VPAPD withdraws support for Real Vol.XXXII Issue No. 14

“I am withdrawing my support to Dr. Don Vicente Real.” Thus was the opening statement of Vice President for Administration, Planning and Development Peter Dayot on a press conference held at the Perpetual Help Credit Cooperative Incorporated [PHCCI], San Jose Extension, Dumaguete City on August 25. The VPAPD shared two issues that led him to withdraw his support which include (1) the obstruction of Negros Oriental State University Federated Faculty Association (NORSUFFA) President and Board Regent Roche Cabanlit from entering the campus and (2) the statements of Congressman Pryde Teves on local television regarding the deliberation of the 2015 NORSU budget. Dayot who fronted the event said that the mismanagement in NORSU compelled him to make his decision. “I can no longer afford to close my eyes,” he disclosed. He explained that he cannot allow the present administration

N e g ros O rien ta l State University BayawanSta. Catalina Campus—College of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery (NORSU BSC-CAFF) instructor Fenona Pinky Gabuan filed two harassment complaints against the University President Don Vicente Real. The first complaint filed on October 30, 2013 was the alleged abuse of authority by deloading

of teacher assignment, conduct of unbecoming official by denying the access to have a copy of the alleged verified complaints, violation against women by attempting to break a coffee mug on Gabuan’s face, and oral defamation by shouting “Dakong bakakon ka!”, with a loud voice and within hearing distance of everyone who were present on the place of the FACULTY FILES .. to page 6

Real answers issues NORSUFFA prexy banned in An outburst of sentiments By John Dave V. Laturnas and Francis Ivan Ho “NORSU will never close…It never will!” said Negros Oriental State University President Dr. Don Vicente C. Real during the press conference held at the university president’s office on August 29. The university president addressed, “I am sad with the continuous discussion of university issues and problems which should have been settled here inside the campus,” relating the symposia held inside and outside the university by ‘the other group’ pertaining to Cabanlit’s press gathering inside the university and Dayot’s revelation in PHCCI. Real expressed, “I have always emphasized, on day one of my assumption of office that the door of my office is open for everybody… for dialogue, for conversation or whatever issues and problems that may arise affecting the stakeholders of the university,” implying to the press that issues could have been settled harmoniously and shouldn’t had been brought to such degree.

On issues about procurement without BOR approval Series of interrogations were made by the media men. During the conference, they asked the university president about its alleged multimillion project procurements which did not undergo Board of Regents (BOR) approval. Thus was also revealed to the public by Cong. Teves in a media interview. In answer to this, the university president explained he is just following the system of the previous university president Dr. Henry A. Sojor which is according to him, is lawful. Real furthered, “The projects are defensible… Long ago, projects are implemented, they don’t have APP nor BOR approval but they are still implemented. In an Executive Order No. 68, Series of 2014 issued by University President Don Vicente C. Real last August 15, current NORSUFFA President Roche Cabanlit is temporarily banned to enter the NORSU premises while on preventive suspension. As Cabanlit was about to enter NORSU Main Campus I on August 18, he was blocked by University Security Management Office Head Benjamin Valencia. According to Valencia, Human Resource Management Office Director Jim Villahermosa ordered him to do so. In an interview with TN, Valencia said the USMO was just following the order referring to the executive order of the university president. “Upon barring him [Cabanlit], I didn’t harass him. I gave manly treatment as I explained to him about the order,” Valencia said. He added that Cabanlit did not insist to get inside because, according to him, Cabanlit

understood that they [USMO] were just following the order. Sought for his side, Villahermosa said the said executive order was in pursuance with the previous Executive Order No. 49 dated June 20 with the subject “Preventive Suspension of Roche L. Cabanlit” due to his alleged serious dishonesty claiming that he attained two master’s degrees as exposed by an anonymous complainant. Cabanlit admitted that due to such order, his classes will surely be affected. However, when he was blocked, he claimed there was no document or any executive order that was presented to him to prove his prohibition from entering the premises of the university. For a better future Every Filipino desires to experience college life. But the fact that our country faces widespread poverty nowadays, justifies that only a little portion of the Philippine’s population can experience tertiary education. Just recently, a new movement was initiated by the House of the Senate, spearheaded by Senator Allan Cayetano proposing a Senate Bill No. 2275 otherwise known as the Iskolar ng Bayan bill which is an act that expands access to education in tertiary levels of education. As the bill prescribed, it mandates all the State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the country to give automatic admission and full scholarship grants to the top ten public high school students of respective graduating classes. Looking into the context of the said bill, it seems that Cayetano’s purpose is desirable and beneficial. If the bill will be laid for enactment, there are several advantages we could perhaps anticipate and consider. First is the extension of the current scholarship scheme of all SUCs that offers only full scholarships to the graduated valedictorian of high school. According to the articulations of Senator Cayetano, the proposed law will set a leap of hope to the ten outstanding graduates of 7,913 public high schools in the country. That is equivalent to a total of 79,130 Filipino families who will have a chance to wake up someday with better future. Moreover, it will also strengthen and improve the poor support of the government to education which is clearly different from the foreign states. Thus, will result to the attenuation of uneducated Filipinos and provision of opportunities most especially to deserving intellectually-capable youths. Now, do you think there is still a reason for the bill not to pass? Obviously, there is none if we are going to ponder the aspect of its purposes. Hence, if such bill will be approved, we can say that the government has really made a great move to initially resolve the dilemma on illiteracy and ignorance currently battled by our country. Nevertheless, the only thing we wished as responsible citizens is the acceptance of such law and that there will be no pocketing of funds just as what happened to the previous political issues. Since the law is enticing, we cannot deny the circumstances that some government officials become more aggressive when it talks about money matters. We just hoped that all the people involved will arrive at only one conclusion that “Education is a right of every citizen for them and for the Philippines to achieve better future”.

