Ready for CNE’s Rising Star competition Lisa Queen lqueen@insidetoronto.com Last year, nine-year-old Julie Bland wanted to learn how to play the guitar but she was too little to properly hold the instrument. Because her father, James

Bland, is from Hawaii, there are ukuleles in the house so she decided to give one a try and found she loved it. On Monday, Julie will play the ukulele and sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow at the CNE Rising Star Talent Competition.

“I love to perform,” said the budding Taylor Swift, who takes part in talent shows at Arbor Glen Public School, where she is going into Grade 5. “It’s fun. It makes me happy. People say my voice is pretty.” Now in its 28th year, Rising Star is a chance to promote

young Canadian talent aged 12 to 25 years. In addition to Julie, who lives in the area of Don Mills Road and Steeles Avenue, North York’s Benita Singh, Lauren Mandel and Logan Kazman will compete. >>>CONTESTANTS, page 17
