A financial services firm has donated $100,000 to the Humber River Hospital Foundation to assist with construction of Canada’s first fully digital hospital. The donation by Real Wealth Group of Companies will go toward supporting the foundation’s $225-million campaign to bring the new Humber River Regional Hospital to fruition at Keele Street and Hwy. 401. Opening is slated for Oct. 18, 2015. “It’s not too often in one’s lifetime you see a brand new hospital being built in your backyard, and one you will probably use in your lifetime,” said Paolo Abate, CEO of Real Wealth Group of Companies. His 97-year-old grandfather was recently treated and released from Humber’s Finch Site, and many of his employees have ties to the hospital, he said. In additional to the donation, Real Wealth Group of Companies is focusing on its own contribution to the medical field. It’s currently building University Heights, a state-ofthe-art medical and professional office building minutes from the hospital at Keele Street and Finch Avenue.

Road to be named in honour of 19th century hotel owner LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Nineteenth century hotel owner Ann O’Reilly, who ran the family business after her husband’s death, will have a North York street named in her honour. O’Reilly was married to Patrick O’Sullivan, who had come to Canada from Ireland with his parents, according to the North York Preservation Panel. In 1860, the couple opened a hotel with two bedrooms, a bar and meal service on O’Reilly’s father’s property on the northwest corner of Victoria Park and Sheppard Avenue. O’Sullivan died the following year and O’Reilly continued running the hotel. In 1892, their son, Michael, opened the O’Sullivan’s Corners post office in the hotel and served as its first postmaster. “A Sunday drive with dinner at O’Sullivan’s was a favourite treat until the post office and hotel building were demolished about 1954,” the panel said. At the Aug. 12 meeting of North York Community
Council, councillors voted to honour O’Reilly by naming a road near 2205 Sheppard, west of Victoria Park, after her. Mary Ann Cross, a member of the panel and the North York Historical Society, made a presentation at the meeting on behalf of O’Reilly’s greatgreat-grandchildren Margaret O’Sullivan, Denis O’Sullivan and Darlene Hall. “One of the panel’s mandates is to promote heritage and we believe that giving streets heritage names brings the past to life for today’s citizens,” Cross said. “Ann O’Reilly, the strong woman who continued to run the hotel even after her husband died a year after it was opened, is worthy of commemoration.” Although it was first proposed to simply name the street O’Reilly Road, Cross and Don Valley East Councillor Shelley Carroll asked to have her first name used as well. “The great-great grandchildren of Ann O’Reilly and the panel would very much prefer the name of Ann O’Reilly Road instead of O’Reilly Road and I trust that you will vote to name the street Ann O’Reilly Road,” Cross said.

When her husband died a year after opening their small hotel/restaurant in North York in 1860, Ann O’Reilly continued to run it. She now has a road named after her.

Activists gather on the corner of Jane Street and Finch Avenue Tuesday afternoon to protest the expected deportation of five men recently detained by the Canada Border Services Agency.
Yonge and Finch building called both ‘monstrosity’ and an enhancement LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Residents complain a proposed building on Finch Avenue west of Yonge Street would “destroy” the neighbourhood, while the developer insists he has done everything the city has asked of him to make the project feasible. In the end, the development at the southwest corner of Finch and Elmview Avenue was approved by North York Community Council earlier this month, but must still be approved by city council, which meets Monday. A city planning staff report said the four-storey, 70-unit building would “enhance the vibrancy” of the Finch Avenue streetscape. But planning consultant George Belza, representing the
concerns of residents, called the building “this monstrosity.” He accused the developer of cramming too many units into the building to maximize his profits, saying 40 to 45 units rather than 70 units would be reasonable. The developer is also looking to sell the property for $7 million, Belza said. “In my submission, this particular applicant perverted the consultation process,” he said. “He professed himself to be a developer interested in building a high-quality building. Instead, he turns out to be a real estate speculator simply interested in flipping the building.” Scoffing at the suggested $7-million price tag, developer Ommid John Faghani • 2001 Audio Video
discounted accusations he is a speculator. Sarcastically referring to himself as the “evil developer,” Faghani pointed out the development follows the city’s secondary plan and said he has worked to address concerns about the development. “I think we have been more than co-operative with the city,” he said. Despite residents’ concerns, it would be foolish for council to reject the development because it conforms with the secondary plan for the area, Willowdale Councillor John Filion said. “It would be completely shooting everybody, including the community, in the foot to turn down this application or send it into spin cycle because they’re just going to run off to the Ontario Municipal Board

