The Village of Ryley hosted a Mini Sports Day on June 19.

Village of Ryley Officer Manager Angel Matyachuk said they couldn’t break with tradition altogether and held the special event for community members.

“This year we held a Mini Sports Day as we were unsure what COVID-19 had in store for us,” explained Matyachuk.

“The residents and visitors we had over the weekend really enjoyed getting out and taking advantage of the day with family, friends, and neighbours all the while following the COVID-19 restrictions. The Good News Community Church members put together carnival and family games as well as invited event goers to join in on a family baseball and basketball game which had a wonderful turn out!

It was fantastic to see the community together again! We had Kumson Electrical sell snow cones and was one of our scavenger hunt locations. The scavenger hunt was hosted by the village and it was exciting to see hunters wandering through the village looking for clues.”

The Ryley Fire Department kicked off the event with a mini parade complete with sirens and lights. Matyachuk was so appreciative of their efforts, and said that even though it was small, “it warms your heart to see that kind of community spirit.”

She went on to say, “This Mini Sports Day wouldn’t have been what it was if it wasn’t for the community members that took the time to put this together. Ryley has a big heart and when it comes to community spirit, and they kick it out of the park every time!

Normally, they host a three-day Sports Day. Matyachuk said village staff, museum members, and volunteers are currently working on plans for this, and tentatively, Sept. 17-19 has been slated for the full-scale event.

Matyachuk said live music, theatre, entertainment, sports games, and family activities are in the works. She is hoping for a good turn out for that event as well.
