FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family of a young teenager who drowned while on a school trip to Algonquin Park. C. W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute student Jeremiah Perry, who was in the park as part of a summer school outdoor education program, was swimming with classmates on Tuesday, July 4 in Big Trout Lake when he went underwater and failed to resurface. The body of the 15-year-old was found the following day. "It is with great sadness that we start this fund in order to support the Anderson/Perry family following the loss of their son, Jeremiah Perry," the GoFundMe page reads. "Jeremiah was an amazing young adult who brought laughter and love to his friends and family. He was a compassionate and loving son who cared deeply for his family and friends. He was hardworking, had an outgoing personality. Jeremiah came from Guyana l See JEREMIAH page 16

exist. It was interesting." Sixty-nine per cent of Canadians believe entertainment will be mainly experienced through virtual reality. According to French, Canada is primed and ready to be the leader in the wave of technology that will help better the lives of Canadians and has the opportunity to "compete with the best countries in the world". "I think because of Canada’s really strong education system and foundation, where we have one of the most highly-educated and diverse workforces on the planet, there are a bunch of areas where we really are taking the lead," he said. "There’s a huge opportunity for Canada to take a step forward from a country that’s done really well in education and research and the science side and to start commercializing on this and turn that research into businesses, which will create jobs for Canadians and lead the way on the technology front." Flying cars, one global currency, and humanoid robot helpers are just a few ideas tech experts have predicted for Canada’s future in the next 150 years, and Canadians agree. As part of the What’s Now What’s Next campaign launched by Next Canada, a Toronto-based national non-profit agency helping advance Canadian innovation and entrepreneurship, it asked 75 tech experts to predict the evolution of technology in Canada in the future. Tech experts were asked to envision the future in the next 10-25 years, 75-100 years, and in 150 years in varying sectors included education, banking, transportation, retail, and food.

Ideas like hospitals being fully automated and artificial intelligence being integrated as part of the education system were some of the suggestions mentioned by experts. The other component of the campaign involved surveying 1,200 Canadians about the predictions to get the pulse of their sentiments on whether or not these were things to be excited about or feared, or whether it could truly become a reality, said Jon French, the director of marketing and communications at Next Canada. "When we put the predictions to them and said ’hey do you think this is plausible?’, for example, one prediction that there would be one global currency in the next 50 years and 53 per cent of Canadians ... said they could believe it - that was surprising," said French. "The arrival of autonomous cars, airplanes, and watercrafts were also mentioned and over half of the Canadians surveyed said that within the next 10 years you’re going to see not only driverless vehicles, but things like car ownership will no longer

Adyn balances his academics with a variety of extracurricular activities. He plays electric guitar in two bands and also enjoys playing ball hockey as a member of the Mississauga provincial ball hockey team. He will be attending the University of Toronto in September to study engineering science. • Mackenzie Fijardo achieved an overall average of 100 per cent in the Advanced Placement program at Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School and Regional Arts Centre in Etobicoke. Mackenzie’s community involvement went beyond his school doors. With a passion for science, he volunteered to visit elementary school students and assist teachers with science workshops as they facilitated activities or performed

Baycrest Health Sciences hosts prom for residents Largest group of Holocaust survivors in North America lives at Baycrest They danced, they sang, they hung out with Elvis. Some 300 Baycrest Health Sciences residents and clients attended a 1950s-inspired prom at the Bathurst Street and Hwy. 401 area site on Thursday, July 6, complete with games and an Elvis impersonator. Attendees were encouraged to wear clothing and don hair styles from that era. As home to one of the largest groups of Holocaust survivors in North America, the prom held special meaning as many were not able to attend similar celebrations in their youth. Music therapy also plays an important role for many older adults with a wide range of cognitive abilities, as music can often help people reconnect with moods, emotions and memories of years gone by.

