North York Harvest Food Bank hits its Winter Food Drive goal North York Harvest Food Bank (NYHFB) has hit its Winter Food Drive goal, raking in $270,000 and 250,000 pounds of food.

The drive, which ran Nov. 27 to Jan. 6, set a goal of $250,000 and 250,000 pounds of food, which

would provide 750,000 meals to children and families in northern Toronto.

NYHFB is the primary food bank for northern Toronto, distributing more than two million pounds of food every year

As is custom for the De Sario household this time of year, the family watched as countless passersby not only took in the vast Christmas light and decoration display at their North York home, but also opened their wallets to raise almost $16,000 for The Hospital for Sick Children.

The bright display at Pat and Amatore De Sario’s Benjamin Boake Trail home was turned on early December and shut off Jan. 6. The home near Keele Street and Sheppard Avenue was outfitted with 50,000 LED lights and countless inflatable decorations, and a donation box out front collected money to be given to the downtown hospital.

The De Sarios spent time at SickKids after their daughter, Angela, was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes years ago, and this is their way of giving back.

When the final tally came in, a whopping $15,975 was collected for SickKids, Pat said.

The highest amount collected over the 15 years the De Sario’s have held the fundraiser was just over $16,000 several years ago, Pat said, adding $12,000 was counted last year.

To date, the family has raised almost $140,000 for the downtown hospital.

“It was crazy this year,” Pat said of the line of people eager to take in the light display.

“There were a lot of people coming for the first time.

We even had someone from London, Ontario.”

Pat extended gratitude to neighbours on her street for their support of the family’s dazzling fundraiser, noting help came in the form of turning on the lights when the family wasn’t home, and helping Amatore take down the display.

Trillium Foundation invests $53 million in Ontario Dozens of not-for-profit organizations in Toronto benefit from funding JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com More than 300 not-for-profits across Ontario will share $53.5 million in funding thanks to a new round of investment by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).

The not-for-profits will be among the first to benefit from the OTF’s new Investment Strategy, which was launched last year. The strategy takes a multi-pronged approach to

investment, with funds seeding new initiatives, helping initiatives to grow, supporting capital improvements, and encouraging cross-sector collective impact to tackle complex community issues.

At a funding announcement at Rose Avenue Public School last Wednesday, OTF board chair Janet Yale spoke of the impact the donations will have on communities.

“This is the first time we’re doing our granting under our

new model of granting that was announced and launched last spring,” she said.

“We’re going to be investing in 326 initiatives that are going to benefit about a million people in Ontario, and that’s just our first round of granting.”

The announcement came with plenty of entertainment; Rose Avenue students played instruments and sang, their arts training having been supported by Inner City Angels

and Mariposa in the Schools.

As Toronto-based recipients of the OTF grants, Yale said those organizations and the work they do are “a great example of what we’re all about at the Trillium Foundation.”

Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Michael Coteau also spoke at the announcement, and said he was proud of the efforts of the OTF, which functions under the provincial government.

“We know that the partnerships that take place between our not-for-profit

community-based organizations, the private sector, our schools and government are keys to ensuring that we have ongoing achievement within the (not-for-profit) sector,” he said.

Inner City Angels executive director Jane Howard Baker noted that her organization would benefit greatly from its $150,000 share of the $53.5 million in funding, using it to help expand its arts-based programming and roll it out in other parts of the city.

Toronto’s OTF funding recipients cover more than just arts programming, with organizations including Covenant House Toronto, the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, the YMCA of Greater Toronto, Toronto Park People, Social Planning Toronto, the North York Seniors Centre, Food Forward, Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services.

ome mid-January, the post-holiday blues are in full effect as many have returned to their regular work schedule and the kids are back in school after time off.

The festivities enjoyed just a couple weeks prior are nothing but a distant memory with the focus solely on surviving the winter that is now fully upon us.

But what shouldn’t be so easily forgotten is all the goodwill Torontonians have shown throughout the Christmas season and the start of the new year.

Charitable organizations as well as individuals who have requested for donations to be given to numerous worthy causes found their pleas answered.

The numbers don’t lie.

