New Circles is moving to a bigger site to accommodate the community’s growing needs.

The organization, which provides clothing to residents of Thorncliffe Park, Flemingdon Park and Victoria Village out of 10 Gateway Blvd., is moving April 1 to 161 Bartley Dr., about five kilometres east near Victoria Park and Eglinton avenues.

Operations will shut down at the current location in mid to late March to prepare for the move, said executive director Alykhan Suleman.

Angulo’s proud mother, Jessica Navaro, expressed her gratitude to her son’s friends and coaches at the school for their support.

“They’re amazing. They didn’t have to do this,” said Navaro, noting that even after moving to Woodbridge two years ago, she didn’t mind the long commute so that Angulo could continue to attend Chaminade. “The sacrifice was worth it. This is such a great school.”

His coaches had nothing but kind words for Angulo.

“Kevin is truly one of a kind,” said Andre Metivier, his track coach. “He’s what we would call ‘the whole package.’”

Metivier applauded Angulo for his strong character, good academic standing, and exceptional athletic ability.

“These accomplishments are well deserved,” Surbek said.

goal after he studies communications and plays soccer at the University of Pittsburgh: to make the Major League Soccer draft and hopefully play for his hometown team, the Toronto FC.

Legislative page sees politics in his future FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com At age 12, Kevin Huang is already a published author, accomplished musician and athlete, and an army cadet.

Now, the Grade 7 Zion Heights Junior High School student can add legislative page to his impressive resume.

During his term at Queen’s Park, which will run until March 6, Kevin and 21 other pages will arrive at 8 a.m., dress in their uniforms and prepare the Legislative Chamber for the morning’s debate.

Duties include delivering messages and water to the 107 MPPs, along with meeting key parliamentary figures and learning about Ontario’s parliamentary system of government.

Pages will also take math and legislative classes while downtown.

“I have an interest in politics and thought it would be a great way to see what happens,” Kevin said of why he applied for the highly competitive program. “I feel really lucky and excited to finally meet some of my role models.”

The legislative page program is open to Ontario students in grades 7 and 8 who have an interest in current affairs, have an academic average of 80 per cent or higher and get along well with their

peers and adults.

Students must submit an application that includes an essay outlining achievements, community involvements and contribution to the legislative page program.

Along with being in the Royal Canadian Army Cadets, Kevin plays cello, violin, soccer and hockey. A writer, he’s even had some poems published by the Poetry Institute of Canada.

And working as a legislative page runs in his family, as older brother Jason, whom The Mirror also wrote about, went through the program two years ago.

And what’s Kevin looking forward to the most during his time as a page?

“Having lunch with the premier (Kathleen Wynne) and my MPP (David Zimmer),” he said, adding he’d like to pursue a future in politics.

Sweet success on court and in kitchen North York athlete Summyr Witter-Rhule tackles challenges with determination DAVID GROSSMAN active@insidetoronto.com It’s not burgers and fries that get the taste buds going for Summyr Witter-Rhule.

Growing up in North York, and often baking with her aunt, bit by bit the ingredients of a future career were being prepared for this young woman – and a profession that would take her from culinary cuisine to the baking and pastry arts.

Witter-Rhule has come a long way since her educational days at Cliffwood Public School, Don Valley Junior High and York Mills Collegiate – and she’s also determined, despite setbacks, to find a way to push forward.

“I don’t give up when people say I should,” said the bright 18 year old who is fluent in English and French. “I just push ahead with more determination.”

Now a student at George Brown College, focused on spending her next four years in the educational kitchens, labs and classrooms to earn her graduate diplomas, things haven’t gone easy for her.

In fact, Witter-Rhule has had her share of rough times.

But, it’s happened in the world of amateur sport.

At York Mills, where she was a multi-sport athlete, top goal scorer for her soccer team and nominated in Grade 10 for rookie Athlete of the Year, the sweet times turned

a bit sour when she got kicked in the knee.

It happened during a Toronto District School Board regularly scheduled league game.

Told by her doctor to take a week off, and wait for the results of an MRI, the urge to compete again had her back on the field. This time, it was for her club team in Unionville.

to a date in the hospital. During a game, her cleat got stuck in the ground. When Witter-Rhule heard a “pop” she knew there was a big problem.

“Looking back, I guess my desire to play got the best of me,” she said.

“If I had done the right thing, and waited, then maybe things would have turned out for the best.”

But it wasn’t to be.

Witter-Rhule underwent surgery at The Scarborough Hospital Birchmount site to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. She still gets some periodic pain and, for the past few years, has been wearing a knee brace to help when she plays. It’s also a reminder of the incident.