ABOUT US

We must learn to adapt to game-changers It’s long been said the only constant is change. All one needs to do is examine the pace at which new technologies are altering our daily lives to recognize that the age-old phrase is truer now, perhaps, than it has ever been. Consider that in a relatively brief span of time, hailing a taxi, booking a hotel reservation over the phone, and renting a movie at the video store have all become things of the past. Instead, more and more people get a lift via Uber, secure a place to stay through any number of hotel booking websites or Airbnb, and rely on internetbased video streaming services, such as Netflix, to watch films or catch up with their favourite television shows. If you think those innovations are something, buckle up, because many more are on the way. These socalled game-changers are heralds of what professor Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive chairperson of the World Economic Forum, calls "the fourth Industrial Revolution". What will the next wave of innovations look like? Well, experts envision being able to receive your online purchases via drone delivery, having the power to buy plans for an item and 3D-printing it at home, and even visiting a store from the comfort of your home thanks to virtual reality. You can also expect the "sharing economy" to not only persevere, but increase in the future. As much as many of those developments sound exciting, they, and others, possess the potential to cause substantial disruptions for existing industries. For example, the trend toward increased automation will directly impact many of us, with the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship estimating nearly 42 per cent of the tasks Canadians are currently paid to do could be at risk of being replaced by technology. As with any seismic shift, one can view what’s coming as a crisis or an opportunity. And, while it won’t always be easy, it’s likely best to take the latter view as resisting change of this magnitude is most likely futile anyway. "One can decry the loss of the old world, but we’re all having to adapt," professor and former provost at York University Sheila Embleton says. "When we link the best of the old with the new, we will end up with something that’s altogether better." She’s right. We can’t always control what changes and challenges will be thrown at us, but we can control how we react. Like the dinosaurs, our choices will essentially boil down to evolve or else.

Doomed strip plaza is part of a big change Toronto’s suburbs were built around strip plazas, and those plazas, practical though they are, have begun to die. In Northwest Scarborough’s Bridletowne area, a developer is knocking down a nine-unit commercial building and building a stack of 60 townhomes where it stood. "The strip mall is a vision that needs to be replaced," says Marco VanderMaas, the project’s Dutch-born architect. VanderMaas sees BT Towns as part of a wave of intensification that must come. With many city neighbourhoods priced out of reach, there’s a "missing middle" for housing, a gap between detached houses and "boxes in the sky," he

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto says. Meanwhile, land costs for strip malls are up, and many see less business. People drive farther to get their bag of milk. Suburban councillors are often hostile to townhouse developments, because older constituents usually are. Sometimes, clumps of towns bordering single-family subdivisions are accepted grudgingly,

since mid-rise condos seem more threatening. The now-doomed plaza on Bridletowne Circle seems normal enough, with a variety store, cleaners, other useful shops. Unsurprisingly, residents wrote to oppose the project. Wouldn’t this worsen traffic, some asked. A decade ago, longtime Bridletowne homeowners hit the roof when condo towers were proposed nearby at the listless Bridlewood Mall. But it was clear the area, greying and suddenly classified as a "priority" neighbourhood, needed new blood. VanderMaas knows people used to Bridletowne’s layout - single-family homes and towers - will think BT Towns too crowded. He argues the units,

with one to three bedrooms, will bring in more families, and there’s room. Also, neighbourhoods change, and mindsets do too. "I always think more neighbours means a more vital community," says VanderMaas, a devotee of the urbanist writer Jane Jacobs. "Is everybody gonna love it? No." VanderMaas argues citizens are obliged to say what they do want, not just what they don’t. Otherwise, he says, they’re hurting their neighbourhood’s evolution. BT Towns got their zoning amendment. Many like it may follow. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

The King Street Pilot was formally approved by Toronto Council last week, but taxi drivers will receive an exemption from the new regulations. The plan will see King shifted into a transit-first corridor between Bathurst and Jarvis streets to aid streetcar operation, requiring cars to leave the roadway. Council also voted to support Mayor John Tory’s amendment to allow taxis to use the street without restriction during late nights, from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. The pilot is expected to last one year and begin in the fall.

GAME CHANGERS

INNOVATION IS DISRUPTING OUR WORLD KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com Gone are the days of hailing a taxi, phoning in a hotel reservation, lining up for movie tickets and using cash for purchases in a boutique store. Now you can do it all with the touch of a screen thanks to innovations like Uber, Airbnb, Amazon or Netflix - to name a few. Call them the game changers; they’re shaking up society, altering our lives at an exponential rate. "We stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another," predicts professor Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairperson of the World Economic Forum. "The transformation will be unlike anything humankind has experienced before." Digital technology has already fuelled dramatic changes. Now, Schwab says, the "fourth industrial revolution" is on its way, shaped by a fresh new wave of innovation. Here’s a look at how these disrupters could impact our everyday life.

