Suicide is the ultimate form of despair and

hopelessness,” said Peter Youngren, the executive director the 4Life Foundation. “That is a brutal fact.” The 4Life Foundation is a Canadian charity that provides opportunities for at-risk youths to have a better life through sport, education, music and dance. heartbreaking.” There have been at least five highprofile suicide cases in the past year linked to bullying, the most talked about being 15-year-old Vancouver teen Amanda Todd, who made a YouTube video of her turmoil on cue cards before taking her life last October. Residents came armed with an array of questions and concerns, some local, some city wide, at a Ward 10 town hall meeting last Thursday. The packed meeting inside the newly opened Bathurst-Finch Community Hub, at the southwest corner of Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue, touched on the possibility of a casino and entertainment complex built downtown, community safety, park upgrades and a new Centennial Library and Herbert. H. Carnegie Centennial Centre. Paul Godfrey, chair of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, told those at the meeting he wants to build an iconic structure in the city that would create 6,000 construction jobs and 12,000 permanent jobs once built. “The gambling portion would be 10 per cent of the space,” he said, adding the entertainment complex would help boost conventions in the city. “City politicians have to decide if they want this, then we will pick a site. We’ve been talking to the city since mid-June and by the end of March or early April we expect a decision. We will build one, whether it’s in Toronto, Markham, Vaughan or Mississauga.” Noting cost increases such as policing to patrol such a large complex, ward councillor James Pasternak said he would not be supporting the project in the city, which was met with applause. On the local side, traffic congestion along Dufferin Street, between Steeles and Finch avenues, was a concern, with residents wondering >>>park, page 5

A loaded pistol was allegedly uncovered in the Ranee Avenue and Varna Drive area following a robbery investigation last Saturday. Officers from the Toronto AntiViolence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) team were patrolling the area around 7:30 p.m. following reports of an earlier robbery near Dufferin Street and Hwy. 401. After investigating three men, police allegedly seized a loaded .380 semi-automatic pistol. Samatar Jinje, 20, of Toronto, has been charged with four gun-related offences.

Mom has ‘high hopes’ for son’s complex medical care NYGH opens pediatric clinic LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Baby Ryan has had one health complication after another since being born extremely prematurely last April. Born at 24 weeks, just over half the normal gestation period of about 40 weeks, he came into the world after his mother’s placenta separated from her uterus. Although a little fighter, Ryan has lived with serious health concerns since his birth, including problems with his breathing, heart, immune system, his ability to eat and possibly his hearing. “It’s been challenging from the beginning,” said his mother, Kerri, who did not want her or Ryan’s surnames published. “The last eight months have been very difficult. There are a lot of unknowns.” Ryan’s life so far has been a whirlwind of appointments and treatments, with different medical

professionals in different locations sometimes providing confusing or conflicting information. Even when a treatment plan is worked out, it can become outdated as new challenges arise, Kerri said. But hopefully, that’s all about to change. Ryan was the first patient treated at North York General Hospital’s pediatric complex care clinic immediately following the unit’s grand opening last Friday. The clinic acts as a one-stop centre providing care and co-ordinating treatment for children with complex medical conditions such as extremely premature birth, cerebral palsy, genetic disorders, congenital heart disease as well as for youngsters who do not yet have a clear diagnosis. Young patients are seen by a pediatrician, pediatric nurse practitioner, occupational therapist, dietician, social worker, geneticist and a coordinator from the Community Care Access Centre. The team partners with the child’s own pediatrician or family doctor, specialist and other health care providers. The clinic also works in partnership with the complex care program at the

Hospital for Sick Children. It was at Sick Kids that Kerri found out about North York General’s new clinic. She’s looking forward to having a place closer to home where Ryan can be treated and have his care coordinated. “I have high hopes for the clinic. I hope it can take some of the guesswork out (about his care),” she said. “I think there are a lot of parents with kids like him who don’t know how to

find resources.” The clinic, which has 10 patients lined up, will care for young patients with complex needs that had been falling through the cracks, said Cathie Badeau, program director of the hospital’s child and teen program, and pediatrician Dr. Ronik Kanani, who also works at Sick Kids. While the patients were receiving medical care, their parents were often forced to shuffle from pillar to post across the Greater Toronto Area seek-

ing treatment for their children and trying to understand complicated and sometimes contradictory information, they said. “For the family, it is very concerning. They are seeing many physicians telling them slightly different things,” said Kanani, adding community doctors often don’t have the time needed during routine visits to devote to patients with extremely complex illnesses. “I think they get care. But it’s often fishing (for different resources and families face long) wait times. It is frustrating.” While the patients will continue to see other caregivers, the clinic will provide treatment, co-ordinate care with other medical professionals and work with families to develop shortand long-term health goals. The patient’s complex care plan, developed with input from families and medical staff, will be updated after each visit to address the patient’s ongoing challenges and developments, Badeau said. The clinic will also help reduce duplication of services because some patients now see more than one occupational therapist or dietician, for example, she said.