Now a college student, WitterRhule had the appetite for more than just cuisine.

Forget the soccer ball, this time it was volleyball. It was also a sport she had played at York Mills and people kept hinting that being 6-foot-1 was a bonus in that sport. So, she signed up for the George Brown squad.

Witter-Rhule elevated her game – and quickly. But fierce competition can often result in injury and that’s what happened.

In what was an innocent looking play, Witter-Rhule bumped her other knee with a player during the Durham Cup tournament in Oshawa. This time, rather than play, Witter-Rhule did the smart thing and put herself on the injured list.

“I’m out, not playing (with George Brown) for now – the knee hurts,” said Witter-Rhule. “This time I better wait for the results of more tests and hope that it’s not as serious.”

Four people arrested in North York break-ins Police have charged four people and are looking for a fifth in a series of break and enters in North York’s 32 Division.

Search warrants were executed in Toronto and York Region during Project Red Cross, which began Dec. 2 in response to a rash of break-ins in the police division.

During the search warrants, police allegedly seized two vehicles, jewelry, electronics and about $18,000 cash.

Giga Odosashvili, 26, of Vaughan, George Sidamonidze, 38, of Toronto, Lasha Chodzeli, 31, of Vaughan, and Alex Dolidze, 31, of Vaughan have been charged.

A warrant for the arrest of Sokrat Janelidze, 36, of Toronto, has been issued.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police are attempting to identify the rightful owners of property seized during the search warrants.

Photographs of some of the property have been released.

Man on bail in connection with shooting fails to appear in court Police looking for Stephen GayleHarrison, 27 ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Police are seeking the public’s help in finding a Scarborough man wanted for failing to comply with recognizance in connection

with a shooting in North York four years ago that seriously injured another man.

Police allege Stephen GayleHarrison, now 27, got into an argument with the victim at Parkwoods Village plaza on Parkwoods Village Drive on May 26, 2010.

The victim was shot once in the stomach and suffered serious injuries. He survived.

“He (Gayle-Harrison) was initially arrested for the shooting,”

Det. Chris Scherk said.

“He was released on bail conditions, and he’s failed to comply with those conditions as well as failing to appear for court as required.”

Gayle-Harrison’s last known address is on Birchmount Road in Scarborough.

“We’re seeking the public’s assistance in tracking him down, putting him back before the courts,” Scherk said.

“The public should probably

consider him armed and dangerous.”

f we were to wipe off almost four years of dust from our crystal ball, the smoke would reveal a possible provincial election this spring. With that, comes uncertainty and, potentially, the province’s (and with it Toronto’s) transit file getting derailed – again.

If we are to take Metrolinx at its word, the provincial transit agency has put everything on the table when it comes to transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). At its recent meeting, a long list of options was presented by staff, which will then get whittled down following consultations with the public and elected officials.

More consultations? More waiting. And what feels like more of the same, which our view amounts to very little. Cynicism aside, Torontonians should attend Project any and all meetings when it comes to transit solutions. We deadlines need voices at the table. As many have to be met voices as we can muster.

With some projects now underway – the Eglinton Crosstown LRT; the Scarborough subway was given the green light – and Metrolinx committed to a share of the subway relief line within 15 years, we have a shot at being part of the discussion.

And according to Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig, the plans are not limited to one major project, but likely a series of improvements in the short, mid- and longterm.

However, there needs to be a maximum time allotment for dealing with a project. No more open-ended deadlines. Projects take years – sometimes decades – to complete; so too much lag in decision-making is foolish.

Each day we consult, every week we wait for another meeting, the longer it will take to actually finalize a transit solution for the GTHA. If Metrolinx is to embark on another series of consultations – the first round kicking off in March – we should be there to voice our ideas. With an initial short list of recommendations to be presented to the Metrolinx board in June, and a final list by winter, things will hopefully become focused.

But when these projects will be completed is not so definite. A change in governments should not lead to changes to these approved projects. Deadlines have to be met. Decisions have to stick.

Will we see Canada in the men’s hockey final?

he Canadian men’s team has played a total of three, count ’em three, games in the Winter Olympic hockey tournament.

They’ve won all of them.

Ergo, they’ve lost none of them.

They’ve scored 10 goals and given up a whopping total of two, count ’em, two.

Yet every diehard Team Canada fan I know is fretting about the lads actually making it to the finals.

Take Benjamin. The poor guy has the heebiejeebies. They’re not the run-of-the-mill heebiejeebies either. I’m talking serious heebie-jeebies, folks.

Keeping pace in the department of anxiety is Victor who is a massive bundle of nerves.

