individuals  in  their  own  personal  environments.  Lococo  said  her  workshop  is  in-­ spired  by  Professor  Herbert  Benson,  M.D.  from  Harvard  University  Medi-­

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  spent  the  better  part  of  this  semester  bat-­ ting  a  few  recipe  ideas  around...Rummermelon  (a  frosty,  rum-­soaked  treat)...penne  a  la  vodka  (my  old  specialty)...soylent-­green  quesadillas  (ÂĄEl  guacamole  es  GENTE!)...Putting  these  aside,  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  opted  for  gnocchi  in  a  spicy  marinara  sauce.  Ingredients:  28  oz.  canned  tomatoes.  Chopped  or  diced.  (I  recommend  Cento) 1.5  lb.  potato  gnocchi 2-­5  cloves  garlic,  minced %DVLO OHDYHV )UHVK LI \RX FDQ Âż QG LW Spices,  by  importance:  salt,  black  pepper,  red  pepper,  cumin,  cayenne Cheese:  parmesan,  asiago  or  a  vegan  substitute  if  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  into  that While  good  gnocchi  is  important,  good  sauce  is  critical.  Jarred  will  never  do.  So,  put  a  saucepan  on  medium  heat  with  a  hearty  drizzle  of  olive  oil,  then  the  garlic.  Hint:  go  by  scent.  If  you  smell  it,  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  ready  for  the  next  step.  Once  the  garlic  is  ready,  add  your  tomatoes.  Stir  and  let  it  simmer  on  medium  heat  for  some  20  min-­ utes  before  the  seasoning.  This  is  a  good  point  to  get  a  half-­full  pot  of  lightly  salted  water  boiling  for  the  gnocchi.  Keep  the  water  covered  and  start  adding  seasonings  to  your  taste.  Keep  stirring  it  and  take  frequent  tastes.  Be  generous  with  the  red  pepper.

When  the  water  boils,  pour  in  the  gnocchi.  They  should  rise,  but  once  they  feel  soft,  they  are  prob-­ ably  ready.  Then  drain  them  with  a  colander  and  pour  them  into  a  serving  bowl.  Ladle  in  as  much  sauce  as  you  are  comfortable  with.  Sprinkle  cheese  (or  cheese  substitute)  over  the  top  and  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  ready  to  serve.  Buon  appetito.  For  of-­agers:  Serve  it  with  a  hearty  Italian  red  wine.  Cabernet  Sauvignons  will  always  do  the  trick,  but  a  Chianti  or  Sangiovese  will  make  for  a  more  interesting  culinary  experience.

As  summer  approaches,  so  does  the  risk  of  being  kissed  by  the  sun  in  the  worst  possible  way.  Hannah  Spero,  a  second-­year  psychology  major,  lost  her  mother  to  melanoma  (the  deadliest  form  of  skin  cancer)  in  2001  and  has  been  holding  an  annual  fundraiser  in  her  honor  for  the  past  three  years.  When  Spero  came  to  New  Paltz,  she  started  a  club  on  campus  called  Save  Our  Skin  to  help  raise  awareness  about  the  disease.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  fundraiser  started  as  a  senior  project  in  high  school  and  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  been  holding  it  every  year  since  then,â&#x20AC;?  Spero  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;My  mom  was  an  artist  so  I  want  to  honor  her  PHPRU\ WKURXJK DUW 6WXGHQWV UDIĂ&#x20AC;HG RII WKHLU DUWZRUN WR raise  money.â&#x20AC;?  To  cater  to  different  students,  second-­year  psychol-­ ogy  major  Sharon  Hillman,  one  of  the  eventâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  planners,  asked  local  bands  to  play.  A  capella  groups  also  sang  and  local  restaurants  donated  food.  Even  though  the  event  was  planned  last  minute,  many  people  were  more  than  willing  to  help  out. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  felt  like  I  was  imposing  on  the  bands  a  little  for  ask-­ ing  them  to  play  on  such  short  notice  but  they  were  all  will-­

ing  to  help,â&#x20AC;?  Hillman  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;People  volunteered  themselves  to  come  play  because  they  saw  how  important  this  was.â&#x20AC;?

The  event,  held  on  Sunday,  April  22,  was  supposed  to  be  out  on  the  Quad.  However,  because  of  the  rain  it  was  moved  to  Student  Union  100.  Holding  the  event  on  the  Quad  where  students  tan  would  have  been  the  perfect  place  to  spread  awareness,  Hillman  said,  but  many  came  out  even  though  the  event  was  indoors.