Scary reality Poor little fella I am ‘coz to tell you honestly, I had never gone into any educational field trips. Longing for such experience, I’d always dreamt to go to historical places like museums, parks, old churches, including of course…those amazing tourist spots in our county. I must admit that it requires a huge amount of money. But I believe it seldom takes place in a student’s life wherein we would be given the chance to widen our perspectives, appreciate and learn out of the amazing experience. I think that this feeling I have right now is most likely similar to yours my fellow students. We always wanted to go into adventure. We always wanted to somehow escape from the anchoring pressures of our studies. But how do we really view field trips after the recently reported tragedy that had ended the lives of some students of Bulacan State University (BSU)? Just last August 19, seven out of 180 BSU students drowned after being swept away while crossing a river on their way to Madlum Cave in San Miguel, v

A challenge or a threat? “Ako ni i-promise ninyo [NORSU admin], kung dili gani ma-resolve ang isyu sa NORSU karon, dili nako ipadeliberate ang budget sa NORSU next year…kung dili nila na solbaron, walay budget ang NORSU next year.” The statement was directly quoted from the mouth of Congressman Pryde Henry Teves during his live interview aired on televisions and was posted on Youtube. Such statement caused buzzes and feedbacks from all—including this column’s opinions and of its possible catastrophic outcomes. Now let’s face it! If such challenge, or should I say threat will be permitted or will overrule anything, expect for something worse to come. Here, if we don’t have anything to spend with as stakeholders of this university, everything will fall in a domino effect. Let’s start with the smallest things. If we can’t have next year’s budget, then expect to study in a ‘hell-like’ institution, with pure heat and drought. Yes! If we can’t do something, then we might as well find it hard to pay the university’s expenses—electricity, water and the likes. I’m sure that’d be another hassle

