While some youngsters were busy perfecting their “beats” on iPads inside the Cineplex multi-purpose room at 15 San Romanoway, others were focused on their trailers and movies. Children from the Jane Street and Finch Avenue complex’s summer camp, breakfast and after-school program grabbed one of the 50 iPads funded by the Gordon and Ruth Gooder Charitable Foundation and demonstrated last Thursday what they’ve been working on over the summer. The tech devices were thanks to a grant application by the San Romanoway Revitalization Association (SRRA) last May to the Gooder Foundation, which requested $50,000 for 50 iPads and an instructor to help teach the kids how to use them. For many of the children in the at-risk neighbourhood, this was their first time experiencing an iPad. The kids used the iPads in twohour sessions three days a week to create beats and movies using apps GarageBand and iMovie. >>>GADGETS, page 28

She calls the festival a unique experience for performers, as much as it is for spectators. “It’s just such a unique, interesting opportunity to meet a lot of people from all over the world and to work with people from all over the world. We meet performers from everywhere. The crowds are amazing and fun,” said Silke Hinke, the person behind the clown makeup. Now, it’s also left the 15-month-old North York baby without a right hand and only one finger on the other. Ethan was first admitted to North York General Hospital July 24 after his family doctor became concerned with what a chest X-ray showed after the youngster developed a slight cough and fever. After his lips began turning blue, the young child was rushed by ambulance to The Hospital for Sick Children. After three days of running tests, Ethan was diagnosed with Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) type B, a disease caused by bacterial infection. Typically the disease is mild, but severe infection can occur if the bacteria gets into certain areas of the body, including the bloodstream and brain. Ethan’s brain and heart are free of the infection. Ethan’s legs were amputated just below the knees several weeks ago, and on Friday, surgeons removed his right hand just above the wrist and three fingers and the thumb on his left hand, leaving his middle finger, said Sara Gregory, a friend of Ethan’s mom, Rachel. “Friday was a really brutal day for them,” Gregory said of Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue residents

Rachel has been in the hospital day and night.” A vaccine against Hi is available, and the Canadian Immunization Guide recommends all children receive four doses at two, four, six, and 18 months. Gregory said Ethan had received three out of the four shots, as he’s not old enough for the last dose. As soon as she found out just how dire Ethan’s situation was, Gregory, along with a friend, set up a GoFundMe page Aug. 10 to raise funds for future rehabilitation and therapy for Ethan, noting the family will now rely solely on

Babies and children under age five are especially at risk of contracting the germ. Hi bacteria are spread from person to person and can enter the body through the nose or mouth. They can be passed through coughs and sneezes from an infected person, or touching objects that were recently exposed to an infected person’s mucus or saliva (such as shared utensils, cups, tissues and toys) then rubbing your eyes, nose or mouth.

taking steps in the fight against cancer OneWalk participants can choose to support specific type of cancer FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Ruth Moreira-Lozon is well aware walking 25 kilometres will be a daunting task, but compared to battling cancer it’s nothing to bat an eyelash at. The North York resident will take part in the inaugural Shoppers Drug Mart OneWalk to Conquer Cancer Saturday, Sept. 12 in honour of her nephew, Mitchell. In 2011, at the age of 10, the Dresden, Ontario boy was diagnosed with a brain tumour. A 12-hour surgery successfully removed the tumour, which was located at the base of his skull, but the procedure affected his motor skills and balance. Not being able to use the right side of his body, Mitchell had to learn to do everything with his left side, including writing. It took about a year for Mitchell to get back to where he was before surgery. Sadly, his fight against the disease was not over, as two additional brain tumours were discovered in the fall of 2012. Doctors deemed it too risky to operate, and instead put Mitchell on low-dose chemotherapy for 72 weeks. His last treatment was in June 2014 and while the tumours remain, they have not grown. To celebrate this victory, Moreira-Lozon will walk 25 kilometres through the streets of Toronto to raise funds for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Each participant can choose what type of cancer

their fundraising will benefit, and Moreira-Lozon has chosen brain cancer. She will also walk to honour her uncle, Antonio Costa, who died in Portugal on Dec. 26 at age 77 after a long battle with lung and brain cancer. “The Shoppers Drug Mart OneWalk to Conquer Cancer will be unlike any other charity walk for cancer in existence, and for the first time in our history, walkers will be raising funds for the cancer they care about most,” Sept. Paul Alofs, president and CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, said in a release. Moreira-Lozon, who participated in Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Breast Cancer in 2008 in honour of a friend’s mother, has raised $1,665 to date for the OneWalk event, surpassing the minimum fundraising amount of $1,500. Her husband, Joseph Lozon, will accompany her on the walk, and she’s been training by going on long strolls, the longest one 18 kilometres, she said. “I’ll be tired and hot, but it’s nothing compared to what cancer survivors go through,” she said, adding she also walks three kilometres to her administrative assistant job. The event will start and end at Cabana Pool Bar at Polson Pier, 11 Polson St.

