Residents weigh in on future of Allen Road LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com In an ideal world, Vito Valela would like to see Allen Road buried underground and extended downtown. That way, the expressway could still serve the needs of motorists – and even fulfill its original purpose, before the provincial government killed the idea in 1971 in the face of opposition, of carrying drivers downtown – while above ground it could be turned into land that better caters to the needs of cyclists, pedestrians and neighbourhoods cut in half by the road. “Allen Road is the dividing line between the haves and the have nots. It (tunnelling Allen) would probably rejoin the communities. Everyone gets what they need,” Valela told The Mirror at a city public consultation meeting Monday night at the Ancaster Park Community Centre. Tunnelling Allen underground is one of the options the city is consid>>>allen, page 5

t exactly 12 minutes after 12 p.m. on the 12th day of the 12th month of 2012, Anna Chekhman and J.K. Choi walked down the aisle of the wedding chapel at the North York Civic Centre. It was 26-year-old Chekhman who picked the 12-12-12 date for the nuptials and then, for added luck, waited until 12:12

before she let the ceremony begin. A more go-with-the-flow guy, 25-yearold Choi was content to agree with whatever made his bride happy. “He asked, ‘When do you want to get married?’ and I said ‘Dec. 12 on 2012.’ It was my little joke,” said the new Mrs. Choi, who grew up in the area of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue. “It’s just because it’s kind of like a comfort thing. It can’t be bad. It’s a little bit

more special. It’s the last chance (to have a wedding on a day with repeating numbers). There’s no 13th month.” Choi, from Korea, said his new wife can be superstitious, something that doesn’t bother him in the least. “I’m not at all,” he added. The couple, who live in Downsview, met at a bar about two years ago. It was love at first sight. >>>getting, page 3

Mirror’s Santa the nutcracker: seasonal celebration Fund collecting new toys for needy families North York Mirror readers can help their community newspaper make this Christmas brighter for a number of local families. The Mirror’s Santa Fund is collecting new, unwrapped toy donations at its office this month. Donations will be distributed to families in need by Mirror staff in partnership with the Toronto charity Holiday Helpers. Families being helped this holiday season are in need of warm clothing along with toys and electronic items from their wish lists. Donated items of toys, clothing and electronic items must be new and unwrapped. They can be dropped off at The Mirror’s office, 175 Gordon Baker Rd., in the McNicoll and Victoria Park avenues area. For details, call managing editor Paul Futhey at 416-774-2256 or email pfuthey@ insidetoronto.com

At left: Alex Servoz and Zenon Zubyk perform. Bottom row: Alexandra Berry, centre, tightens her ballet shoes before heading on stage; dancers warm up; dancers wait in the wings for their cue to perform. The student production will be staged Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door for $20. Cardinal Carter is located at 36 Greenfield Ave.

Getting married by the numbers >>>from page 1 She is talkative, always smiling and bright, qualities that appealed immediately to Choi. He is tall, skinny and a good listener. That combination was so attractive to Chekhman she dumped her thenboyfriend and began dating Choi. “I just imagined the man in my life exactly like him,” she said. About a dozen friends and family gathered in the chapel to witness the wedding and clapped when Rev. Leonard A. Tarnowski declared the couple husband and wife. “I think this is a very unique day, a very beautiful day,” Tarnowski told The Mirror following the service. “The couple is absolutely lovely. It’s an honour to do the service for them.” Chekhman is taking the last name of her husband, who is a personal trainer. “Mr. and Mrs. Choi, I like that,” said the graphic designer. The couple is planning to honeymoon sometime in the future in Korea.