Bulacan. Based on a Facebook post, the university said that the tragedy happened as the victims who are freshmen BS Tourism students under the College of Home Economics went an experiential field trip in the said area. Two survivors and two fatalities were recovered on the same day of the accident, while the remains of another two were recovered on the following day. The body of the seventh victim then who was identified as a former member of the “EB Babes” of GMA-7’s noon-time show Eat Bulaga, was recovered by Thursday. According to reports, students planned to hike at Mt. Manalmom, however, they were advised not to go on because of the flood spawned by the downpour. Truly, it was a tragedy for BSU especially for the families of those victims. In fact, the incident threatened most of the authorities which led into recommendation to suspend all field trips throughout the country. With this, most students reacted and are dismayed, including me ‘coz it gives me false hope to experience field trip in my college life. Yet I believe the authorities should not make the BSU case as the only basis for the suspension of field trips. It could be that the BSU lack proper preparation and that the students were not appropriately guided by their chaperons or supervisors. More so, we all know that the said incident is in accordance to the will of the One above. We have no right to question Him. He has set His plans for us and He holds our fate. Death is unpredictable, as they say. So as much as possible, let us treasure every single moment of our lives. Live life to the fullest for we do not know when will He take it away from us. It could be next year, next month, next week, tomorrow or later. Perhaps, after you read this article. Scary but we must accept the reality. Please help us pray for the souls of the victims of the BSU tragedy. May all of them rest in peace. for us as students of this already scandalous university. We will be given options when it comes to celebrations— organize one spending nothing, or stay still and do nothing at all. Another thing, we can’t pay those who’ll clean the physical mess of this institution, so expect to clean those by ourselves. Also take note that salaries for our instructors are allocated from that said budget. Woah! That’s tough for them. And hell for us. Who will be teaching us ‘all those good things’ if they themselves aren’t receiving anything? Who will waste their time for us if they themselves can’t feed their families? And lastly, who will be there ‘to guide us’ if they themselves can’t look for the light path? We just can’t teach and educate our own without their ‘professionalism’. Scary isn’t it? But just of remind you of the possibilities. And in the worst case scenario. Well, it has to be something interesting and wild. It could be funny but everyone but be doing movements and rallies if this university’s issues will never be resolved. We could as expect to hear and witness such rallies with faculty members and staff of the institution. I just could not tell if those who are in the other will be part of such. That will be the time of unity by all I could say. This means that everything will just stop in an instant. Like we will be nothing but poor little chicks in a deserted place. Well, that will really make us more famous. Now, if these scandals will never end, I’m quite sure everyone will be of great dilemma with fear. If none will make a move, compromise perhaps, then we could as well prepare to fly and fade away, struggling to make it to the other side. Finally, if those on the right positions cannot settle everything in the earliest possible time, then we could expect for the worst things to come. So fellas, I suggest you to take and put your seatbelts on, held it tightly, and be ready for more thrilling adventures to come. I am very open to comments and suggestions. I usually bump with people who, in one way or another, suit my needs or somehow irritate my social being. And to think of those creatures? I just can’t stand it. When I was younger, I seldom have the feelings of too much anger or fury to someone. Maybe because I believed that people are to understand each other. I was used to meeting and knowing people, whatever orientation they might belong into, because I thought that I can be part of them. But I was wrong! I was so darn wrong! That was on the mid-August when our group went into this wild place, only for us. That was private. In fact, I thought that the place was a perfect spot for people like us. We chatted for a while and went high with what we drunk. Then we decided to end our night with merrymaking—in that same dark and wild place. What would you expect? We did not just slept. That did not just end there because there was something far more than I had imagined myself. I have done the vile thing that I never imagined doing in my age. I did that thing that until now I neglected. That night, I was dared to do the thing that two people of opposite sex do. Yes, I did that. But we did not go beyond the bar. I mean, we ended on the almost hard part, I guess. I don’t know why I did such or accepted the challenge. Maybe because my subconscious mind was not functioning well at that time. Or because I was high. But I still did that! Fine. Perhaps, they kept what happened there as a secret. But they did not. At first, I thought everything was okay. That they will just forget what had happened. That we would start another chapter of our friendship. Yes, they were treating me normally. But other people mistreated me. They seemed to be so far away. So cold. Like I was someone with the most immoral personality. Then I realized that my “friends” are already laughing at me when I see them. Sometimes, they would even make fond of me in front of many. “Kulang na lang ato kay video ninyong duha girl,” one of them said. Then my tire started losing its air, making me unable to move forward. I swallowed everything. From the shame, the disappointed of my closest friends who thought that I was this clean woman, and traitors who did this to me. I was used. Worse? The man who did the same thing to me was proud enough to tell everyone that he was masculine enough to belittle me. And all of my closest friend who were there when my needs were starting to go in a distance that I can’t fathom. The issue even made me famous on our whole group. Woah! They had gone far enough. They had gone beyond bars. But what could I do? They were many and I am isolated. They are throwing everything at me and I can only stare them blankly in their eyes. I was lost that I thought of ending up my already messed up life. Good thing, there were still those people who are prepared to be comforters in my depressing times. And guess what, they were those people who unconsciously shows they care and are those whom I just neglected. They were those people whom I thought would never be my companion. But I was wrong, because they were those who cleansed me from the dirt that is killing me inside. They were those who lend a hand and carry me, helping me stand amidst the storm. They were those who encouraged me to go on and fight with all my might. They were those who fought with me in the middle of my battle against the people whom I thought might make me belong. They were those who made realize that I don’t have be with those people who make me happy or wild, or to those people who speak of the most precious words that later on be vile. And finally, there were those people who made me think that my obstacle is just one of life’s hurdles to go through. Now, I am staying close to them but I could still have the thinking of letting go, of isolating myself. Because I am afraid to be hurt again. I am afraid to be used and be fooled again.

From that advent of someone as exultant and exuberant, you would never foresee that in an instant, you already witnessed that person hangs himself in the chains of death. Bombardment and devastations, these sentiments has never been unquestionably true when you have been an eyewitness of an extreme outrageous status quo. The bombardment of truth that suppresses every individual’s surrealism magnifies every single act of missteps which often leads to great melancholic instances. These epochs triggers our mindset to be irrational and absurd and that is where thoughts of doing idiocy starts. The silent killer When the feeling of emptiness and despair spoils your profound minds, everything could just go haywire. You could barely think of something veracious that all you are acquainted with are just jam-packed with negativities! Relationships and careers would be in such risk if this would never be eradicated. Who would not recognize the voice of Genie in the bottle or Popeye? Or President Theodore Roosevelt in ‘The night at the Museum?’Oh! And Dr. Know of Artificial Intelligence. Yes, that was Robin Williams, the famous Hollywood comedian actor. Sad to say, he had just ended his life with an unforeseen suicidal death. Such has been suspected to be caused by the so called “silent killer”—depression! This strikes to anyone under the blues. In his case, a mental illness that subsidized his depression has lead to his final destination. The official cause of his death was Asphyxia (the inability to acquire sufficient oxygen through breathing for an extended period). He was also articulated to have put himself in rehab due to a severe depression that he was battling all throughout, not to mention that he is suffering from Parkinson’s disease. And just this August 10, 2014 around 10 pm, he was found dead. He dangled himself by wrapping a belt around his neck. His body was also examined and that superficial cuts were discovered on his left wrist. A pocket knife was also found nearby the place of the suicide. As you baffle around the unanticipated reality of Robin William’s death, you could never envision, someone as robust and enthusiastic would also sort out something immoral towards himself. It’s just inhumane! Doing such agonizing acts made his supporters be in great loss and melancholy. And by the way, studies show that the more funny or comedic a person is, the more vulnerable that individual is to depression. Sad to say, Robin Williams was one of them. So be alert upon your funny friends. They might already be hiding something inside! The stimulators and unprecedented upshot As a human being, it is never conclusive to be in such dejections. Typically, you would assert that depressions are accumulating when there are feelings of vulnerability and desperateness. A dreary outlook would never improve situations. If you feel depressed, you would reject recreational activities and you will lose the feeling of joy and desire, loss of appetite and the

