North York Harvest Food Bank collects $100,000 and 100,000 pounds of food The North York Harvest Food Bank’s Spring Food Drive, which ran Feb. 29 to April 8, aimed to collect $100,000 and 100,000 pounds of food. In total, 100,000 pounds of food was donated, along with $103,480. “Our goal this spring was to raise enough food and funds to help provide food for our neighbours in need,” said Ryan Noble, executive director of NYHFB. “A big thank you to the generous individuals, businesses, community groups, schools and faith organizations in this community who have generously donated to the Spring Food Drive. This support will help us ensure that as we head toward the summer months no family in Toronto will have to go hungry.” NYHFB is the primary food bank for northern Toronto, distributing more than 2.3 million pounds of food last year. Police continue to look for witnesses to a high-speed crash in North York that claimed three young lives and seriously injured two others. The collision happened at Jane Street and Sheppard Avenue at 3:28 a.m. last Sunday. Police believe a southbound 2003 Acura 3.2 TL with five occupants was travelling at a high speed when it hit a second Acura and then struck a pole, a fence and several trees. Four people were ejected from the car and one was partially ejected. A 19-year-old man, a 23-yearold man and a 21-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene. A 22-year-old Brampton man suffered life-threatening injuries while a 24-year-old man, also from Brampton, received serious injuries. “We are still appealing for additional witnesses,” Const. High school unveils restored historic estate fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com After years of sitting desolate, the restoration of O’Connor Estate was celebrated Friday. Born in Deseronto, Ont. in 1885, Frank O’Connor moved to Toronto in 1912 and opened the Laura Secord candy store, which he founded, at Yonge and Elm streets the following year, becoming a self-made millionaire. Within 10 years Laura Secord shops opened across Canada and branched into the United States with Fanny Farmer candy stores. In the late 1920s, O’Connor purchased 600 acres at Victoria Park Avenue and Ellesmere

Road for his country home dubbed Maryvale after his daughter. It was here he built the Colonial Revival-style mansion O’Connor Estate. Then prime minister Mackenzie King appointed O’Connor to the Senate in 1935, where he represented the Irish and Catholic populations. O’Connor died in 1939 at age 54. Upon his death, the O’Connor Estate was given to the Christian Brothers, who, along with the Daughters of Wisdom, opened Senator O’Connor College School in 1963. The Christian Brothers lived at O’Connor Estate until 2000 and left the buildings to

the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), who remain the landlord. But the O’Connor build-

ings, which were made up of the estate, coach house and shed, were left vacant and deteriorated when the school

underwent a major rebuild in 2002, with a demolition permit requested in 2009. But because the property had just received designation under the Ontario Heritage Act, the demolition permit was denied, and a partnership was formed between the Frank O’Connor House not-for-profit organization and the TCDSB to restore the site. Renovation work began in the fall of 2010. A fire sparked by a welder’s torch in May 2012 set restoration work back one year, and it would take $5.6 million before the project was complete. An occupancy permit for the estate building was issued in January 2014, and since

then the TCDSB has used the estate and coach house as teaching space. The space is also used by various community organizations. ‘Fantastic event’ “It was a fantastic event,” Tony Wagner, former chair of the Frank O’Connor House board of directors, said of the restoration celebration. A $500,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant in 2012 was used to, among other things, install an elevator and security fence, accessible washrooms, replace stairways, and add a catering kitchen. “We hope to open the doors to community and cultural groups,” he said.

TDSB trustee loses battle with autoimmune disease fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com A Toronto District School Board (TDSB) trustee who had represented North York since 2010 was laid to rest Tuesday following a battle with an autoimmune disease. Howard Kaplan, who represented Ward 5, York Centre, died Monday at Toronto General Hospital, leaving behind a partner and two children. He was 72. “It is with heavy hearts, that we announce the passing of Trustee Howard Kaplan,” a statement Monday read from chair Robin Pilkey and director of education John Malloy. “We know that all Toronto District School Board trustees and staff join us in expressing our sincere condolences to Howard’s family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time... from early years programming to special edu-

cation, Howard was passionate about public education and was a strong believer in equity in education... in the coming days, we will be looking at how best to celebrate Howard’s life.” In a Facebook post last November, Kaplan wrote about his health issues. “I’ve been diagnosed with an auto-immune condition: IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis,” he wrote. “Look it up, it’s too complicated to explain it here. “What it means is that I will eventually need a new liver. I am currently undergoing a battery of tests to see if I am a suitable candidate for a transplant: I have to be healthy enough – good heart, lungs, kidneys, etc; and I have to be sick enough – my liver has to be really bad. “Accordingly, my energy level fluctuates day-by-day. I don’t know from one day to the next how much work I can do. It will get worse as

time goes on until I get a new liver... if I’m a suitable candidate. “As far as my work as a trustee goes, I’m doing what I can, when I can. Staff are aware of my condition, and are taking on some of my constituency work.”