The North York Harvest Food Bank recently announced that it has hit its Winter Food Drive goal having raised $270,000 and 250,000 pounds of food.

That’s enough to provide our view 750,000 meals to children and families in northern Toronto.

Across the city, residents and non-profit organizations also gave whatever the Syrian refugees who arrived in Canada this winter needed as they began to settle into their new adopted country.

Embrace the challenge

The easy thing to do now is to feel good about what’s been achieved collectively and not think about doing anything charitable until the next holiday season.

Instead, embrace the challenge to financially give if you’re able to do so. Or donate your time or any goods to groups that might need to help the disadvantaged in your community.

For example, Soles 4 Souls Canada, https://soles4souls.org/canada/, is hosting a shoe fundraiser, accepting unwanted pairs of gently used or new shoes to give to those in need.

Mayor John Tory can take a lesson from Rob Ford on avoiding City of Toronto strikes Rob Ford caused his supporters a lot of grief over his term in the mayor’s office, but no one who voted for him had cause to complain about his mayoralty’s handling of labour relations.

Unlike his two predecessors, Ford got through his tenure with just one strike: a short one, of library workers. Council under Ford’s leadership went so far as to end the possibility of work stoppage at the Toronto Transit Commission, convincing the province to turn the TTC into an essential service. And through it all: no garbage strike, no inside workers’ strike, nothing to trouble Torontonians’ summer holidays an iota.

All other things being equal, this alone might have guaranteed the Ford family a key to the mayor’s office as long as they wanted. It was, after all, the discontent with the 40-day garbage strike presided

david nickle the city over by former mayor David Miller in 2009, that helped buoy Ford from his council seat to the mayoralty in 2010. The lesson – that job security for mayors and job security for garbage collectors can’t really coexist – was well-learned.

It seems as though this too is the one positive lesson Mayor John Tory has taken from Ford. Because right before Christmas, just as Ford and his deputy mayor Doug Holyday did in their day, the new team asked for a labour conciliator just weeks after negotiations between the city and its outside workers began.

This was a very effective strategy the last time the city used it. The conciliation process accelerates the timeline toward a possible

strike or lockout situation, making it impossible for the negotiators at CUPE Local 416 to time their work stoppage for the warm, potentially stinky, days of summer. That happens, and the city negotiators are under pressure from an increasingly exasperated public to settle. And politicians need to look no further than 2009 to understand the political cost of holding ground, as Miller and company did.

Would matters be any easier watching garbage pile up in parks and parking lots in a mucky, rainy March? It’s likely we’ll never find out. With half the city’s garbage collection contracted out, there is a serious disincentive for outside workers to walk off the job when first, it’s damp, and second, nobody notices.

That is likely why the city’s other major union, CUPE Local 79, held its

strike vote over the weekend. Toronto negotiators have so far not requested conciliation with its inside workers. And while they may have yet done so, as matters stood it would be easy to see a circumstance where both unions are negotiating contracts months apart from one another – so any labour disruption would only come from one element of city services and not both.

But these are defensive maneuvers for unions that are in a losing battle with their employer. If Tory and council somehow find themselves facing a strike or ordering a lockout, Ford’s reliable if often off-base criticisms of his successor will finally have some real bite.

Lumacare receives funding to help seniors Lumacare, a North York-based agency that serves seniors in the home and community, can now serve an additional 130 at-risk seniors in its Assisted Living Services (ALS) program to help them remain independent in their homes, thanks to added funding from the Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).

As of Monday, Jan. 11, the ALS program will expand to serve 440 clients, up from 330.

ALS clients have complex needs and often face a number of challenges such as social isolation, decreased mobility and chronic diseases.

The program assists with personal support and homemaking services, grocery shopping, medication management, wellness classes, security checks, and 24/7 emergency response.

“Programs like ALS are much needed in order to help these vulnerable seniors thrive in their own home environment and minimize the need for institutional care,” said Danielle Dang, Lumacare’s director of programs and services.

Eligible ALS clients are identified and assessed by the Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) and referred to the program, which is funded by the Central LHIN.