and so will everybody else in the future who sees that even if you follow the rules, you might as well not follow them and just go to the OMB,” he said. “Having said that, this is not the greatest application on Finch Avenue (but) it does follow the rules. It is not what I would have liked to have seen there, it’s not what the residents would have liked to have seen there, but it is permitted, it is allowed, it fit all the rules.” While the building will be permitted if approved by city council, the developer will be required to address a long list of concerns raised by residents, Filion said. “It’s unfortunate, this is one of those times where both sides (residents and the developer) are mad at me but that’s life in the big city,” he said.

What are candidates saying about building a better Toronto?

A
recent study by the University of Toronto says our city has a “major infrastructure funding shortfall” when it comes to financial support from other levels of government and its own property taxpayers. We have said before that when it comes to projects such as transit expansion, roads and public housing, Toronto residents will get the city they are willing to pay for. So far, based on the fourth-place finish we received from the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Livability Survey this week, it seems Toronto residents have been getting an excellent return for their relatively low investment. That’s especially true since Toronto property taxes are, on average, lower than those paid by residents of other Ontario cities, according to the U of T report, Is Toronto Fiscally Healthy? our view The report by the Institute for Municipal Finance and Decide what Governance at U of T’s Munk School of Global Affairs also said we are willing Toronto does not have a problem when it comes to spending of taxto pay for payers’ dollars. “Toronto does not face a fiscal crisis by any means,” the report said. Toronto’s challenge is bringing in more money to pay for needed infrastructure improvements. In responding to the report, City Manager Joe Pennachetti pointed out there is not a lot of room left for cost-cutting in the city, but “we don’t have all the revenues to ensure we can grow a city that we all want.” Most concerning is the estimated $860-million repair backlog faced by Toronto Community Housing, Canada’s biggest landlord. The operation of public housing is fully funded in every province except Ontario. Also, the city still must cover the operating costs of the TTC to the tune of $250 million, funding that used to come from the province. As campaigning becomes more intense in this fall’s municipal election, candidates will be cherrypicking bits of the U of T report as either justification for their past actions or as a call for change. Both arguments will have some merit. This campaign, listen to candidates who can speak about the challenges the city faces, what kind of city we want to build, what are we willing to pay for and who should be paying.

