Mystery adventures and ghost tours help boost attendance DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Dark creeps up quickly - quicker than you might think as the sun goes down on the accursed pioneer village of Black Creek. That at least was our experience, stepping out of the cramped apple cellar having solved one of a series of devilish riddles to unlock a new incantation to drive out the evil that had imprisoned the stout villagers - and we six - in the midst of a 90minute race against time. When we’d gone in, the sun was painting the quaint rooftops of the North York historical village a brilliant gold. Coming out, we were in shadow-the only light came from the three lanterns we had with us, and the occasional flash of eerie green or hellish red, from flames carried by distant black-robed figures. No doubt about it: It was getting real. Of course, it wasn’t real. Metroland Media Toronto photographer Justin Greaves and I were taking part in a game produced by Secret City Adventures, a Torontobased company that specializes in mounting a flavour of so-called "Escape Room" scenarios. Some of these can be panic-inducing horror-show ordeals, but according to event producer Leonardo
Dell’anno, that’s not quite Secret City’s model. "We don’t scare people," he said prior to the event’s beginning. "Our games are more narrative-driven, story driven. This is in fact our first scarier game." This is also the group’s largest - in the past, they’ve produced more intimate games at Casa Loma, in partnership with the Murdock Mysteries television series. This one, Where Dark Things Dwell, makes use of all of the buildings at Black Creek Pioneer Village, and can accommodate as many as 60 participants, divided into 10 groups of six. They are the latest, and arguably most elaborate, addition to the Toronto and Region Conservation-operated Black Creek Pioneer Village’s After Dark programming, which began last year with a well-received Pioneer Village Ghost Tour. Where Dark Things Dwell is this year’s showpiece, but it’s not the only thing up the village’s sleeve. There is also an axe-throwing group, which operates an archery dodge ball game. According to Black Creek’s Guest Services and Historic Brewery Supervisor Geri Smith, the whole program is part of an effort to boost attendance at the attraction that may have stalled. "We think Black Creek Pioneer Village is a fantastic site and we want to expose more people to it," she said. "What we believe is when people are engaged to come out they’ll appreciate it and come back. We

Where Dark Things Dwell is certainly a cool thing to do. And whatever Dell’anno says to the contrary, it is more than a bit
promptly chased by white-masked, blackcloaked ghouls into a barn, where the mysterious, robe-clad William lets us know just how bad things are. The village is under a curse, and looking at the handstamps we all received on the way in - we are too. We have 90 short minutes to do something about it. The first group to collect and solve a series of puzzles strewn throughout the village, gets to save it. It would spoil the fun to go into too much detail, but suffice it to say our group almost did that, no doubt because of the actually smart people we were teamed with: brotherand-sister team Jeremy and Kailey Steinhausen, and heroic, code-breaking pair Blake Ruelens and Rebecca Gieringer. Together, we saved the skin of a hyperventilating millwright, tested the patience of a trapped cidermaker, stared down white-masked ghouls, disturbed at least one raccoon, and of course solved anagrams that would have stumped Alan Turing. We would have won it, too - but with the best intentions, we spent our last precious minutes trying to solve a brainstumping riddle, rather than giving chase to... But that would be telling. Where Dark Things Dwells opens to the public July 28 for two shows a night. FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Less than two months after opening, the Westminster-Branson Primary Care Clinic is closing. The walk-in clinic opened June 1 inside the Branson Ambulatory Care Centre near Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue, replacing the former Urgent Care Centre (UCC) which area residents had rallied at Queen’s Park to keep open. The UCC managed urgent illness or injury that isn’t life-threatening, such as broken bones and cuts. The Westminster-Branson Primary Care Clinic, which operated Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and was staffed by one physician, will close Friday, July 28 due to "low patient volumes," North York General Hospital, which operates the site, said in a message on its website Monday, July 24. The letter noted al-
though most patients who visited the UCC had a family physician, many didn’t have same-day primary care access. As an interim measure, NYGH established the Westminster-Branson Primary Care Clinic to provide additional resources while a comprehensive primary care model was being established, the letter said. "Despite repeated promotion of the clinic’s services - in both printed material such as posters and pamphlets, as well as through our online communication channels there has been minimal community uptake," it said. The letter went on to say the clinic has seen an average of six patients a day, most of who live outside the catchment area. "Due to these low patient volumes, we are ceasing operations at the clinic as of July 28, 2017," the letter says, noting NYGH is working with the Central

clinics in a three kilometre radius of the Branson Ambulatory Care Centre." NYGH announced in March it will close the Branson Ambulatory Care Centre by 2019 after opting not to renew its lease from Advent Health Care Corporation. Services from the Branson site will be transferred to NYGH’s main campus at Leslie Street and Hwy. 401. Kenneth Schafer, cochair of the Branson Community Action Group, said he’s not surprised the Westminster-Branson Primary Care Clinic is closing. "It really wasn’t promoted in any way, shape, or form," he said. "It did not provide any urgent care. Was it premature to close? No. Who’s going to outcry about this if no one went to it anyway? All it goes to show is the solution North York General Hospital came up with did not consider the needs of the community."

