Shelley Raymond fought to create this shared ownership home in Bracebridge for her dad and other seniors. She owns a company called Solterra Co-housing and plans to open more shared ownership homes to meet the needs of a growing number of seniors.

announced what we were doing I could do it legally, all I had to do was convince others. That was problematic," Raymond said. She won the legal challenges at a huge cost, but her goal was never just one house. "I knew we could do it across Canada. If I was having those problems 10 years ago, I knew the numbers would increase substantially as we moved
forward," Raymond said. Demand for shared home ownership is picking up substantially. Raymond helped create co-housing projects in Brechin, Port Perry, and Guelph. was born. Raymond has a background in real estate, her husband is a talented carpenter, and her dad was a top planner in Canada. They renovated the Bracebridge home and four seniors moved in, splitting ownership between them. But it wasn’t over. The plan sparked an uphill battle with the municipality, planners, lawyers and retirement homes. "I was pretty sure when I

fund their own retirement. This will require innovation, planning, and bylaw and zoning changes. In this series, Metroland examines four options: cohousing with a stranger, cohousing with family, retiring up north in Elliot Lake and renovating your home to add accessible features with help from government grants. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) released a policy discussion paper in 2016 to recognize that the municipal sector is at the forefront of developing age-friendly communities, including affordable housing. Michael Jacek, a senior policy adviser, said AMO hasn’t come up with specific recommendations like shared home ownership, or co-housing. And they haven’t discussed bylaw and policy changes that may be required. "We’ve been operating more at a high-level to encourage people to do the age-friendly community planning. Creative solutions like that may be the result of some of these community plans," Jacek said. Urban planner John Lewis, an associate professor with the University of Waterloo’s school of planning, said there are municipalities, developers, and community groups facing the wave head on. He helped develop the province’s age-friendly planning guide. Lewis said top developers are leading the way with innovative housing solutions. "Once they have proven the market potential for that kind of housing stock, then generally the rest of the developers will follow suit," he said. Lewis said municipalities and community residents shouldn’t wait for the province to take a lead. Solutions will be found in grassroots initiatives, like Solterra Co-housing Ltd. "The feet on the ground literally consists of people who are residents of the communities driving these initiatives forward," Lewis said.

n unstoppable flood is headed our way. Ontario’s senior population is rising as baby boomers turn 65. Within 25 years, the number of seniors is projected to double to 4.6 million. At that time, one in every four people in this province will be a senior. While this massive wave of seniors has long been predicted, we are still ill prepared to provide housing to meet their needs. Muskoka resident Shelley Raymond encountered this problem 10 years ago while exploring options for her parents. "I found pretty much nothing outside of a retirement home, or long-term care, which are all booked to the nines. And hugely expensive," she said. The average monthly cost in an Ontario retirement home is $3,526, but you can pay more than $6,000 depending on where you live, states a 2017 seniors’ housing report by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. As your health declines, you’ll fork over more money for added care. "Retirement homes, in most cases, are profit-based and when you run out of money they will kick you out," Raymond said. "It’s already happening over and over again." Raymond was determined to find an alternative. Due to declining health, her mom moved into long-term care. Her dad couldn’t afford to stay in the family home, but refused to give up his independence. And Raymond worried he would outlive his money in a retirement home. Because Raymond’s grandfather died at an early age, his son chose living life to the fullest over saving for retirement. The responsibility to find an answer for her dad fell at Raymond’s feet because her two siblings lived far away. Raymond was crying about her plight to a friend in a Muskoka restaurant when a solution was born. The pair was talking about shared home ownership. The idea came to Raymond after she looked worldwide for an option that could give her dad independence, affordability, and social interaction. "A man sitting in the restaurant overheard me and he walked over and said ‘You can use my house because I have the same problem,’" Raymond said. Solterra Co-housing Ltd.