Thinking Outside The Box FEMINIST COLLECTIVE PERFORMS ‘THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES’

The New Paltz Feminist Collective spread the word about women’s rights by hosting performances of “The Vagina Monologues” on Thursday, April 19 and Friday, April 20.

Performing “The Vagina Monologues” is an annual tradi-­ tion scheduled around V-­Day, a Valentine’s Day-­based holiday created by Eve Ensler, author of “The Vagina Monologues,” that lasts from February to April.

V-­Day celebrates and empowers women, spreading awareness about the violence against women that occurs worldwide, performers said.

“Performing ‘The Vagina Monologues’ is still relevant because there is still violence against women and a fear of women’s sexuality,” Gabrielle Lamake, a fourth-­year Wom-­ en’s Studies major and performer in “The Vagina Mono-­ logues,” said. “I think that the more women are comfortable

talking about sex, relationships, sexuality and violence against women, the more hopeful we can be to expect change to oc-­ cur.”

The tone of the monologues ranged from funny to sad, happy to heavy, illustrating the stereotypes and struggles women face. Although this was a performance, it was sup-­ posed to feel as natural as possible so the cast did not rehearse much, Liz Rubel, a fourth-­year sociology major and director of the production, said.

“We didn’t want it to look like these women were acting,” Rubel said. “It’s something more real than that. Of course this meant a lot of things were last minute, which put a lot of stress on me. At some points, I didn’t even know if it was going to happen. But everyone came together at the end and they were really passionate about it.”

The New Paltz Feminist Collective worked in conjunc-­ tion with Safe Homes of Orange County, a local, domestic vio-­ lence shelter. Ninety percent of all ticket sales and pre-­show

proceeds were donated to the organization, which helps pur-­ chase diapers, blankets and other materials for women in need.

The collective and Ensler have started preparing for next year’s V-­Day. A worldwide event called “One Billion Rising” is set to take place on Feb. 14, 2013. Ensler said the event will encourage women to stop their daily activities to celebrate themselves and what they stand for, and educate the world about violence against women. The name itself derives from a statistic that out of the three billion women alive worldwide, one billion are going to be victims of domestic violence.

Above all else, the New Paltz Feminist Collective hopes to spread awareness to audience members through their rendi-­ tion of “The Vagina Monologues,” Rubel said.

“Violence against women is something that happens on a daily basis, worldwide,” she said. “We also really want to em-­ power women and make them feel a lot less ashamed of their bodies, of saying the word ‘vagina’ and to feeling pressured to be what they think men want them to be.”

We  all  have  different  ways  of  energizing  ourselves  in  the  morn-­ ing.  Some  people  jog.  Some  people  drink  coffee.  Some  people  watch  YLROHQW KRUURU Âż OPV This  past  Saturday,  I  caught  a  10  a.m.  showing  of  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Cabin  in  the  Woods,â&#x20AC;?  and  I  learned  two  very  important  things.  First,  appar-­ ently  theaters  have  10  a.m.  showings.  Second,  starting  your  day  with  D KRUURU Âż OP ZKLOH QRW LGHDO LV DFWXDOO\ SUHWW\ DZHVRPH 7KH Âż OP just  has  to  be  as  original,  entertaining  and  frightening  as  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Cabin  in  the  Woods.â&#x20AC;?

Season 1, Episode 1 Attention  all  aspiring  writers  about  to  graduate:  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  screwed.  Well,  thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  not  really  news...itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  always  been  the  case.  But  +%2ÂśV QHZHVW 79 VKRZ Âł*LUOV ´ H[SORUHV WKH JRG DZIXO UHDOLW\ RI being  20-­something  and  surviving  in  a  terrible,  jobless  economy.  7KH SLORWÂśV Âż UVW VFHQH SURYLGHV WKH SDQLF WKDW Ă&#x20AC; RRGV WKURXJK out  the  rest  of  the  episode.  Two  years  out  of  college  and  living  in  New  York  City,  Hannah  (writer/director  Lena  Dunham)  is  abruptly  FXW RII Âż QDQFLDOO\ IURP KHU SDUHQWV 6KH WULHV WR VFURXQJH D MRE RXW of  her  one-­year-­old  internship  but  fails.  She  runs  to  her  boyfriend,  who  never  returns  her  text  messages,  for  the  most  awkward  and Â

uncomfortable  sex  scene  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll  ever  watch.  Her  friends  arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  much  help  either;Íž  theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  too  busy  with  their  own  messed  up,  troubled  lives.