Toronto needs help dealing with legalized weed Drugs cost money. This is a universal truth: whether it’s the legal kind like alcohol or tobacco, or the banned stuff like cocaine or heroin, or, for now, marijuana, a habit is going to take a chunk out of anyone’s paycheque in addition to their life expectancy. As it is with us as frail individuals, so it is with the governments we elect, when we make the choice to turn on the tap - or light the pipe - of legalized intoxicants. And when legalized marijuana becomes a reality in Canada next year, it’s going to cost money. Last week, Mayor John Tory pointed this out, in the latest of a series of letters to Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. Tory made the point as he was insisting that Toronto be heavily-involved in any of the decisions regarding implementing that legalization. Much of those decisions will come at a provincial level - notably, how and where the drug is sold, what the minimum age will be for purchasing marijuana, and so on. For Toronto, it’s particularly important to regulate where and how marijuana is sold. We know here from bitter experience with illegal dispensaries that relatively unregulated sales will go badly. The province should make sure that the sale of marijuana takes place well away from schools and community centres, and other places where young people and the vulnerable congregate. Although Tory didn’t mention it in his letter, the federal government would also do well to take a cue from Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen De Villa, who earlier this year wrote a report calling for the immediate decriminalization of marijuana. De Villa noted that many of the problems that the city is having now with illegal dispensaries would go away with an immediate legalization and subsequent regulation. But that is not to say that legalization, now or next year, will solve all of our problems. Tory notes that Dr. De Villa and Toronto’s health department will be very busy as marijuana use becomes more widespread, dealing with the very real public health issues that arise from use, and inevitable overuse, of the drug. The city will inevitably be involved in providing inspections and regulating locations. Police will take on new and potentially costly roles. Tory’s suggestion that the cost of those services come out of provincial tax on marijuana is a sensible one. The fallout of legalization will cost money, and it only makes sense that those who choose to use foot the bill.

Scarborough’s shoreline belongs to everyone The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has a collective headache coming this Friday as they vote on a new shoreline park. The Scarborough Waterfront Project will be monumental if it’s ever built. People will go to Bluffers Park Beach, and realize they can walk or bike from there to Pickering. They could visit Guild Park, Highland Creek, or the Rouge River. Most of the park already exists, You walk down Bellamy Ravine, see Marlene Hilton Moore’s steel statue, Passages, and the road below the Scarborough Bluffs stretches east. There’s landslide danger, especially this year, but the water’s blue, the bluffs lovely. People, most-
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto ly local, go every weekend. But now that the TRCA wants to finish the park spending perhaps $170 million - self-appointed defenders of the bluffs and beaches call the plan "malevolent," saying it’ll destroy sandy beaches "teaming with rare flora and fauna." On Friday, the TRCA board will listen as they paint their cause green. Hardening a shoreline

with stones to stop erosion doesn’t wipe out ecosystems. I walked Port Union Waterfront Park, which would connect to this one, after it opened. A mink darted across rocks. I saw killdeer, a gopher. I heard green frogs. The place was artificial, and hardened, but not devoid of life. The Authority says the two sandy beaches in question, one of which it will preserve, can only be accessed now by crossing private lands on homemade paths trampling sensitive vegetation. The new park will give visitors safe, legal access. But access shouldn’t just be for the few. There’s something unspoken in Scarborough: people living north of
Kingston Road aren’t supposed to go south of it. There’s no TTC bus to Bluffers. In summer, the lots fill. It’s a favourite ticketing spot. Legal parking anywhere around the bluffs is scarce, as if the city wants to discourage visitors. We hear about selfieseeking yahoos on the bluffs, the litter and campfires. But many Torontonians never go, and should. Scarborough’s shoreline and bluffs doesn’t just belong to people who live there. They belong to me, and they belong to everyone in Greater Toronto who wants to wander through public land. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