In his eulogy, David Abramowitz, United Jewish People’s Order (UJPO) Canada president, said he was surprised when Kaplan, who was a member of the organization, ran for TDSB trustee. “I was particularly surprised to find him as a school board trustee candidate in my riding,” he wrote. “But his election was not just a personal victory, it was a chance for him to experience serving the pedagogical community. “I think it was a fitting final occupation for a guy who believed in egalitarianism, social justice and an educational system which championed them.” Kaplan’s involvement with Jewish culture, which he “held dearly”, was made apparent by his decadeslong membership with the Toronto Jewish Folk Choir, Abramowitz wrote. “Through it he expressed his love of Jewish music in all

Instrument library right step in making Toronto a music city

new pilot project that allows library patrons to borrow a musical instrument simply with their library card is a big step in the right direction. The Sun Life Financial Musical Instrument Lending Library officially launched this past week at the Parkdale library, now giving the opportunity for aspiring musicians to sign out instruments ranging from violins and guitars to a full-size keyboard and a banjo. It’s a step in the right direction in making music more accessible to the community especially for the youth as well as those who can’t afford to buy goodquality instruments. Just as several organizations have seen the value in youth playing sports by subsidizing expensive equipment, this program shines a light on the value of youth playour view ing music to enrich their lives. It’s also a step in the right Pilot project direction in making Toronto a opens music to music city by cultivating homegrown talent. everyone It was fitting that in attendance at the launch event were two successful Canadian musicians – Juno Awardwinning artist Chantal Kreviazuk and her husband, Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida. Maida told Metroland Media Toronto that he didn’t have access to musical instruments until his brother bought one when he was 12 years old. To ensure more kids have that opportunity to play music, Maida and Kreviazuk donated a guitar and keyboard of their own to add to the 100 instruments already in the collection. The community can support this initiative, too. Residents can donate their own gently used or new musical instruments to this pilot program, which runs until the end of 2017, and help it grow and expand to libraries across the city. There’s a Musical Instrument Donation Drive, which continues until May 7, and things are off to a great start. Calls have already come in from people wanting to donate such instruments as bongo drums, French horns, flutes, erhu (Chinese fiddle) and midi controllers. NDP crisis has been a long time in the making Last weekend, the New Democratic Party membership did what is unthinkable among mainstream Canadian party politics and ousted their leader Tom Mulcair. The shockwaves carried across the land: the NDP, stalwart voice of Canadian progressive thinking, is in crisis! Of course, the NDP has been in crisis for years and particularly for those of us watching from Toronto. Although you certainly can’t blame the late Jack Layton, it’s easy to mark the beginning of that crisis with the former federal NDP leader’s electoral success and then his death, both in 2011. The NDP was briefly the Official Opposition in Ottawa. As Stephen Harper’s Conservatives used their majority government to alienate much of the country, the NDP became a de-facto government in waiting. But it wasn’t just that collection of newly elected MPs that walked away with expectations raised. Layton

New Democrats at least politically, cherry-picked: Optimism and hope, that the party that had traditionally been a third-party left-of-centre conscience, might persuade voters to allow them to lead; and also fear, that if they led too much with their leftof-centre conscience then they’d never win. It was a bad and selfdestructive lesson. The Ontario NDP forced a costly provincial election in 2014, rejecting in conscience the most left-of-centre provincial budget that a Liberal government had ever put forward. Leader Andrea Horwath made some gains for the party,

but in Toronto lost some of the party’s most historically secure seats. The same year, Olivia Chow turned a commanding lead in the polls to a third-place finish in the Toronto mayoralty race, with a campaign that did tack more to the left, but was timid and unambitious. And last year, Mulcair did much the same thing federally, when he led the party to a place somewhat to the right of the Liberals, and predictably, collapsed. It was enough to wipe the slate clean for New Democrats in Toronto. Now there seems to be strong interest in the grassroots of the party in turning back to its progressive roots, embracing as many members have, the so-called Leap Manifesto, which urges the party to return to its environmentalist, socially- and economicallyinclusive roots. But don’t count out the lure of power to eclipse conscience. Alberta New Democrat Premier Rachel

Notley is still providing a lone successful example of the pragmatism that has proved so toxic to the party. At the convention, she provided a reminder the only way to make that stick for more than one term is to lighten up on the pipeline opposition. You’d like to think that in this age of surging U.S. presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders and “Sunny Ways” Justin Trudeau, the original Canadian party of hope and social justice and change would be in an unambiguous position to capitalize on the mood, and maybe use that to take their shot at forming a serious progressive government one day. Instead, the NDP is tangled in its own ambitions. Disentanglement will take time, and when it’s over, who’s to say what will be standing in its place?