involvement of insomnia recurrences. Seriously, who would not be irritated with these things? Guilt? Worthlessness? These two ideas are common to those emotionally impaired people that would lead to recklessness in behaviour. Also, concentration problems are very nerve-racking that may cause trouble in focusing and in making decisions. Individuals who suffer from depression experience unexplainable aches and pains, and also an increase in physical complaints like headaches, back pain, aching muscles, and stomach pain. Every action has its outcome. To be soaked in the dirty waters of depression would lead to death. Sentencing yourself to the utmost hazard that people would stereotypically resort. These people who actually carry out something wicked and think immorally would be the people who do not even consider that every second counts. The upshot of every regrettable act would distress every variant that surrounds them. The impenetrable fact that your loved ones undergo unacceptability stage. This selfish act would never content every individual and would never conquer justice on its head. You can fight it! Williams, as a matter of fact, has concluded that life is unfair—that he can’t carry all the loads anymore by himself. Come on! You have friends. They could have at least help you deal with all those agitating pains and sorrows in life, because that’s one of their responsibilities as your fellas. Sometimes, the problem comes from within you. There were times where you are afraid to call them or chat with them or share to them what you feel because sometimes, whether you like it or not, they are the reasons of your pain. Well, you have your family. Run to them if you can’t carry the pain anymore. Another thing, don’t just hide your feelings inside. Don’t let your friends or your family fortune-tell what you feel. They are not powerful superheroes. Don’t just hang yourself in the middle of nowhere because there are those who love you for what you are, and will accept you for who you are, whatever conditions it may be. Trust them! Be open to them! Healing takes time but to resort in snatching your own life will just worsen the fact that it is morally unacceptable. Remember, you are not God. You are impenetrably sullen with tremendous vile thoughts. Ending your own life will always be erroneous in the eyes of The Most High! So think again! Dear TN,

I have a boyfriend before I enrolled in college. We’ve been in a serious relationship for two years and five months. Apparently, he was cornered by a girl and lived with her for almost two years. But he promised me that he won’t marry the girl and that he will fix everything. Lately, he’s been calling me to meet him and he will explain everything. Part of my heart felt happy, but part of it also felt sad because the other girl begged at me not to bother them anymore. What should I do? –Miss Huhu

We feel the dilemma you are chained into Miss Huhu. For two years you were seriously in love with that guy. But he was ‘cornered’ setting aside the ‘serious’ relationship you had. But instead, he was cornered by some other girl, or should I say, he chose the girl more than you, setting aside the ‘love’ you had? and he was cornered by another woman, for two years also? Loving is not about how you felt for a short span of two years, it is about determining whether you would last longer than that. --TN

Vol.XXXII Issue No. 14

An incurable disease. A mission. A challenge. A nomination. The dare. The acceptance. The act. The coldness. Achievement. Then, goes the charity. But here comes the pain, numbness, suffering and even death from an ice bucket challenge. Admit it, this worldwide sensation is like a contagious disease that let those innocent ones succumb to its indulgence. It’s like a plague that is adhered by many. This seems to be a joke or something. Come on! This game is just ridiculous. Bathing yourself with an ice cold water just to pass time out? That’s pathetic. But wait, later did many realize that this ought to be ridiculous game has a purpose—to spread awareness and continue the research for curing Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS. Ice Bucket Challenge is created in order for the challenger to experience the feeling of having the ALS disease like numbness and immobility. Okay. Thumbs up to those who created this challenge. But there are cons and aggravations prior to achieving this game. And talking about the game’s clichés, it will just add up to this article’s simplicity. So why not go to the mishandled game things. Note, this is not to discourage you upon entering the realms of the game. This is just a reminder. So good luck! Consider the cons You might be having fun doing the ice bucket challenge but the consequences might be deeper than what you think. Remember, they are raising something for awareness, medically speaking. And because they are dealing with medical science, searching for answers that are yet to be known, animals are serving as baits for the experiments. They are not just aggravating animals, they are also using human embryos in their researches. Woah! So now we’re talking about human life here— cannibalism perhaps? Well, now that’s a thing to be considered. Cliché: You are also wasting water. And it’s clean water. Don’t you know that Africa is suffering from hunger and drought? Well, this has been one of those few criticisms from advocates around the world. So better be mindful before doing anything about this sensational game.