Marc Saltzman’s wife, Kellie, dropped him and his son off at Canada’s Wonderland recently. By the time he realized he’d forgotten his wallet, she was gone. It could have been a disappointing day, but Saltzman, a technology expert and author, had a smartwatch. He paid for the day with a tap of his wrist. Mobile payment is just one way game changers are transforming our lives. Soon, Saltzman says, we

could: • order a product, have it drone-delivered to our door, ID verified by photo and a receipt sent via email. • order plans for a product and create it in our own home with a 3D printer. • don a virtual reality headset or sensor gloves to browse stores and try on clothes at home; or walk through a mall with augmented glasses that overlay digital info about the product and whether it’s cheaper somewhere else.

How we spend our leisure time The travel business has been upended with the influx of online booking sites and rating services like TripAdvisor. Now the sharing economy including Airbnb, VRBO - is chipping away further, leading to disputes over municipal bylaws and local neighbourhoods engulfed by transients and tourists. At the same time, allyou-can eat, buffet-style services are disrupting the en-

tertainment world with services like Spotify and Google Music, ebooks and video-game streaming. Next, Saltzman predicts, cars with data plans will link you to the strongest nearby tower, streaming content via an antenna atop your car.

How we get around Speaking of cars, do you really need one anymore? Uber - connecting drivers and riders - and Zipcars renting cars by the mile or minute - allow us to travel a la carte. And if you do own a car, you may not need someone behind the wheel in a few years. This leads to new possibilities, says Saltzman. "We can make money with our car while we’re not using it - letting it drive other people around. Things are going to get pretty exciting." But not everyone’s excited. The trucking industry is one of many traditional industries sounding alarms over upheaval and job loss.

MORE COVERAGE: Would you rent your parking space? See page 10 Where we work A fleet of autonomous trucks, driving across Europe last April, gave a hint of what’s ahead. Andrew McAfee, co-founder of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy, warns that trucking could be one of many industries where traditional middle-class jobs are at risk. In its report Age of Disruption, Deloitte Canada warns the majority of Canadian businesses are not prepared for looming rapid advances in key technologies and will not survive. Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship reports that nearly 42 per cent of the tasks Canadians are currently paid to do can be automated using existing technology. But some, like Newmarket business owner Attila Vinczer, are optimistic about our ability to adapt. Repetitive assembly jobs in his tool-and-die plants are moving toward automation, but he still views himself as a job creator.

"I still hire, but the jobs are different and require different skills like computer expertise and ability to maintain the machines, work websites and social media." No one aims for a hollowed-out plant that runs itself, he adds. "There’s a responsibility among business owners to ensure the workforce is prepared and adaptable, because if no one’s able to make a living in this brave new world, if everything’s automated, who will buy the products?"

How we adapt How does one cope, then, in a world where everything is changing? Experts say the "soft skills" will be essential, but Steve Joordens, psychology professor at the University of Toronto, warns those are the skills we are most in danger of losing, as we isolate in our silos of convenience, plugged into smartphones, live-streaming individual movie choices, interacting in superficial ways on social media, no longer chatting with cashiers or strangers in bank-teller queues. Kids, especially, aren’t learning skills like small talk and conversational

turn-taking, he says. Older generations may worry about how they’ll keep up, while younger ones struggle with expectations. Professors lament that students expect them to be available 24-7; employers say young new hires expect to be promoted to management in two years because that’s how quickly the rest of the world works. From smarthomes to smartphones, we are eager to trade off privacy and security in exchange for convenience - but is that really so smart? Joordens suggests we should prepare ourselves for this fast-changing world by forcing ourselves to slow down and carving out regular digital-free times for "mindfulness." Sheila Embleton, a professor and former provost at York University, agrees. "Those things that have always stood people in good stead will continue to: critical thinking, being adaptable to change, able to have good relationships. "One can decry the loss of the old world, but we’re all having to adapt. When we link the best of the old with the new, we will end up with something that’s altogether better."