Work together to ease strike impact

T

his week, Toronto residents saw students from numerous high schools take to the streets to protest the loss of extra-curricular activities at their high schools as part of the continuing battle between the Ontario governour view ment and its public school teachers. Next week, however, the heat Sharing of is really going to be turned up effective ideas as a one-day strike by public elementary school teachers in encouraged Toronto is expected at some point before next Friday, Dec. 21. The union representing the elementary school teachers, the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO), has been calling one-day strikes in school boards across the province since Monday of this week. The ETFO is giving boards, and parents, 72 hours notice of the impending strikes. Perhaps by the end of this week or early next week, Toronto residents with children in the public system should know what day the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) will strike the elementary schools. The TDSB will close the doors of its schools with students from junior kindergarten to Grade 8. The board has sent home letters to parents encouraging them to start making alternate arrangements for their elementary school children now. For thousands of parents this is going to be a costly, complicated and stressful day. But by working together in our neighbourhoods and school communities we can make it easier for those facing challenges. Communities in other boards have come up with some good ways of dealing with the strikes beyond taking the day off work or sending the kids to other family members. For instance, the City of Ottawa announced it would be extending its before and after school programs on the day of the strike. We expect to see an announcement from the City of Toronto shortly that it will be doing the same. Also, other organizations are stepping up. In the case of Ottawa again, the Ottawa Senators said they’d offer a full-day hockey camp that day for kids aged five to 12. Hello, Toronto Maple Leafs – there’s a great idea. There are many other great ideas out there parents can start sharing with each other right now, so that those who are able to help with child care on strike day can do so while those who must go to work can also do so. newsroom

To the editor: I think it is time those who want Olivia Chow to run for mayor of Toronto to get a grip on reality. This is nothing more than a cynical and opportunistic attempt to grab power by the left. This will only help return the left to the good old days of the David Miller administration when the wards of the inner city tail were able to wag the dog. It was good times for those who were able to feed at the public trough, but not so good for the rest of us in Toronto. The last person we need for mayor is this ex-crusader for the downtrodden masses. By running amok with their leftist agenda, she and others on the left have eroded the ability of our police service to do its job. If she should return to Toronto politics, I would encourage her to move her home to one of our risky areas in the city so she can reap the full benefit of our eroded police service. Isn’t it also a basic human right to be able to live safely and in peace? Chris Belfontaine

Shaping up to be a truly forgettable NHL season

F

ess up, all you NHL fans out there pining over missing your beloved hockey. Even if this lockout drags on until January and the league ends up with just a 48-game or 60-game season and the New York Islanders end up playing the Florida Panthers two or three fewer times than they the normally do, are you really going to lose any sleep over it? As much as you love the game of hockey, don’t you think an 82-game schedule, is a tad long? Come on now. Be honest. You know it. I know it. The owners and players know it. Heck, deep down even Don Cherry knows it. The fact is, the wear and tear is way too much on us all. The movers and shakers behind the scenes are doing everybody – and the game – a humongous favour by

shortening the season. Too bad they’re only going to be shortening one season. At least that’s how we all feel today, with autumn still in the air. The moment the temperature drops that same endless NHL season doesn’t seem so long after all. In fact, everything about the league suddenly makes sense. Even the Islanders and the Panthers facing off two or three too few or too many times. For some reason amnesia automatically sets in when winter arrives. Old Jack Frost takes his first nip out

of your schnozz and presto, you immediately forget everything about the NHL that drives you up the wall. You forget that outside of emotional rivalries such as the Leafs/Canadiens, Oilers/Flames and Penguins/Flyers, for example, regular season games have about as much hitting as a pairs figure-skating ice dance samba. You forget about how you’re constantly lulled to sleep by the neutral zone trap and the left wing lock and are so thankful that they just don’t cut it during the playoffs, even though you have no idea what the heck either one of them is, let alone which is which. You forget that every team – except your favourite one, of course – seems to qualify for the postseason. You forget that the team that finishes first overall often gets bounced

in the first round. In short, you forget that no matter how good you thought the regular season game was that you saw last night, it will not even closely resemble the worst playoff game of the year. And you forget that ticket prices will likely go up for the playoffs, and we’re talking waaaaay up. Yes, even if half the season is cancelled. Yeah, you forget all that when those first snowflakes fall. Which means only one thing: the owners and players must be praying for the nastiest winter ever. Because fans are going to have a heck of a lot more to forget about this year than ever before. n Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. Allen poses several challenges >>>from page 1 ering for the road’s future. Other options include doing nothing; making minimal modifications; making significant improvements to traffic operations, the public realm, streetscaping, landscaping and integration with the surrounding neighbourhood; turning Allen into an arterial road with lower speed limits; closing part or all of the road. The Allen poses several challenges, according to a city report. For example, drivers experience some of the longest traffic line ups in the city; intersections, especially at Lawrence and Eglinton avenues, are considered among the most challenging in the city; retaining walls and bridges will soon require reconstruction; there is poor access to TTC stations; the road is not well integrated with the surrounding neighbourhood; the interchange of Allen and Hwy. 401 is a major obstacle for local traffic,