Nguyen, a fourth-year chemistry student at York, is using gold nanoparticles to detect small pieces of genetic materials called microRNAs. MicroRNAs help regulate cellular

For her project, Nguyen developed and tested a low-cost sensing platform based on gold nanoparticles that stick together when a specific microRNA is present.

Her results indicate her platform is as sensitive as conventional methods in detecting low levels of microRNA. In a d d i t i o n t o d e t e c t i n g microRNA, this technology could be adapted to detect other cellular biomarkers, which might help improve diagnoses for a range of diseases.

“I’m pretty happy with how it went,” she said of her presentation. “All the (presentations) were stellar.”

Winner from Guelph U Robert Hunter, a fourth-year biomedical engineering student at the University of Guelph, was crowned competition winner.

Through his research, Hunter developed new electrochemical biosensors for metabolic disease biomarkers and influenza virus strains.

Dr. Michael Julius, vice-president of research at SRI, said the goal of the competition was to encourage early thinking of undergraduate students and to celebrate their accomplishments.

“What I heard was extraordinarily encouraging,” he said. “These are very smart individuals. The future, in my opinion, looks very bright.”

The national award was established by faculty in SRI’s physical sciences platform to acknowledge students for their hard work and contributions to research, with the aim of recognizing excellence in undergraduate research and promoting careers in biomedical research.

The competition is open to undergraduates in their third or fourth year of study at a Canadian university, and the award is funded by income generated by royalties from technology developed by SRI scientists.

Canadian Film Centre receives more than $4 million in funding The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) has received more than $4 million in federal funding to advance the development and commercialization of digital media products in southern Ontario, it was announced Tuesday, Jan. 12.

“The CFC works closely with the private sector to position our emerging and diverse media professionals and companies for success. In collaboration with various industry leaders, the new CFC Catalyze project will help create sustainable jobs, support new

digital media platforms, and commercialize these products, both at home and internationally.”

The investment will support CFC Catalyze, which is expected to create up to 216 jobs by the project’s completion and will support the development and commercialization of 46 digital media products.

Italian, Canadian soccer greats to go head to head with proceeds going to local youth sports group FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Former Italian and Canadian professional soccer greats are set to go head to head – or feet to feet – in what’s being billed as an Italian cultural event through song and sport.

The Italian Football Heroes (IFH) match will be held at Ricoh Coliseum at Exhibition Place Saturday, March 5 and will see Italy vs. Canada in a seven on seven, three-period match.

The Canadian All-Stars team will be led by Paul Stalteri, while organizers are aiming to secure Alessandro Del Piero as the big name draw.

Del Piero, who has represented the Italian national team at three FIFA World Cups, four UEFA European Football Championships and played 19 seasons for Juventus FC, was set to participate, but recent reports stating he’s up for the role of Real Mallorca sporting director might put the kibosh on his IFH appearance, organizers said Friday, Jan. 8 at Toronto Azzurri Youth Sports Village, which will receive a portion of proceeds from the soccer

event.

The Keele Street and Steeles Avenue Toronto Azzurri Youth Sports Village is a non-profit organization offering sports and character building programs to underprivileged and at-risk youth in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue corridor.

Along with the soccer match, the event will also feature entertainment

by Italian singer Pupo, audience games and a meet-and-greet with players.

The game will be played on artificial turf with three periods of 20 minutes each, with hockey-like substitutions.

Entertainment and games will be held in between periods.

Tony Cipriani, office manager of the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario and a founder of Toronto Azzurri Youth Sports Village, said the IFH game is strictly for entertainment.

“Hopefully there will be future happenings,” he said. “This is a brand new concept.”

OBITUARY: Longtime Canadian wheelchair basketball coach Jerry Tonello remembered NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Canada’s wheelchair basketball community is mourning the loss of longtime Paralympic coach Jerry Tonello of Toronto.

The head coach of Canada’s national men’s wheelchair team since 2009 culminated a decades long coaching career, guiding Canada to a gold medal at the 2012 London Paralympics with an undefeated record.

He had stepped down from his coaching role last spring, just prior to the Parapan Am Games in Toronto, after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

He died Wednesday, Jan. 6. He was 59.

Even while going through treatment, his thoughts never strayed far from the team, stated a press release from Wheelchair Basketball Canada.