And Jeff? The dude’s knickers are in a knot. It’s surprising enough he’s wearing knickers in the first place, but to have them in a knot, too? Over

Then there’s Danny. He’s worried stiff.

Jeremy is in a dither.

Carl is on tenterhooks.

And not to be outdone is Bart, who’s quaking in his boots. I mean it, too.

I saw a report on the Weather Network this morning and I expect Grapes to do a feature on it on Coach’s Corner tonight.

Now who am I leaving out here?

Oh, yeah, Mike. How could I forget him? Mike is as big a Team Canada fan as they come and he’s on pins and needles.

Meanwhile, David is worried stiff.

Sonny is in a tizzy.

Tommy is shaking like a leaf.

And Artie has butterflies in his stomach. Butterflies, it should be pointed out that were young caterpillars before the hockey started.

Then there’s Ken who is panic stricken.

reasons: 1. The game starts at 7 a.m. EST on Sunday morning. None of these yahoos have ever gotten up before 1 p.m. on a Sunday. Ever.

2. That means if Canada qualifies they’ll have to rely on somebody to phone them to wake them up or they won’t be able to see their beloved team live.

3. And this is the biggie.

I’m the only one any of them know who gets up that early. That means they all have to trust that I’ll actually call.

Interesting. I can’t wait to see what happens.

arts in brief Matsuri Festival at the JCCC wTheHaru Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre and Kobayashi Hall will be decorated to welcome spring’s arrival and mark the close of the winter season at the Haru Matsuri Festival March 1 and 2.

Haru Matsuri will feature Japanese arts and crafts demonstrations such as Ikebana (flower arranging), Bunka Shishu (embroidery), Sumi-e (brush painting) and Cha-no-yu (tea ceremony). The JCCC offers classes in all of these areas.

In addition, there will be vendor booths selling a wide variety of products.

The JCCC’s martial artists will demonstrate the techniques of “The Way of the Warrior” through aikido, judo, karate, iaido, naginata, kyudo, shorinji kempo and kendo.

ome now after seven months in Kenya installing filters to provide people with clean water, Ying Mao loved the sense of community among the villagers she stayed with.

“One thing about Kenya is people really reach out to others and the concept of time is very different,” said Mao, who lives in the area of Eglinton Avenue and Jane Street.

Unlike the hurriedness of Toronto, Kenyans visit each other daily and everything is more communal.

“People are still focused when they do their work but relationships are more important than getting things done,” said Mao, who was in Kenya from the end of last June until the end of January.

“I remember sharing that we don’t necessarily know our neighbours (in Toronto) and that was a huge shock.”

Mao was in Kenya as part of a development partnership between the federal government’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), formerly CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency), and Samaritan’s Purse.

Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization that provides humanitarian aid to people around the world

regardless of religion, race, gender or income level.

Government funding didn’t cover any of the faith-related aspects of the trip.

Mao, a 24-year-old graduate of York University’s international development program who also studied health and society, is eager to help people in developing countries.

“I always had a passion to know more about the world,” she said. “(Also), I studied international development. It made sense to get field experience and see what Canada is doing on the ground.”

Mao was one of 16 interns sent to work on different global projects.

Sh e a n d t h re e o t h e r women went to Kenya to install BioSand Water Filters, a Canadian invention that removes contaminants from drinking water.

This was not the first time Mao had been to Kenya.

She had been in the country in 2009 as a volunteer with Global Youth Volunteer Network, working with nongovernment organizations on different projects.

“I had some attachment to Kenya and was open to going back,” she said.

This time, Mao spent time in two villages.

The first, Siongiroi, is a semi-arid, more rural community.

Because access to water can be difficult, many people drink water directly from the river or consume rain water, both of which are not sanitary supplies, she said.

Some people boil their water but that uses a limited supply of available firewood, she said.

The second village, Kericho, where it rains almost daily, is at a higher elevation.

While there is piped water, the supply is not clean, Mao

said.

“Whatever comes out of the tap is brown,” she said.

Helping to provide people with clean water was fulfilling, she said.

Just as fulfilling were the relationships she forged with people in the communities, Mao said.

“Since I lived with locals, I got to see all of the challenges and successes in their community from their point of view,” she said.

“It opened my eyes to seeing the world, people’s hopes and dreams.”

Mao became interested in humanitarian work through her faith.

Describing her family as not religious, she became a Christian through a friend and is a member of Grace Chinese Gospel Church near Victoria Park and McNicoll Avenue.

Mao came to Canada at the age of four with her father and mother, Jiale Mao and Ping Dong, and her grandmother, Luping Yang.

