The second impeachment of Donald Trump By Daisy Carter news2@thenorthernlight.org

On January 11th David Cicilline along with Jamie Raskin and Ted Lieu presented articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump. This would be the first time in United States history that a president would be impeached twice. This next trial would indicate that he would have been indicted. The house is trying to impeach Trump on accounts of incitement of insurrection for encouraging his supporters to inciting violence on the Capitol. Articles of impeachment were introduced on Jan. 8 and a trial was held on Jan. 13 on the same senate floor where the raid occurred. ‌ “[The president] is a clear and present danger-the house has a sacred obligation to stand with the truth,” house speaker Nancy Pelosi said at the beginning of the trial on Jan. 13. ‌ During the trial, many republican senators were against the articles of impeachment because it wouldn’t make much impact with only a week left in Trump’s presidency.. Others who didn’t support the second impeachment would also state that impeaching the then president would insite more violence. In the end, the vote was 232 to 197 for the second impeachment of former President Trump. ‌ 10 republicans stood with the democrats on a second impeachment. Dan Newhouse from Washington state was

one of the republicans who did vote on the articles of impeachment. ‌ “Last week there was a domestic threat at the door of the Capitol and he did nothing to stop it. That is why, with a heavy heart and clear resolve, I will vote yes on these articles of impeachment,” Newhouse said to the senate on Jan. 13. ‌ Leading up to inauguration day, thousands of troops from all 50 states were sent to the Capitol for additional security. Not only was the U.S. capitol taking extra precautions, there were also more police around state capitols as well. ‌ After the insurrection, many individuals weren charged with storming the capitol. A popular social media network called Parlor was removed from many downloading platforms because of the spread of misinformation and hate speech. This platform was used mainly by right wing conspiracy theorists. Many of those same people are trying to get the platform back, but have yet to be successful. ‌ The senate officially gave the articles of impeachment to the house of representatives on Jan. 25. The official trial will start on Feb. 5. ormer President Trump has the lowest approval rating from a leaving president with a 29% approval rating, according to slate.com.

Movie Analysis: The American President (1995) By Daisy Carter news2@thenorthernlight.org

With a new president in office, I thought I would watch a movie about a presidential administration and “The American President” came up. The film came out on 1995, 11 15th and was directed by Rob Reiner. This movie is a comedy, drama, and romance according to IMDB I would personally say it’s more of a romance because of how focused it is on the relationship between an environmental lobbyist and the president. The movie had a budget of around 62 million dollars and grossed about 60 million in the US, according to IMDB. ‌ “A widowed U.S. President running for reelection and an environmental lobbyist fall in love. It’s all above-board, but “politics is perception,” and sparks fly anyway,” according to a summary from IMDB‌ “The American President” stars Michael Douglas as President Andrew Shepherd, Annette Bening who plays Sydney Ellen Wade, Martin Sheen as AJ MacInerney and Michael J. Fox plays Lewis Rothschild. Shepherd is a laid back president who has an amazing approval rate which is good for his reelection campaign. Sydney Ellen Wade is a passionate environmental lobbyist who will stop at nothing to make sure the environment is protected. ‌

The film was nominated for many awards but received one from the National Board Reviews who gave them the award for Top 10 Film. The film was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music and five Golden Globes which included Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Motion Picture. ‌ At the time, President Bill Clinton and his staff granted permission for “The American President” cast and production design team to visit the White House on five separate occasions. The writer for the film went on to write a drama TV show called “The West Wing” which is also based in the White House. ‌ I think that this is the first film that I was kind of disappointed with after watching. I should mention I’m not really one for drama romance. I felt like the plot was rushed, but I understand it because maybe they were trying to emulate how a president is on an average day. What I did notice was that the ending was especially rushed because they spent so much time establishing the problem and the relationship. The film didn’t even reach the climax until the last 30 mins of the movie. Some of the lines are also a little cringy, but I excuse that with the age of the film.‌ The performance by Michael Douglas as the sly president was surprisingly

OPINION By Thomas Richards Contributor

Dear Northern Light Newspaper, I write to express what others may feel: I dislike the way our classes are compelled to be held. For me the social aspects of education are beneficial. To be with classmates, to sit myself with them and listen to a professor, I not only learn but I become part of a whole, and I share with classmates intellectual interests. Granted, there is a benefit to students who can take courses through distance learning, but I want to be part of a group. That doesn’t mean I share intimacies with classmates or that we are all buddies, but we have group work and discussions, both part of learning and the way life conducts itself generally. Our skills are honed in discussions and we learn cooperation and to listen to opposing views.

On my first visit to the Student Union a few years ago it was alive with students and staff and for my first course I went to the bookstore for my books. Students were shopping and mingling and some were having coffee and snacks. That is the social atmosphere that should surround university life. Now the bookstore is in a huge building and no one is there except others in line to order or pick up books. A student who studies science cannot look at nor thumb through books assigned to literature, as we could before. We are students in a lifeless desert, unlike real deserts.