Metroland Reports
Four alternative housing options for Ontario seniors Metroland Media explored four housing options for seniors: co-housing with a stranger, cohousing with family, retiring in Elliot Lake and renovating to add accessible features with help from government grants. 1. GO NORTH When Barrie’s Annamarie Sugar and her husband, Don Ough, began searching for a place to enjoy retirement, they wanted a small, quiet community with affordable housing costs. The hunt took them to Elliot Lake between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie "Barrie was a nice small town when we moved there," Sugar said. "Now, it’s just too big, too noisy, too many people." Sugar and her husband aren’t alone in choosing the community, thanks to a marketing campaign aimed at attracting retirees.

FULL HOUSE For 25 years, as he and his wife, Donna, were raising their three children, Matthew Penstone’s widowed mother-in-law, Alice, lived with the family. And then Penstone’s father, George, also moved into the family’s Aurora home. Six years ago, Penstone’s daughter, Corrine, asked if she and her partner, Steven Gagnon, could move in to save money for a home. They also revealed they were expecting twins. The boys grew up in their grandparents’ house before the family moved to their own home. While there are challenges to having a multigenerational household, Penstone said the benefits have far outweighed the adjustments for his family. Read more at tiny-

4. FUTURE RENOVATIONS Sandra and Dan Sexton are doing the kind of work on their North York home that usually comes much later in life. In their 40s, the couple is working with Ronny Wiskin, a specialist in home renovation for accessibility, through the Toronto-based Med+ Home Healthcare company. The company assists homeowners to modify environments using universal design principles - a seven-point checklist that balances esthetics and comfort with accessibility for people who might be confined to a wheelchair, or have other mobility issues. "It’s the design of products and environments that are usable by people of all abilities," Wiskin said. Read more at tinyurl.com/seniorstsunamiaccessible.

ABOUT US
No time for red tape on housing Earlier this year, Statistics Canada released data from the 2016 census that indicated a long predicted, but nonetheless startling change had occurred in our country’s demographics. "From 2011 to 2016, Canada registered the largest increase in the proportion of seniors since Confederation. This acceleration of population aging is the result of the first baby boomers reaching the age of 65," StatsCan reported. "For the first time, the share of seniors (16.9 per cent) the share they represent of the total Canadian population exceeded the share of children (16.6 per cent). The increase in the proportion of seniors from 2011 to 2016 was the largest observed since 1871 - a clear sign that Canada’s population is aging at a faster pace." In our news feature Senior Tsunami on insidetoronto.com, Metroland Media looked at this change and its implications on housing for the average senior. We defined average as the range from having no additional income from a company pension or RRSPs (surviving solely on CPP and OAS benefits), to having a retirement pension or savings. In short, we focused on housing solutions for the middle-class senior; the one who can’t afford the average monthly cost of $3,526 for an Ontario retirement home (in the GTA, it is more than $4,700), but does not qualify for government-assisted housing. We also used a projection by the province’s ministry of finance that shows the senior population in much of central Ontario will more than double in the next 25 years. The results were frightening. Although we have watched the baby boomers ascend the population triangle year after year, we are ill-prepared to provide housing alternatives to match their income level. Several in-depth reports by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation have forewarned of the impending crisis, but little in the form of solutions have taken shape. The province has been silent. In fact, we believe we are in a too-little, too-late situation for the Ontario government to show leadership on the issue of senior housing. We no longer have the luxury of time to meander the red tape of government. What we need are community-based, grassroots solutions. Ontario could offer surplus land or closed schools for senior housing developments. Municipalities, regional councils and provincial programs must collaborate to eliminate barriers, such as zoning and building bylaws, to pave the way for these alternatives. We need to work together to resolve this crisis. And with Food Banks Canada saying 45,000 seniors across the country rely on food banks each month, we need to start today.