A transit system that works for all

T

oronto residents need to continue to make their voices heard when it comes to the transit issues facing not only our city, but the entire Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance released an update of its Your 32 campaign this week, and it shows a growing support our view among GTHA residents to not only improve transit, but to also accept some of the responsibil- Opportunities ity for paying for it. for citizens John Tory, co-chair of CivicAction, said transportation to participate challenges have become the top issue for GTHA residents who deal with one of the longest commute times in North America. He called it “seven-day-a-week paralysis” that deeply affects families and business in the area. The Your 32 campaign asked residents what they would do if they had 32 minutes they otherwise wouldn’t have had to spend on transit. Spending more time with family was one of the main responses. What really stood out, though, was what Tory called the human cost of our inadequate transportation system. The campaign was done to show support for the regional transit system improvements being proposed by Metrolinx. The Big Move aims to infuse some $50 billion worth of transit improvements in the GTHA over the next 25 years. The campaign helped residents realize the real costs of transit congestion and what it would be worth to them to make things better. We have said before in this space that we in Toronto, and the surrounding regions, will get the transit we are willing to pay for. Yes, provincial and federal governments must shoulder their share of the cost, but residents are also going to have to be willing to accept funding tools such as tax increases dedicated specifically for transit. To that end, the City of Toronto’s planning department is beginning its own set of public consultations on transit. Chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat said the meetings are being driven by the need to provide information to Metrolinx on what Toronto’s transit priorities are. We urge Toronto residents to participate in these meetings, and play a role in creating a regional transit system that works for all of us. Exact dates have not been finalized, but once that information is available we will let our readers know when and where these meetings will be. newsroom

To the editor: The political picture over the past 30 to 40 years has brought the same old names and faces. Why? Because where else do you get paid mega-bucks and really do not have to have any experience or qualifications and answer to no one? These people are professionals at living off the poor dumb taxpayers. Come on fellow voters, it is time we smartened up. Remember there is no rule that says you need a law degree to be a politician. And of course it is high time we put into law the maximum time for all politicians be set at two terms of office. W.D. Adamson

It’s official: Saturday night fever returns “So? Are you going to be watching on Saturday night?” I asked Anthony the other day. “What do you think?” he replied. “I figured as much,” I said. “I knew you’d cave in when all was said and done.” “And you,” he returned. “What do you think?” I responded. “I figured as much,” I said. “I knew you’d cave in, too.” I had the same exchange with Jason this week. And Frank. And Mario. And Mike. And a whole bunch of others. I canvassed many of the most avid fans I know to see if they would be tuning in to Hockey Night in Canada to catch the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the Montreal

Canadiens on opening night of the abbreviated National Hockey League season. But I didn’t have to ask them. I already knew the answer. And they didn’t have to ask me either. They knew what I was going to say, too. Though we all did more than our fair share of grumbling during the recent lockout about the audacity of the owners and players shutting down their game while they argued about how to divvy up money fans haven’t given them yet, none of us will be abstaining from tuning in to the first telecast, even for a few minutes. There will no boycotting.

Or mancotting. No protests, silent or noisy. The same goes for the majority of hockey fans coast to coast. We’ll be doing what we always do when the NHL season starts: parking our tushies on the sofa in front of the tube. Going back to hockey is a slam dunk, if you’ll pardon the mixed metaphor. The speed, the skill, the moves, the passes, the hits, the shots, the saves, Grapes on Saturday nights. We can’t live without it. NHL hockey is in our DNA. We couldn’t not tune in if we tried, if you’ll pardon the double negative. But another thing we all agreed upon is that we hope and pray we’re not going to be inundated with a chorus of apologies from the owners and the players before the first face-off.

We don’t need a fancy JumboTron mea culpa. We don’t need any endless on-ice repentance. We don’t need any scripted statements of remorse written by public relations firms. It’s tough enough on us that the season isn’t starting until mid-January. We don’t want the return delayed for even one more second by any more rhetoric. We had enough of it during the stoppage. So, enough of the silly games once and for all, gentleman. Just give us the real games finally, OK? We beg you. Please. Just drop the puck. n Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico. ca

>>>from page 1 why the roadway couldn’t be widened. The new subway extension set to open in 2016 will theoretically take dozens of buses and hundreds of cars off that corridor, Pasternak said, so motorists will have to tough it out until then.