On the cotton candy trail at The Ex I ’m just on my way out the door to head down to The Ex and I’m a man on a mission. It occurred to me that after all these years I couldn’t even fill up a measly sticky note with what I know about cotton candy. All I can offer is that it’s made out of sugar, it’s fluffy and it’s pink. You’d figure I’d know a lot more than that, cotton candy being such a popular Ex staple and all. But I never tried cotton candy when I was growing up. It wasn’t on my snacking radar. I was well aware it was sweet and, like most candy, really bad for you, which normally is enticing enough to reel in any kid. But I never found it visually appealing. But I had a bigger concern: I couldn’t figure out how the heck you were supposed to eat it. I could eat ice cream in my sleep without dripping
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY
even so much as a smidgen on my pillow. Same goes for a Popsicle. For the record, I did both many times as a child much to the amazement of the Sandman. Devouring a chocolate bar was, fittingly, also child’s play. Ditto for licorice or a lollipop. And a piece of cake? It was a piece of cake! Treats are supposed to be user-friendly, right? dining dilemma Not so cotton candy. It’s modus operandi of consumption was not obvious. It seemed to have infinite possibilities. Do you chew it? Do you lick it? Do you stick your face in it and gobble away? Do you tear off little pieces and nibble on them one at a time? Do you let it melt
in your mouth, not in your hands? Do you let it melt in your hands, not in your mouth? Some of the above? All of the above? None of the above? it’s a mystery
I had no idea and for a very good reason. I’d never actually seen anybody eating any. All I ever saw were kids holding the fullsized original purchase, their faces peering out from behind. I also occasionally saw kids with cotton candy stains on their faces wiping sticky fingers on their shirts, but they, too, were holding the whole cotton candy intact. I never saw partially eaten portions in progress. When kids ate it and how they ate it were both a mystery. And here’s another question: what’s the parental holding protocol when it comes to cotton candy? Do they hold their children’s
cotton candy in between gulps or slurps? And what if they took you to The Ex with your siblings and a few friends? Are mom and dad expected to hang on to three or four in each hand while the kids go on the rides? And what’s that thing the cotton candy is on called? And how does it stay attached to it? And what happens if it’s windy – does the cotton candy blow away? And suppose you only eat half and take the rest home, do you put it in the fridge or the cupboard? And how long can you keep it before it goes bad? If you’ll excuse me, it’s time to hit the road. I’ve got some serious cotton candy watching to take care of down at The Ex.

drops in at Mount Sinai
Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley in town to promote Rock N’ Stroll fundraiser, slated for Earl Bales Park Sept. 28 JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com he KISS Army welcomed its newest – and youngest – members last Wednesday when Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley dropped by Mount Sinai Hospital for a quick visit. The duo stopped in to promote the hospital’s Rock N’ Stroll event, a September walk to raise funds for Mount Sinai’s work with expectant mothers who have high-risk pregnancies, taking time to meet with newborns and their parents. “To support a hospital that does so much work with high-risk pregnancies is terrific,” Stanley said, adding the rockers “decided not to wear our eight-inch heels and to leave the makeup in its case.” KISS was one of a number of artists who allowed the hospital to borrow their signature looks for promotional materials – in their case, an image of a baby in stylized Gene Simmons makeup with its tongue sticking out. Neonatal intensive care is near and dear to Stanley’s heart, whose first-born son benefited from specialized care. “If not for the kind of care available in certain cities – and Toronto’s one of them – we probably would have lost our first,” he said. Simmons added proper

health care for newborn infants is essential for people from all walks of life. “All of us have to look out for the next generation,” he said. The hospital’s first Rock N’ Stroll event will take place on Sept. 28 at Earl Bales Park, with hundreds of families expected to come out and push strollers or walk with their loved ones to support Mount Sinai’s world-class, highrisk birth program. “We’re hoping to get about 1,000 families out,” said Mount Sinai director of events Jamie Lamont. “We’re planning to have a couple of live bands going, a big barbecue, a (merchandise) shop and face painting and activities for kids.” He said the visit from two members of iconic rock band KISS underscored the event’s support from the music community. “We approached a number of different rock

artists,” he said. “They all bought into the concept.” Mount Sinai boasts one of North America’s largest perinatal centres and is home to some 7,000 births a year, roughly two-thirds of which are considered high-risk. The hospital’s neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) is the busiest in Canada, offering care to some 1,200 babies a year. Dr. Shoo Lee, the hospital’s head of pediatrics, said the hospital is set to open a new, expanded NICU in the fall. “In the new NICU, there will be private rooms – every baby gets a bed or an incubator and every mother gets a bed,” he said.
“Right now, our NICU is one big room with all the babies right next to each other.” Lee added the hospital’s care for newborn infants and their families, whether inside the NICU or out, is world-class. “The most complicated (pregnancies) come here from all over the country,” he said. “We do things like in vitro surgeries where we can perform surgery on the baby before it’s delivered and laser surgeries.” Funds from Rock N’ Stroll will help cover some of the hospital’s costs, whether for new equipment, programs for babies and parents or other needs.
WHAT: Rock n’ Stroll is Toronto’s most unique fundraising walk supporting high-risk births at Mount Sinai Hospital. According to the event website, the walk promises to be an exciting rock n’ roll-themed day that will boast an army of baby strollers and is fun for the whole family. THE CAUSE: The walk is focused on the critically important care of high-risk births. A pregnancy is high-risk if either the mother or baby have an increased risk of health problems. WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 28. Registration opens at 9 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 10 a.m. WHERE: Earl Bales Park, 4169 Bathurst St. south of Sheppard Avenue in North York. REGISTER: $25 fee for family/team; $10 fee for individuals INFO: Visit www.rocknstroll.ca connect: Tweets by @RockNStroll; www.facebook.com/ mshrocknstroll

