Mother Nature might have cast a shadow over donations for the De Sario family’s annual fundraiser, but they are keeping a sunny outlook. For the past 14 years, they have turned the exterior of their Benjamin Boake Trail home into a dazzling display of lights and inflatable decorations during Christmas to help raise funds for

The Hospital for Sick Children. The De Sarios spent time at the downtown hospital after their daughter was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes years ago, and this is their way of giving back. A collection box is situated out front, along with a book for visitors to sign. The lights were turned on Dec. 1 and shut off Jan. 6.

This year $8,287 was collected, sharply down from last year’s total of $14,500, said Pat De Sario. “The weather was really, really cold,” she said. “It was a really bad time of year, there was lots of snow, people weren’t getting out of their cars. We understand that. It’s our lowest total in a couple of years, but we are still happy with

what we raised. People had other things on their minds.” Like most residents, the De Sarios lost power after the Dec. 21 ice storm, resulting in their lights going dark for a day, she said. To date, the De Sarios have raised about $112,000 for the hospital. The family starts the painstak-

ing task of getting the spectacle ready at Thanksgiving, and puts in about 150 hours to make sure it’s just right. New additions this year included an eight-foot snowman, a tree with Santa, and Santa sitting in a chair with a book.

adim Halimov’s dream of becoming a police officer was shattered when medical specialists informed him his visual perception, particularly in the left eye, was not good. Four years of public safety and police studies at Seneca College were in limbo for the North York resident who decided a change was needed. He packed his bags, said farewell to Seneca and pursued business marketing at George Brown College. But the one thing that has stayed the same for the 25 year old, and in many cases keeps improving, is his passion for the sport of basketball. The irony is that Halimov, who claims soccer is his best sport and has won several medals in mixed martial arts, didn’t play the game of hoops until being coaxed by friends in his Grade 11 year at William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate. Now, the 6-foot-6 guard/ small forward is close to seeing his name added to the history books and is on the road to becoming the career all-time leading scorer in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). Halimov is having a banner year playing the best basketball of his life now, ranked the No. 1 college scorer in Canada and has piled up a phenomenal 30 or more points a game six times in 10 league games. The two-time OCAA all-star, 2014 candidate for league Player of the Year, as well as Athlete of the Year at George Brown, is getting coast-tocoast attention – and not because he wears pink shoes in his games. He is aware

there is a bit of distraction, but remains focused on helping his team win a league title. Right now, the Ontario all-time scoring title belongs to former Durham College player Anthony Batchelor. Halimov, having amassed 1,572 points, needs 238 more to be King of Ontario. Headin into last night’s game against Centennial, he has nine regular season games to go in 2014. You figure the math. “Sure (the record) is on my mind, but I would be a fool not to attribute where I am today to some great coaches and my teammates – you can’t do this alone,” said Halimov, who has the moniker “Vadim The Dream.”

A tough aggressive competitor on the hardwood, Halimov scored a seasonhigh 35 points in a November win over Fleming College of Peterborough. It was just a few points shy of his personal best of 38 points five years ago. As for more numbers, Halimov is also academically gifted pulling off straight As and a 3.96 grade average out of 4.0 in his recently completed first semester. In his fifth and final year of college sports eligibility, Halimov knows time is running out on getting the basketball record. “What will be will be,” said Halimov, who is tinker-

ing with the idea of playing in the National Basketball League of Canada or trying the European circuit. “Have to keep working hard, finding ways to improve. I want to get better and still think there is more playing days ahead before having to get serious about settling down one day. I know real life is ahead of me.” While not having to worry about being benched, Halimov did suffer a minor setback recently, injuring his ankle in a game against Durham College at the annual George Brown Winter Classic. It was bad enough he missed the championship game – one George Brown lost. “I went up for (the basketball) and landed on someone’s foot, twisting my ankle,” he recalled. “There was swelling, pain and for a quick minute there were flashes that my basketball days were over. I’ll be fine.” Halimov came to Canada with his parents and two older siblings 10 years ago from his native Uzbekistan. In that Central Asian country, located north of Afghanistan, basketball is far from the premier sport. His George Brown team, in the second half of the OCAA season, has an 8-3 record heading into last night’s game, third best in Ontario, while Halimov remains focused on learning and improving. “If one day people remember me, I hope it’s for knowing that I never quit, give it my best all the time and think highly of my teammates and coaches,” said Halimov.

