Harlem Globetrotters share basketball, life tips Catholic School gathered inside the periodical lounge of York Woods Public Library on Finch Avenue, east of Jane Street, to hear Flight Time Lange and Scooter Christensen read books and

pick up basketball tricks with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Kids were then given orange paper hearts and asked to complete the phrase, "Love Can ______."

Some responses were

"Love Can be indestructible," "Love Can take you further in life," and "Love Can help other people believe in themselves and make them feel special."

The Globetrotters read Salt in His Shoes, a story

about Michael Jordan.

They interspersed the reading with anecdotes from their own childhoods about how their parents loved and supported them to chase their own dreams.

The event was made possible through the partnership between World Vision and the Harlem Globetrotters, who are in Toronto preparing for games throughout Ontario.

Without the public’s support, the police can’t do their jobs effectively, Weidmark said.

"In some cases, in some neighbourhoods, in Toronto and everywhere, if police aren’t trusted, crime isn’t reported. If crime isn’t reported, we can’t do our job."

At 12 Division, which serves 11 Toronto neighbourhoods, seven of which are Neighbourhood Improvement Areas, officers are out in the communities, on foot and bike patrols, attending events, teaching kids to cook, running basketball programs, and one officer even teaches kids how to make figurines.

Scott Weidmark, commander of 12 Division, is retiring after 37 years in policing.

He officially steps down at the end of May, three years after taking command of the unit at Black Creek and Trethewey drives.

And, the community will miss him, said Barbara Spyropoulos, who cochairs 12 Division’s community police liaison committee (CPLC) with Weidmark.

"He’s such an excellent leader. He’s a team guy. Everybody’s input is valued and you’re treated as an equal," Spyropoulos said.

Those who work with him and for him strive for results, she said, because of his positive leadership and his work has made the community around 12 Division safer, she said.

"Where we can, we try to influence those things and try and help build those things up. If we build those things up or are part of that, then it does reduce crime in the neighbourhood," he said.

The Scarborough-raised son of a police officer and near lifelong Toronto resident started in policing in 1979 in Edmonton and then was hired in Toronto in 1981. Promoted to sergeant in 1998, he continued to work on the front lines and at the Toronto Police College.

He designed crisis-resolution and use-of-force training. He later worked directly under then-Chief Bill Blair before coming to 12 Division.

During his career, he’s saved people’s lives, and had others die in his arms, but, in all, he said he’s had a good career.

"Not everything is perfect, but generally speaking I’ve loved every job I’ve had," he said.

Toronto’s embarrassment of riches spells trouble Toronto has always been a city bursting at the seams.

We don’t have enough road capacity for all our cars and trucks, and our public transit system is underdeveloped and overcrowded.

We are just getting a handle on our aging sewer infrastructure, which has been neglected for decades and has shown it after heavy rains.

Mitigating poverty and homelessness has been a constant struggle, and our stock of subsidized public housing cannot keep up.

Now we can add another pressure to the list of forces bedevilling Toronto: Wealth - in the form of the city’s obscenely overvalued stock of housing that is decidedly not subsidized.

According to the Toronto Real Estate Board, the price of a house in the Toronto area has risen by 33.2 per cent over the past year, and now sits at $900,000 on average.

That is good news for people who’ve bought their home in the past decade. It augurs badly for young families or anyone else hoping to put down roots in our communities through the traditional and powerful route of home ownership.

The choices for those of more limited means are unappetizing. Even those earning high-five-figure salary will have a hard time gathering a down payment and paying a mortgage on a $1-million property, but attempting to do so is one option.

Rental housing is another possibility - but hyperinflated real estate costs have had the effect of hyperinflating the rental market, too. A third option - simply seeking housing elsewhere - is the perhaps the most viable for house-hunters, but disastrous for a city.

As Canada’s largest city and the country’s major financial centre, Toronto has always been marked as a focal point for wealth, but that has never been the city’s sole identity, and certainly not its best identity. At our best, we live the city’s motto; Diversity Our Strength.

And diversity is sorely curtailed, in a city where the price of entry is on average $1 million.

It’s encouraging to see our political leadership at all three levels of government taking note, even if it is somewhat belated. Whether the actions that have so far been proposed - taxes on vacant units and offshore investor purchases to cool speculation, and changes to the Tenant Protection Act to mitigate gouging rent increases - will be enough, is another question.

There is another solution; a catastrophic market correction that will cost people their homes, but eventually set the ship right. Let us pray it doesn’t come to that.

Prayers in the rain for troubled Jamestown The rain starts falling as they walk up Jamestown Crescent. Memories come back, every one of them painful.

