Deep in a baseball game, and when his team needs a big play, count on Tyler Offman to set the rhythm. Often oblivious to crowds, confident about his ability and having the right skills, the 13 year old has been known to make the big defensive play or step to the plate, examine the opposition, and then cash in with a key hit. Offman plays for the North York Blues triple-A team that will be one of 32 squads from across Southern Ontario hoping

to claim the 58th annual Canadian National Exhibition Lions Club International tournament title. It’s a single elimination event set for Aug. 15 to 28 during the CNE. The opener for Offman and his teammates should be a dandy as organizers have them meeting the North York Blues double-A squad on Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. Win and move on three days later against Newmarket, a seeded squad given a bye. Offman is a kid, but doesn’t play like one. He’s also six-foot-one, strong >>>CNE, page 13

Police ask VELD music festival patrons to hand over pills following deaths Police are appealing to some 30,000 concert-goers who attended an electronic music festival at Downsview Park over last weekend to come forward with any drugs or pills they purchased there after two people died and more than a dozen were hospitalized after ingesting an unknown substance. Investigators, who are treating the deaths as homicides, are also asking attendees of the VELD Music Festival to post any pictures or videos from the venue. Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Det. Sgt. Peter Trimble said police are looking for a brown pill, and a clear capsule with a white substance inside. Those who come forward with a single pill will not face any criminal

charges, but individuals who may have multiple pills and drugs are advised to retain a lawyer before speaking to police, he said, adding investigators are waiting on toxicology reports for the deceased. One death is being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) after a 22-year-old man had to be restrained by officers while receiving medical attention. He died in an ambulance on the way to hospital. According to the SIU, an officer called an ambulance after noticing two people carrying a man who appeared to be in need of medical attention at the Keele Street and Sheppard Avenue park. While being treated by emergency personnel, the man became

violent and was handcuffed by the officer. The handcuffs were removed when the man was being treated in the ambulance, but he lost vital signs while en route to hospital and was pronounced dead. A 20-year-old woman also died, but the SIU is not involved in that case. The 13 people treated in hospital suffered similar symptoms, including paleness, fainting and seizures. The SIU investigates any circumstances involving police and a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Mammoliti: Perks, Layton should resign over support of concerts DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com York West Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti is calling for the resignation of two of his colleagues who supported electronic music events at Exhibition Place, following the death of two people at a similar event at Parc Downsview Park. Neither Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks nor TrinitySpadina Councillor Mike Layton would comment on Mammoliti’s statement issued Tuesday, following the deaths at the Veld Music Festival at Parc Downsview Park on the weekend. Police are investigating the matter and seeking samples of drugs that had been purchased at the event held Saturday and Sunday, and also photos or videos

taken there. Mammoliti said regardless of the investigation, Layton and Perks should resign. “Councillor Perks and Layton should resign their seats on council,” wrote Mammoliti. “If it wasn’t for them pushing for these events and insisting they be held on government lands I don’t believe these kids would be dead today.” Earlier this year, Perks, Layton and other councillors overturned a decision by the Exhibition Place Board of Directors to ban electronic music events from the Exhibition Place grounds – in opposition to board member Mammoliti and board chair Mark Grimes. Since then, Mammoliti has taken several opportunities to attack Perks and Layton for their position.

An eye on your neighbourhood W

e’d like to hear about the best practices of your local Neighbourhood Watch. It’s because we think the best ideas are often old ones, and where the safety of a community is concerned, neighbours watching out for each other is about as effective as you can get. An organized, sustained program like Neighbourhood Watch takes it a step further, and is a program that should be maximized on our streets and across the city. Residents almost always support one another in time of crisis, or in the face of tragedy. We’ve seen that locally many times – just last week in Leslieville, after the two-alarm fire on Minto Street that had residents checking in on one another and offering assistance to police. That collaboration is inspiring to see, but it’s almost too bad it happens only after a crime or tragedy has already taken place. We need to be proactive if we want to have any lasting effect on our view the safety of our communities. Neighbourhood Watch can Maximize our help us do that. Created in the Neighbourhood 1980s by the Crime Prevention Association of Toronto (CPAT), it Watch groups empowers neighbourhoods, businesses and individuals to take action to reduce crime. Though the familiar signs are up all over the city, indicating the existence of a Neighbourhood Watch group, we’re curious to know how many are actually still active? We’re willing to bet far less than the number of signs still up. The success of the program is entirely dependent on the people of the neighbourhood. Even CPAT acknowledges on its website that programs go dormant when people move on, or they feel the particular reason for starting one in the first place has been solved, or the community once again feels safe. We shouldn’t take that sense of security for granted. We’d like to find out how many Neighbourhood Watch programs are active in Toronto. What’s the experience been, for those involved? Do groups share information, advice – or do they even know other groups exist? We’d like to investigate the possibility for growth and collaboration on a broader scale. The potential to deter crime is in our hands, but it’s only effective when residents work together towards that goal. If you belong to a Neighbourhood Watch group, contact us at nym@insidetoronto.com to let us know.