cycling and pedestrians. Whatever the future holds for Allen, Valela stressed the road is a necessary expressway for cars. “I don’t think we can live without Allen Road, realistically,” said the resident of the Wilson Heights Boulevard and Sheppard Avenue area. “I think they (city officials) have to be vehicle-sensitive as much as they have to be pedestrian and alternative(users other than vehicles) sensitive, so put it underground.” Overhearing Valela’s support for burying Allen, Paul Greenwood said tunnelling the road would be extremely expensive and take years. Valela agreed. “I agree. I’m just talking about in my ideal world,” he said. Greenwood, who lives in the area of Lawrence Avenue and Allen, is worried the city may put too much emphasis on the needs of cyclists at the

expense of motorists. “I see more of this bicyclists’ push. It doesn’t make sense to me to put weight on the environmental push and get rid of (Allen),” he told The Mirror. “To get rid of it, you lose the connection from north to south (for vehicles) and what are you left with?” Joe Genua, who lives in the area of Keele and Wilson, said Allen is serving its function well as it is now. “Ideally, if they stuck with the initial plan, it would have gone all the way downtown. That would have worked best for me but it works for me as it is. It works for what it is, it’s a short hop (on a north-south expressway).” He would like to see a large parking lot built at the bottom of Allen to accommodate drivers who want transfer to the future Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown LRT line when it is completed. Buick enters 2013 with compact CUV

Buick is changing right before our eyes. Once seen as the conveyance of the blue-hair set, the average age of Buick buyers is now 57 and falling as it introduces new models appealing to a younger audience. Along with the Verano, its first luxury sedan in the compact segment is the 2013 Encore that marks Buick’s first entry into the small crossover arena.

Not only does it have traditional Buick design cues like the “waterfall” grille and portholes on the hood, but it has the same new, and pleasing touches like stitched leather, blue headlight surrounds and interior ambient “ice blue” lighting as the LaCrosse and Enclave. Under the hood is a 1.4-litre, variable valve timing inline turbocharged four-cylinder producing 138

hp and 148 lb/ft of torque. That powerplant sits way down in the engine bay where you might think a bigger four-banger or even a V6 would fit such is the flexibility of the Gamma architecture. Gamma can accommodate frontor all-wheel-drive and so the Encore is available as standard with FWD and optional with AWD for $1,950. In Canada we will be get three trim

levels starting at (FWD/AWD) Convenience, $26,895/$28,845; Leather, $30,190/$32,140; Premium Package, $32,505/$34,455 not including $1,500 for shipping. Encore comes with all the safely features one now expects such as traction control, ABS, StabiliTrac pitch and yaw control and adds, as standard, 10 air bags and cornering brake control which steps in to add braking if it senses the driver is going a little too quickly into a turn. Optionally available is lane departure warning (turned off and on by a button on the dash), forward collision alert and front/rear audible parking assist. Also standard is Buick’s first use of the Bose Active Noise Cancellation system. Most makers employ two microphones (one front, one rear), but Buick has three (two front, one rear) that “hear” unwanted noise and then use the Bose sound system speakers to send out counter-tones. Buick engineers went to great pains not to just deal with external noise but aerodynamics. For instance there are little vertical strakes at the trailing edge of each “C” pillar that cut drag and improve fuel economy. Another notable feature is the standard voice-activated IntelliLink full-colour seven-inch display. Move up to the Leather Package and it adds dual zone climate control, heated leather front seats, heated steering wheel and remote vehicle start. The Premium package builds on the Leather with lane departure warning, rain sensing wipers, premium Bose Audio, XM Satellite Radio, front and rear park assist, Forward Collision Alert, and 18-inch chrome wheels. Encoreπs pixie of a powerplant delivers a lot more power than you’d expect aided significantly by the gear ratio spread of the automatic that shifts transparently under normal

