Fairview Public Library will reopen April 17, about twoand-a-half months after a flood.

Most of the library will open but part of the first floor will remain closed for restoration.

“Library materials and most of the seating and study areas will be available.

There are stairs and one elevator available to access the 2nd and 3rd floors,” said a notice posted yesterday on Toronto Public Library’s website.

The first floor was flooded when a watermain outside the library on the west side of the building broke at about 4:10 a.m. on Feb. 5.

The flood happened less than a month after the popular branch reopened Jan. 10 following a $4.84-million, 15-month renovation project. >>>NEWLY, page 18

Jane-Finch activist wins YWCA award Award-winning filmmaker Sue Chun, a senior producer of a website promoting the Jane and Finch community, is this year’s YWCA Young Woman of Distinction.

A senior producer with www. jane-finch.com, Chun is a community activist who makes videos focused on empowering marginalized women and newcomers and reducing youth violence.

“Sue Chun, this year’s Young Woman of Distinction, is an award-winning young activist whose films put newcomers, racialized women, and girls from priority neighbourhoods in the spotlight,” a YWCA statement said.

“Informed by her experiences living with her mother in the Jane-Finch neighbourhood, Sue’s films tell the stories that are too often glossed over by newspapers and statistics. Her multimedia productions unveil a different kind of community, where motivated young people are working together for change. Sue’s commitment to her community is an inspiration to young women from any neighbourhood in our city.”

In recognition of the award, Chun will receive a $3,000 grant from the Julia M. Ruby Fund, which she plans to use to pursue a law degree to make an even stronger impact in her community.

Chun has won numerous awards for her community activism including the Ontario Volunteer Service Youth Award, Heritage Toronto Award, Canadian Ethnic Media Association Award and the National Ethnic Press Award.

Chun and six other YWCA women of distinction will receive their awards May 22 at the Carlu special events venue at 444 Yonge St., south of College Street.

Ryan Hawken aiming high in YTV’s ‘The Next Star: SuperGroup’ North York teen finds his voice on reality show FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

H

e made the Top 6 on YTV’s The Next Star back in 2012, and now Ryan Hawken is hoping to capture the No. 1 spot on spin-off series The Next Star: SuperGroup.

The 16-year-old North York resident was one of an initial pool of 30 finalists to compete on SuperGroup, with 10 singers cut.

The remaining 20 formed four groups of five – two boy groups, two girl groups – and the winning quintet will be crowned during the show’s live finale Sunday, April 13 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

“I was asked to come back,” Hawken said of the six-episode show, which premiered March 11.

“It’s similar to The Next Star, but we’re in groups and not soloists.”

Two groups were eliminated in the episode that aired Tuesday evening, with two groups – including Hawken’s – making it to the finale. The winning group will be determined by viewers’ votes. winner gets contract The “supergroup” will receive a management contract from 21 Entertainment, which manages singers Fefe Dobson, JoJo and Kreesha Turner, and will have two original songs released on iTunes.

“My group has similar taste in music and we really get along,” Hawken said, adding his group is coached by Lee.

earl haig student The Grade 11 Earl Haig Secondary School student credits his time on The Next Star several years ago with “helping me find my voice,” adding he wants to pursue music as a career.

He’s part of several bands, the most noteworthy one called Boardwalk, which brings their rock/pop sound to various venues across the city, he said.

The band is planning to release an EP within coming months.

He admits juggling his musical aspirations with school hasn’t been easy, but he has no qualms about following his passion.

“I can come back to do school,” he said.

By pure coincidence, there was one familiar face when The Next Star: SuperGroup finalists gathered – fellow Earl Haig student Curtis Smith, who happens to be in Hawken’s group.

“He played bass for me when my band played the El Mocambo,” he said. “I didn’t know him that well and we would hang out once in a while. Now we are close.”

We don’t all consider ourselves family caregivers, but in truth, one in four cares for a family member or friend who has some form of short or long-term incapacity.

Will Earth Hour spawn similar hour events?

First off, I realize not everybody was able to participate in Earth Hour Saturday night.

If you were operating a truck, cab, limo or car at the time, you’d have had to take a pass. Turning off your headlights while driving in the dark is a definite no-no. You couldn’t have joined in if you were staging an indoor event, such as a hockey game, either.

Contact sports by candlelight is not recommended.