Ice storm debate a pathetic display by Toronto council

he ice storm that hit Toronto at the end of last month imposed severe hardship, physically, emotionally and financially, upon hundreds of thousands of residents. Which makes the behaviour of councillors and the mayor at the special meeting held last Friday and this Monday to approve a call to seek financial help from the provincial and federal governments to help cover ice storm costs so disappointing. There are many issues surrounding the storm’s impact, costs associated with it and how the city’s leadership dealt with the crisis. The meeting was held to deal with those important items, yet it turned into a forum for petty politics and blatant electioneering. We deserve better from our our view elected officials. And they need to know most voters can see through what they were up to at the meetWarning: ing, and it will only reflect badly on themselves. After unanimously Voters are approving Monday morning what watching was a no-brainer of a decision to ask for federal and provincial disaster relief funding to cover two-thirds of the estimated of $171-million cost to the city for the ice storm and the flooding in July, the silliness started. Councillor Karen Stintz, who has said she intends to run for mayor in this year’s election, said Mayor Rob Ford should have handed over authority to Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly during the ice storm instead of taking the limelight for himself. Ford fired back at her and then went on to take shots at Kelly, accusing him of not being a leader during the crisis. Kelly accurately said the meeting was “degenerating into an embarrassing melee.” To wrap it up, Councillor Doug Ford, Mayor Ford’s brother, called Councillor John Parker “pathetic.” That came about after Parker made a remark about Mayor Ford thanking city staff for their work during the ice storm. Pathetic is what we would call the entire meeting. The request for funding could have been quickly dealt with Friday. Of course it was going to be a unanimous vote. The only reason the meeting continued was because too many councillors were using it for selfish motives. With this being a municipal election year, voters in this city need to take a hard look at our representatives. The behaviour of many of them Monday and Friday should not have improved their re-election chances.

Is it cold enough for ya this winter?

prefer summer weather forecasts over winter ones. In the summer they’re short and sweet. They tell us that the temperature is going to be such and such and that’s it. One number. Period. In the winter? No such luck. We get a long, confusing list with each temperature lower than the one before. What’s even more baffling is that the list always ends with the effect of wind chill on thermometer readings for some reason. Wind chill barely scratches the surface of what’s going on this time of year. If they’re going to lengthen the winter forecasts they should at least give us the complete picture. It should sound like this: The current temperature is -1. Downtown it’s -2. At the airport it’s -4.

If you don’t have your ears covered, it feels like it’s -16. If you don’t have thermal underwear on, it feels like it’s -20. If your significant other is complaining of a bad back and you’re the one stuck outside shoveling the snow before you both go to work, it feels like it’s -22. If you did the driveway but forgot to do the sidewalk and are ordered to get your butt back out there and finish the job, it feels like it’s -24. If you don’t have a garage and have to park your car on the street at

night and you’re having one heckuva time trying to get it started this morning, it feels like it’s -27. If you can’t get it to turn over and you have to sit in it until the motor league arrives to boost your battery, it feels like it’s -29. If you’re not lucky enough to own a car and you have to slog your way through the snow and ice for 10 minutes to the nearest bus stop, it feels like it’s -32. If you’re standing on a subway platform at an outdoor station, it feels like it’s -34. If after the next subway arrives and you hear the driver deliver the bad news that everybody on it has to get off and nobody can get on because the train is going to be turned back, it feels like it’s -36. If you’re outside waiting for a streetcar it feels like it’s -41. If the streetcar is running a little late, it feels

like it’s -43. If the streetcar is running a lot late, it feels like it’s -45. If you get a message that the streetcars on your route are all out of service and there will be shuttle buses instead, it feels like it’s -47. If there’s no room on the first two shuttle buses and you have to wait even longer for your ride, it feels like it’s -49. And if you haven’t got your morning double double with you while any and/or all of stuff is going on? Brrrrr. I don’t even want to think about it. No way you can put a number on that. We’re talking serious cold.

ust moments after the Fairview Public Library opened its doors after more than a year of renovations, three-year-old Naveed Soleimanzadeh was in the children’s section choosing books to take home. Naveed and his mom, Monireh Ataei, were among dozens of people who flocked to the Friday grand opening of the branch on Fairview Mall Drive northeast of Sheppard Avenue and Don Mills Road. “Before it closed (for renovations), we loved coming here. We came twice a week,” said Ataei, who said her family loves borrowing books and multi-language materials including DVDs and CDs. After 15 months of struggling to get to other branches during renovations, she is thrilled with the changes at Fairview. “It’s great. It’s bright and inside is really good. I love coming through the doors. It’s spacious,” she said.