Though  none  of  this  sounds  fun  to  watch,  the  show  is  brilliant.  Its  dark  humor  and  painful  truth  hit  just  the  right  spots.  It  makes  you  question  and  worry  about  your  own  bleak  future,  especially  when  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  possibly  thinking  of  moving  to  the  city  to  be  a  writer  (coughcoughdammitcough).  But  thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  still  something  just  so  hauntingly  perfect  about  the  way  Dunham  and  the  cast  go  about  their  shit  lives,  you  have  to  smile.  Dunhamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  vulnerability  is  vibrant  across  the  screen  and  as  a  real  25-­year-­old,  you  canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  help  but  realize  how  goddamn  lucky  VKH LV IRU PDNLQJ LW WR +%2 3URGXFHU -XGG $SDWRZÂśV GHÂż QLWHO\ D KHOS ² KH ZDV GUDZQ WR 'XQKDP DIWHU KHU IHDWXUH Âż OP Âł7LQ\ Furnitureâ&#x20AC;?  at  the  Sundance  Film  Festival.  The  coolest  thing  about  the  show  is  that  you  can  watch  it  on  YouTube  for  free.  I  guess  they  realized  most  20-­somethings  donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  have  HBO.  Although  it  is  fairly  depressing,  there  are  still  trickles  of  hope  throughout  the  show.  I  guess  hope  is  the  only  thing  there  is  these  days...or  winning  the  lottery. When  one  student  organization  began  pushing  for  gender-­neutral  housing  to  be  offered  at  SUNY  New  Paltz,  students  in  three  of  the  four  undergraduate  co-­ horts  were  still  in  high  school.  But  thanks  to  the  efforts  of  dedicated  student  leaders  over  the  years,  progress  has  been  actualized.  A  campus-­wide  email  recently  announced  that  three  suites  in  Bevier  and  Lefevre  Halls  will  be  con-­ verted  into  gender-­neutral  residences  come  fall  2012.  We  at  The  New  Paltz  Oracle  would  like  to  praise  the  students  who  worked  to  make  this  happen  and  the  FROOHJH RIÂż FLDOV ZKR XQGHUVWRRG WKH KLJK YDOXH ZH would  place  on  such  a  change.  We  feel  it  is  a  small  but  necessary  step  in  the  right  direction.  Past  Student  Association  (SA)  members  and  or-­ ganizations  associated  with  the  LGBTQ  community  KDYH FKDPSLRQHG WKLV FDXVH IRU \HDUV EXW RIÂż FLDOV DUH Âż QDOO\ WDNLQJ DFWLRQ 6$ ([HFXWLYH 9LFH 3UHVLGHQW (YH Stern  has  been  researching  gender-­neutral  housing  for  two  years  by  looking  at  other  SUNY  schools,  such  as  Purchase  and  Geneseo,  that  have  been  utilizing  this  in-­ novative  housing  and  also  spoke  to  alumni  from  the  LGBTQ  community.  With  the  help  of  Jacqueline  Andrews  from  Insti-­ tutional  Research  and  Ray  Schwarz  from  Student  Af-­ fairs,  a  survey  was  sent  out  to  the  entire  New  Paltz  campus  regarding  gender-­neutral  housing.  More  than  1,000  people  responded  and  over  900  people  answered Â

with  comments  about  why  people  thought  gender-­neu-­ tral  housing  was  important.

We  applaud  the  students  who  took  the  time  to  an-­ VZHU WKHVH TXHVWLRQV DQG H[SODLQ ZK\ WKH\ WKLQN WKHVH offerings  would  make  the  campus  a  better  place.  The  number  of  surveys  taken  and  the  lengths  the  respon-­ dents  went  to  answer  open  questions  apparently  played  a  roll  in  administratorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  decision  to  implement  these  offerings.  Our  voices  were  heard,  as  they  should  be.  Stern  should  also  be  commended  for  putting  the  survey  together  and  putting  her  research  into  a  pro-­ posal  to  be  presented  to  the  president  of  the  college.  Gender-­neutral  housing  options  would  not  be  allowed  without  such  a  formal  presentation,  and  a  professional  and  impressive  one  at  that.  Her  hard  work  paid  off,  and  we  as  a  student  body  should  be  grateful.  We  are  happy  that  as  a  campus  community,  it  seems  to  be  accepted  that  students  should  be  able  to  live  with  people  they  are  comfortable  living  with  regardless  of  gender.  The  offering  of  gender-­neutral  suites  is  a  baby  step  in  the  right  direction;Íž  however,  we  hope  students  DQG FROOHJH RIÂż FLDOV ZLOO FRQWLQXH WR IRFXV RQ WKLV LVVXH DQG H[SDQG RIIHULQJV DV QHFHVVDU\ One  of  the  biggest  reasons  for  gender-­neutral  hous-­ LQJ LV VDIHW\ 0DQ\ VWXGHQWV KDYH H[SUHVVHG FRQFHUQ that  they  do  not  feel  comfortable  using  bathrooms  that  are  divided  into  gender  binaries.  Others  fear  that  room-­ mates  may  not  accept  their  gender  identity.  Something Â