For those who were able to partake, according to reports, the cumulative effect radiated throughout the globe, leaving the planet and its inhabitants with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Ironically, turning all my light bulbs off in concert with so many others around the world, actually turned on one light bulb in my home: the one inside my head. It occurred to me that if the idea of increasing environmental awareness could generate so much interest globally, why not

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY use the same one-hour concept to address other issues that concern us all?

It doesn’t have to be on Saturday night from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. It could be a different hour depending on the topic. What’s more, with all that’s going on these days, we could easily have 51 of them a year on top of Earth Hour. Imagine the cumulative effect of 52 such hours annually when we’re all on the same page globally. The planet has got to love that kind of math.

Here are a few suggestions for topics I think could go a long way to making the world a better place.

For starters, how about no acronyms for an hour a year? You have to replace them with full-length words.

Ask grandma or grandpa to tell you about them. Words were all the rage back in the day. They were used in

equally antiquated structures known as sentences.

Speaking of words, two the world could do without would be “no problem.”

Let’s make that next on the list shall we? Even if it’s only for an hour a year, not hearing that phrase would do wonders for the globe.

Staying with the subject of eradicating noise pollution, how about for an hour a year nobody with earphones can sing their favourite song out of key and with the wrong lyrics at the top of their lungs in a crowded subway?

That could be followed by an hour the ensuing week of no screaming louder than the lead singer of a heavy metal band on your cellphone in a crowded mall.

We could also address aggravating signage in the landscape in the same format. How about an hour a year when food prices on store and restaurant posters don’t end in .99? Instead we see the actual final total including the HST.

And let’s not forget the workplace. How about an hour a year when nobody in the office can ask you if you have any Tylenol?

Anyhow, these are just a few ideas. I bet you could come up with 51 of your own that would be just as beneficial.

But I’ll leave you with three more annual hours the world could use right now: no tweeting, no texting and no selfies.

I know you’re thinking that’s an excessive length of time to expect people to curtail such essential behaviour. So, how does this sound? One minute for no tweeting, one minute no texting and one second for no selfies. That better?

Trust me, even with that tiny amount of abstaining for each, the planet will breathe a huge sigh of relief.

But caregiving is a challenge. Caregiving is a commitment. It’s often fraught with worry, built on unflinching dedication and often carried out with little respite.

ynthia and Gary Hoy were griefstricken when they first envisioned a blood drive in their son Alistair’s memory just weeks after the 14-year-old died of leukemia in January 2011.

Buoyed by heartbroken family, friends and a community all desperate to honour the popular teenager and perform a charitable act in his memory, the Hoys set up what they thought was a one-time blood donor clinic called Project 162 Pay it Forward.

The 162 referred to the number of units of blood Alistair needed in the 17 short days from his diagnosis of acute lymphomic leukemia on Dec. 20, 2010 to his death on Jan. 6, 2011.

The response was overwhelming at the clinics held at Alistair’s school, Don Mills Collegiate Institute, and the family’s church, Jubilee United.

That success led to Project

162 becoming an annual event at the church.

“We thought it would be a one-time event. We didn’t even consider anything else. But, as you know, the first event was an overwhelming success, in ways we didn’t even anticipate,” Cynthia said in an email from Kenya, where she and Gary are living for two years for her job.

“Certainly by the amount of blood collected, and the money raised for the LLSC (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada). But also in ways that surprised us, by the community support, by the number of first-time donors, by the donations of space, food, beverages, prizes and gifts, of the number of volunteers, of the CBS (Canadian Blood Services) staff who worked longer after their day was done. Even more than all of that, incredible in itself, was the coming together of a grieving community, who grieved with us and yet acknowledged our mutual

loss in an inspiring, hopeful and celebratory way.

So, it seemed that we were meant to repeat the event.”

However, while there will be a clinic this year, it will be the last, although the Hoys hope people will continue to donate blood in their son’s memory.

Because organizing duties fall on the shoulders of a small group of dedicated friends and with the Hoys out of the country, it isn’t possible to continue with the annual event, said Cynthia, who will return with Gary from Kenya for the clinic.

They are hoping Alistair’s friends, who are now old enough to donate blood, will use the final clinic to launch a life-long commitment to donating blood.

Project 162 has been a success in many ways, including collecting more than 630 units of blood, persuading 329 first-time donors to roll up their sleeves, encouraging 170 people to become Alistair’s

Partners for Life blood donors, and raising more than $44,000 for LLSC, Cynthia said.