Ron Geisler, a teacher at nearby private Royal Crown Academic School, which has a strong focus on English as a second language, said he routinely used the library before the renovations. “We try to get the kids to read a lot to improve their literacy. It’s an endless supply of books here,” said Geisler, who was in the teen section with some of his students last Friday. During renovations, he found some innovative but less-than-ideal ways to keep

The library is more spacious and offers more resources, Wood said. “I could not wait for them to re-open,” she said. Duncan agreed, saying he

likes the open spaces and is pleased with the materials available. “Everything is good, everything is better. It has everything you need – books, movies. The experience is better than before,” he said. Anne Bailey, Toronto Public Library’s director of branch libraries, said the renovated library offers an inviting and welcoming place with a wide variety of spaces for patrons’ different needs. “This is a very busy branch so having the branch closed for a little over a year was a hard thing for everybody to adjust to,” she said. “As you can see by the number of people here today, people are very glad...that we’re back.” It was gratifying, but not surprising, to see the library immediately fill up with residents eager to have their branch back, Bailey said. “We knew they would,” she said. “I think it captures great public space with views inside and out and a wonderful collection (of materials).”

Free weekly fitness classes aim to help girls grow ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Laura Sanhueza-Miller, who has competed internationally in both rowing and triathlon, is clearly a driven woman who has taken her personal failure and used it as motivation to help young women across Toronto through a not-forprofit called Shaping Her Esteem (SHE). Miller, 29, who is married and works in inside sales, grew up in Willowdale and now lives in Libery Village. At the age of 14 she started competing in triathlons. She continued to compete in these gruelling races, which combine biking, running and swimming long distances, until 2005 when at the age of 21, Miller went to the world championships for triathlon, but failed to finish the race. “That was very difficult for me because I had been training so hard just to get to that point,” Miller said. She explained it was her mental state, in part, that

prevented her from finishing the race. “I hadn’t done any mental

training at all,” Miller said. “I had just trained physically.”

Miller had also struggled with bulimia, which she said was triggered by criticism of her body by coaches and she said that impacted her overall health for competing. “It really woke me up after that race,” Miller said. “Having had that failure was an opportunity for me to grow and learn about my body and the importance of nutrition, the combination of mental training and physical training, putting all those pieces together.” That is when Miller started to think about helping young girls, but decided she personally needed to be in a good place before she could attempt to help others. Miller took six months off sports entirely before she took up rowing. In 2012, after six years in the sport, she made the national team and rowed in the 2012 world championships in the lightweight women’s quadruple sculls in Bulgaria. Now, using those lessons learned around food, fitness

Land transfer tax could become a Toronto staple Councillors refuse to quash the revenue-generating tool that will bring in $350 million this year MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com In the fourth year of Rob Ford’s mayoralty, Torontonians are still stuck with the municipal land transfer tax and so, it seems, is Mayor Ford. Ford entered office vowing to abolish the tax, a twin of the provincial land transfer levy introduced under his predecessor David Miller in 2008. But now that the year for his re-election has arrived, the municipal land transfer tax (MLTT) is still fully intact, and the embattled mayor will have his work cut out to convince Toronto City Council to trim it even by five per cent in 2014. He had more luck crushing Miller’s vehicle registration tax, seeing a number of councillors

who had supported it vote for its banishment early in his term. But the MLTT brings so much money to city coffers – a projected $350 million this year – that even Ford’s current budget chief admits it’s now a “lifeline” for the city, one too valuable to lose. “I don’t believe we can ever eliminate it,” Frank Di Giorgio said last Wednesday as his committee wrapped up work on the city’s operating and capital budgets. Committee members faced the wrath of Ford and his brother, Etobicoke North Councillor Doug