Another thing, be careful because if unwearyingly done, this game might cause tragic medical conditions, especially for those who suffer from high-blood pressure or heart disease, even the pregnant and the elderlies. You might just faint, go into shock, be immobile for a moment and even succumb from a cardiac arrest. Hello! Bathing your body with an ice cold water is not that easy, even by the looks of it. Speaking of tragic, this game has already claimed lives of the avid, doing those kinky little risky stunts. One died after jumping off an 80 feet cliff and the other one was unlucky enough to be hit to death by a horse kick. Many were also rushed to the nearest hospitals after doing the game. One after being poured with a 400-gallon of water from a chopper, the other was hit by a barrel of water from their home’s 2nd storey and many were rushed due to carelessness. It’s a good thing of course Don’t be discouraged. In fact, this game’s goodwill has led many to realize that people all over the globe must stand for a sole purpose. Another cliché: the game is really fun, especially if you’ll talk about those nominations and the ways on achieving the challenge itself. Yet sad to say, some had gone beyond their limitations. And imagine, the more you nominate, the more people accepts the

I could still remember those times I spent with those six girls as I journeyed through life. I could still reminisce those times of laughter, tears and joy that we had shared within that span of four years. I could still keep on reminding myself those times of hardships which became easier to carry because you had those people whom you trusted the most. We were studying happily together in our high school days—that was four years. Within that time, we managed to be so close with each other wherein if one goes, the others will follow. That if one ceases the chance and got frustrated, the others shall feel the same way too. That if one is broken hearted and blue, the others will share the same loath and sentiments. Graduation day. I never thought of saying goodbye to them. Simply because I know that even if that day meant goodbye, we will never leave or forget each other. I know that they will not just throw those four years away and simply fade. And because we made vows and sealed it with trust, love, loyalty, and friendship. Yet we did went on separate roads. But that did not stop us from seeing each other, and that we shall never change. The real problem started as we became junior college students. One of us became pregnant and she was afraid to face anybody—thinking that many will pound her to shame. That was just the beginning. Our situation got worse. We haven’t seen each other for some time and they had met new friends and so was I. They had shared more times with It’s amazing when strangers become friends. Yet it’s sad them than with us. I kept on patching things up but they were too busy to to think that sometimes, even friends turn back to be strangers. lend their time to fix the broken string. They kept their distance from me.

challenge. “The more, the merrier” as they say. This means the more people accept the challenge, the more money is being raised for awareness. And guess what! As of August 27, the creators of this challenge has raised a towering, eye popping, nerve wracking, stomach churning amount of $94.3 million. Do the Math and you’ll get more than 4 Billion Pesos! Wow! You could buy Robinsons Mall or travel around the world for a lifetime if that’s the case. Or better yet, feed the hungry with that amount. Also, they are having an estimated increase of almost $10 million per day. Just imagine those people who risked their lives just to add a digit to that amount. They really are charitable. [Update the figure before this will be published!] Again, this is not to discourage you. Perhaps, you can take this as a friendly reminder. Remember that sometimes, achieving one thing leads to the sacrifice of others—even risk the lives of some if not, snuff it out from them. So better consider everything or perhaps scale one at a time. Just take good care of yourselves, okay? So go on, savour your moment doing the sensational, contagious ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE!

Even if I forced myself to be numb and ignore everything, it still hurts! Finally, I told them, “Bhest, gikapuy naman ko’g lagas ninyu uy! Wala mo’y time para magka-bonding tag usob pero naa mo’y time para sa inyong new friends. Gina-distance ninyo inyong self sa akoa as if I am having a virus. What’s wrong? When you need me, I will always be beside you bisan pa ug busy ko. Pero kung manginahanglan bitaw ko, wala mo! Pero kasabot ko kay mga busy na gud mo. Then asa na man atong vows? Wala na lang to? Kalimtan na lang? AM I STILL YOUR BESTFRIEND? OR WAS I YOUR BESTFRIEND?” I expected to hear soft statements but it turned out the other way around. They put all the blame on me when, in fact, they are to be blamed too. That triggered to have our misunderstanding—which is still not settled until now. Some asked apologies and some didn’t. Well, I just can’t force them to do or say something because they are forced to do so. I got tired. I thought we needed space. We needed time. Yes, if you’d ask me, I did not just treat them as friends or ‘best of friends’—they are part of what I am now. If I could only turn back time just to remind them of the treasured past, I would. But I just can’t. For you, treasure your friends because they can help you but don’t give everything because at the end of the day, you will be facing the mirror and will be asking yourself, “Am I worth the friendship?” or “Do they deserve me and my trust?” Erza’s favorite pastime is reading Stallion Riding Club. SAS director disagrees HCHTE fieldtrip suspension recommendation STUDENT AFFAIRS SERVICES (SAS) Director Robert Poculan disagreed to the recommendation of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education (HCHTE) to suspend the fieldtrip activities of all elementary to tertiary levels after the reported fieldtrip tragedy of Bulacan State University. Poculan, as the head of the institution responsible for all student affairs and activities in the university, said he disagrees on the suspension of fieldtrips by the HCHTE because fieldtrips are important to students for their holistic development and as well as for them to be competitive. He added fieldtrips give students the required experiences which can be used for their future career. Moreover, he also said it would be an indispensable part in the formation of the students physically, emotionally and intellectually. “Without fieldtrips, we cannot develop students in the manner we want them to,” he said.