This baseball playoff race is good stuff

W

ith the Toronto Blue Jays a legitimate playoff contender, be prepared to hear the phrase “good stuff” after every game. A lot. Jays’ commentators and broadcasters will be using it regularly as long as the club remains in the hunt. The expression is in reference to the performance of the starting pitcher that day or night. If he is said to have had his good stuff it means the guy on the mound was in command of all his pitches, which is bad news for the hitters. But the news can be just as bad for the guys in the batters’ box when it comes to the top throwers, even when they don’t have their good stuff. You see, what separates them from the rest of the pack is that they often win even when they have, say, just decent stuff. Or mediocre stuff. Heck, even so-so stuff. Somehow, even when

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY nowhere near their best, the great ones are able to battle away and hang in long enough to give their team a chance to win. It’s truly something to see. Anyhow, as the playoff race heats up, all this talk about good stuff – and occasional lack of it – always gets me thinking about this stuff stuff. You never hear about a catcher having good stuff. Ditto infielders or outfielders. Or designated hitters. Or managers or first and third base coaches. Or ball boys and ball girls. Or mascots, either. Umpires and referees are regularly told to get stuffed, but they don’t have good stuff. When it comes to baseball, good stuff appears to be something only a person on the mound has, or doesn’t

have, depending on the outing. In fact, if you look around in the sports world, good stuff is a pretty scarce commodity in general. Take basketball. NBA players like to stuff, but nobody talks about them having good stuff. NHL players have been known to partake in the rough stuff, but nobody ever says any of them have good stuff. You often hear of teams in fledgling football leagues having their stuff repossessed – occasionally when their players are still wearing it – but do they have good stuff? No way, Jose. The list is long. There is no mention of golfers having good stuff, or tennis players having good stuff, or soccer players having good stuff. Sumo wrestlers regularly eat a lot of stuff, but when was the last time you heard any of them having good stuff?

Good stuff is the domain of pitchers and pitchers alone and is possessed by only a select few. As a writer, I often daydream about what it would be like to have good stuff, if only for one glorious column. But after watching the great pitchers of the game strut their stuff over the years, even on nights when their good stuff tank was running on empty, truth is, I’d be happy to have just their ordinary stuff or runof-the-mill stuff, or nothing to write home about stuff, for that matter, if I could perform the magic they the do with such regularity. Because let’s face it, anyway you slice it, stuff like that is the stuff of which legends are made. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

Local walk supports East York’s St. Clare Inn help women who have mental illnesses

Walk for Linda Houston and other homeless women

At far left, Body + Soul Fitness therapist Joel Fung treats Natasha Alleyne-Martin at the finish of last year’s Linda’s Walk fundraiser. At left, Marianne Vinton, left, and Sue Pahad lead the pack at the 2013 Linda’s Walk at St. Bonaventure’s Church. LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com

S

leeping where she can find a place to lay her head at night and making her way around the neighbourhood with two shopping carts filled with her worldly possessions during the day, the homeless woman reminds some people of Linda Houston. Houston was a 48-yearold homeless woman found dead in front of a North York gas station in 1997, a day before then-mayor Mel Lastman insisted North York didn’t have any homeless people. While some people had tried to rid the Lawrence Avenue and Leslie Street neighbourhood of Houston, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and who lived on a park bench and in a bus

shelter, others such as children from nearby of St. Bonaventure Catholic School and parishioners of the neighbouring Franciscan Church of St. Bonaventure struck up relationships with her. Houston’s death sparked the opening in 2007 of East York’s St. Clare Inn for homeless women with mental health challenges and the launch in 2010 of the annual Linda’s Walk fundraiser that supports the home. With the fifth annual Linda’s Walk approaching Aug. 16, the homeless woman now living in the Lawrence Avenue and Leslie Street area has reminded many people of Houston and rekindled efforts to help homeless women living with mental health problems, said Friar Tom Purcell, the inn’s executive director.

