CATHERINE RAPHAELA LENG 凌慧婷

Looking back at the past years’ study as an interior design student, it takes more than just a commitment to stay in this industry. The needs to put in effort and to be sensitive towards surrounding

during past four years degree study has triggered a different mindset of mine. I’ve started to see interior design as a lifetime journey, where explorations, creations and implementations come together as

one. My name is Catherine, a Malaysian who came from a small

town in the east of Malaysia - Miri. After 3 years of working experiences in an accounting firm, I then realised my biggest dream is to become an interior designer. I took an undergraduate course in interior design studies (B.A. Hons. Interior Design) at Chung Yuan Christian University, Taiwan. First year was definitely a struggle year for a new Interior Design student, yet throughout the tough process I’ve started to understand more on how this course works.

Willingness to put in more passion and effort comes together with a clearer career path. This brought me success on consistent improvement in my academic study. Design studios in CYCU are integrated with different skills and architectural knowledge from other courses, this is to ensure students

understand how to apply logic building construction method into their design. Exposed to logical way to design in an early study definitely is an advantage for me. I believe interior design is a unique course that needs persistence exposure towards new environments and cultures. Experiences are important for individual to strengthen design sense. I’m looking forward to gain more experience, to learn more about design in a firm whom wholeheartedly passionate about

design, to be able to commit to a real design project, to learn about every important procedures & aspects of design world. Not just drawing but only applying design in real life. I was once told by my mentor that design is about solving problem in human’s living, yet with creative ways. As a future interior

designer I would very much like to work with other creative people around the globe, either now or in the future.

Tusan

/FINAL THESIS 畢業設計 /CATERGORY: LONGHOUSE CULTURE 長屋文化 /TYPE: NEW COMMERCIAL MODEL 新商業模式

/CONCEPT: The intention of our design was to create a space for vendors and tourists in Tusan and not to overburden the environment.

Apart from reducing development costs, it will also help to reduce the waste caused by the palm industry and ease the burden of these vendors so that they will be willing to stay and maintain this place. We believe that the local attitude helps the best to develop the characteristics of Tusan. This community was established because of people. And because of human behavior it creates a different spatial structure. The design of a single cabin emphasizes on the adaptability of it to various programs and usages. Every cabin was linked to the public walkway which we called TANJU and created a semi-private area which we called RUAI, RUAI was meant to be used by the people as dining space or meetup area. Alternatively it can be transformed into a night kitchen for the

people who stays at the hostel cabin. When the cabins are placed together in a sizeable number, they forms flexible semi-public space, hence become a well-connected space for

the people. This openness allows a sharing communal experience – “kongsi” spirit to take place, informal activities such as sharing good meal, movie screening are possible in

such community. /PLEASE REFER TO FINAL THESIS LINK FOR COMPLETE

/CATERGORY: FLORA & FAUNA /TYPE: PRODUCTS CONCEPT – CATS LIVING

/CONCEPT: The living environment of human compressed day by day, the single family are getting harder to afford a bigger house. The

lack of ground space in the house become an issue for the owner to have pets, this is why cats became popular. As a small feline, the ancestors of cats love to live alone, the required territory is also much smaller than the dog. The main idea of our design is to develop an easier way of living for both the owners & cats, it focused on the space development of the wall/partition. The cat is the master of jumping, even in a narrow space, up & down, feeling comfortable. A wild cat’s territory is about 1 to 3 square kilometres. For the cat, staying in house is the ideal life. Cats are the most independent pets ever, however there are still a lot of issues to be resolved.

Cats love narrow spaces, their flexible spines allow them to squeeze themselves into confined spaces. So, it's no big deal for them to cram their furry bodies into a small basket or shoe box.