Juvi Anqui and Crizza Anne Castellano, both Tourism students, said fieldtrips can give them unique experiences and it would be unlucky for their part if they can experience the privilege of having fieldtrips. “Fieldtrips are opportunities but we have no choice if it will be suspended,” the two students said. Another Tourism student, Marissa Catan, said if the adjournment of the fieldtrips will be for the students’ safety and security, then the university must follow what the higher authorities will implement. He claimed two Master degrees… Master of Science in Information Technology and Masters in Computer Science.” In a resolution issued by the Civil Service Commission office last July 10, 2014, it states

that for a judicious action, the instant anonymous complaint was forwarded to the university president for his appropriate action since Cabanlit is well within the disciplinary jurisdiction of the university president. Meanwhile, according to Atty. Banquirigo, a preliminary investigation was already conducted

which was followed by an issuance of a formal charge by the president. Moreover, Real emphasized, “When a person is under preventive suspension, a person must be temporarily removed within 90 days from the scene of the crime [NORSU]. It is in the law.”

On the other hand, Poculan said they cannot give the students an assurance that there will be no accidents that might happen because according to him, “we are only humans and we don’t know what danger may come.” Despite this, he said whenever there will be fieldtrips, chaperons and students must abide with the guidelines, imposed by SAS and the university. The guidelines include having one chaperon for every 20 students, remembering the security and safety briefing, keeping away from danger and vices which could lead to some preventable accidents. “We should not take these things for granted and we should also hope and pray for guidance and safety,” he said.

action to be done by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) since the proper written suspension was not yet fully implemented. “If that it will be approved by the CHED, then automatically we will have the suspension of all the other upcoming fieldtrips of the school and with the approval also of the University Administration,” he said. Furthermore, Poculan said in reference to the BSU tragedy, “the fault of the few of the participants should not be implicated as the fault of all”.

Villanueva re-elected as LSO prexy

W h a t w o u l d Norsunians expect from the League of Student Organizations (LSO) president in his second term?

A Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management student, Vince Anthony Villanueva, was once again elected as the LSO president of NORSU during the election held in NORSU gym on August 8. Villanueva, who is also the Hospitality and Management Society (HMS) president, said he felt humbled after getting 66 votes out of the 70 organizations that attended the meeting. “I feel honored that I’m reelected again for League of Students Organizations because it shows that the organization presidents still have their trust on me and that they still

believe that my leadership is good, bringing LSO to higher heights,” he said.

Plans Being the re-elected president, Villanueva has already set out plans for NORSU student organizations. Villanueva said he will encourage each organization to create activities. In that way, they will individually be known as an organization and not just a part of LSO, he said. Moreover, he also pointed out the attendance of organization’s representatives during meetings which needs improvement. “We have some organizations that are very active during registration and would vanish during meetings and activities,” he said.

He added that he is continuously trying to find ways to convince the presidents of each organization to attend LSO’s activities. “I’ve learned from my first year of administration that students don’t read bulletin boards. I tried texting them (the organization presidents) one by one through group message and there was a positive response to that,” Villanueva shared Villanueva also revealed that the main highlight of LSO are the activities on Founders Week Celebration, specifically the Booth Stock Festival. According to Villanueva, he will take off activities that were less participated and he plans to get rid of the old activities and try the new ones.—By Roma-Amor A. Oligo and Maria Dominique P. Iskolar ng Bayan Bill

