The Holden Junior Cattlemen Society held its 8th annual show on June 18.

There were a total of 25 participants who ranged in age between six and 21 years of age. The participants competed in grooming and showmanship as we as confirmation classes throughout the day. About half of the participants were from Beaver and Flagstaff counties, with a few participants coming from Thorsby, Bittern Lake and Elk Point.

Society President Lucy Upham said everything went very well. “Participants looked like they were enjoying themselves and parents looked like they also go to have some fun, which is exactly what we want.

I’m excited for our year end meeting to discuss everybody’s thoughts and to start planning next year’s show already!

Upham said the show has grown immensely over the past eight years, and said switching from a two day show to a one day show has been a huge change, but one that has the approval of participants and volunteers alike.

“The Main reason the cattle show was created was to help promote Holden as a village to come to. We wanted show off what this small village was truly worth. Being as Holden is a very agricultural based area the thought of a junior cattle show would be a great idea. The Holden 4-H beef club has been prosperous for several decades now, so why not try a cattle show that brings people in from all over the province.

I just hope that The Holden cattle show becomes one of the ‘IT’ shows for people from all over the province to come and show off their amazing animals. I hope when people think of Holden they think of how fun the atmosphere is and enjoy themselves as much as possible. If we ever got big enough, I would definitely turn our show into a two day event once again to accommodate also!”

Upham said the event would not be possible without the support of local volunteers, organizations, businesses and judges. She also wanted to recognize the Holden Agricultural Society for use of the facility and the “tireless energy” of its board of directors to make the show a success.