needed  to  change.  Changes  are  in  store  for  the  campus,  but  more  could  DOZD\V EH GRQH 7KH QHZ RIIHULQJV VWLOO FRQÂż QH PHQ WR live  with  men  and  women  to  live  with  women  in  the  same  room.  While  it  is  unclear  whether  or  not  state  or  SUNY  regulations  could  prevent  this  from  happening,  ZH ZRXOG KRSH WKDW 681< 1HZ 3DOW] RIÂż FLDOV ZRXOG consider  allowing  people  to  share  rooms  with  anyone  they  want  as  it  is  at  SUNY  Geneseo.  This  would  make  transgender  students  or  others  who  are  unsure  of  how  WR GHÂż QH WKHPVHOYHV PRUH FRPIRUWDEOH ZKHQ VLJQLQJ up  for  a  room.  Ultimately,  implementing  gender-­neutral  housing  should  make  students  feel  more  free  and  comfortable  while  living  on  campus.  We  hope  these  offerings  could  EH WKH Âż UVW RI PDQ\ WKDW FRXOG PDNH VWXGHQWV IHHO EHWWHU about  living  on  campus  at  SUNY  New  Paltz. Things  didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  start  looking  up  this  semester  until  my  German  professor  gave  me  a  fortune  cookie.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll  just  start  by  telling  all  of  you  how  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  having  a  really  bad  semester.  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  sure  there  are  a  ton  of  you  out  there  experiencing  this,  too;Íž  after  all,  they  say  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  usually  in  between  sophomore  and  junior  year  of  college  when  your  life  falls  apart.

Or  is  that  when  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  39  and  your  40th  birthday  is  the  next  day?

Well,  whatever   â&#x20AC;&#x201D;  back  on  track.  This  semester  has  sucked,  point  blank.  Every  story  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  done  for  my  one  journal-­ ism  class  has  had  one  or  multiple  things  go  wrong.  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  had  two  allergy  attacks  during  or  prior  to  my  German  class  and  DIWHU DQ HQWLUH VHPHVWHU ,ÂśP VWLOO WHUULÂż HG of  my  professor  (No,  really.  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d  rather  take  a  shot  of  my  own  pee  than  have  him  see  me  with  my  phone).  Every  class  has Â

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  been  a  lot  of  buzz  about  col-­ lege  majors  and  jobs  and  all  these  scary  real  world  things  lately.  Lists  are  being  printed  left  and  right  about  the  most  use-­ ful,  lucrative  or  promising  jobs.  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  seen  journalism  make  it  to  different  spots  on  various  lists  and  I  canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  lie  and  say  it  isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  striking.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  always  discouraging  to  see  some-­ thing  you  love  go  through  the  ringer,  es-­ pecially  if  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  something  you  anticipate  to  be  your  lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  work.  You  think  your  parents,  teachers,  uncles  and   friends  with  PRUH VSHFLDOL]HG Âż HOGV ZHUH ULJKW 0D\EH

given  me  some  sort  of  emotional  strife,  whether  it  be  work-­related  or  personal.

I  realized  I  had  to  turn  things  around  when  I  stressed  myself  out  so  much  I  ended  up  making  myself  sick,  which  resulted  in  my  sleeping  on  the  Oracle  couch  last  Wednesday  night.

The  passive  aggressive  emails  from  my  professor  concerning  how  I  missed  his  class  due  to  being  sick  helped  me  re-­ alize  that,  too.

In  order  to  try  and  make  things  bet-­ ter,  I  decided  I  should  go  to  Anja  Wieden,  my  German  professor  of  two  years  now,  and  ask  her  for  help  on  my  German  essay  (which  royally  sucks  at  the  moment).

Since  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  seen  each  other  every  VHPHVWHU WKDW ZHÂśYH EHHQ KHUH P\ Âż UVW VHPHVWHU ZDV KHU Âż UVW VHPHVWHU WHDFK ing  in  New  Paltz),  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  become  very  comfortable  with  one  another.  It  only  WRRN DERXW Âż YH PLQXWHV EHIRUH , WROG KHU everything  about  this  semester.