“We’re walking for women like her. We’re conscious of her. People have to be more aware that people in our lives, in our neighbourhoods, are basically homeless and we’re walking for the homeless like Linda,” he said. “These women like Linda are the tip of the iceberg because we see them. Women in society who are homeless are (usually) invisible. They couch surf. They do everything they can to secure a bed for the night. They don’t sleep on grates downtown. That’s what guys do.” Some people have approached the woman to offer assistance or let her know about available services. She has told them she has a case worker and is where she wants to be, Purcell said. “We need to be kind to her, we need to be

responsive but we need to let her make her own decisions,” he said. “She’s an adult and we need to let adults make adult decisions.” Linda’s Walk has accomplished much in a few short years, Purcell said. Donations from the fundraiser cover a quarter of the inn’s annual $200,000 budget, all of which is paid through donations. The two-storey home accommodates up to five homeless women with mental health problems between the ages of 30 and 60, those most likely to fall through the cracks of the social safety net, Residents, who can stay for up to a year, volunteer in the community four hours a week and work with several professionals to rebuild their lives. The walk, initiated

by parishioner Teresa Krijgsman, has also raised public awareness of the need for St. Clare Inn to help homeless women who usually live in the shadows of society, Purcell said. “People know there should be a place for them, a place of safety,” he said. “It’s from the goodness of people’s hearts that we can keep the inn open because we don’t get government funding.” Research indicates as many as 70 per cent of homeless people have mental health challenges. The United Nations has tagged mental illness as a pressing and growing international health concern, Purcell said. With a theme this year of “walk with us and bring a friend,” organizers are hoping to have at least 300 people participate in Linda’s Walk.

“People look forward to it. Whole families come out,” Purcell said. “Things happen as a result of our caring. We’ve got lots more to do, it’s just the tip of the iceberg, but we’re doing good things in the lives of people who need some help.” The five-kilometre Linda’s Walk will be held Aug. 16 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, 1300 Leslie St. south of Lawrence Avenue. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk starts at 9 a.m. The cost to participate in the fundraiser is $25 for adults, $15 for youth aged 12 to 16 and free for children 11 and under. A free T-shirt and barbecue lunch is included with each registration.

One person suffered smoke inhalation after a two-alarm blaze erupted in the basement of a North York highrise Friday. Emergency crews responded to a fire at the bottom of the garbage chute at 170 Chalkfarm Dr., near Jane Street and Wilson Avenue, at 12:48 p.m. “Sprinklers have activated in the basement, but the smoke has migrated throughout the apartment complex,” Capt. David Eckerman said. “We did have people saying that smoke was getting into their units via the garbage chute through the hallways and through the doors. Some people went out to balconies.”

CNE tourney a family SIDEWALK SALE affair for Tyler Offman at >>>from page 1 and quick, but also quite bright, a rub-off from his academic days as a French immersion student at Louis Honore Frechette Public School. Offman plays first base and is a left-handed throwing pitcher. Opposing teams have their hands full as Offman can throw a wicked fastball and his batting average this season is around .600 while also among league leaders in home runs. “I can’t remember having a better year than this one,” said Offman, always optimistic and well focused. “The challenge is to keep it going.” Offman has moved to Vaughan, but the league has allowed him to suit up

for his North York squad as he signed up to play when he lived in the York Mills and Leslie area. His initiation to the game, according to his father Brad, came at the age of four when he played T-Ball. What should get the sparks going for Offman at the CNE tournament is that his older brother, Jonah, once competed at the event. Siblings always like a bit of friendly rivalry. But Offman has something else in the back of his mind – a future in the pros. “I want to take baseball as far as I can and it would be nice (to play the pro game) – if it ever comes true,” said Offman, who spent the first part of the summer at Camp

