Welcome From King Nathan Weller Dear patrons of Marysville Strawberry Festival, My name is Nathan Weller. I am a junior attending Marysville Getchell High School here in Marysville, WA. This year I have the wonderful privilege of being the King of the Royal Court of the Marysville Strawberry Festival. The Royal Court is the official host of the Festival, and I appreciate the opportunity to both represent and serve my Marysville community during 2018. The value of a community event cannot be overstated. A time when an entire community has the opportunity to gather and celebrate together is an incredible experience. I have always jumped at the

opportunities to attend the host of events Marysville features. Since I moved to Marysville when I was four years old, I have always loved what Marysville has to offer, and I hope you will, too. Marysville is a lovely city with extraordinary residents and a great atmosphere. Marysville Strawberry Festival is a time to celebrate Marysville for everything it is, everything it has, and everything we can make it. I write to you with an important message: be of good cheer. At times, our lives, situations, or outlooks appear grim or less than ideal. I believe that our perSee KING on page 6

Greetings From The Maryfest President

Eighty-seven years old… WOW! We are delighted to have you join us to help celebrate the Marysville

Strawberry Festival’s 87th year. The Maryfest Board of Directors and volunteers have been working to bring you a festival we hope will make the community proud. I would personally like to invite you to a new event being held this year to show off the talent and creativity of the Marysville youth. Creative Kids Art Celebration will be held Saturday, June 16th at Totem Middle school featuring different arts and music from kids of all ages. Roy Robinson Chevrolet, Subaru and RV’s will be featuring the latest in cars and mo-

torhomes at the Market at Asbury Field along with arts & craft vendors, food vendors and great entertainment. If you are looking for the latest in clothing attire, you can see them at the Fashion Show luncheon held at Leifer Manor on Tuesday, June 12th, and for more local entertainment and talent please check out the Talent Show Thursday, June 14th held at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Auditorium. Of course, the highlight of the festival is the Grand Parade, sponsored by Alaska Airlines on Saturday, June 16th. This pre-

mier NW parade will again feature drill teams, bands, equestrian units and beautiful floats from all over Washington, Oregon and Canada. For more detailed information on events, locations and times please see our website, www. maryfest.org. I, along with the Maryfest Board of Directors want to thank the City of Marysville and the Tulalip Tribes for all the help and support they have given us this year along with all of the wonderful sponsors. But most of all we want to thank you, the See HIATT on page 6

King Nathan Weller King Nathan Weller is the first King that the Strawberry Festival has had in a number of years and he hopes to help make the festival a fun and exciting event for the community. “The Strawberry Festival is a really cool community event,” he said, “so I just wanted to become a part of that.” He said he has heard from friends who have been royalty and wanted to have the same experience as they did. So far he said he has en-

joyed the experience. “I like going to the parades and the outreach,” he said. “I enjoy adding to other communities’ events and supporting the events that happen here in Marysville.” Nathan said he has grown up with the festival. “I’ve gone to the carnival most years, because I used to go with my family, and then middle school and high school happened and I started going with my own friends, so See NATHAN on page 12

He’s also liked being a part of the band for the community aspect. “When I’ve performed in ensembles I’ve liked making friends. I also just like the process of learning certain pieces of music,” he said. Nathan is a Boy Scout who is currently working on his Eagle Scout project. In past years she has marched in the parade as part of her school’s band and as part of the Naval Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps (a.k.a. NJROTC) program. Kaitlyn is a MarysvillePilchuck High School junior involved in NJROTC, currently holding the rank of Master Chief. In her freshman year she joined the program and has enjoyed the drill training there. “I’ve liked the things it’s taught me. It’s taught me more leadership skills than I ever would have gotten elsewhere,” she said. “It’s a really big commitment to myself and the team,” she said. After high school she hopes to attend a military academy if she gets accepted to one. At school she said she enjoys learning about science. “It’s so fun and it comes to me so naturally. It’s a really cool subject,” she said. Writing and English class is also helpful for her, she said, as it helps her express herself.

“The written word is much more powerful for me because it’s easier to put out,” she said. Outside of school she also enjoys singing because of its expressive abilities, said Kaitlyn. “It gives me an opportunity to express myself more fluently. I’m really bad at public speaking and that’s one of the biggest obstacles I had with the pageant,” she said. Kaitlyn is also active in her community as a volunteer for the VFW, serving as a color guard and serving food sometimes, and at Marysville clothing bank St. Joseph’s House. She has been volunteering at St. Joseph’s House since the fifth grade. “I go there and help out with the clothing. They help out the community a lot and I like to give help to them when they need it,” she said.

Grand Parade highlight of Strawberry Festival Saturday, June 16 7:45 p.m. State Avenue Saturday night during the Strawberry Festival will bring a spectacle that winds its way through downtown Marysville. The Strawberry Festival Grand Parade begins at 7:45 p.m., Saturday, June 16, starting on 76th Street before turning onto State Avenue, then turning east on Third Avenue before concluding at Alder.

Parade organizers have been working to find groups to participate in the parade after getting a late start this year. “Everything is kind of in the works right now,” parade organizer Carol Kapua said in early May. She added that a nice variety of entries have already signed up for the parade ranging from several floats, bands and entries from the festival See GRAND on page 45

Music-themed float jams at parades More than a dozen or so volunteers have worked for months rehabilitating and redesigning a symbol of Marysville’s civic pride that thousands of parade-goers will see during the numerous community festivals that take place throughout the Pacific Northwest. The Marysville Strawberry Festival float participated in the first parade of the season. A group of seven or so people ventured to Pierce County to participate in the annual Daffodil Festival,

which includes participating in four parades in one day — Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting. “It was a long day, but it went well,” said Tom King, chairman of the Strawberry Festival Float Committee. The annual Daffodil Parade was the first of a host of weekend parades that volunteers and Strawberry Festival royalty will attend throughout the summer and fall. The 2018 parade schedule shows they will be visiting community festivals as far away as

rysville for the Holidays parade. Marysville Strawberry Festival is part of the Northwest Festival Hosting Association. A group of 10 organizations, members support each other’s festival by sending a delegation and float to participate in parades that take place throughout the summer and fall. Volunteers have been working since January to get the float ready for the sum-

mer. At the conclusion of the 2017 Merrysville for the Holidays parade, volunteers discovered several issues with the float that needed to be resolved. King said the float equipment needed quite a bit of maintenance during the off-season including new tires, improvements on the electrical system and a good cleaning before work could begin to redesign the float to jibe with the theme of the 2018 Strawberry Festival. This year’s theme is titled “Jam ‘In,” and the logo features a traditional jar of jam along with a guitar that has

a strawberry comprising its body. “The whole exterior is all new,” King said. King said around 15 people have been working to rebuild the float. King said he was grateful the City of Marysville provided the space to work and store the float. Volunteers have been working out of an old auto repair shop located on First Street. Not including the Strawberry Festival royalty, it takes between seven and eight people to staff the float for

a festival trip. That includes a driver and people to walk alongside the float during a parade. King said it’s a challenge to find people who are qualified to drive the float, which requires someone to have a commercial drivers license. If anyone with a commercial drivers license is interesting in driving the float during parades, they should call King at 425-238-0994.