An only child, Mao faced cultural pressure to pursue a high-paying professional career but said her outlook changed after she found her faith.

“I had a whole path for my life set out before I became a Christian,” she said.

“But at some point, I realized I was not living my life for my parents.”

While her parents were reluctant to let her go to Kenya the first time she went, this time they sent her “with open arms,” Mao said.

She envisions herself doing more humanitarian work in the future.

“I’m really open to that.

I’m trying to figure out where to go next,” she said.

“Through this experience, (I realize) I have a passion for working with women, either locally or globally.”

to release quarterly reports wTTC The TTC is promising to release a series of quarterly performance reports in 2014 to track how well it has lived up to past commitments to improve service.

The reports, the first of which will be available by mid-April, are intended to evaluate how well the TTC has fared when it comes to implementing service improvements as promised in this year’s customer

The Presto electronic transit fare card is attracting 50,000 new users per month, not including TTC use, according to Metrolinx.

The re-usable smart fare card is offered throughout the GTHA, including GO Transit, and allows users

to pre-purchase a select number of transit rides at a time, which can be spent by “tapping on” at designated portals inside transit stations and vehicles.

Presto has experienced technical growing pains in the past, but vicepresident Robert Hollis told Metrolinx’s board of directors last week only 0.1 per cent of customers have reported not being able to use the card for an extended amount of time due to service outages.

Suleman, who joined New Circles about a year ago, said he knew about three months into the job the current 6,500-square-foot space was inadequate, costly and didn’t allow for service expansion.

“Clothing is a basic necessity, but we wanted to do something more,” he said.

“This is an opportunity to take our clothing program to another level. The new

space will allow for a lot more things.”

New Circles opened in 2005 with the goal of assisting those living in poverty by providing much needed free clothing, servicing more than 13,000 children and adults annually, the majority of whom are Canadian newcomers.

New Circles has partnered with Skills for Change and Seneca College to offer a

business office administration pilot program in May at the new site, which will run for 12 weeks with 10 existing clients.

“One of the key issues newcomers face is employment,” Suleman said. “We are not an employment centre, but we are working with our clients to build skills. We are also going to run a youth retail training program in the summer for

six weeks.”

Currently, one-on-one peer mentoring for women to improve English skills is offered at Gateway Boulevard, along with a friendship circle for women, both of which run out of the kitchen due to lack of space, Suleman said.

The prom boutique program will still be up and running this year, he said, adding summer job placement, edu-

cation and training will also be added to help graduating students find jobs.

The move doesn’t come without costs, and New Circles is hoping to reduce the burden on its operating budget by appealing for $100,000 in donations for the one-time capital expenses, he said.

‘Some Enchanted Evening’ takes root in backup venue

A

broken water main tried to submerge The Civic Light Opera Company’s production of Some Enchanted Evening, but nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of the performers.

With less than one week’s notice they moved the entire production a few blocks north to the Zion Cultural Center.

This tour through more than 40 classic songs by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II was custom-built by Joe Cascone, who first staged it in 1991. Just like the songs it showcases, Some Enchanted Evening never wears out its welcome.

Audiences never tire of hearing “People Will Say we’re in Love” from Oklahoma! Yet few have hard the lovely song “Boys and Girls like You and Me,” which was dropped during that classic musical’s out-of-town tryout.

The cast bring an obvious love of the material to the stage, telling us the story of how Rodgers and Hammerstein joined forces to forever change the way musical plays are written and produced.

Hammerstein wanted every song to advance the story and enrich the characters.

He did his job so well that the famous “Soliloquy” from Carousel out of context is still a moving statement about impending fatherhood.

Cascone played Billy in The Civic Light Opera Company’s well-received production of Carousel in 2011, and it’s a thrill to hear him encore that famous aria. Likewise, Caroline MoroDalicandro appeared in the company’s production of the musical Allegro in 2004 and now has a chance to encore the song “So Far,” which she performed in that memorable production.

Peter Loucas and Elizabeth Rose Morriss blend their voices in the achingly beautiful love song “I Have Dreamed” from The King and I. Loucas also joins voices with Cascone for “All At One You Love Her” from the rarely seen 1955 musical Pipe Dream. Morriss also offers a deeply felt “If I Loved You” from Carousel.

There are a number of lighter moments to enjoy as well: Susan Sanders does a delicious send-up of Mary Martin singing “There is Music in You,” from the longforgotten film, Main Street to Broadway. After hearing Sanders scoop every other note, you will never be able to listen to Martin’s recordings with a straight face.