With the aim of uplifting the future lives of Filipino families, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano proposed the Iskolar ng Bayan Bill that mandates the offering of full scholarship grants to outstanding public high school graduate students. The Senate Bill No. 2275 otherwise known as the Iskolar ng Bayan bill is an act that expands access to education through open learning and distance education in tertiary levels of education. As the bill prescribed, it mandates all State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) to give automatic admission and full scholarship grants to the top ten public high school students of their respective graduating classes. The filing of the said bill was spearheaded by Cayetano. He addressed that the “access to quality education is a right, not a privilege, even at the tertiary level. Let us set aside all talks of politics and focus our efforts on Filipino families and how to address their day-to-day problems like

how to provide quality education for their children.” According to the report of Yahoo News, Cayetano said there are 7,913 public high schools in the country. “That is roughly 79,130 students who are sure of going to college if this measure is made law, or 79,130 Filipino families who have a chance of waking up to a better future,” the senator added. Although the Bill was proposed to all SUCs, the University of the Philippines will be excluded because of its institutional autonomy as the national university based on its charter. As of the present time, the bill has been approved on third reading by the Senate and has recently passed the appropriations committee in the House of Representatives. Once enacted, this bill will change the current scholarship scheme of all SUCs that offer only full scholarships to the valedictorian graduates of high schools. — By Oliver Orlando Dometita

the law was the one being scrutinized and examined by the lawyers,” citing out that the Annual Procurement Plan should only be approved by the head of Procuring Entity which is the university president himself. The president said he is open for investigation on those projects and that there are documents that proper bidding was done before those projects were implemented. Why should I be crucified? Real expressed, “The University is functioning normally, the operation is okay, and it [issues] does not in any way affected the operations of the university.”

Real proudly disclosed, “Within a period of six months, NORSU got outstanding performance in the so called PBB Performance Based Bonus and one criterion for that is the seal of transparency. In 2013, I was congratulated by DBM again, NORSU is best performer... Outstanding!” He continued, “I should not be crucified immediately. Every person deserves the due process of law… even the hardened criminal on earth deserves a day in court so, why should I be crucified?” “I am still in control of the situation. I am still the president of the university and my term will end on February 13, 2016,” Real claimed.

cause the downfall of the university. He also expects an executive order asking him to withdraw his designation as VP. Furthermore, when asked about whether he knows if the president has committed corrupt practices, Dayot said that he will disclose it in the proper time. He also mentioned that the presence of a certain ‘Niño Zamora’ whom he said the president always ask consultation from, influenced much of Real’s decision. The forum was attended and spearheaded by Dr. Peter Dayot, Roche Cabanlit, Dr. Noel Marjon

Yasi, Fenona Gabuan, Engr. Henedino Ramacho, Atty. Alan Gel Cordova, student leaders’ Daryl Ligan and Rojan Talita, and some NORSU faculty members wearing black bands around their arms to openly demonstrate their plea for the president [Real] to step down. Faculty’s and student leaders plea “Enough is enough!” said Roche Cabanlit, addressing his disgust to the president. He added that NORSU has suffered enough for the past two years of Real’s administration. According to him, out of 130

[union and non-union] faculty members from the different campuses of NORSU, more than a hundred signed the signature campaign asking Real to step down as president.“Kini pagpadayag sa among sentimyento nga insakto na!” Cabanlit, showing off his black arm band which symbolizes their request for Real to step down. In addition, Engr. Henedino Ramacho said they will be asking help from notable persons in the congress. “This is our diplomatic and professional way of asking him [Real] to step down,” Ramacho said.

Meanwhile, Federated Student Government acting President Daryl Ligan stressed, “As the university president, you do not own the university, it was just entrusted to you! And if we, the students and faculty sees that we cannot entrust it to you anymore, then you should step down!” Real responds Real responded positively to Dr. Dayot’s withdrawal of support by letting the VPAPD decide for the circumstances of his actions.

“I still maintain being a gentleman and a statesman as of the moment,” the university president said. “It is up for Dr. Dayot to do the proper action… this is a hypothetical statement and he can read the meaning between the lines,” he continued. Moreover, Real said he has been open to discussions since the day he started office. He denied the claim that he is not listening to the advices of his VPs. “Did I not listen to the suggestion of Dr. Dayot when he asked for two portfolio positions?” he said pointing that Dayot aside from being the VPAPD, is also the dean of the Graduate School.

Mr. & Ms. CAS 2014 crowned The search for Mister and Miss College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) 2014 was showcased as part of the college’s Acquaintance Party on August 15. The paired representatives of Mass Communication grabbed the titles.

This year’s Mr. and Ms. CAS are Chris Ian Jaudian and May Alexandria Krizia Hamsirani, respectively, who are both Bachelor of Mass Communication students. According to Jaudian, he was not expecting of what the result would be. “I thought I would be out of place in the ranking… my co-candidates did their best and I also did mine,” he said. He added that he is grateful to his teachers and classmates who supported and cheered him up which gave him confidence to perform well on stage. His partner, Hamsirani, said she was not also expecting to win since all her co-candidates were beautiful and equipped with wit and talent. “I really gave it all so there would be no regrets or whatsoever and also to make my Mass Communication family proud,” she said. Meanwhile, other pair of candidates who also made it on top three were: representatives of Social Sciences and Information Technology Departments, Joshua Duran and Nelyn Infante respectively, were hailed as the 2nd placers who will

both represent CAS in Mister and Miss Hugyawan 2014. Mico Martin Argallon of the Mathematics Department and Irish Nicole Suarin of the Psychology Department who both grabbed 3rd place will also represent the college in Mister and Miss Intramurals 2014. The pageant was participated in by ten pairs of representatives coming from the different departments of the College of Arts and Sciences. According to a fourth year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) student, Lady Jean Paderes, she enjoyed watching the pageant and all the winners are deserving. On the other hand, she added “boring siya gamay, sadya ang talent portion sa mga candidates pero nay uban bitin.” This was seconded by another BSIT student, Charmelyn Calidguid, as she mentioned that the pageant was not that good. “The pageant was fine though I find it a bit boring. I guess the newly crowned Mr. and Ms. CAS 2014 deserved the title because they showed their best shots. Good luck —By Kimberly Rose E. Lumaya