hirty years ago this summer, Toronto lost its innocence when an eight-year-old girl named Nicole was abducted from her Etobicoke apartment building. Children didn’t walk to school alone anymore. Parents looked to strangers with suspicion and filled their kids’ heads with dire consequences if they dared roam carefree. The first Nicole’s Run took place last week to mark the anniversary of Nicole Morin’s long-unsolved missing child case. Though a tragic story itself, the event focused on the positive, offering an opportunity to fundraise for the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP) and a chance to keep Nicole’s case – and those of other missing children – top of mind in the hopes of generating new leads. 30 years, police insist hope our view stillAfter exists for answers. Shaun Narine, superintendent of Toronto Be proactive police 22 Division, told Metroland Toronto: “As with any missin protecting Media ing child, you never stop looking.” The case remains open and your child police have been working nonstop since, trying to find some evidence that would help them solve the mystery. Tips are always welcome, no matter how seemingly insignificant or – perhaps by now, after all these years – fuzzy on detail they may be. Nicole’s Run also serves as a reminder that children shouldn’t be afraid, but instead should be taught to be vigilant about their own safety. Society is a much different place, it’s true, but as long as children and parents are educated, innocence need not be sacrificed. CCCP’s website www.missingkids.ca offers tips on child safety and points out that the traditional advice “don’t talk to strangers” is outdated and ineffective in reducing a child’s risk of abduction and victimization. It’s only in the rarest cases that children are abducted by strangers, and more often, child abductions are committed by people who are known to the child. Visit the site to learn more, including how to protect your child against offenders lurking on the internet. Teaching your children these safety tips in a fun way can make the difference between a child who fears the world, and one who stands confidently before it. Practice “what-if” scenarios and get your child’s friends involved. In honour of Nicole, her family and those families that continue to grieve the loss of their missing children, be proactive in protecting yours.

Reflections on Billy Bishop Airport After having flown Porter Airlines for the first time this past weekend, there’s no doubt in my mind: Robert Deluce’s little airline flying out of the Billy Bishop Airport would benefit from a jet-sized runway. My trip to Boston and back ran late on both ends: going out, because the little turboprop Dash 8 I was to leave on was laid up with mechanical problems at another airport, and Porter couldn’t wrangle another aircraft in time. And then I bumped again – voluntarily, having missed my connection – because the plane needed to shed some passengers for the wet runway. Weather made for another delay on the way back. Big strong jets in Porter’s fleet would be a benefit, at least a benefit to travellers like me, trying desperately to keep their blood pressure in check as they miss connections and arrive home past bedtime. The question of what benefits – or more to the point impacts – jet aircraft will have on the city and its waterfront

In 2014, Toronto council decided to keep those questions open, resisting pressure from Porter and PortsToronto (the new name for the Toronto Port Authority) to give a preliminary OK to start work on extending runways and removing the ban on jet aircraft. Council sent the supplicants back to the drawing board before continuing the conversation. The conversation will be coming up again this year and next, and is getting ready to start, as a pair of reports from Waterfront Toronto and PortsToronto offer a checklist of measures to apply to public consultation, public health and the environmental assessment of the jet option. It is quite a list that points to the flaws in the fast-and-loose process so far. It will be interesting to see what council makes of the plan

when it comes forward this year, more than likely without the guidance of our mayor, who has a conflict of interest on the matter owing to his son’s employment at the airport. That will leave a similarly constituted council enjoying a similar level of autonomy to their predecessors in 2014, when former mayor Rob Ford was effectively out of the debate for different reasons. Assuming the proponents of the expansion take the time to get their ducks in a row, things could very easily tilt the other way. But late on Sunday night, riding the brand-new people mover back from the island through that just-opened pedestrian tunnel, I couldn’t help but think that another solution to the Porter dilemma is much simpler, at least on a personal level: next time I fly to Boston, take a TTC bus to Pearson. There are plenty of jets to choose from there.

TTC marks 30 billion transit trips wthe A major milestone was celebrated when it was announced this week the TTC has passed 30 billion transit trips. Long-time rider Grant Scott was chosen as the stand-in customer for the trip that was likely to have been made earlier in the month, according to the TTC. For the honour, Scott received a free monthly Metropass subscription for one year. Despite near-annual raises to fares, the TTC has seen steady increases in ridership for 11 straight years and will likely set another record for total trips taken in 2015. The 30-billion figure represents the number of trips taken dating back to the TTC’s inception in 1921. the TTC pondering TRAVEL ZONES? wisMULTIPLE Integration of the electronic fare system Presto with the TTC won’t be completed until the end of next year, but a prominent transit advocacy group, TTCriders,

Unlike the TTC’s current single-zone system, Presto users on services like GO Transit are charged higher fares based on the distance travelled. That has TTCriders worried the TTC, which relies on fares for 70 per cent of its revenue, might be enticed to establish multiple travel zones, which could impact Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York residents who must travel further on average to get to other areas of the city. EXPANDS TRIPS ALONG KITCHENER LINE wGO