Known as the Airbnb of parking, the Toronto-based firm Rover Parking is changing the way people think about where they park their car. The cellphone program has a similar concept to Airbnb. It pairs drivers looking to park in the city with an unused parking space in a nearby driveway for a fee that’s 20 to 30 per cent less than a nearby lot. The app is the brain child of Torontonians Grant Brigden and Tom Wootton. The duo has been running the company for just over a year and a half. Although the model is still in its infancy, it’s already had more than 50,000 downloads and roughly 2,000 driveways on board and offering up parking in Toronto. "We’re really focused on driving supply. The key is

to get people to understand that there’s not an easier way out there to make some extra money without doing much," said Brigden. "Some of our top spots are making enough money to even pay for their car lease. "They’re making $400500 a month, which is more than their vehicle (payments). The driveway you have could essentially pay for the car you drive." The app builds on the popular notion of the sharing economy, which has people finding new ways to profit from things they aren’t using on a regular basis by renting it out or sharing with others. Those interested in posting their driveway or spot simply have to sign up, either on the website or through a downloadable app, list their spot, provide a picture of the space and a detailed description. Then those looking for parking can open up the map pro-

vided on the app and head over to the desired space. As a user offering the space, you also have complete flexibility about when the parking is available and for how long. There’s even the option to check out on average how much income space in your neighbourhood can make in a month. The app has expanded to Montreal and parts of the United States. The company is working with the mayor of Barrie, Jeff Lehan, on a pilot program to help find a technical solution to the city’s parking problem by listing residential and commercial parking spaces that sit empty. The program could stop the city from building costly parking garages with taxpayer money "We’re looking to change the style structure of mobility parking that people are so accustomed to," he said.

Educator wins PM award Tanya Farzaneh, an educator at Seneca’s Early Childhood Education Lab School, has been awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence based on her work at the college. Dr. Geng Tan, MP for Don Valley North, recently presented Farzaneh with the award for connecting children to nature by incorporating the environment into her lessons as "a third teacher." She has helped lead a series of naturebased activities for children aged 18 to 36 months which included teaching them about the entire life cycle of plants and the environment as well as planting and harvesting vegetables. The Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education honours up to 10 exceptional educators across Canada for their achievements in education, as well as their

"Tanya’s achievement and dedication shines through in her work to cultivate a creative learning environment for her students," said Tan, adding that she "embodies the best

of the critical work that our educators do every day, giving our children the skills to succeed, opening the doors to a brighter future for everyone." Farzaneh is a graduate of Seneca’s early childhood education and honours bachelor of child development programs.

Set bar higher, says valedictorian From June 23 to 29, more than 7,500 students graduated from Seneca College. Degrees, diplomas, certificates and postgraduate certificates were awarded as part of 14 ceremonies. North York resident Wesley O’Hearn was selected to represent his graduating class as valedictorian. In high school, he knew he wanted to attend post secondary, but did not know exactly what he wanted to study. Instead of enrolling immediately, he decided to work full-time, promising himself that that he would only return when he was ready and not just for the sake of it. O’Hearn worked for six years before enrolling in Seneca’s liberal arts university transfer diploma program in September 2015. With courses in a variety of humanities and social science disciplines, the program provides students with the opportunity to complete a diploma and a bachelor of arts degree in as little as four years. After earning a perfect

North York resident Wesley O’Hearn is presented with his framed diploma by Riaz Saloojee (left), Acting Chair, School of Arts and Science; and David Agnew (right), Seneca President. GPA in his first semester and quickly becoming a leader in his program, O’Hearn’s confidence and ambitions grew. He capped off his chapter at Seneca as a valedictorian. "My message to everyone in this room is never doubt your abilities," O’Hearn said in his valedictory address. "Never stop pushing yourself and never settle. Always look to set the bar higher. No matter where you are in life, you can always achieve more if you set your mind to it. The

world is yours to conquer." O’Hearn went from earning 50s and 60s in high school to graduating from Seneca with a 4.0 GPA. In the fall, he will be attending the University of Toronto to study psychology and anthropology. He joins the ranks of many distinguished Seneca alumni from the last 50 years, including more than 11,338 business owners; 2,445 CEOs; 11,037 presidents and vice-presidents; and 9,460 professional artists and designers.