It may be a long time before we’re over amalgamation It has been a long time since amalgamated Toronto’s first day - nearly 20 years - and there are no doubts some who think it’s time we got over it. Pity those poor forward-thinking cynics. Last week at Toronto council’s October meeting, Janet Davis rose to remind us that ... well ... that perhaps we need reminding. The Beaches-East York councillor was sponsoring a request from the East York Historical Society and the East York Foundation to please include the East York logo on any street signs that might be replaced. Of all the former municipalities, Davis reminded her colleagues, East York was "special."
DAVID NICKLE The City There was a lot of heckling from councillors who noted properly that their former municipalities were special too. But Davis has a point. East York, it could be argued, was at once the least and the greatest of the former Metropolitan Toronto municipalities. It was geographically small; small enough that it couldn’t support even a

single enclosed shopping mall, small enough that it didn’t even get to be a city it was a borough. But as signs at its irregular borders indicated, it was "Canada’s Only Borough." Its citizens were fiercely proud of it. When it came time to vote in illegal, Catalan-style referenda about amalgamation, East Yorkers voted ’no’ in greater numbers, and if anyone had been measuring it, surely greater volume. When it failed, the borough’s mayor, Michael Prue, went on to be a councillor on Mayor Mel Lastman’s first Toronto Council. And he wore East York sweaters, hand-knitted by his wife. The tradition continues, Davis told her col-
leagues. Skateboarders come at night to paint the East York logo on local skateboard parks. Teenagers, she insists, have the ’EY’ acronym tattooed on their flesh. The former borough’s senior citizens long for the sight of the old EY. Spending about $1,000 a year to put EY on street signs as they’re being replaced was the least that council could do. As it turns out, no. Council finally settled on something much larger, and overwhelmingly supported a motion from Toronto-Danforth Councillor Mary Fragedakis to blow the bank and stick up signs across all six former municipalities. Clearly, we are not over it at all.

Bike lanes key to Re-imagining Yonge Street FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Derrick Smythe can’t fathom why anyone would be in favour of bike lanes along Doris Avenue or Beecroft Road. "It doesn’t make any sense to me," he said. "I can understand why they might be installed along Yonge because it’s a major arterial road, with lots of businesses. Our side streets are not the place for bike lanes." Smythe was one of dozens of residents who attended a public drop-in Tuesday, Oct. 10 at North York Memorial Hall, 5110 Yonge St., for the Re-imagining Yonge Street Environmental Assessment, which focused on the feasibility of implementing bike lanes on Beecroft Road, Doris Avenue, and Yonge Street. The Re-imagining Yonge Street focused study area consists of Yonge Street from south of Sheppard Avenue (Avondale / Florence avenues) to north of Finch Avenue (the Finch Hydro Corridor), Doris Avenue to the east, and Beecroft Road to the west. City staff had previously reviewed the feasibility of implementing bike lanes on Doris Avenue and Beecroft Road, but had only assessed options that would accommodate painted bicycle lanes

Concerned citizens attend the Re-Imagining Yonge Street study drop-in event held Tuesday night at the North York Memorial Hall. within the existing pavement width of these roads, without impacting the number of travel lanes. Accommodating bike lanes on both Doris Avenue and/or Beecroft Road could be possible through widening of the existing pavement width, relo-
cation of curbs, and/or the removal of travel lanes. It was the fourth drop-in event for the public to learn about the study and provide feedback on: . The possibility of implementing cycling facilities on Beecroft Road, Doris Avenue
and/or Willowdale Avenue; . The preliminary preferred solution for bike lanes on Yonge Street; . Alternate design options for Yonge Street. Along with adding bike lanes, the city is also looking at ways to improve the
streetscape and public realm for pedestrians, cyclists, transit and vehicles along Yonge Street, which could include adding trees, lighting and street furniture, and enhancing sidewalk and boulevard widths. Smythe, who considers
himself a recreational cyclist, said fixing up central North York is a long time coming. "It’s a busy area and has potential to be more welcoming," he said. "But I don’t see the gain in adding bike lanes to lesser travelled streets. Stick them on the main roads." But Kym Heitch disagreed. "The more bike lanes, the better," said the avid cyclist. "Bike lanes will encourage those who might not feel safe to cycle on roadways to actually do so. I think all streets should have them." Heitch, who uses her bicycle as her main mode of transportation, doesn’t think North York, or Toronto in general, is doing enough to become a bikefriendly city. "If the city really wants people to leave the car at home, they need to provide accessibility to cyclists," she said. "Dedicated cycling paths, lanes. It might get off to a slow start, but in years to come, as new generations take over, we’ll see the payoff." Public feedback will be received until Tuesday, Oct. 24. A final public drop-in event is expected for early December. To comment or for information visit toronto.ca/reimaginingyonge
North York Women’s Shelter hosts fundraising gala New building expected to open in spring 2019