And,  naturally,  Anja  was  the  sweet,  wonderful  professor  she  is  and  told  me  it  was  going  to  be  OK.  I  mean,  she  is  the  reason  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  a  German  Studies  minor*.   Not  only  would  things  be  OK,  but  a  for-­

tune  cookie  would  cheer  me  up. Âł:KR NQRZV" 0D\EH WKH FKHHV\ thing  they  always  say  will  be  funny.â&#x20AC;?

It  wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  funny  though.  Actually,  it  ended  up  being  quite  relevant.

I  have  this  issue;Íž  I  affectionately  call  it  my  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Black  Swan  Complex,â&#x20AC;?  but  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  horrible,  horrible  thing.  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  hypercom-­ petitive  and  strive  to  be  perfect,  and  ba-­ sically  joke  about  wanting  to  be  a  24/7  wide-­awake  robot.

But  leave  it  to  a  fortune  cookie  to  make  me  realize  how  unhealthy  that  was.  Leave  it  to  a  fortune  cookie  to  say,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;One  of  the  best  things  to  do  sometimes  is  simply  to  be.â&#x20AC;?

Leave  it  to  a  fortune  cookie  to  slap  me  across  the  face  and  say,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cat,  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  not  a  gold-­painted  unicorn  at  the  circus  dancing  the  waltz  on  its  hind  legs  â&#x20AC;&#x201D;  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  human.â&#x20AC;?

And  I  know  all  you  little  Black  Swans  are  out  there,  too.  I  know  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  sitting  there  in  your  room  torturing  your-­ self  about  the  84  you  got  on  your  last  article  or  essay  (Ha,  what  are  those?).  Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  do  that.  It  really  isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  that  bad  of  a  grade.  If  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  really  bothering   you,  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m Â

sure  you  have  a  professor  who  can  help  remedy  that.  But  the  most  important  thing  to  re-­ member,  more  important  than  the  extra  credit  or  how  well  you  have  to  do  on  the  next  assignment,  is  that  these  bumps  in  the  road  wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  matter  later  on.  What  will  matter  is  your  sanity  and  your  content-­ ment  being  kept  intact.  What  matters  most  though,  is  realizing  your  life  is  get-­ ting  better,  and  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  growing  stronger  every  single  day.

And  maybe,  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll  come  back  to  re-­ ality  after  talking  with  your  German  pro-­ fessor  and  having  a  fortune  cookie.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  let  the  good  life  pass  you  by. *Actually  Anja  scared  me  into  doing  the  German  Studies  minor.  I  think  Anja  tried  to  do  this  thing  where  she  acted  VFDU\ IRU WKH Âż UVW FRXSOH RI ZHHNV WHDFK ing  us.  All  I  remember  is  wandering  aim-­ lessly  around  the  major  and  minors  fair  LQ WKRVH Âż UVW FRXSOH RI ZHHNV DQG KDYLQJ Anja  say  to  me  â&#x20AC;&#x153;CAT,  you  are  so  good  at  German.  Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  going  to  do  the  minor,  RIGHT?â&#x20AC;?  The  good  thing  is  I  love  it,  and  that  Anja  stopped  being  scary  after  week  four.

you  made  a  mistake.  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll  knock  the  wind  right  out  of  you.  I  started  off  in  college  as  a  philoso-­ phy  student.  As  youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d  expect,  the  track  is  not  one  without  ridicule.  I  couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  count  the  times  someone  asked  me  if  I  was  plan-­ ning  to  open  a  philosophy  store  or  pedal  my  philosophical  wares  door  to  door.*  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d  joke  back,  of  course  (I  maintain  you  canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  study  something  like  philosophy  without  a  sense  of  humor),  but  I  canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  say  I  didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  feel  a  bit  bitter  when  someone  openly  and  aggressively  belittled  something  that  I  loved  and  worked  hard  studying.

Because  of  that,  I  feel  like  it  needs  to  be  said:  there  is  merit  in  what  you  do.  The  more  I  work  inside  these  orange  Oracle  RI¿ FH ZDOOV DQG WKH PRUH , ZULWH and  interview  and  edit,  the  more  in  love  I  fall  with  this  lifestyle.  I  chose  to  be-­

come  a  journalist  because,  after  so  many  ORQJ QLJKWV ZRUNLQJ LQ WKLV RIÂż FH XQWLO , see  orange,  I  couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  imagine  not  doing  this.  And,  for  me,  whether  this  bit  of  ex-­ citement  and  satisfaction  with  my  work  SURYHV WR EH Âż QDQFLDOO\ IRUJLYLQJ RU QRW , think  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  enough.