Pam McConnell was a good councillor, and a good person. That might seem a redundant thing to say, in the week after the 71-year-old councillor for Ward 28 (Toronto Centre-Rosedale) died. Her goodness as a person was evident - manifestly evident - in the loving tributes that came from her former colleagues, from those whose lives she touched. Her goodness as a councillor is evident in her legacy in policy at the city and in the urban form of her downtown ward. Still, both observations are worth repeating. Because she was good - and while goodness is not uncommon in those who go into public service, it is far from universal. Pam McConnell spent a lifetime setting the bar, and setting it high. As a journalist, I first encountered McConnell as the dust was settling in the forced amalgamation of To-

DAVID NICKLE The City ronto. She had prevailed in a rough-and-tumble election where wards were represented by two councillors, and she shared her ward with Jack Layton. She’d been at it for awhile - a city councillor in the old City of Toronto since 1994, and for 12 years before that a trustee on the old Toronto Board of Education. But, next to Layton and Olivia Chow and Howard Moscoe and the other higher-profile members of the 56-member Toronto Council’s NDP caucus, McConnell was easy to overlook. For a while.

Over her career on Toronto Council, McConnell got a great deal done. In St. James Town, amid the concentration of highrise low-income housing, there is a library and a community centre that would not likely be there were it not for McConnell’s dogged, decade-long fight to put one there. Regent Park, Toronto’s oldest public housing neighbourhood, might not have undergone its massive reconstruction into a mixed-income neighbourhood without her advocacy. In 2004, McConnell took over the chair of the Toronto Police Services Board during the tumultuous departure of Chief Julian Fantino, hired Bill Blair to replace him, and also pushed much-needed reforms into the way police dealt with sexual assaults. Pam McConnell did good work, and she was good while she did it. We’ll miss her, now she’s gone.

SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID!

| North York Mirror | Thursday, July 13, 2017

One of the good ones

A remarkable new hearing aid is now available and getting rave reviews from retirees! It is easy to use, looks great in the ear, and marks a MAJOR advancement in hearing technology!

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make– even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to

reduce the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-ofthe-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

looking for a bright future. Jeremiah will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts." The fundraising goal is $25,000, which will help pay for expenses resulting from his death, along with setting up a memorial fund in Jeremiah’s name. As of Tuesday, July 11, about $3,500 had been raised. The teen was part of a group of 33 students, including students from Westview Centennial Secondary School, who arrived in Algonquin Park on Sunday, July 2. Toronto District School Board (TDSB) spokesperson Ryan Bird previously told the Mirror students had to pass a swim test prior to the trip. In a statement on Wednesday, July 5, TDSB director John Malloy expressed condolences for Jeremiah’s family. "Our thoughts are with Jeremiah’s family and friends during this tremendously difficult time," he said. Malloy noted the summer outdoor education course and program has been "operating for a number of years with an excellent safety record."

Jeremiah Perry drowned July 4 at Algonquin Park. "We know all staff involved are committed to reviewing each and every aspect of this tragedy to assure ourselves and our communities of our safety procedures," he said. "It’s important to note that we will not be able to make any conclusions with regards to what happened until Ontario Provincial Police can complete their investigation and the TDSB has had an opportunity to speak with those involved. In the meantime, our focus remains on supporting the family and all those impacted by this tragic event and on bringing all students and staff home as quickly as possible." day, July 5 and Thursday, July 6. In a followup statement two days later, Malloy said the OPP and chief coroner are investigating the circumstances surrounding Jeremiah’s death and the TDSB will not be commenting further at this point. "We can confirm, however, that this excursion required that students pass a canoe trip swim test and canoe trip skills test to participate and that students who were unable to pass the tests were not to go on the trip," Malloy said, adding, "for excursions of this nature, it is TDSB practice to follow safety guidelines as set by the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association." When you throw the wrong items (like clothing, curtains, blankets, etc.) in your Blue Bin, they can get tangled in sorting machines, damage equipment and cause workplace injuries at the recycling facility. Last year, an estimated 45,000 tonnes of garbage was incorrectly put into recycling. That’s a big problem you can help fix.