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Nikki had recently arrived in Toronto to be with the man she had married through an arranged marriage in India when the abuse started. She had met her husband, who was in Canada, briefly several times before they exchanged vows. The plan was for Nikki (not her real name) to be sponsored by her husband to
Canada. But shortly after arriving in her new country, Nikki found herself at North York Women’s Shelter (NYWS) in January 2015 after suffering physical, emotional, psychological, and financial abuse by her husband, she said. "I moved across the world, I left a job, there was a lot of pressure to make (the marriage) work," Nikki said. "North York Women’s Shelter gave me a second chance at life." She spent five months at the shelter and now lives on her own and recently completed a counselling program, adding she di-

so empowering." Nikki is just one of 11,000 women who has been helped by the North York shelter since it opened in 1984. NYWS will host a fund-
raising gala Thursday, Nov. 9 at Arcadian Court, 401 Bay St., to help build up programming when residents move into the new shelter building in spring 2019. As the Mirror previously reported, the new NYWS will replace the old building at the Dufferin Street and Sheppard Avenue area site, which has been demolished. The provincial government will provide up to $3 million in funding for this project, while the federal government contributed up to $5.8 million. The new 21,000-squarefoot building will include
30 beds in 16 bedrooms, along with offering fully accessible rooms, individualized counselling, group counselling, employment skills training, life coaching, and programming for children. Beds that were in use in the old building were absorbed by its partners, and all residents were moved to sister violence-againstwomen shelters in the summer. The gala will include entertainment, a documentary film starring residents of NYWS, and a silent auction. For tickets or visit http://nyws.ca/gala/

“ Why do I hear but not understand? ” If you struggle to understand, you’re not alone, in fact 47% of Canadians over the age of 60 have hearing loss. Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea (where consonants are heard), speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult. Bayview Village general manager John Minas holds a plaque in the washroom that won Cintas Canada’s Best Restroom 2017 contest Monday.
Mall scores best bathroom win FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com It was a royal flush for Bayview Village Shopping Centre, as Cintas Canada, Ltd. has crowned the mall the winner in its 2017 Canada’s Best Restroom contest. "We’re extremely honoured that the public voted us Canada’s Best Restroom," John Minas, general manager of the Bayview and Sheppard avenues mall, said in a release. "We take pride in providing our glamorous guests with a chic and clean restroom experi-
ence." The 2017 finalists were selected based on cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality, and unique design elements. Online voting was open to the public from July 11 to Sept. 8, with Bayview Village Shopping Centre announced as the winner Tuesday, Oct. 10. The other finalists, ranked in order of final voting, were Spring Grill House Restaurant in Hamilton; Dorinku Restaurant in Edmonton; New City Gas in Montreal; and Renaissance Hotel in Montreal.
As winner, Bayview Village will receive $2,500 in Cintas products and services. In naming Bayview Village a finalist, Cintas noted "...guests are welcomed with chic chandeliers at the restroom entrance. Its washrooms feature fully enclosed stalls, each with its own touch free toilet, faucet and hand dryer. There is a nursing room equipped with a changing station and sink, as well as two cushioned chairs. The washrooms also include stylish sconces on both sides of its classy hand washing basins."

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING
We have used Sam as our realtor now for the sale of three properties. In April he sold our townhouse. We had asked for a quick closing. Not only did we get that but very close to asking price. In 2016 both our parents started having health issues. They trusted us to choose a realtor to sell their rental condo. We chose Sam. We were pleased that this transaction closed without aggravation and sold just under asking. This year, May, we listed our parents’ residential home with Sam. We listed when the market had started to go down. But Sam not only got us the longer closing we had asked for, he also sold the house for $55,000.00 over asking. This was remarkable beasue there were a few houses for sale in the area at that time. Knowing this, Sam advised a strategy to ensure our buyers would not walk away from the deal as many other buyers were just starting to do that. Sam, thank you for all that you have done for us over the years. You are definitely in this profession for the right reasons because the manner in which you conduct business is exceptional. For us clients you have shown us attention, professionalism and results. We will see you when we sell this home. Sincerely, Jeff and Carmen Barton, 45 Heathview Ave.