Android programming taught to CSIT students

To enhance the students’ knowledge on the modern trend, Android programming lectures were taught to Computer Science and Information Technology students in a seminar held at NORSU Gymnasium on August 16. The guest speakers, Ken Balogo and Clyde Dael, who are programming instructors of Central Philippines State University, shared their knowledge on Android programming. The seminar introduced the use of Android as the widely used operating system (OS) for smartphones. As the most used software of most phone, the seminar introduced more about Android and its challenges and opportunities it offers to computer programmers and

information technologists. Also the guest speakers demonstrated the steps on Android software development and provided a kit to help them develop a software. After the seminar, participants were encouraged to ask questions about the topic. Students were also given certificates as well as the guest speakers. According to Computer Information System Director Guilbert Nicanor Atillo, the first Android seminar conducted in NORSU is one of the many seminars attended by Computer Science and Information Technology students as part of their “Seminars and Field Trips” subject. “We’re having more IT related seminars to enhance knowledge of students,” he stated. Students who participated in the seminar gained the basic knowledge

incidents. In an interview with The NORSUnian, Gabuan related that on August 5, 2013 at around 10 o’ clock in the morning, she, together with seven others, were called by the university president for a conference. She said three students went to Real’s residence in Bais City on August 4, 2013 and had raised complaints against her. The allegations include alleged plagiarism of a thesis, collection of lodging fees from students living in her place, selling of feasibility studies, using of trees in the NORSUBSC as charcoal and doubts on her qualifications as an animal science instructor. She denied the allegations and explained her side but the President raised his voice. As she recalled it, she said, “He attempted to smash the coffee mug in my face.” Furthermore, she said Real even threatened her by saying that he is untouchable because the assistant director of Civil Service Commission (CSC) Cebu is his cousin. However, on August 29, 2014 in a press conference, Real denied this assertions and jokingly said, “Sayop iyang information, dili ko sa (CSC) Cebu naa’y ig-agaw. Ang akong igagaw tua sa Manila central office.” Gabuan furthered that Real told her that he will take some of her teaching assignment. “He maligned

me and deloaded my teaching load,” she said. Also, she has allegedly received executive orders assigning her to Mabinay Campus then to Main Campus II and back to BSC campus. In the executive order, the reason for the reassigning Gabuan is because of exigency of service. Also in the press conference, Real said it was because of the issue of not refunding 30 agriculture students when the supposed field trip was canceled. “They got their money back,” Gabuan said. Nevertheless, the first complaint was withdrawn by Gabuan since the Board of Regents (BOR) according to her, has not looked into the issue. Gabuan files second complaint On June 24, 2014, an administrative complaint was filed by Gabuan to the Board of Regents, stating that she has not received her salary since December 2013 until the present time. In her affidavit, Real, NORSUBSC campus administrator Letecia Trayvilla, NORSU-BSC campus accountant Mark Angelo Crusio and NORSU-BSC campus bookkeeper Ardyth Andulana withheld her salary but has not received any disallowance or salary suspension order. Real claimed he has already r e l e a s e d G a b u a n ’s w a g e . “Kanang iyang giingon nga wala siya paswelduhi, dili gud

na tinood. Dugay ra nako siyang gipaswelduhan,” he said. Real further stressed the salary was delayed because Gabuan lacked restructured Daily Time Record (DTR) and had not complied her clearances. He added Gabuan even asked QUAMC director Jim Villahermosa to help her with these requirements. Sought for he side, Gabuan denied that she is not submitting her DTR and showed to TN her clearance which was approved by the university president. “Mr. Cortes (bodyguard of the administrator) took all my DTR upon the order of Niño Zamora (Executive Assistant of Real).” “I did not ask any favor from Dr. Villahermosa,” she added. Moreover, she disclosed another harassment she underwent wherein he fingerprint has been deleted in the memory of the electronic-DTR. “According to the operator, t is upon the order of the administrator”. Gabuan asked Real to tell the truth. “The truth will set him free,” she said. She also asked her fellow faculty members who may have experienced the same, to assert for their rights. When asked if she is willing to have a talk with Real, she said “I am not yet ready to face him.” On the contrary, Real is willing to have a dialog with her. “Sultianay na lamang ta ani, ngano pa mang magkihaanay,” he said.