It  seems  unfairly  hokey  to  say  that  your  happiness  trumps  the  very  real  struggles  of  bills,  loans  and  taxes,  but  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  one  of  those  sayings  that  is  only  clichĂŠd  and  overused  because  thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  bit  of  truth  to  it.  I  happen  to  believe  that  whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  writ-­ ten  on  the  very  expensive  piece  of  paper  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  all  working  for  is  exponentially  less  important  than  the  skills  and  talents  of  the  person  who  paid  for  it.  In  some  ways,  your  expensive  piece  of  paper  means  a  lot  â&#x20AC;&#x201D;  it  represents  so  much  of  your  hard Â

work  at  school  â&#x20AC;&#x201D;  but  in  others,  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  creat-­ LQJ WKLV IDOVH LGHD WKDW WKRVH ZRUGV GHÂż QH you.  *Brief  Interpolation:  I  feel  like  I  have  to  stick  up  for  my  former-­brethren  in  the  Philosophy  Department.  What  can  you  do  with  a  philosophy  degree?  Plenty.  Because  a  B.A.  is  not  (necessarily)  job  training,  a  person  with  a  philosophy  de-­ gree  is,  more  often  than  not,  a  well-­read,  well-­spoken  individual  who  can  write  and  reason  eloquently,  solve  problems  and  make  deals.  A  Philosophy  Department  (as  can  an  English,  journalism,  history  or  any  other  of  the  supposedly  â&#x20AC;&#x153;softerâ&#x20AC;?  studies)  can  churn  out  a  reasonable  and  versatile  member  of  the  work  force.  Your  degree  doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  determine  whether  you  are  wor-­ thy  or  unworthy.  Only  you  can  do  that.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  time  to  get  chizzied.â&#x20AC;?

Third-­year  psychology  major  Wes  Hoen  is  one  of  many  avid  rock  climbers  who  migrated  to  the  town  of  New  Paltz.  The  Shawangunk  Moun-­ tain  range,  also  known  as  the  Gunks,  is  located  close  to  the  town  and  is  a  notable  destination  for  rock  climbers.  The  spot  gives  both  top-­rope  climbers  and  boulder  climbers  hundreds  of  differ-­ ent  routes  to  explore.  He  said  after  having  birthday  parties  at  a  lo-­ cal  indoor  rock  gym  near  his  home  as  a  kid,  he  was  hooked  on  climbing.  Hoenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  career  as  a  seri-­ ous  climber  started  when  he  was  14,  after  getting  hired  at  the  gym  where  he  started.

Hoen  spent  hours  in  the  gym,  training  and  improving  his  skill  daily.  He  worked  there  for  eight  years  setting  climbing  routes  for  patrons.  Hoen  said  he  would  often  travel  with  friends  to  different  outdoor  climbing  locations,  including  the  Gunks.  After  an  unpleasant  experience  during  his  time  at  SUNY  Potsdam,  Hoen  said  he  returned  home  to  attend  a  community  college  near  Albany.  He  said  he  got  his  grades  up  and  worked  toward Â

his  dream  school,  SUNY  New  Paltz.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  love  it  here,  man,â&#x20AC;?  he  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  Trapps  and  Carriage  Road  and  Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  Kill  are  all  just  under  20  minutes  from  my  house.  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  amazing.â&#x20AC;?

In  the  midst  of  their  non-­traditional  spring  season,  SUNY  New  Paltzâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  Men  and  Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  Cross  Country  teams  have  been  training  to  en-­ sure  success  come  the  2012  fall  season.

With  an  overall  18-­week  limit  for  yearly  training  â&#x20AC;&#x201D;  mandated  by  the  NCAA  â&#x20AC;&#x201D;  the  cross  country  teams  break  their  schedules  up  into  the  fall  and  spring.  Their  traditional  fall  season  entails  a  12-­week  long  schedule,  whereas  the  non-­traditional  spring  consists  of  a  total  of  six  weeks. :LWK QR RIÂżFLDO SUDFWLFH UHJLPHQW RYHU winter  break,  Head  Coach  Michael  Trunkes  said  runners  are  encouraged  to  keep  training  on  their  own  time  and  maintain  motivation  despite  the  huge  blocks  of  unscheduled  time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  spring  can  be  a  hit  or  a  miss,â&#x20AC;?  Trunk-­ es  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  generally  less  intense  because  we  arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  in  varsity  mode.  But  we  still  train  hard  in  the  spring  so  we  can  be  competitive  in  the  fall.â&#x20AC;?