Tonello continued to cheer on Canada from the sidelines, making an appearance at the

Ryerson Athletic Centre to show his support for his athletes and coaches while the Canadian men earned the gold medal at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto.

Upon winning the tournament, team co-captain David Eng made a special, heartfelt tribute to Tonello on behalf of the team following the gold medal game.

Stated Team Canada player and co-captain Bo Hedges, in the release: “We are all saddened by the news. Jerry was a great man and he did a lot for me in my development as an athlete. Where I am on the

national team and my success to date has a lot to do with the support Jerry has given me in my career. His passing is a big loss for the high performance program, for our team and for the greater wheelchair basketball community.”

The high performance program is based out of the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.

Prior to taking over the reigns of Team Canada in 2009, Tonello served as associate head coach at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, where the team won silver. He was also assistant coach for Canada at the three previous Paralympic Games, earning gold in both 2004 in Athens and 2000 in Sydney and sixth place in 1996 in Atlanta.

His coaching career began in 1982, joining the national team staff in 1991.

His Wheelchair Basketball Canada profile said he is “rec-

ognized in Canada as the first able-bodied player to compete at the national championship in 1992, although able-bodied players had been competing since 1989 at the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League (CWBL) Finals.”

In an interview with our North York Mirror newspaper more than a decade ago, Tonello explained he started playing wheelchair basketball in the 1970s when a couple of his disabled friends formed a sports club that allowed ablebodied athletes like him to play.

As a result, he said he just jumped into a wheelchair and started playing.

“Physically, it’s more challenging,” Tonello said in The Mirror story. “But the biggest benefit is that I get to play with my disabled friends. It’s a reality that I had disabled friends and I’ve wanted to participate with them, so I play their sport in a wheelchair.”

He ended up not just play-

ing the sport but also gravitating into coaching because he saw a need, eventually ending up as a NCCP Level 3 certified coach.

He graduated from the School of Kinesiology and He a t h S c i e n c e a t Yo rk University and earned a Bachelor of Education at the University of Toronto.

“I was coaching local teams and club teams and as my knowledge grew, I wanted to move up to the national level,” he explained.

In the interview which took place just after Canada’s gold medal at the 2004 Athens Paralympics, Tonello said that as a national squad coach it is very rewarding to see the improvement in the team’s play and the implementation of the coaches’ systems.

“They are very smart and able players,” he said.

“Watching them execute the plays the coaches want them to is very satisfying. Getting the best out of our players is the greatest satisfaction for a coach.”

Stop discrimination against female library workers, union head tells city committee DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The head of the union representing Toronto Public Library workers told a budget subcommittee that the city and the library board has been engaged in discriminatory practises against its largely female workforce and it should stop with this budget.

“We’re being discriminated against in the library – we’re 75 per cent female,” said library workers union president Maureen O’Reilly at the first day of public consultation in the 2016 budget debate.

“It’s 2016. It’s no longer acceptable to underpay the ladies of the library and to continually cut them.”

O’Reilly was referring to the Toronto Public Library Board’s recommendation to save $250,000 by cutting 6.7 full-time equivalent page positions – a move that would mean between 12 and 14 of the minimum-wage pages would lose their jobs.

The pages, said Reilly, are bearing much of the weight of a cut in library staffing that she said amounts to 25 per cent since 1992. The position of page was traditionally a part-time job for high school students, but currently, the average age of a page at Toronto Public Library is 43.

They do the work of reshelving materials and helping at checkouts.

She was joined by two part-time pages who told their own stories of being unable to afford a home or family and travelling from one end of the city to the other to pick up extra hours in various branches.

“I’m 31, tick-tock,” said Tori MacDonald, 31, who said she worries constantly about money, and does not see a circumstance in which she might have children.

O’Reilly reiterated the position of other deputants at the City Hall session, that Toronto must turn its poverty reduction strategy into “a living

document,” and help ensure good jobs are available to keep workers such as pages in a decent standard of living.

CUPE Local 79 President Tim Maguire noted Toronto is “the most unequal city in Canada with the highest concentration of working poor.”