Ford, but did not cut the MLTT at all. The mayor told them the tax should be cut by 10 per cent or more. “It’s not a tough decision. You think about what your constituents want and you do it,” he said, adding other municipalities are doing fine without it. At one point, Ford – a councillor for 10 years before becoming mayor – rhetorically asked what the city had done before it had the “$330-million cushion” of the MLTT to fall back on. “We ran a good city,” he said. Some councillors said the tax is reasonable and hasn’t affected Toronto’s strong real estate market at all. North York Councillor Shelley Carroll suggested

it’s been good for seniors because it helps stabilize property tax rates. “Don’t mess with the formula now,” she said. Other councillors, including some who thought even a small cut might bring the city an economic stimulus, said cutting 10 per cent, or about $35 million in revenue, meant cuts to programs residents wanted. Ron Moeser from Scarborough said he would support a 10 per cent cut if the mayor’s office came forward with a corresponding list of programs to trim. Doug Ford argued the tax raised $15 million more than expected in 2013, just $2 million short of the amount needed for a five per cent cut. This, however, was rejected by most com-

mittee members, who opted to put the $15 million towards their goal of passing a budget later this month that hikes the city’s residential property tax rate by 2.25 per cent, including .5 per cent for a Scarborough subway extension. Bringing down the property tax hike from the 2.5 per cent proposed by staff is a chance to give taxpayers across the city a break, said Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford. As for the MLTT, which Crawford said he personally thinks is an unfair tax, “it’s here, it’s a reality.” Last July, the mayor – before he was replaced as the head of council’s executive committee – asked staff to research several options for cutting the MLTT.

Their advice for reducing the revenue it brings in by five per cent was to adjust MLTT rebates for first-time homebuyers so that many would actually pay up to $417 more, while other buyers could save $1,309. Doug Ford later criticized the “sense of entitlement” he said many his colleagues have for money the MLTT brings, but said he and the mayor will bring motions to a council meeting beginning Jan. 29 to cut the tax just before the budget passes. “We’re not going to look at 10 per cent. We’re going to look at five per cent. We all know interest rates are going to creep up,” he said.

Anybody still thinking Rob Ford won’t be a formidable force in the 2014 mayor’s race need look no farther than this week’s special ice storm council meeting to disabuse themselves of the idea. Ford showed the world this week what a political pit-fighter can do in a forum where all his opponents still feel they ought to constrain themselves by civility. Ford properly entered Monday’s forum, the second day of the two-day meeting, after council had dispensed with the crucial non-question of whether the city should ask for provincial and federal aid to deal with the cost of the December ice storm. After a speech in which he praised city and Hydro staff and chided his colleagues for not doing so themselves, the fight was on. The marquee match came when TTC chair and mayoral hopeful Karen Stintz rose to take on Ford. Through a series of carefully laid-out prosecutorial questions, she attempted to establish that Ford’s decision not to declare a state of emerconstruction on Eglinton avenue wMore Metrolinx is advising Eglinton Avenue residents to get ready for further construction related to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project. Work is set to begin below Eglinton on the eastern tunnel portion of the light rail line, with much of the work taking place between Brentcliffe Road and Yonge Street. Just as with the western section from Black Creek Drive to just past Eglinton West Station, the construction will include relocating utilities, building “headwall” supports and completing access and extraction points through which massive boring machines will eventually excavate tunnels east. By the time Stintz was able to counter that attack and push her core argument to the fore, she was reduced to trying to shout over the mayor, who wondered, “What are you so angry for?” If Stintz goes ahead and files her papers for the mayor’s race, that’s what she’ll be facing, debate after debate: a taunting, confident

Like other transit agencies, the TTC allows thirdparty developers to make use of its vehicle GPS data. But despite the popularity of Where Is My Streetcar, Rocket Man and others, the TTC doesn’t promote or recommend any specific transit app, leaving riders to determine on their own which works best. Now, the TTC is planning to hold an online voting contest to endorse and promote a single app, which it will feature and recommend to its customers. incumbent who in spite of any evidence you might care to throw at him won’t back down. Stintz wasn’t the only one to buckle. When Councillor Joe Mihevc went after Ford’s voting record, Ford turned it around and went after Mihevc’s travel record. When Kelly tried to correct Ford’s mischaracterization of his own work ethic, Ford went on the attack. Scarborough-Rouge River Councillor Raymond Cho’s almost plaintive questioning of the mayor’s aggressive tactics was met with more mockery, as the mayor bobbed and weaved and laughed off attacks from all corners. In the end, it wasn’t so much that Ford left the room looking particularly good, as that he’d left everyone around him looking foolish and flustered. As this election year progresses, any candidate hoping to deny Ford a second term is going to have to find a way to fortify their inner calm.