“But the events have (also) been successful in less obvious, much more subtle ways. The first event helped a wounded and shocked community grieve, to come together and help one another,” she said.

“Maybe I am being idealistic or unrealistic to think, too, that the event helps us all remember the fragility of life, even for the very young, that it reminds us to try to be better people, to think of others and to help others.”

Cynthia and Gary have pondered many times what Alistair would have thought of the clinics in his name.

“We are sure he is thrilled that Project 162 has made such an impact and difference,” Cynthia said.

“Alistair was never shy, but he was the quiet defender of the underdog, the thoughtful protector and caregiver. While he might be embarrassed by

the fuss being made about him, I suspect he understands and forgives us.”

While the family is moving forward, they will never get over losing Alistair, Cynthia said.

“Our hearts still ache for Alistair, for the boy we had and the man we won’t ever get to see, but we feel blessed for the gift of

“As Pooh said, ‘How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard,’ and Dr. Seuss who said, ‘Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.’”

Toronto Police Service has partnered with North York General Hospital (NYGH) to launch its newest Mobile Crisis Intervention Team (MCIT).

As of Monday, North York’s 32 and 33 Divisions joined the 12 existing partnerships between police and hospitals.

MCITs consist of a specially trained police officer and a mental health nurse who respond to 911 emergency and police dispatch calls, seven days a week and, depending on the team, work as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 11 p.m.

STABBED IN VIC PARK-LAWRENCE AREA ◗TEEN

A 17-year-old boy is recovering after being stabbed in the chest and abdomen during a robbery last week.

Police said the victim and two friends were at a bus shelter at Lawrence and Victoria Park avenues when a man came up to them around 9:15 p.m. on March 26.

The man demanded the victim’s wallet and then began stabbing him in the chest and abdomen.

The suspect then fled.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries.

The suspect is black, 25 to 30 years old, 5’9” tall with a heavy build. He was wearing a light-coloured jacket and was armed with a knife.

NOTICE OF COMPLETION Environmental Project Report THE PROJECT Metrolinx has completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the Union Pearson (UP) Express Electrification project.

Metrolinx is proposing to electrify the UP Express service beginning at the future UP Express Union Station in the City of Toronto and terminating at the future UP Express Pearson Station (at Terminal 1, Toronto Pearson International Airport) in the City of Mississauga. The project involves the electrification of approximately 25 kilometres of track along the Union Station GO Rail Corridor and Kitchener GO Rail Corridor to Highway 427, where the route then follows the new UP Express spur line (under construction) into Pearson Airport (see key map below). The purpose of the project is to convert the UP Express service from diesel to electric power, which will be achieved through a Traction Electrification System that will provide electrical power to the trains by means of a power distribution system. An Overhead Contact System (wiring system) will be suspended from a number of support structures (i.e. portals, cantilevers) placed along and over the track. Two paralleling stations and a new maintenance facility are also required. In addition, a separate Environmental Assessment study is being carried out by Hydro One for the proposed Traction Power Substation, in accordance with the Class EA for Minor Transmission Facilities.

Electrification of the UP Express is part of The Big Move, Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan, which will dramatically improve how people move in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Funding for electrification is dependent on the Metrolinx Investment Strategy.

THE PROCESS The environmental impact of this transit project was assessed and an Environmental Project Report prepared in accordance with the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings.

Ariel, who’s involved with track and field and basketball, said it was “kind of scary” playing the politicians because she didn’t know their strengths.

When told by The Mirror Clement appeared to be a fierce competitor based on observations from an earlier match with Gosal, her eyes widened.

Co-founded in 2010 by former world No. 1 squash player Jonathon Power, Urban Squash Toronto aims to increase graduate rates by using sport as a hook, said executive director Shivani Ruparell.

The program, offered to 50 students starting in Grade 6 at Oakdale and Brookview, is made up of squash lessons, time spent on school work, and fitness or team-building exercises. Students are picked up and dropped off at school, and an after-school meal is provided. The program is free to all participants.

Currently in its third year, the program is set up so students stay in it throughout their high school years, Ruparell said.

the gear, and Oxford Learning provides certified assessors, she said.

Clement and Gosal, both avid squash players, wanted to show support for Urban Squash Toronto and teach the kids a thing or two, Ruparell said.