Let zoo make own decisions
T
he Toronto Zoo turned 40 Friday, and the best present Toronto could give it is independence. City councillors proved it didn’t have that by sending the zoo’s elephants to a sanctuary, over the objections of keepers and the zoo’s management board. By the time the “ladies” arrived in California last October, after a tug-of-war lasting years, the U.S. Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) had stripped the zoo of accreditation. Those elephants may be happier at the sanctuary; they’re certainly warmer, but the zoo’s prospects are damaged when it’s needed more than ever to breed endangered animals and protect them in the wild, and to teach people how to stop extinctions. That’s work supported by both sides in the elephant battle, but one side, backed by most city councillors, made it harder for the zoo to reach its goals. Glenn De Baeremaeker, a councillor on the zoo board,
mike adler the city says AZA is a “morally bankrupt” institution the zoo shouldn’t rejoin. That’s fine, until you consider animals the zoo has on loan to AZA zoos or is loaning from them, or conservation programs it works on with other AZA zoos. The longer it’s stuck with lower status, the harder dealing with AZA zoos gets, and it can’t get accredited until council agrees that, while the city owns the animals, the zoo decides what’s done with them. Council also rejected the zoo’s proposal in 2012 to run itself through an independent body, as it did from 1974 to 1978. This time, the body would have “prominent corporate, community and business leaders” and no council control. De Baeremaeker calls this “a fiasco,” but Gloria Lindsay Luby, a councillor and zoo board vice-chair, hopes a report on zoo governance is
heard next year by a different council that will “leave the zoo matters up to the zoo.” Lack of independence also hobbled the zoo’s fundraising. Its renewal plan in 2009 – $250 million over 10 years – was abandoned. Contrast that with the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Transformation AGO funding drive; it met its $254-million goal five months early in 2008, then increased it to $276 million. This city stepped up for a place to house fine art. Why wouldn’t Torontonians do the same for the zoo? Our zoo is part of that mounting public infrastructure deficit mentioned in a University of Toronto report last week, only this isn’t chunks falling off the Gardiner Expressway, it’s a $15-million animal hospital the zoo needs, but can’t afford; it’s work to save animals from extinction. It can’t happen unless the next council unchains the zoo and trusts it to be on its own. Metroland Media Toronto reporter Mike Adler is on the city hall beat while David Nickle is on vacation.