Northland in Haliburton and also likes helping out with charitable events. “When it’s not school and baseball, I enjoy camp life and making people happy.” And he doesn’t have to look far for assurance that dreams can come true as former North York Blues players Gareth Morgan, Maxx Tissenbaum and Marcus Knecht have all made it to the pros. Morgan, just 18 years old, is reported to have signed a $2 million deal with the Seattle Mariners a few months ago. Knecht and Tissenbaum are with the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays, organizations respectively.

to return to Harbourfront wStreetcars TTC streetcar service will finally return to Harbourfront this fall. Over the last two years, the 509 Harbourfront route running between Union Station and the Exhibition Loop has used replacement buses while the existing streetcar corridor along Queens Quay was relocated and completely rebuilt. The TTC says streetcars will return to the 509 service as of Sunday, Oct. 12.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT YOUTH ARTS GROUP join forces wTTC, The TTC has renewed a partnership with a local youth arts group to create public art for display at stations and on vehicles. The new three-year pact will see Arts for Children and Youth (AFCY) continue to create public murals depicting social themes and

messages on old TTC advertising panels. The art will be mounted in subway tunnels as well as on the sides of buses and streetcars. AFCY showcases the work of 8,000 children citywide, many of whom hail from disadvantaged neighbourhoods. DIG INTO DATA ON IN THE CITY wCYCLING

and Design Jam may just be for you. From Aug. 15 to 17, would-be hackers and planner types will converge upon Bitmaker Labs to play with open data sets provided by the City of Toronto and Bike Share Toronto. Organizers hope the work will culminate in new mobile apps, maps, and other ways to present info on city cycling habits. A $30 entry fee is required to participate. Visit www. bikesharetoronto.com

STATION GOes WIRELESS wBAY

Wireless capable technology is also planned for installation on streetcars and buses in the next couple of years as part of a planned upgrade of the TTC’s existing communications system. But there are no plans as of yet to extend the free Wi-Fi service, provided by BAI Canada, to surface riders.

The TTC has expanded wireless Internet access to one more subway station. Bay Station now joins Bloor-Yonge and St. George as the only stations providing free Wi-Fi access. The ad-supported service, which can be accessed through a mobile device while standing on the subway platform, is part of a pilot project the TTC hopes to eventually extend to the entire subway system.

Running without the advantage of name recognition Mayoralty candidates – at least some of them – get a lot of attention in Toronto municipal elections, and rightly so: the choice Torontonians make for mayor sets the future direction of the city more than any single vote. But there are 44 other elections taking place – and some are more important than others. In 2010, the Ford administration wouldn’t be what it became if Doug Ford hadn’t stepped in to hold onto the Ward 2 seat after Rob Ford left it to be mayor. Like too many other wards with well-known incum-

david nickle the city bents, Ward 2 has become a stronghold... for the Ford family which has held it for 14 years. And Doug is so confident in its strength that he’s suggested his young nephew and intended successor Michael Ford need not even do interviews to take on the job. Is the brand that strong? The Ford brothers have done much to dismantle their citywide brand, and more to the point – motivate some fairly

sophisticated opposition. Enter Andray Domise. A financial advisor and writer who spent his childhood in Rexdale and lives in Etobicoke now, the 33-yearold African-Canadian has been offering up a pointed critique of the Ford brand in terms of its bedrock support in north Etobicoke and among African-Canadian young people. He took on the idea of a Ford stronghold directly in a conversation that took place just prior to Michael Ford registering. “The whole thing has to do with anger and resentment,” he said. “A lot of sup-

port comes from people who feel disconnected and cut off from Toronto’s political establishment. You can see, looking around Etobicoke neighbourhoods, why people get the impression that nobody cares – all they have is half-finished projects and empty promises. If you can’t rely on people who represent you to get the job done, you’re going to end up rallying around somebody who is going to capture all that anger and resentment and passion.” Domise doesn’t hide his own anger, but he is betting residents will eventually let

go of that resentment after being allowed to be more directly involved in deciding the community’s shape. Of course, Domise just a candidate right now – one of 13 running in Ward 2, and one of 12 without the advantage of name recognition, and by no means established to be the best choice among them. So his plans to turn Ward 2 from stronghold to freehold might be premature. But he is running a campaign that at least indicates a sense of the stakes on Oct. 27.