Maguire called the poverty reduction strategy “a signal of hope” that needed to be matched in the budget. While budget chief Gary Crawford has indicated council will likely do so, at this point there is no explicit funding for the strategy in the budget as staff has proposed it.

It wasn’t all union leaders who spoke at the meeting. Grade six students from Mountview Alternative School took the city and Mayor John Tory to task for failing to adequately fund the many promises that have been made with higher tax rates. Mayor Tory has insisted property tax increases might be kept at the rate of inflation.

Uber Canada will resume its carpooling service in Toronto this week, the company has confirmed.

UberPool was launched on a trial basis during last year’s Pan Am Games. Over the two-week period in July, fares could be split between two riders headed in the same direction. And with costs to the user ending up 30 per cent cheaper than UberX – Uber’s controversial private taxi service – it was only a matter of time before the carpool option became permanent.

UberPool will be available in wide swathes of the city, although suburban areas are largely excluded. Only two riders per ride can take advantage of the fare-splitting option.

Waterfront Toronto will provide an update on plans to renovate the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal.

A new vision for the ferry terminal and surrounding Harbour Square Park was the focus of an international design competition held in 2015, won by a partnership made up of local architectural firms KPMB and Greenberg Consultants, and West 8 from the Netherlands.

The winning proposal

entails a terminal roof made of wood and topped by parkland – a far cry from the current concrete structure.

Waterfront Toronto will reveal an update of the winning design at a Jan. 26 meeting at the Brigantine Room in Harbourfront Centre starting at 6:30 p.m.

TO DISCUSS FUNDING at bathurst wTTCRIDERS

TTCriders will take their message of better transit funding directly to the transit commission’s customers during a public event this week.

On Friday, members of the transit advocacy group will take to Bathurst station between 1 and 3 p.m. to lobby riders about the TTC’s cash flow woes.

This month, the TTC increased cash and token fares, and the group said it is fed up with what it sees as a lack of government support.

Aviva Canada announces plan to sell insurance to UberX drivers MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com UberX drivers in Toronto, criticized for not having proper insurance coverage for passengers, may soon be able to get some.

Aviva Canada says it will be the first company in the country to sell supplementary insurance to its drivers who ride-share for the money.

“Ride-shar ing is not going away,” Glenn Cooper, a spokesperson for Aviva Canada, said. “Consumer demand drives this, just like anything else.”

UberX dr ivers aren’t licensed by the city, but use an app to turn their cars into a rolling business.

With an estimated 16,000 operating in Greater Toronto, Cooper said, “we knew there was a gap in coverage.”

Last fall, Aviva Canada cancelled some policies for UberX drivers in Ottawa after their commercial use was revealed because driving for Uber “is still considered commercial

use and is unacceptable for personal vehicles.”

Aviva’s position now is that most UberX drivers are ridesharing part time, and their add-on coverage, which the company said it hopes to offer starting next month, isn’t a commercial policy but covers driving done on a commercial basis.

Coverage is capped at 20 hours a week – drivers will be asked if they plan to drive zero to 10, or 11 to 20 hours with Uber – and could cost as little as $500 per year, Cooper said.

Licensed taxis in Toronto are required to have commercial insurance. The city, after trying unsuccessfully in court to shut down Uber within its jurisdiction, is working on new regulations to cover both taxicabs and ride-sharing drivers.

Cooper said Aviva is not taking sides, but hoping this will help municipalities make decisions on how to deal with ride-sharing services.

“If ride-sharing is out-

lawed, then we would adjust accordingly,” he said.

Uber has said its drivers are covered by a $5-million insurance policy, but members of the taxi industry and politicians have questioned whether this covers passengers or meets Ontario regulations.

Asked whether Uber Canada would recommend such supplementary insurance to its drivers, Susie Heath, a spokesperson, said Uber hasn’t seen details of the new Aviva policy.

“We remain committed to working with insurance companies and regulators across Canadian jurisdictions to quickly offer viable insurance products that embrace ride-sharing,” Health said.

Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Jim Karygiannis, a critic of Uber and vice-chair of Toronto council’s Licensing Committee, said such a policy still needs approval from Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa and Transport Minister Steven Del Duca.