COMMUNITY
Sistema makes call out for used instruments HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Dust off the old violin and drag that cello out of the basement. It’s time to give those unwanted instruments a new lease on life, with the children in music education programs. Sistema Toronto, a charitable organization running free after school music programs, launched its first community call for instruments in June with its inaugural instrument drive. "This is the first time we’ve done a really big drive like this to reach out to the community for instruments. We know there are a lot of really great instruments in the city, just sitting in cupboards not being played or used," said Christie Gray, the executive director of Sistema Toronto. "And we know there are a lot of kids in our program who would love those instruments and would put them to good use and bring them back to life."
Donors will receive a tax receipt for their charitable gift of gently used or new instruments. Sistema is also willing to pick up the instrument from your home. Sistema offers free music lessons to students at four schools in priority neighbourhoods in the city - Yorkwoods Public School near Jane and Finch, Parkdale P.S., Military Trail P.S. and St. Martin de Porres Catholic School. Students receive 10 hours a week of music education, which runs during the school year. Each child receives a string or percussion instrument and is fed a nutritious snack, all free of charge. The goal is to collect 50 instruments for the 50 new kids joining the music program across the city in the fall. It’s looking for violins, violas, cellos and percussion instruments of any kind. So far they’ve received five violins and one full-sized cello from the community. "We’ve really been on the hunt for the bigger in-

ments is a "lofty goal," but she’s optimistic that people will come forward to donate the instruments they’re not using. They’ve often received a few instru-
ments here and there from families in the community. They have also had a partnership with Yamaha Music over the years. Although Sistema also fun-
draises for new instruments, which they purchase at a discounted rate from Yamaha Music, it can add up with each instrument costing between $500 and $1,000, she said. "They (Yamaha Music) have donated new instruments to us, which has been incredible as part of their community outreach program and they helped us for the first three years of the program, but they can’t do that forever," Gray said. The instrument drive comes to a close Sept. 12, the first day of its 2017-18 programming. "We’re hopeful that it (the instrument drive) will help the kids in need and give them the sense that their community is out there supporting them," Gray added. "Kids need to know there are people out there to help them and support them in everything they do." Instruments can also be dropped off at Sistema Toronto’s office at 3300 Yonge Street, Suite 210.
Jeremiah Perry remembered
insidetoronto.com
Vigil was a chance for community to grieve together A community mourned the loss of a young life ended too soon. Family, friends and school staff gathered at C.W. Jeffreys Collegiate Institute last Friday night for a candle light vigil to remember 15-year-old Jeremiah Perry, a teen who drowned on a school trip to Algonquin Park. The vigil outside of Perry’s high school brought together loved ones to remember him and celebrate his life. The vigil gave the community a chance to grieve together. Perry was laid to rest on Monday. Social workers were also available on site for any students who needed support.
Perry, who was in the park as part of a summer school outdoor education program, was reportedly swimming with classmates Tuesday, July 4 in Big Trout Lake when he went underwater and failed to resurface. His body was found the following day. The Toronto District School Board is still investigating Perry’s death and said in a statement released Thursday, that it’s in the process of interviewing students and volunteers as well as staff who went on the trip and authorized the excursion. Those who conducted swim tests are also being interviewed and all related swim-test documentation reviewed. The TDSB is also reviewing practices and procedures for "high-care" activities such as swimming and canoeing.

Jeremiah Perry’s mother Melissa Perry is flanked by two of his siblings, Tanya and Marion, as they join the memorial and candlelight vigil held for Jeremiah last friday at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate. Jeremiah died July 4 while on a school trip to Algonquin Park.

SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID!
| North York Mirror | Thursday, July 27, 2017
Historical interpreters Sarah Fairley, left, Claire Ricci and Michael Shelbourn prepare for tea time at Gibson House Museum in the file photo from 2014.
A remarkable new hearing aid is now available and getting rave reviews from retirees! It is easy to use, looks great in the ear, and marks a MAJOR advancement in hearing technology!
At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make– even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to
reduce the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!
Actual plane may differ.
Now providing FREE, no obligation hearing tests! From our previous guests: “Amazing holiday...modern luxury from start to finish.” ”So easy and stress-free to fly from our local airport!”