Ask yourself these questions to see if premium senior living at Amica is a good fit for you
Don’t worry that you’ll lose your green thumb, though: some residents like to help with light gardening.
Do you like your privacy? Amica residences are condo-like settings where all residents have their own studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom suites with your own bathroom.
Do you enjoy hobbies and pastimes? Since we handle groceries, meals, housekeeping, linen service, yard work and maintenance, you’ll have more time for socializing, keeping in touch with family, volunteering and more.
Do you value your independence and freedom? This is a big one. At Amica, you live each day your way, just like you would in your own home. You set your schedule, come and go as you please, decide what and when to eat, etc. Professional, caring staff are on call 24/7 if you need a hand.
1894 Lawrence Ave. E., Scarborough | 416.757.5062 | www.fostershoes.ca OPEN: MON 10-5 | TUES TO FRI 9:30-6:00 | SAT 9:30-5:00 | SUNDAY CLOSED
Do you feel ready to hand over household maintenance? Seniors commonly choose Amica when they don’t want to cook and clean anymore or they’re finding it a challenge.
Do you like having fun things to do? It’s tough to find yourself bored at Amica: seniors enjoy events and outings organized by staff based on what residents in each community like to do. Examples may include happy hours, musical performances, guest lectures, excursions or shopping outings. There’s no pressure to join: all recreation programs are voluntary. Did you know you can try premium senior living to see if you like it? Book a visit at Amica.ca and ask about a trial stay.

Do you appreciate good food? Amica’s dining room is like a restaurant where the servers are friendly, the food is delicious and nutritious and the menu changes every day. Every month you’ll get to select from 112 different entrees, 56 soups and 56 desserts! Our culinary teams also take requests and cook for special diets.
Do you like staying active? All Amica communities have fitness centres and exercise classes for a variety of abilities. And you don’t need to leave the community: the facilities are right on site.

Clockwise from left, a model wears third-place winner Charlotte Li, who chose the 63-year-old widow, Annie Edson Taylor, who successfully barrelled over Niagara Falls in 1901 as the muse for her White Cashmere Collection creation at the Royal Ontario Museum; Designer Van Yanez, of Ryerson University, checks over his creation on model Sarah Barnes back stage; A model wears the toilet paper creation of George Brown design student Lesley Hampton ; Model Kristina Koulechova gets her makeup touched up before walking the runway; The 14th annual White Cashmere Collection first place winner Chelsea Cox, who is a third-year fashion design student at Kwantlen Polytech in British Columbia, celebrates her win at the ROM. Her winning design is a winter coat that nods to the iconic Hudson’s Bay four point blanket. It consists of 9,689 tubular beads made out of tiny hand rolled strips of Cashmere bathroom tissue sealed with clear tape.

C
rafting high fashion garments out of bathroom tissue is no easy feat, but 16 of Canada’s next top designers took on the challenge for the 14th annual White Cashmere Collection. The national student design competition and breast cancer fundraiser is the world’s first and only bathroom tissue couture collection. The special event held Sept. 28 at the Royal Ontario Museum brought together the who’s who of Canada’s fashion scene for an inviteonly runway show that featured intricate ball gowns, sassy cocktail dresses, and other
whimsical frocks. Chelsea Cox of B.C.’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University, earned top honours and went home with $4,000, while Adrian Arnieri, a recent Ryerson grad from Mississauga, came in second and received $2,000. Seneca College student Charlotte Li of Markham placed third and was awarded a $1,000 bursary. More than 150 students from 11 Canadian design schools applied to take part in the #Canada150 theme design competition. Of the Top 16, six were from Toronto.