The  purpose  of  the  spring  season,  he  said,  is  to  invoke  self-­improvement  within  each  runner.  The  team  typically  works  together  as  a  whole, Â

with  group  workouts  and  practices.  However,  the  spring  gives  each  member  a  chance  to  step  back  and  â&#x20AC;&#x153;focus  on  the  individual,â&#x20AC;?  Trunkes  said.

Without  the  added  pressure  of  performing  solely  to  score  points,  this  spring  turned  out  to  be  particularly  rewarding  for  the  runners,  he  said.

After  a  childhood  desire  grew  into  a  life-­long  love,  third-­year  Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  Basket-­ ball  Captain  Matt  Devine  is  seeing  his  hard  work  and  determination  pay  off.

On  April  7,  Devine  was  named  to  the  d3hoops.com  All-­Star  team,  which  will  travel  to  Europe  in  late  May  to  compete  against  opponents  in  Paris,  Amsterdam  and  the  Netherlands.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  am  honored  to  have  been  select-­ ed,  and  I  cannot  wait  to  get  the  ball  go-­ ing,â&#x20AC;?  Devine  said.  This  season,  Devine  led  the  SU-­ NYAC  in  points  per  game  and  was  nominated  to  the  second  All-­SUNYAC  team.  After  his  play  dur-­ ing  the  season,   Head  Coach  Mike  Rejniak  made  the  rec-­ ommendation  for  Devine  to  be  selected  to  the  d3hoops. com  team.  IKE EJNIAK â&#x20AC;&#x153;He  can  post-­up,  shoot  the  three  and  has  the  right  mentality.  Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  one  tough  son  of  a  gun,â&#x20AC;?  Rejniak  said.

'HYLQH Âż UVW VDZ VXFFHVV SOD\LQJ for  his  high  school  team  at  Freehold  Township  in  New  Jersey.  After  having  a  solid  season  as  a  senior,  former  Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  Basketball  head  coach  at  the  time,  Da-­ gan  Nelson,  recruited  him  to  play  for  his  Div.  III  team.  7KRXJK KH ZDV QRW \HW DIÂż OLDWHG with  New  Paltz,  Rejniak  said  Devine  was  recruited  because  of  his  strength  as  a  team  player.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Matt  was  very  versatile.  He  played  in  the  Jersey  Shore  area,  and  was  re-­ cruited  by  a  lot  of  colleges  including  Pennsylvania  and  Hopart  which  went  LQWR WKH 1&$$ Âż QDOV LQ ´ 5HMQLDN said.  Devine  said  once  he  visited  New  Paltz  as  a  potential  recruit,  he  knew  a  match  had  been  made  and  he  was  not  going  anywhere  else.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;When  I  came  for  my  overnight  weekend  with  the  team  as  a  recruit, Â

I  knew  this  was  the  school  for  me,â&#x20AC;?  Devine  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;They  made  me  feel  like  I  was  already  a  part  of  the  team,  and  they  were  really  likeable.â&#x20AC;?

Devine  will  be  joined  by  10  other  NCAA  Div.  III  players  who,  like  him-­ self,  were  recommended  by  their  respec-­ tive  coaches.  The  squad  will  play  four  RU Âż YH JDPHV DJDLQVW WKHLU (XURSHDQ rivals,  and  will  also  participate  in  a  se-­ ries  of  youth  clinics  and  workouts  with  professionals.  Devine  said  one  of  the  greatest  perks  of  the  tour  is  being  able  to  show  off  his  talent  to  European  scouts,  who  may  be  interested  in  his  play  dur-­ ing  the  trip.  He  said  this  is  crucial  as  he  hopes  to  play  b a s k e t b a l l  overseas  once  KH Âż QLVKHV KLV college  ca-­ reer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  just  going  to  play  my  game,  and  show  the  scouts  a  little  something,â&#x20AC;?  Devine  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;If  I  get  recruited  to  play  in  Europe  after  I  graduate,  that  would  be  awesome.â&#x20AC;?

While  this  is  a  big  step,  Devine  said  he  is  ready  for  the  opportunity  to  take  his  game  to  the  next  level.  He  said  the  journey  he  has  taken  alongside  his  team-­ mates  has  prepared  him  well  for  what  he  is  about  to  embark  on.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;My  teammates  support  me  100  percent.  Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  excited  for  me,  and  I  just  wish  I  could  experience  and  share  it  with  them,â&#x20AC;?  Devine  said.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;It  was  an  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;usâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  that  got  me  where  I  am  and  where  I  am  about  to  go.â&#x20AC;?