Notice of Commencement and Public Engagement Barrie Rail Corridor Expansion Transit Project Assessment Process Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is working to transform the way the region moves by building a fast, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and Simcoe County. Over the next ten years, Metrolinx is transforming the existing GO rail system to deliver a whole new rapid transit experience to your community. Part of this plan is to bring frequent and reliable service to communities along the Barrie rail corridor. With more frequent train service you’ll have more options to get you where you need to go. The Project Current plans include electrified, all-day, two-way service every 15 minutes to Aurora as well as peak, midday, evening and weekend GO Train service to Allandale Waterfront GO Station. The service increase will be phased in over 10 years while Metrolinx builds additional infrastructure. To support this service increase, Metrolinx is proposing the following: • Provision of a second track between Lansdowne Avenue in the City of Toronto to Allandale Waterfront GO Station in the City of Barrie; • Upgrades to existing GO Stations along the corridor: Rutherford, Maple, King City, Aurora, Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Bradford, Barrie South and Allandale Waterfront; • Upgrades to existing structures within the corridor including bridges and culverts; and • A new train layover facility within the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury for overnight storage of trains. The Process Metrolinx is assessing the environmental impacts of the Barrie Rail Corridor Expansion (BRCE) Project in accordance with the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings (made under the Environmental Assessment Act). York Centre MPP Monte Kwinter, who is the oldest MPP in Ontario history, will not seek re-election in 2018, he announced Thursday, July 20. Kwinter, 86, will retire after the June provincial election next year. "It has been a distinct honour to serve my community in the Legislature over the past thirty-two years," Kwinter said in a statement. "I am proud of what we accomplished during that time in my riding, and it has been a privilege to serve under three Liberal premiers." Kwinter was first elected to the Legislature in 1985, serving as minister of consumer and commercial relations, minister of financial institutions and minister of industry, trade and technology in the government of former premier David Peterson. Under former premier Dalton McGuinty, Kwinter served as minister of community safety and correctional services and solicitor general and then as chair of the Ontario Investment Trade Advisory Council. Under the current provincial government, he initially served as parliamentary assistant to the minister of citizenship and immigration. Kwinter presently serves as parliamentary assistant to the minister of international trade and chair of the Ontario Investment Trade Advisory Council. "I remain as passionate about my work as ever and am proud of the progressive policies this government is enacting to build Ontario up," Kwinter said, adding "the time has come to let the next generation serve, and I look forward to offering my support to our future York Centre Liberal MPP." In a statement, Wynne said, "Monte’s representation for his constituency, for the Jewish community, and his stalwart example to MPPs of all stripes is a testament to his character. I know he will retire as a beloved member of the Legislature and a mentor to many." A constituency office employee of Kwinter said the MPP would not be commenting further, and confirmed he will stay on as MPP for York Centre until the next election. Prior to public life, Kwinter operated a commercial real estate firm. He has also been vice-president of the Ontario College of Art, editorial director of a publishing firm, and an industrial designer. A nomination date for the riding will be announced at a later date.

Rupram maintained a 4.0 grade point average in the child and youth care program while raising a 10year-old daughter by herself. As a peer tutor in the learning centre, she started a workshop assisting some 40 students in her program. The workshops provided study tips, mock exams and advice to help her peers with exam preparation. Rupram volunteers with several organizations including Metrac, which works to fight violence against women and children. “As a child growing up in Guyana, I watched my mother welcome a homeless woman into our home, feed her and give her food to take with her,” Rupram said in a release. “I was taught to think, ‘How can I give more value and bring more meaning into everything I do?’ I am consciously aware that one person can have an impact and make a difference, and I chose to be that person.” Rupram plans to pursue a bachelor of arts in child and youth care at Ryerson University in the fall.
Expect the Unexpected One of the lessons I’ve learned in life is that each day can hold new wonder. I’ve never found this to be more true than at Delmanor. I can enjoy the lifestyle I’ve become accustomed to over the years, including my own interests and spending time with dear friends. But I can also learn new things, have new experiences and develop meaningful relationships with people very much like myself. At Delmanor I look forward to embracing what each day has to offer. Discover more at Delmanor.

Trouble Hearing? Did you know that 1 in 5 adult Canadians have hearing loss? The prevalence increases with age, with 47% of Canadians over the age of 60 experiencing hearing loss. Unfor tunately, denial, fear and embarrassment prevent many Canadians from seeking the help they need. Hearing loss can be so gradual that others may notice a problem before you do, and untreated hearing loss can contribute to depression, social isolation and other health issues. Luckily, early detection and treatment can reduce some of these effects. Many Canadians who wear hearing aids report an improvement in their ability to communicate with others, respond to auditory stimuli, and enjoy simple, everyday sounds that make life rich – sounds we often take for granted.
A remarkable new hearing aid is now available and getting rave reviews from retirees! It is easy to use, looks great in the ear, and marks a MAJOR advancement in hearing technology!
At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers– hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce the strain that effortful-listening
puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments.
Now providing FREE, no obligation hearing tests! Call now or visit ListenUpCanada.com
North York 330 Steeles Avenue West Call Elizabeth at 1-855-565-8842 tested.