"Beckles got shot at this door, right up there. We had a prayer rally up here," says Rev. Carmen Lewis.

Gordon Beckles, 46, died on his porch in March 2015.

Lecent Ross, 14, was killed as a handgun went off four months later. "Her mom is just up here. Oh, there’s just been so many of them," says Al Bowen, a local pastor.

Andrew King, another pastor, asks God to guide police working in the community.

"Wash away the crime, the grime, Father," he says, asking God to remove the "negative element" here, to give hope to Jamestown’s children, food to its cupboards, jobs to people not working.

"They may not know it," he adds, "but we’re interceding for them, praying for them."

Vincent Crisanti, the local councillor, says the city and its Toronto Community Housing Corporation do their best. He points to new courtyard stone among the drab townhouses, more se-

"You find that people are more willing to come out and talk, even with police around," says Const. Anthony Amantea, but notes there were two shootings in Jamestown this year.

"It’s hard to say whether it’s getting better."

"Why can’t these people?"

Toronto youth dictate major curriculum change Toronto Youth Cabinet led push for financial literacy learning across Ontario JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com When it comes to providing a quality education, those who stand to benefit most - youth - are often left without a voice at the table.

With financial literacy set to earn increased attention in Ontario classrooms, however, students across the province may want to give thanks to the Toronto Youth Cabinet (TYC).

First established 1998 by Toronto City Council, the TYC started out as a way of getting youth involved in municipal decisions. Nearly two decades later, the group has lent a youth voice to issues ranging from housing to transit to employment to education.

With the provincial government’s late March announcement that financial literacy would be one of the major planks of a career studies pilot program, one of the TYC’s main objectives have been achieved.

Students will now get a firmer footing in terms of earning and saving, budgeting and money management.

The TYC’s focus on boosting financial literacy education started in 2016, when Prakash Amarasooriya joined the team and took on the role of school boards lead. He noted that in talking to youth about shortcomings in the education system, the lack of financial literacy education was a common refrain.

"We did research to see how financial literacy was taught in schools - we looked into the Ontario curriculum - and there were mentions of it but it wasn’t really directly addressed," said Amarasoori-

"It was dispersed throughout other courses, but it wasn’t a focus. It felt more like an afterthought."

There had been repeated calls for mandatory money skills to be taught in high school from various groups and politicians.

The TYC also approached the Ministry of Education last summer to raise the issue, but felt their initial overtures were rebuffed.

"What we got from them was that they thought they were doing a good enough job with financial literacy," Amarasooriya said.

Not content with that response, the TYC created a five-phase plan to increase the pressure on the

government to devote more class time to financial literacy. They started with a petition and followed it up with a press release, and the attention those steps garnered was enough that the final phases of their plan - taking the matter to the legislature, conducting workshops and airing videos from youth talking about the importance of financial literacy education - were not necessary.

"Fortunately, the attention we got in the media was enough that we started to see the slight differences in the minister’s statements over the next two to three weeks," said TYC ex-

ecutive director Tom Gleason. "It went from ’We’re confident things are working well’ to ’Changes are coming.’"

Gleason added that the TYC’s actions received nearly unanimous consent from people from across the political spectrum.

Amarasooriya noted financial literacy education will better prepare students for life outside the classroom in ways many core courses may not.

"It will help students take a look at their goals, values and (financial) decision-making and help them understand what their needs are and what their wants are," he said.

"They’ll also get familiar with things like mortgages, financing and leases, or TFSAs and RRSPs. Those things can be confusing or daunting when you don’t really know about them, and this will help students understand them better."

That knowledge will better enable young people to take control of their financial futures, giving them the tools they need to make smarter decisions.

Making the careers course and its associated financial literacy education mandatory will be another big win for students across the province.

"People from disadvan-

taged neighbourhoods will get as much in-school learning about financial literacy as people from affluent neighbourhoods," Amarasooriya said. "And where putting a useful topic in another course was shown to be ineffective, this will make it way more useful to students."

Education Minister Mitzie Hunter said she was happy to hear from the TYC when it approached her with its call for increased financial literacy in schools. Having taken her role in the ministry last June, she was quick to see the importance of such instruction.

"They came to me to talk about ’How do we bring this into schools?’ and I was really pleased to let them know that I was very supportive of this and wanted to see it happen," she said.

Hunter added that she was impressed with the TYC’s commitment and preparation in bringing about change, noting that having engaged youth makes the education system work better not only for the students but for the province as a whole.