“Maybe at budget time, (Clement) can get some money for sports,” Gosal said. “My job is to always look for money for sport.”

Though he goes to the gym regularly, Gosal has been kept out of the squash court for 10 years because of a knee injury.

“My sport was soccer in university,” he said, drenched in sweat from an earlier, intense

match with Clement. “I also run. My goal is to do a half marathon.”

A squash player since university, Clement said he makes it onto the court once to twice a week in Ottawa.

“It’s the perfect workout,” he said, trying to catch his breath from two earlier matches.

“Forty minutes of aerobic exercise, 20 minutes in the shower.

It’s a game for life. I hope to be playing in my 70s. I hope my knees don’t give out.”

A supporter of Urban Squash Toronto, Clement said anything that gets kids off the couch and moving is a winner in his books. “There is a difference between play and PlayStation,” he said.

Police have gun, search for three suspects related to Yorkdale murder Toronto homicide investigators have recovered a gun found near a murder scene at Yorkdale Shopping Centre a year ago, but will not say who had it.

“I am not prepared to speculate who was in possession of this firearm,” Det. Rob North said at a press conference Monday.

The firearm was recovered some time after 23-year-old Michael Nguyen was gunned down and a 24-year-old “associate” was shot and wounded as the two men were returning to their vehicle in the west parking lot after shopping on March 30, 2013 at about 8 p.m.

Police have described the targeted shooting as gangrelated.

The gun has been forensically tested and is in police possession, North said. It had not been fired.

Investigators believe there were at least three shooters.

A Chevrolet Malibu Maxx is a vehicle of interest in the case.

On Monday, North released descriptions of three suspects wanted in connection with the incident.

The first man is described by witnesses as mixed-race Asian, approximately 25 years old, 5’8” to 5’10” tall, with a medium to heavy build and short hair.

The second suspect is male, light-skinned, possibly of Persian or Middle Eastern descent, in his 20s.

The third person is a man described as Asian in his 20s with medium height and a medium to heavy build.

“These men were dressed

predominantly in black and the first man’s face was partially covered,” North said.

After watching hundreds of hours of closed circuit TV footage and working with General Motors, police are also looking for a vehicle of interest.

“It’s a silver 2004 to 2007, four-door Chevrolet Malibu Maxx and it’s very similar to the Malibu except it’s a hatchback,” North said.

“Investigators have spoken to many owners of this model vehicle. I would request that if you own or possess this type of vehicle and it was in the city of Toronto on March 30, 2013 and we have not reached out to you, please contact homicide.”

TTC chief customer Chris Upfold and communications chief Brad Ross explained the plan to TTC users in a short web video.

Chester and Bessarion stations were among those on the chopping block, and the plan which would save the TTC “hundreds of dollars” in operating expenses.

GO Transit schedule changes GO Transit also announced seasonal revisions to both its bus and train schedules to take effect this weekend.

The regional transit provider, which is operated by Metrolinx, had previously announced the resumption of service to Niagara Falls.

As of Saturday, GO will boost service on all its seven train lines and many bus routes. Service to postsecondary educational institutions like the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus will be reduced over the summer months.

Union Pearson Express Traction Power Substation NOTICE OF COMPLETION Draft Environmental Study Report

Hydro One Networks Inc. (Hydro One) has completed the draft Environmental Study Report (ESR) for the Union Pearson (UP) Express Traction Power Substation Project. Metrolinx is proposing to electrify the UP Express service from Union Station in the City of Toronto to Pearson International Airport in the City of Mississauga. A separate Environmental Assessment Study is being carried out by Metrolinx for this project, in accordance with O. Reg. 231/08 – Transit Project Assessment Process. Hydro One is seeking approval for the Traction Power Substation, which will be connected to Ontario’s electrical system. This substation will convert the voltage from 230 kV to 25 kV so that it can be used to power electric trains. The project area is shown on the map below.

How to provide your input: This project is being planned in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Minor Transmission Facilities, approved under Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act. New operator of bike share program promises improvements over BIXI RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The private-sector operator of newly christened Bike Share Toronto is promising better availability of vehicles and more reliable customer service for the coming year.

Alta Bicycle Share, which is now running the bike sharing program’s day-to-day operations, revealed the new moniker and logo this week, which officially replaces the original BIXI moniker.