GO Transit will boost off-peak rail trips on the Kitchener Line as of early September, the regional transit agency has promised. The move will mean 14 additional trips during the midday Monday to Friday between Union Station and Mount Pleasant GO Station

in Brampton. GO will also increase bus trips between the two destinations. The moves are part of 10-year expansion plan for the GO network which includes boosting the number of weekly trips on the Kitchener line from 80 to 250. THE SOUNDS OF TRANSIT wDOWNLOAD

KickStart gives kids a heads up in soccer skills Toronto FC helps launch the free, city-wide program CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com It was all about having fun at The Hangar at Downsview Park last Thursday where the full Toronto FC First Team came out to play soccer with more than 200 kids from 15 Toronto Community Housing communities across the city. “This is a lot of fun to be able to spend time with the kids and to see smiles on their faces,” said Michael Bradley, captain of the Toronto FC. He was joined by his teammates to launch the fourth year of KickStart, a free eight-week soccer program for youth aged six to 12. MLSE Foundation, in partnership with Toronto FC, Kia Canada Inc., and Toronto Community Housing launched KickStart, which hires staff and trains youth mentors from under-served communities to deliver the program. Bradley offered a couple of tips for the future soccer players

as they went off into groups to practise basic skills of the game. “To enjoy it and to have fun,” he said. Greg Spearn, interim president and CEO of Toronto Community Housing Corporation, agreed, encouraging the kids to just have fun playing the beautiful game. “This is the best part of my job,” said Spearn, who addressed the children at the launch event. “I hope you have an amazing time this year.” Brothers Shayan, 11, and Shahvir, 10, were excited about meeting all the professional soccer players, especially Bradley, their favourite player. “The team captain really shows leadership,” said Shayan, who also won a leadership award at his school near Victoria Park and Sheppard Avenue. Abdi, Ayub, and Mustafa from the Mabelle community in Etobicoke all agreed they like watching the Toronto FC because the players work as a team. “They don’t hog the ball,” Abdi said. Mustafa added he liked playing soccer to be with his friends.

Gadgets to be used by kids Spazz is a self-taught performer in local Boys and Girls Club >>>from page 1 Once the school year starts, the iPads will be utilized by elementary and middle-school students in the SRRA breakfast and after-school program, as well as participants in the Jane and Finch Boys and Girls Club. “A lot of these kids are from single-parent households and none have iPads at home,” said Stephnie Payne, executive director of the SRRA, adding the children went on two trips to the Apple store at Fairview Mall to see how the gadgets work. Claude Watson School for the Arts student Jacob Spence, who’s been helping his father, former director of education for the Toronto District School Board Chris Spence, with instructing the youngsters on how to use the iPads, said he creates movies with his friends and even had an entry in his school’s film festival. “I think it’s great for the kids,” the 12 year old said of the funding. Michelle Pack, 10, said she created music using the piano, drums and violin. “It’s good, fun, interesting,” she said, adding she’s previously used an iPad to play games and do homework. Adenike Olaosebikan inadvertently created a jazz piece along with hip hop, and also tried her hand at making “scary and happy movies,”

ing contractor, wanted to find ways to give back. “We try to stick to his values,” said Sproule, who was on hand Thursday to see what the kids had worked on. “This (funding) was a pretty easy decision to make and made a great deal of sense. We were more than happy to support these kids and even happier to see the outcome.”

Hinke and her team of clowns will be stationary in the children’s play area, located between College and Gerrard streets. Hinke will have a team of as many as 10 face painters and balloon sculptors at a time during the festival, including herself. Hinke enjoys working with children, and loves the atmosphere of the festival and how children get excited about the shows. Hinke, a single mother of two, got her start clowning 19 years ago, but the disposition for the art was there well before. An athletic and academic child, she participated a lot in sports growing up. She was on the Canadian national team in rhythmic gymnastics for three years. When she entered university, she became a performance dancer.

Upon graduating with degrees in psychology and math for commerce, she started teaching dance and drama, mostly in schools. “I just wasn’t a nine-tofiver. It’s just not in me. I’m a bit of an intellectual, but I also have a very creative side,” said Hinke, who lives near Yonge

Street and Finch Avenue. About two decades ago, a relative who was a clown with the Ringling Brothers circus died, leaving behind his costumes. So Hinke taught herself clown work and that’s how she got her start in the business. She now has a crew of approximately 25 face painters and balloon artists who go out to such things as festivals and corporate functions. She had no idea she would continue doing it for so long. She also continues to teach dance and drama in schools. Her own children, now aged 16 and 18, have joined their mom as clowns, both getting their start at BuskerFest at a young age. One of them continues to do it still. “The kids really liked going to them because I think they found it a novelty that another child was doing it,” Hinke said.