trains arrive for testing wExpress The first Union Pearson (UP) Express trains have arrived in Toronto for testing. Reaching a top speed of 145 kilometres per hour, Metrolinx says the new trains will be able to travel between Terminal One of Pearson International Airport to a new station located inside Union Station’s Skywalk in 25 minutes, making two stops along the way at Weston and Bloor GO stations. Eighteen of the “clean diesel” trains were ordered by Metrolinx for the all-day UP service, which can be converted to electric in the future, although the province has not yet announced when that will happen. Metrolinx says the service will cater to businessclass travellers. The service launches next year. UP Express noise wall concerns While there is plenty of enthusiasm for UP’s debut, the service has also faced plenty of criticism. One contentious matter is a plan to erect 10 kilometres
w
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT of concrete sound barriers, or “noise walls,” that Metrolinx says are necessary to limit the noise and vibrations caused by future UP diesel train traffic traveling along the Georgetown South rail corridor. Opponents of the walls, including the Junction Triangle Rail Committee, say the walls are too high and will prevent future electrification of the corridor. Construction of the noise walls, estimated to cost at least $20 million, was scheduled to start this week. planning contest awards wUrban
An urban planning contest for young city builders under the age of 30 has awarded a $5,000 cash prize for a proposal to make Yonge Street more pedestrian-friendly. Richard Valenzona took home the 2014 NXT City Prize for his idea to turn Yonge, between Queen Street and College Street, into a pedes-
trian corridor. In addition to the cash, Valenzona, a graduate student, gets access to “seed funding” of $10,000. Other cash prizes were handed out during an awards gala Aug. 14. The NXT City Prize is co-sponsored by the City of Toronto. For more info, visit www. nxtcityprize.com awards nominations sought wBrownie

stabbed outside Yonge Street restaurant wMan Charges were laid after a 21-year-old man was stabbed in the abdomen outside a North York eatery early Wednesday. Police were called to Jack Astor’s at 5051 Yonge St., north of Sheppard Avenue, for a person with a knife at 1:47 a.m. “When we got on scene, we found a man who was stabbed,” Const. Victor Kwong said. “It actually started as an argument inside the restaurant, but they took it outside and it had escalated and it ended up with this stabbing.” The victim was taken to a trauma centre in serious but non-life-threatening condition. Two people were arrested; one was later released.
A 20-year-old man has been charged with weapons dangerous and aggravated assault. Post carrier robbed of parcel wCanada
Police are looking for a man after a mail carrier was robbed in North York this week. Police said a man wearing a disguise pushed the Canada Post employee from behind and searched through the parcels in his delivery vehicle near Flagstick Court and Sharpecroft Boulevard (Keele Street and Sheppard Avenue area) around 1:40 p.m. Monday. The suspect removed one of the parcels and jumped into the passenger side of a nearby moving vehicle. The postal worker wasn’t
injured. The robber is white, 20 to 23 years old, about six-feet tall with a thin build. Anyone with information can call 31 Division at 416-808-3100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222TIPS (8477). arrested in Finch and Islington carjacking wTeens
Two teens have been charged following an armed carjacking in the Finch and Islington avenues area Monday evening. Police allege two males came up to a man on his driveway, cornered him up against his car and demanded his car keys. One suspect allegedly pointed to his firearm while the other violently grabbed the victim’s hand and took the car keys.
The victim was then pistolwhipped, and his car was stolen. He was taken to hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. Police followed the stolen car to Black Creek Drive just south of Lawrence Avenue where it stopped due to traffic. “The officers safely arrested both the driver and passenger of the stolen vehicle and retrieved a fully loaded handgun, which had one round in the chamber,” police alleged in a news release. Leon McIntyre, 18, of Toronto and a 16-year-old boy who can’t be identified by law face a string of charges, including possessing a loaded prohibited firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possessing property obtained by crime and armed robbery.

kids’ Registration
Let’s get physical! When today’s parents reflect on their childhood, many likely recall seemingly endless days spent playing outdoors. But when today’s kids become tomorrow’s parents, chances are their recollec-
tions won’t recall nearly as much time spent idling the days away under the sun. Many of today’s kids prefer to play a video game on the couch instead of going outdoors