Keeping a straight face while watching David Haines cavort as one of the wicked step-sisters in a recreation of a scene from

Haines once again demonstrates why audiences enjoy his onstage

antics.

‘Rising stars’ in cancer research awarded Movember grants Three of four award recipients from Toronto Movember moustache fundraising has paid off this month with Prostate Cancer Canada dishing out nearly $1.8 million to fund innovative new research by “rising stars” in the field – three of them from Toronto.

Each Rising Star is awarded $150,000 a year toward salary support and research expenses for a three-year period.

The three Toronto researchers are: • Mathieu Lupien from Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and the University of Toronto. He’s developed a methodology to identify mutations that can change the function of “junk” DNA, and is now working to help design therapeutic strategies against those mutations; • Paul Boutros from the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR), which is based out of the MaRS Centre, West Tower, at 661 University Ave. His research involves picking out from the tens of thousands of mutations that naturally occur in the human body, the less than 100 that likely contribute to cancer formation.

• Stanley Liu from Sunnybrook Research Institute. He’s looking at how microRNA can make prostate cancer cells more aggressive and resistant to radiation treatment.

The fourth award went to Frédéric Pouliot from Université Laval. He’s developing a molecular imaging technology to predict which patients will respond to second-line hormonal treatments.

Lupien’s selection was fitting with university campuses from around the world raising $2.7 million – and with the U of T the top campus, raising just under $150,000.

That’s the lesson from a 911 call about a suspected drug lab in a North York apartment last Thursday.

Police and fire officials were called to 160 Chalkfarm Dr. near Jane Street and Wilson Avenue at about noon after building staff found some suspicious objects in a hallway: a bucket full of chemicals and lab apparatus.

A CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) team was also called to the scene.

But a brief investigation found no meth lab in the apartment in question.

“They were making homemade wine,” Const. Victor Kwong said. “You can’t blame the staff considering what they saw, but it’s also a good lesson not to jump to conclusions.”

The City of Toronto says an increase in coyote visibility this winter is normal due to mating season and weather conditions.

A common feature of Toronto’s natural landscape in recent years, coyotes are more comfortable leaving parks and ravines in search for food because of the lack of people outside in January and February.

While incidents of coyotes approaching pets and children are rare, the city recommends close supervision as well as the following tips to prevent the risk of a negative incident: • Avoid feeding any wild animals or feeding domestic pets outdoors.

• Ensure that house-

hold garbage is inaccessible to animals, and place garbage at the curb on the morning of the scheduled pickup (instead of nighttime).

• Consider using green bins rather than composters for food waste.

• Remove weeds or dense brush around property to minimize hiding spots.

If you do encounter a coyote, city staff advise people should scare it away by waving your arms, making loud noises and throwing objects in its direction. If this does not work, slowly back away from the coyote; do not turn your back and run away.

Del Grande exceeded our expectations

In my career as a journalist, I’ve only made two politicians angry enough to put me on their do-not-return-calls black list. The first was former mayor Mel Lastman.

The second was Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande.

In 2004, a year after he was first elected, he took me on a preChristmas tour of his ward and made some comments about the changing demographics there: specifically, that white people were moving out as Chinese people were moving in. I recorded them on an oldfashioned magnetic tape, and reported them, accurately.

They showed up in print over Christmas. By New Year’s Eve, commentators from outlets across the country were saying the worst things about Del Grande.

And that was it for us.

For the next 10 years, Del Grande would not return phone calls, speak with me or even acknowledge my presence – with rare exceptions, usually when I’d written something that made him angry enough to warrant a tongue-

Del Grande came to City Hall in 2003 with an accounting background, and he believed fervently that he was a person to sort out Toronto’s fiscal woes. But it wasn’t until Rob Ford was elected mayor in 2010 (Del Grande was among the first to support him), when Del Grande was rewarded with the job he first eyed in 2003: Toronto’s budget chief.

And no one can deny: he worked that job hard. Possibly a little too hard, given the toll it took on his health.

he took on the lion’s share of the work himself – trying to fit the camel-sized realities of the cost of government through Ford’s needle-sized expectations of the price.

Deputations might have been put off by Del Grande’s gruff manner of questioning.

But he did use the answers to put forward moderate compromises.

And it almost worked. But Del Grande quit the job in 2013, when council voted to add just a little more spending against his wishes. As far as he was concerned, he felt “vilified.”

At this year’s budget meeting he railed, quite accurately, against the lack of civility, and elsewhere has criticized, again quite accurately, the moral decline that Ford has brought to the office of mayor.

Now, I hope he doesn’t think too poorly of the place he feels used him so badly.

It may not have lived up to his expectations – but he has exceeded so many of ours.