driving conditions. Buick has a patented noise abatement system called QuietTuning that sees thick acoustic glass, triple door seals, and battens of insulation used to quell noise. Coupled with the Bose noise cancelling system, you don’t hear much coming in from the outside. Suspension is MacStruts and coil springs at the front and a compound crank-style torsion beam at the back with coils. Cargo volume behind the rear seats is 532.4 litres (18.2 cu ft) and 1,379 litres (48.4 cu ft) folded. Towing is not recommended. The Encore has all the luxury look and feel that a Buick buyer expects. You won’t find the cheap stuff in an Encore. For instance there are three interior trim combinations, one being a two-tone coffee and cocoa brown you might expect to find on a competitor costing twice as much. And that is one of the reasons Buick is changing in front of our eyes. The name is the same, but Buick now gets it and that’s why they are seeing a sharp increase in buyers coming over from the imports..

Three design awards for Kia Kia won three design awards in the Automotive Brand Contest 2012, the latest of a series of honours for the Korean brand’s design team headed by Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer. The new Kia cee’d – launched in June 2012 – triumphed in the exterior category and also

received an honorary special mention for exceptional innovation in the interior category. In addition, the high profile jury selected the Kia GT as the winner of the concept award. The rear-wheel drive sports sedan design study celebrated its world premiere in September 2011 at the Frankfurt

Malibu LTZ gets a Turbo boost The Turbo Malibu has 259 hp and, more importantly, 260 lb/ft of torque that sees it sprint from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds, which is equal to a lot of sporty cars on the road. Top speed is 248 km/h .And it does this with a fuel consumption rating of 10.1 L/100km city and 6.6 L/100km highway. The turbo is standard on the topline LTZ model (as tested) with a list price of $30,650 and optional ($1,620) on the 2LT model one

rung below. The turbo is part of a four-cylinder strategy for the 2013 Malibu with the 2.0-litre joined by a standard 2.5-litre and a specially tuned 2.4-litre that is part of the optional GM e-Assist hybrid system on the Malibu Eco model. The current 2.0-litre uses direct injection, variable valve timing and a twin-scroll turbo pumping at 20-psi. But there is more to it than that. The heads use the same metal-

lurgy as the mighty Corvette ZR1. The special aluminum pistons have oil spray cooling. There is a two-stage thermostat and twostage variable-displacement oil pump that enhance efficiency. The exhaust is specially configured to reduced back pressure with the bonus of a more throaty sound quality. Besides the engine, Chevrolet has come a long way with its interiors and the LTZ, being the

top-of-the-line, was completely equipped with a host of features. There is not enough room to list them all but you get leather seating, dual-zone climate control, ambient blue interior lighting and remote start not to mention power everything. Also part of the LTZ package is Chevy MyLink with a seven-inch colour touch-screen radio, Bluetooth and USB port. With its sportier engine, the Malibu LTZ Turbo is also tuned for improved handling. The MacPherson strut front end features dual-

path mountings which separate the transfer of spring damper loads to the body for a smootherfeeling ride overall and enhanced stability when cornering. New for the turbo model are internal rebound springs for the front struts that give the Malibu improved body motion control and roll damping in handling manoeuvres. A direct-acting front stabilizer bar gives a sharper and more immediate feeling to steering inputs. It is mounted to the rear portion of the engine cradle with

each end of the bar connected to the front struts. At the rear, the four-link rear suspension includes an upper camber link, two lower links and a trailing link. GM’s Stabilitrak with traction control is standard on all Malibus and modulates the brakes at the individual wheels, reduces power or does both to help the driver remain in control. The new Turbo model should give Chevrolet a big boost in the mid-size sedan segment.