and being physically active. The potential ramifications of youngsters choosing a more sedentary lifestyle are dangerous, as it increases their risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, respiratory ailments and joint problems, among other things. What’s more, numerous studies have found that obese or overweight children are more likely to become obese or overweight adults, which highlights the importance of embracing a physically active lifestyle as a youngster. Parents know it’s not always easy to get kids to be more physically active. But the following are a few tips parents might find useful when encouraging their kids to embrace sports this fall. • Give toys that encourage physical activity. Kids love toys, and their toys will often dictate how they spend their days. Instead of buying the latest video game console, give kids toys that encourage them to be active. This can include balls, bicycles, jump ropes, or even a backyard swingset. Kids who embrace these activities are more likely to choose sports as extra curricular activities. • Reduce time spent in front of the television. Parents who can effectively minimize the amount of time their child spends in front of the television, whether reducing their time
spent watching television or playing video games, will likely be more successful at instilling a love of physical activity as well. Don’t allow televisions in their bedrooms, as that will only make it harder to monitor just how much time kids are spending in front of their TVs. • Remember that physical activity should be fun. Not all kids are athletic, and some will likely bemoan participating in recreational sports leagues. But that doesn’t mean parents should give up on encouraging physical activity. Instead, find a physical activity that your child finds fun and encourage his or her participation. This might be nontraditional kids’ sports like cycling or jogging or activities like dancing, hiking or even bird watching. Once a child exhibits a healthy interest in a physical activity that you have deemed safe, encourage it. • Set a positive example. Kids, especially younger children, look up to their parents and often try to emulate what Mom and Dad are doing. Parents can make the most of that adoration by setting a positive example and being physically active themselves. Go for a nightly bike ride or a walk around the neighborhood with your youngsters in tow. Or put that elliptical machine in the basement to good use.
We also offer tutoring services for both the English and French Curriculum

How to help kids make new friends Kids pick up much more than book smarts and sports skills from school and extra curricular programs—it’s where they first learn to cultivate friendships and build lasting relationships. While many kids find it easy to make new friends, others might need some assistance : • Offer opportunities for socialization. Children should be given the opportunity to explore friendships outside of the classroom where peer pressure might not be so prevalent. Establish a carpool or invite a classmate over for a play date. Unstructured time to play or get to know each other is a great way to establish friendships.
• Discover common interests. Encourage your child to join a club or sports group where he or she can meet other kids with similar interests. Sometimes finding reasons to talk to other children is the most difficult step to making new friends. Sharing a common interest removes this barrier. • Teach proper manners. Children who are polite, well-mannered and know how to follow direction are better equipped to attract friends. Children who misbehave may be shunned by other kids and their parents who do not want the hassle of an unruly youngster coming over to play. Respectful chil-
dren who are honest, trustworthy and capable of sustaining eye contact and making small talk may find it easy to make friends. • Boost confidence levels. As a parent, talk to your children about their strengths and positive attributes. Emphasizing kids’ best traits will increase their self-esteem, and that sense of selfworth can make it easier for them to make friends. A child who is shy and insecure may retreat when meeting new people, but a child who can proudly stand behind his or her accomplishments may attract friends easily.

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com When Adam Solomon takes to the street to perform as part of Scotiabank BuskerFest this month, not only will it be his first time taking part, but also his initiation to the festival itself. “I’ve never been to BuskerFest,” said the African blues musician. “Sometimes I’m not here, I’m travelling with my band. This will be my first experience with BuskerFest.” Born in Mombasa, Kenya, Solomon began performing at a young age, playing the kivoti (flute) and kayaamba (shaker) at village celebrations and festivals, eventually playing alongside some of the country’s most popular bands and musicians. After moving to Toronto in 1992, where he currently lives in North York, he formed his band, Tikisa, in 1995, and continues to tour with them, having made stops at Afrofest, Whistler Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, and the Blues Summit for the Toronto Blues Society. He is also co-founder of pan-African band the Afronubians, a 1997 Toronto African Music