The new entity, which will answer to the Toronto Parking Authority, will continue to offer short-term bike rentals at the former BIXI station locations. It has already launched its annual membership drive and as an incentive is offering lower rates and

shorter terms in an effort to attract more subscribers.

Improving service will remain the immediate objective of Bike Share Toronto, said the service’s general manager, Scott Hancock. But he cautioned against hoping for wholesale expansion of the program which has fewer than 100 stations downtown, but none north of Bloor Street.

Alta was approached last year to take over the bike share program after former operator PBSC warned it was unable to finance BIXI’s dayto-day operations and in danger of defaulting on a loan of almost $4 million guaranteed by the city. The program was saved after street furniture supplier Astral Media agreed to re-allocate $5 million from its contract with the city.

TD furnishes 40 Toronto schools with 800 computers CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com From Vancouver to Halifax, 800 computers from all across Canada were collected and donated to 40 Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) schools.

TD Bank Group made the donation of refurbished PCs and monitors, which will benefit thousands of TCDSB elementary students including those at St. Charles Garnier Catholic School near Jane Street and Finch Avenue where a special thank you celebration was held Friday morning.

“We are so grateful for what we received from the TD Bank,” said Angela Gauthier, TCDSB direc-

tor education, noting the importance of partnering with the corporate sector to provide tools that students need to learn in the 21st century. “We can’t do it all. We can’t teach in a box.”

Sam Crispo, Grade 8 teacher at St. Charles Garnier, agreed.

“They live in an age where technology is everything,” he said. “They just automatically gravitate towards the computers.

They’re self-motivated.

They’re engaged.”

Stewart Banks and Emmanuel Ronchin, representatives from TD Bank Group, were also on hand to see the students use the refurbished computers.

“We do a lot of this type of work,” said Banks,

adding before they partnered with school boards and local charities, the older computers would just be stored in warehouses.

When the opportunity arose to give back to the community, Ronchin said they saw it as a “win-win” situation.

“I really want to thank the school board for working with us,” he said. “For us, it was about helping communities in need. That was our starting point.”

One student was certainly appreciative of the refurbished computers as he worked on one of his assignments.

“They’re way quicker than the old ones and they’re better looking,” said Grade 8 student Daniel

s I write this the morning of April 1, reporters and cameras are camped outside the mayor’s office, waiting for Rob Ford to show up for council. It is antsy business: encounters with the mayor at city hall are chancy operations.

Ford makes it difficult.

Sometimes, he breaks into a run. Recently, when reporters and cameras were following him in from Nathan Phillips Square, the mayor called a charge through reporters lining a public staircase, knocking down a photographer.

He was closely accompanied by city hall security, as he often is – with security imposing themselves between photographers and the mayor, and at one point, asking reporters to stop shouting questions.

The same guard was bowled over himself in the crush.

The situation was hardly a safe one for anyone in city hall at the time. Reporters and camera people were in immediate harm’s way, but so too were members of the public.

The mayor might also have harmed himself, although

david nickle the city he seemed to feel he had the matter under control.

Now, no one was seriously hurt – or at least says that they were. But this is an ongoing worry.

Late last year, security stood by while the mayor bumped into councillor Pam McConnell as he ran across the floor of council, and allowed the mayor’s driver Jerry Agyemang to photograph members of the public in an intimidating way while the Ford brothers goaded them on.

It is interesting to note that last week, while I was attempting to photograph Porter Airlines owner Robert Deluce making a deputation in council chambers from the same angle, security put a stop to it. It is clear that there are different sets of rules for the public and the press – even councillors – and members of the mayor’s personal staff.

As a matter of disclosure – when I’m not writing this column, I’m serving as pres-

ident of the City Hall Press Gallery, and trying to deal with these matters. I do so with some sympathy for at least two of the three sides. As journalists, we have to be able to ask difficult questions and confront city politicians with uncomfortable truths. That’s not negotiable. And yet the situation that city hall security find themselves in these days is unprecedented: looking after the safety of everyone in a city hall, with a chief magistrate that demands they double as a personal guard and has been known to behave erratically.

It is an awful situation.

But at least until the election it’s a situation that will persist. As I finish this column, Ford has arrived at city hall.

When asked where he might have been, he responded by pushing through the throng and grabbing the lens of a camera held by a CTV cameraman, pushing it away and disappearing into his office.

It’s hardly an incident to inspire feelings of security.