FIRST LOOK: HYUNDAI ELANTRA GT 2013

■411 ON THE GT: The GT is actually not a sports sedan as you might assume but a five-door hatchback, or wagon depending on your point of view, that replaces the current Elantra Touring that was steady seller in the compact family hatch department. But the Touring was actually ahead of Hyundai’s new Fluidic Sculpture design language. The GT remedies that with several cues such as a large, hexagonal grille and double upwardly flowing character lines. In this class, utility is very important, with Hyundai claiming more interior volume and maximum cargo capacity than the competition with 531 litres behind the second row split/fold seats and a total cargo volume of 1,444 litres. The GT is positively festooned with storage areas such as front and rear bottle holders, front and rear cupholders, a front console/ bin with auxiliary audio ports, a nifty extra power point in the front passenger’s footwell area for a laptop/etc and, on some models, a cleanable storage tray under the rear cargo floor. Power comes from Hyundai’s “Nu series 1.8-litre, four-cylinder engine with twin cams and variable valve timing producing 148 hp and 131 lb/ft of torque. It is equipped with a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic

Hyundai never sits still when it comes to replacing models even if they are already successful in their segment and that certainly applies to the 2013 Elantra GT.

The GT is actually a five-door hatchback with 551 litres of cargo volume behind the rear folding seats or 1,444 litres with the seats folded. A premium touch on the 2013 Elantra is a repeater turn signal integrated into the outside mirrors.

Under the Hood: Power comes from a 1.8litre inline, four-cylinder engine producing 148 hp and 131 lb/ft of torque driving the front wheels through a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2013 GT is the third model in the Elantra compact joining the Sedan and just released Coupe. The GT features three driver-selectable modes, a first in the segment.

The interior of the 2013 Elantra GT makes full use of Hyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture design language with a S-curve through the dashboard creating a sportscar-like feeling.

both driving the front wheels. Fuel consumption is rated at 7.2/4.9L/100 km city/highway with the manual and 7.3/5.0L/100 km for the automatic. Where the GT differs significantly from the Sedan and Coupe is in the chassis. It is based on the i30 model that Hyundai sells primarily in Europe and is thus dialed more towards the handling response side than the comfort side. The coil spring over MacPherson struts suspension at the front is modified for a more sporty feel and uses outside-supplier gas shocks from Sachs for improved body roll response. Pricing for the base GL with sixspeed manual starts at $19,149 and tops out at $26,349 for the automatic SE that has all the bells and whistles. But even the base car comes with a bunch of goodies such as heated outside mirrors, the DSSM system, heated front seats, outside temperature reading and trip computer, cruise control and air conditioning with a cooled glove box for various beverages. Could there be an Elantra Convertible in the future? If there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s never say never when it comes to Hyundai. – Metroland Media

covering roads in cash rather than borrowed money. To help fund that, there will be some cuts to fire, police and ambulance, and projects near and dear to the hearts of downtowners and the left wing on council – such as arts funding – aren’t getting the attention they might have under another mayor. But generally, this is a budget that doesn’t take many risks. There is no attempt to remove the land transfer tax. The budget doesn’t pretend to freeze property taxes. It doesn’t make an attack on downtown services particularly, just as it doesn’t reward suburban communities, especially. It does make a significant and potentially damaging change to the way the city funds repairs, using cash instead of borrowing – but that is a serious double-entry accounting problem, and not an especially signifi-

cant political problem. It shouldn’t surprise that the Ford administration is taking it easy on this one, or at least playing things a little more slyly. Last year, Mayor Ford could still point to a strong electoral mandate as a basis to push hard on an agenda that was both aggressive and divisive. That mandate is still there in theory. But the mayor and the agenda are walking dead in these weeks before Christmas, as the budget committee wraps up its deliberations. They’ve been a sullen affair; budget committee chair Mike Del Grande presided over public deputations early this week, underneath the projection of a growing spreadsheet on which he costed every single thing Torontonians asked for in their three minutes. But again, that’s nothing compared to the marathon meetings Mayor Ford held last year. Spreadsheets have nothing on sleep deprivation. And from the look of things, 2013 has nothing on 2012.

hat a difference a year makes. Last year, the operating and capital budget was a battleground between left and right, downtown and inner suburbs, Margaret Atwood and Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford. The budget committee wrestled with hot-button issues such as the closure of city zoos and the denuding of public libraries. It was enough of a fight that Toronto Council finally took part of it away from the budget committee and Mayor Rob Ford, and set the stage for a dramatic power shift in which council wrestled pretty much everything away from the mayor. Mayor Ford and his supporters warned that in this year’s budget, council and the city would have to go through the war all over again. As it’s turned out, that’s not so much the case. The 2013 operating and capital budgets are definitely still a thing of the Ford administration. The budget will see tax dollars invested in road repairs to unprecedented levels – driven even higher by the need to repair and rehabilitate the crumbling Gardiner Expressway –