Once  news  broke  that  former  Mets  shortstop  Jose  Reyes  was  indeed  leaving  Flushing,  my  thoughts  au-­ tomatically  went  to  my  younger  brother.  Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  big  age  disparity  between  the  two  of  us;Íž  while  I  grew  up  with  players  like  Todd  Hundley  and  Mike  Piazza,  he  grew  up  with  Reyes  and  David  Wright.  Sure,  heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  ZDWFKHG EDVHEDOO VLQFH KH Âż UVW FDPH RXW RI WKH ZRPE EXW 5H\HV ZDV WKH Âż UVW SOD\HU P\ EURWKHU XQGHUVWRRG grew  up  and  fell  in  love  with.

I  wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  surprised  when  my  Dad  told  me  there  were  tears  and  alone  time  needed  on  my  younger  brotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  part.  After  all,  this  was  one  of  the  many  athletes  who  took  up  space  on  his  bedroom  walls.  Believe  me  when  I  say  not  just  anyone  makes  it  onto  his  bedroom  walls.  And  maybe  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  stories  like  that  which  made  the  Mets  franchise  think  it  was  a  good  idea  to  have  a  Reyes  tribute  on  Tuesday.  Oops.

However,  that  isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  the  most  egregious  issue  at  bat  here.  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  pretty  shameful  for  Mets  fans  to  boo  Reyesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  return. Â

No  Reyes  Of  Light  At  Citi  Look,  having  to  say  goodbye  to  an  immensely  tal-­ ented  player  who  grew  up  in  the  system  hurts  and  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  understandable  people  would  be  crushed  seeing  him  come  back  in  a  different  (and  super  ugly)  uniform.  Yes,  he  left  for  a  better  contract  and  a  division  rival  in  the  Marlins,  and  it  stinks,  but  he  was  one  of  the  best  play-­ ers  to  play  for  the  franchise.  He  never  reached  his  full  potential  as  a  Met,  but  he  did  produce  some  great  mo-­ ments  with  the  club.  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  also  not  as  if  Reyes  hated  New  York  and  was  counting  down  the  days  until  he  left.  Honestly,  I  do  believe  Reyes  would  have  stayed  with  the  Mets  if  the  contract  had  been  there.  But  in  the  end,  Sandy  Alder-­ son  wanted  to  rebuild  more  than  he  wanted  to  keep  Reyes.  The  Mets  are  in  transition,  but  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  always  been  pretty  clear  Wright  would  be  the  poster  boy  for  years  to  come.  Even  Reyes  admitted  that  Wright  is  the  â&#x20AC;&#x153;face  of  the  franchise.â&#x20AC;?

It  sounds  heartless  (the  game  is  Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  past  time  after  all),  but  baseball  is  a  business,  and  more  so  a  business  than  any  other  sport.  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  been  that  way  for  a  very,  very  long  time.  Reyes  leaving  for  the  Marlins  was Â

strictly  business,  and  it  isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  different  than  what  most  other  major  leaguers  go  through.  While  dedicating  a  night  to  him  wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  the  best  idea  on  the  Metsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  part,  fans  should  have  conducted  themselves  better.  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  sure  that  for  a  good  number  of  them,  it  wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  like  Reyes  was  their  childhood  hero  growing  up,  and  even  then  it  wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  have  been  okay  to  boo  him.  However,  calling  him  â&#x20AC;&#x153;trashâ&#x20AC;?  is  not  alright.  He  was  never,  and  never  will  be,  trash  to  this  baseball  club.  During  the  video  tribute  for  Reyes,  fans  should  have  either  sat  down  and  said  nothing  or  at  least  ap-­ plauded  out  of  respect  for  someone  who  served  as  a  beacon  of  hope  for  nearly  a  decade,  because  he  was.  Before  everthing  went  down  the  drain  and  all  sorts  of  speculation  that  the  Mets  could  win  a  World  Series  went  to  dust,  Reyes  and  Wright  were  the  ones  who  ev-­ HU\RQH ORRNHG WR Âż UVW There  didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  need  to  be  whistles  or  ovations  or  screams;Íž  Reyes  did  have  his  lazy  moments  as  a  Met  afterall.  However,  there  shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  have  been  jeers.  Un-­ fortunately  there  were.   PHOTO  BY  ROBIN  WEINSTEIN