It doesn’t happen often that a show that had limited success in its original Broadway production can be transformed into an enjoyably amusing piece in the hands of a community theatre group. Alexander Showcase Theatre has pulled it off with their production of The Addams Family. Based on the characters created by Charles Addams for The New Yorker, the creepy, kooky Addams family members seemed curiously lost in a big bloated Broadway production. For a subsequent touring edition, the authors rewrote the script and updated the score and turned the monster into something more likable. It is the revised version that is onstage at Fairview Library theatre this week. Vinnie Sestito keeps the production tight and focused, allowing many gags (visual and spoken) to stimulate laughter. Gomez, stylishly played by Milton Dover, has terrific chemistry with Morticia sung and danced with assurance by Sharon Zehavi. Their tango late in the show is one steamy dazzler. The story centers on their daughter Wednesday, who has fallen in love and pleads with her parents not to embarrass her at a joint family dinner. Lauren Mayer as Wednesday expertly portrays the angst experienced by many teens while her boyfriend Lucas, portrayed by Phil Skala, practically has little hearts popping out of his puppy-dog eyes whenever he looks at her. These performers know and understand the characters they are playing, and have a ball doing so. The other members of the Addams household are reduced to bright funny cameos. Anthony Palermo as the

impish younger brother Pugsley; David McEachern as the lumbering Lurch with the deep, deep voice; Cheryl Lee as the pot-smoking Grandma; and Brandon Chambers as Uncle Fester, who interrupts the family dinner to announce he has fallen in love...with the moon. Into all of this, wander Robby Burko and Lizzie Kurtz as the straight-laced parents of Lucas. Their reactions are priceless, but they seem to learn from the Addams and after a party game called “Full Disclosure” they start to unclench just a little. The elaborate set created by Peter Thorman and Beth Roher is given appropriately spooky lighting by Chris Humphrey. Gwyneth Sestito leads the orchestra through Andrew Lippa’s at times discordant music. Lippa, who usually writes fetching songs

of deep character insight, was the wrong composer for this particular show, but the cast and orchestra play it with enthusiasm that overrides its deficiencies. Find out rent costs near TTC stations How much does it cost to live near every TTC subway station? A new rental map attempts to answer that question. The map posted by Sky View Suites finds, not surprisingly, units near downtown subway stations have the most expensive rents on average. For example, you could pay $1,800 for a one-bedroom condo near King station, but under $1,000 for the same kind of unit by Main Street station. One surprise is the relative affordability near Union Station where apparently a two-bedroom unit condo can be rented for no more than $2,500. Sky View says it calculated the average asking price based on a year’s worth of condo rental data, assuming rents and property values will continue to rise per year. That’s more than double the amount of bikes available for rental currently. Currently you can find bike share docks only in the downtown, but with the planned expansion there’s now a good opportunity to install the first stations north of Bloor Street. From now until the end of April, you can fill out a short online survey indicating your preference, or antipathy, for how streets

The Caregiver Show 2016 takes place at Ontario Science Centre Show provides resources, support for family caregivers Looking after a loved one who is suffering from dementia or other conditions can be extremely stressful for family members involved, and an upcoming show in North York aims to offer them some help and relief. Statistics from the Alzheimer Society of Canada show that in 2011, 747,000 Canadians were living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias – that’s 14.9 per cent of Canadians 65 and older. Between two per cent and 10 per cent of all cases of dementia start before the age of 65. The risk for dementia doubles every five years after age 65.

The Caregiver Show is slated for Friday, May 6, at the Ontario Science Centre from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show helps raise awareness of how many family members are involved in caring for loved ones in need. This year’s The Caregiver Show is sponsored by The Mobility Shop and CanniMed, and is brought to Toronto residents by Metroland Media Toronto and Downsizing Divas. More than 20 exhibitors are already scheduled to take part in the show. As the Alzheimer Society of Canada notes, caregiving is a critical

issue for people living with dementia and for Canadians in general. One in five Canadians aged 45 and older provides some form of care to seniors living with long-term health problems. A quarter of all family caregivers are seniors themselves; and a third of them (more than 200,000) are older than 75. The Caregiver Show will allow attendees to learn about various health topics, demonstrations from the participating organizations and experts as well as the resources, services and products available for caregiving needs. Participants will also have a chance to connect with other caregivers and professionals in the industry.

Also, there will be chance for caregivers to rejuvenate themselves in the Rest and Relaxation Zone where they can enjoy a little pampering and replenish their energy levels. This area will also help teach caregivers ways to take care of themselves as they perform a very stressful job. New to this year’s The Caregiver

Show will be a screening of the documentary Sybil and Betts: Requiem for a Friendship by filmmaker David Bajurny. Admission to the show is free. Parking at The Science Centre will be discounted to $5 for those attending the show. For more details on The Caregiver Show, visit www.caregivershow.ca