"It’s very important to me that I hear (from) students and connect with them on their learning and on their education," she said. "Listening to students and allowing them to share their ideas and their perspectives around their learning is extremely important."

With the TYC and other engaged youth organizations taking on leadership roles, there will surely be no shortage of ideas and perspectives coming the minister’s way.

Shops at Don Mills hosts run/walk for Sick Kids Event also benefits Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario The 13th annual Cadillac Fairview 5K Run/Walk will be held Sunday, April 30 at 1090 Don Mills Rd. Participants will help raise funds for The Hospital for Sick Children and the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO).

The CF 1K Kids Run will start at 9:30 a.m., followed by the CF 5K Run/Walk at

10 a.m.

The run/walk will start and finish in Town Square.

After leaving the Shops at Don Mills via Karl Fraser Road, runners and walkers will travel west on Lawrence Avenue for one kilometre before heading south on the trail for 1.5 kilometres to the turnaround.

Runners and walkers will return the exact same way to Town Square and the finish line.

Only the eastbound curb lane will be closed to traffic on Lawrence Avenue.

The one-kilometre event will take place entirely on the grounds of Shops at Don

Mills. The course is trafficfree and will start and finish in Town Square.

The CF 5K Run/Walk costs $35 for participants aged 13 and older, and $5 for those 12 and younger.

The CF Kids 1K costs $5.

Children five and younger can participate for free.

ate his own dish, but wanted three ingredients to be into his dish: kale, lentils and red peppers.

"The recipe is extremely creative," Pearson said.

"The wonderful thing about working with a chef is that they know how to take the ingredients and put them together, so that you’ve got something healthy and good."

Morris wanted to find different ways to incorporate vegetables into his recipe, so that not only adults, but children can enjoy it as well; he turned one of his required ingredients, kale, into a pesto sauce.

"I try to find creative ways to get my children their nutritional balance," Morris said. "I know if I put a pile of kale leaves on the plate, they’ll push it to the side."

Morris said he’s grateful to be able to contribute to this cause and hopes this campaign will help bring more awareness to the lack of nutrition in food banks.

"Three-sixty and I are very happy to have been asked to be part of this," Morris said, "We’re happy to help the community and we’d love to do more of it."

Top chefs are gathering again this year to contribute recipes to a cookbook that will help the North York Harvest Food Bank (NYHFB).

The Out of the Box: Healthy Family Pasta Meals on a Budget cookbook is sponsored by Catelli Foods and was launched as part of their campaign called Help Us Feed the Hope.

For every share or download of the cookbook and its recipes, Catelli Foods will donate servings of pasta to food banks across Canada.

Morris created his whole-wheat penne and lentil meatballs with lemon and kale pesto recipe with some guided help regarding ingredients from North York-based dietitian and author Liz Pearson.

"I was thinking about summer," Morris said. "If we’re serving this dish to people at that time of the year, it should be seasonal because this is when the food is at its peak. You can’t choose something because you like it. You have to be conscious of the seasons when the ingredients are going to be at their best."

The Scarborough Academic Family Health Team (SAFHT) consists of administrative staff and health professionals: nurse practitioners, registered nurses, a physician assistant, mental health team, dietician, health educator, chiropodist and pharmacist. It also has 21 affiliated family physicians and their office/medical staff. The SAFHT is part of a network of Family Health Teams engaged in primary care along with other dimensions of health care service delivery funded by of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The extended network of health care delivery includes Community Care Access Centres (CCACs) Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs), hospitals, specialists and lab services.

As a provincially incorporated, not-for-profit corporation, SAFHT provides comprehensive primary health care services in an interprofessional setting to the patients of its 21 affiliated physicians.

Funded 100% by the province, the team operates out of 12 locations, nine sites of which are primarily occupied by an affiliated physician practice. The ministry funding is to contractually provide programs focused on patient-centred care in the areas of chronic disease management, health promotion and disease prevention. In early 2016 the rostered and unrostered patients totalled over 33,000; located primarily in eastern Toronto and also spread across the GTA. SAFHT’s physicians who once wholly formed the Board now operate on a mixed model of governance and are seeking an additional community volunteer to join the SAFHT Board of Directors. As a Board Director, you will be responsible for directing the affairs of the organization in accordance with its constituting documents, applicable legislation, government contracts and policies established and communicated to Family Health Teams by the Government of Ontario. Directors would serve for a term of up to three years, subject to the renewal schedule of the by-laws.

Significant experience on a not-for-profit Board of Directors is preferred along with an understanding of health-care administration and a desire to participate in making SAFHT a leading health care organization.
