Vegreville town council officially proclaimed June 12-18 as Pride Week in the community.

Council supported painting of a main street intersection crosswalk to match the Pride Flag, shared posts on the Town’s social media channels as well as flew the Pride flag at the east and west entrances of town.

Community Services Director Phil Rowe stated, “By raising the Pride Flag and painting the main street crosswalk in celebration of Pride Week, the Town of Vegreville shows recognition of the LGBTQ2S+ members in our community.”

Litania Sankey, Community Programmer with Vegreville & District FCSS, said the crosswalk project began last year when the initial Pride Committee laid the foundation to start Vegreville’s first Pride Week.

“The Pride Committee started planning for Pride Week in the beginning of April. The committee consists of FCSS, Kalyna Family Resource Network- Vegreville & Area, Mental Health Capacity Building, Vegreville & District Chamber of Commerce and Veg Al Drug Society.”

Committee members as well as 10 youth participated in the crosswalk project. Sankey said, “The crosswalk painting was selected as one of the Pride Committee’s goals to show a visual representation of support and inclusion for the LGBTQ2S+ community.”