Public Notice – Route Update Iroquois Markham
Brockville Oshawa
Proposed Pipeline Route
Belleville
Port Hope Highway
Greater Napanee Kingston
N
Existing Natural Gas Pipeline Existing Compressor Station Existing Compressor Station (additional compression to be added)
TransCanada would like to take this opportunity to update you on the Eastern Mainline Project. The proposed project is needed to meet firm service commitments following the proposed transfer of a portion of the Canadian Mainline capacity to crude oil service from natural gas services as a part of the Energy East Project. The project is also required to meet growing market demand for new supplies of natural gas from the U.S. Northeast. TransCanada is proposing to add new natural gas pipeline facilities to the existing Canadian Mainline system in Ontario. These new facilities would be added in sections between Markham and the Township of South Dundas, on the southern arm of the Eastern Triangle. The preliminary scope of the project included the construction of approximately 370 km of pipeline. TransCanada has now finalized contracts with commercial shippers and determined a refined scope in order to ensure the appropriate amount of capacity is constructed to meet TransCanada’s existing and new firm contractual commitments. The proposed project scope now includes approximately 250 km of 36 inch pipeline with the addition of nine new 11 MW compressor units to be installed at five existing compressor stations. This project is a vital addition to the Canadian Mainline system and will provide homes, businesses, schools and hospitals in Ontario
and Quebec with a safe and reliable source of natural gas. TransCanada has considered a number of routing options as part of the consultation process with interested landowners and stakeholders. An initial proposed route was shared in project materials that were provided at Open Houses held between May and June 2014 and during other outreach activities this year. During the Open Houses and as part of ongoing conversations with landowners and stakeholders, we received important feedback and have refined the route for the pipeline. We are continuing our engagement efforts and welcome any additional feedback as we refine route deviations. We welcome any questions or comments you may have. TransCanada anticipates submitting our application to the National Energy Board in the third quarter of 2014. Engagement will be ongoing throughout the NEB review process and the construction and operation phases of the project. For more details on the updated Eastern Mainline Project route please visit our website. You can reach us through email or phone at the contact info listed below. Hospital staff takes ‘ice bucket challenge’ >>>from page 1 to dump a bucket of ice water over their heads or to donate at least $100 toward research into ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), with many people doing both. They then issue a challenge to others. After her husband, Haskell Beale, poured water on her head, York set out her challenge. “I challenge myself, as I do every day living with this illness,” she said through a microphone that allows others to hear her speak. York, who was diagnosed six years ago, also challenged her former boss, John Cassaday of Corus Entertainment and Canadian comedians Howie Mandel and Mike Myers. York had water poured over her after about two dozen Sunnybrook staff took part in their own ice bucket challenge. An estimate on the amount raised was not available at press time. The group was led by Dr. Lorne Zinman, a neurologist who heads Sunnybrook’s multi-disciplinary ALS clinic. His daughters, Julia, 15, and Abby, 12, dumped buckets of ice water over their dad after his threat to ground them for a month fell on deaf ears. Beyond the fun, ice bucket challenges are bringing awareness and fundraising to little-known ALS, Zinman said, “I don’t want to lose sight of why we’re here. ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a devastating neurological disease where you become progressively paralyzed. You lose the ability to move, the ability to speak, the ability to swallow and eventually the ability to breathe. Patients with this disease usually die within five years of being diagnosed.” Zinman challenged ALS researchers across Canada to take up the

challenge. Sunnybrook operates the largest ALS clinic in Canada and one of the largest in the world. “We diagnose ALS about 250 new times a year and I can’t tell you how many times I’ll tell a patient they have ALS and they have no idea what I’m talking about. They’ve never heard of it before,” Zinman told The Mirror. “They don’t know if it’s bad. I say Lou Gehrig’s disease and some of them have heard of it, some haven’t. So, the first thing this (ice bucket challenge) has done, it’s put ALS on the front page. We never thought we would see this many people talk about this awful, awful disease because ALS is not common, it’s two to three (people) per 100,000. And now to have a megaphone to make sure people know how bad this disease is, to start talking about it and to raise funds for it, it’s something we’ve been dreaming about.” ALS is a particularly cruel disease, Zinman said, “ALS is arguably one of the worst diseases on the planet. You’re cognitively intact most of the time. You just watch yourself being trapped in your body and suffocate to death,” he said, adding researchers are beginning to make headway on better understanding and treating the disease.