If the courts declare the mayor’s office vacant next year, Toronto Council could be faced with a very expensive choice in considering a byelection. According to the city’s budget chief Mike Del Grande, the cost of such a byelection could be as much as $14 million after events play out. “My responsibility is going to be to point out the realities of the budget. Everybody should factor in that concept,” said Del Grande. “There’s a cost of doing things.” The cost Del Grande floated

going you would have to make up that money.” Del Grande said theoretically a byelection could push up the property tax increase to 2.3 per cent from the projected 1.75 per cent. However, the pressure could be felt instead in the 2014 budget, if the city simply allocated money currently being squirrelled away for the 2014 general election. Trinity-Spadina Councillor Adam Vaughan, who is considering a run for mayor, said a byelection could cost taxpayers a great deal. “It’s why the reckless behaviour of asking lobbyists for money while they have business in front of council is such a poor, poor and terrible thing to do,” said Vaughan. “If the mayor had just simply followed the rules we wouldn’t have to have this debate about the rules.”

following city clerk Uli Watkiss’ budget presentation last week was considerably higher than initial estimates that taxpayers would pay out $7 million for a city-wide byelection to replace Mayor Rob Ford if his court appeal is unsuccessful. Watkiss pointed out the city would also be on the hook for campaign donation rebates, to the tune of an estimated $2 million. And Del Grande said if it’s a city councillor that’s elected mayor, there could be an additional byelection the city will have to cover, prior to the regularly scheduled 2014 municipal election. Del Grande didn’t say whether he would support a byelection. “I’m just saying that when people talk it costs money. The talk is expensive. People better think and if that’s where we’re

understand the Captain’s interest in her, and she makes a stunning appearance in the party scene in a brilliant red dress, one of the many fine costumes Sheila LaCasse has designed. David Haines plays the impish sidekick Max, who ultimately drives a wedge between the Captain and Elsa, mocking their romance in How Can Love Survive and urging accommodation of the Nazi regime in No Way to Stop it. These two songs were dropped from the film, and are less well known. The familiar songs are welcomed like old friends: The title song, My Favorite Things, The Lonely Goatherd and Climb Every Mountain. This last song is a stirring anthem for the Mother Abbess, played with great warmth and affection

by Barbara Boddy. Joe Cascone places his usual directorial stamp on the proceedings, never allowing sentimentality to engulf the stage. He clearly trusts the material as originally written, allowing each plot development to happen naturally. There are moments of sweetness, but these are balanced by character-driven humour. No matter how many times you have seen this story before, it comes across as fresh and invigorating as a walk in the Austrian hills. The Sound of Music is playing at York Woods Library Theatre, 1785 Finch Ave. W., until Sunday. For tickets visit www. odgers & Hammerstein’s final show, The Sound of Music, has always had a reputation for being overly sentimental and unbearably sweet. Yet, as originally written, the show has much more of an edge. The Civic Light-Opera Company has gone back to the original script by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse and it is very effective when done with straight-forward sincerity, as it is here. In one of those stimulating matches of a performer with a role, Finnie Jesson is our heroine, Maria. She sings Maria’s songs with exuberance and has tremendous warmth and connection with the seven children. All seven of the children add sparkle with their performances. They carry off Larry Westlake’s choreography for So Long, Farewell simply and expressively. As the eldest, Liesl, Ashley Cronk has a charming duet with Daniel Cornthwaite, playing Rolf, for Sixteen Going on Seventeen. Joe Cascone plays Captain Von Trapp, finding ways to delicately shade the performance so that the Captain is not shown as such a cold tyrant in the opening scenes, as is often the case. He is still a firm disciplinarian, but believably transformed by Maria as she brings music back into his home. The Captain’s flirtations with the rich widow, Elsa Schraeder, have a sense of innocent fun. Stephanie Douglas takes on the role of Elsa, making this a fascinating character. We can easily