panhandlers Concern was also raised about panhandlers in the Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue area, with several residents reporting beggars walk between traffic lanes, asking for change. A 32 Division officer who attended the meeting said asking for change isn’t against the law but all calls will be processed. Community activist Maureen Simpson said a place for youths to go after school is imperative. “Don’t cut anything for the youths,” she said. “It’s also crucial to have free programs for adults in priority centres.” Pasternak said he’s hoping his motion to waive adult fees at priority centres, such as at Antibes Community Centre, will be debated

at council this week. Circle of Care’s Lisa Levin encouraged the councillor to bring back the free Wheel-Trans bus for the many seniors who call Ward 10 home. Pasternak said a motion was brought forward in 2011 and deferred by the Toronto Transit Commission to 2013, so he expects the issue to be up for debate this year. Pasternak also touched on $220,000 in improvements scheduled for Hidden Trail Park next year, which will see a “pretty ordinary” park spruced up with benches, a playground, new trees, swings, seesaws and a climbing net. Wilson Heights Park, situated near Allen Road, will transform from empty green space to a park that has a reading nook and little library, he said, adding improvement plans are set for this year. A preliminary design of a new Centennial Library and Herbert H. Carnegie Centennial Centre was also unveiled. Plans for the library include expanding the space from 6,900 square feet to about 10,000 square feet, with all programs and staff on one floor. The basement can be used for programing opportunities. Nia Centre for the Arts would

occupy space on a second level, complete with multi-purpose space, media studios, visual arts workspace, exhibition and gallery and performance space. arts and rec hub Herbert H. Carnegie Centennial Centre would see improved accessibility to the arena and existing meeting facilities; potential to integrate facilities, such as through a link, to create an arts and recreation hub; opportunity to improve the concession area and washrooms; and opportunity to improve public outdoor space including integration with adjacent parkland. “I think it’s a great opportunity to get those synergies of partners in the same place,” said Linda Karlinsky, area manager of Toronto Public Library. Opened in October, the BathurstFinch Community Hub offers community and medical services, such as counselling, employment services, seniors’ activities and youth groups, along with 7,000 square feet of community space. The hub’s official opening is scheduled for April.

>>>from page 1 well as CFL players. “We always work with someone with authority,” said Youngren. “I think it’s better to see someone with authority or who has instant respect be vulnerable.” That’s where Allison comes in. Presented as a “tough guy” on the ice after going mano-a-mano with the likes of Tie Domi, Allison, who is now retired from the game, admitted to the crowd that he’s never gotten into a fight off the ice: “It’s not worth it.” He also shared a few bullying stories of his own. He recalls having to wear his older brother’s hand-medowns when he was a child because his parents, although they worked hard and did what they could, couldn’t afford new clothes for him. So he was teased – relentlessly. “But I didn’t let that define me,” said Allison. “Or who I was going to be.” Allison went on to say by the time he got to high school in Windsor he was drafted to play for the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL and admitted to hanging out with the “cool kids” in school who would tease one boy, Robbie, who ate lunch alone every day. “I’ve always hated bullies and I’d always stand up for the underdog,”

said Allison. So he made the bold decision to tell his friends he didn’t like what they were doing and went to sit with Robbie that day and every day after that. “By the end of the school year Robbie had more friends than I did,” said Allison. “It was a poignant moment in my life that really stuck with me.” The older the students in the audience, the more intense the subject matter: from the basics of telling kindergarteners that making fun of someone because they are from another country or have a difficult name to pronounce is not OK, to getting to the nitty-gritty of sexting and relationship bullying with Grade 12 students. One of the main messages Youngren said he wanted to get across to students is to get them to open up about being bullied. “Most of these kids don’t talk,” said Youngren “They suffer in silence.” According to Youngren, speaking up is just one of “a thousand little things” that can help reduce bullying in schools. “I don’t think there’s any one thing that can be pinpointed as a fix,” said Youngren. “If there was I would do it.”

FIRST LOOK: 2013 TOYOTA COROLLA CE

The Corolla has seating for five and is spacious for a compact vehicle. Rear seat legroom is limited when the two front seats are in their rearmost positions.

One of the best-selling cars in Canada year after year, the Canadian-built Corolla is now in its 11th generation and still going strong after 40 years on the market.

The cargo area for the 2013 Corolla is 348 litres (12.3 cu ft) and the 60/40 split rear seats fold to create even more area.

The interior of the 2013 Toyota Corolla has an attractive two-tone colour scheme. All controls are easy to use and the cabin is quiet and comfortable.

A new front grille design is one of the few changes on the Canadian-built 2013 Toyota Corolla

The Corolla has never been a flashy looking car, but thousands of Canadians are loyal to the model, and continue to buy them in big numbers. More than 40,000 Corollas were sold in Canada in 2013.

Cadillac ATS is a

serious contender The 2013 Cadillac ATS represents a wonderful insight into how GM corporate thinking and reaction to consumer interests have changed. In a bold move, a completely new chassis – the Alpha – was created for a new generation of

small, nimble cars of which the ATS would be first. We will be hearing a lot more about the Alpha in coming years and I suspect the new generation Camaro among them. The Alpha was designed for rear or all-wheel-drive and 50:50

The 2013 Cadillac ATS is a very serious attempt to produce a worldclass sports sedan with a competent engine/suspension system and a choice of rear- or all-wheel-drive.

weight distribution. Like the Europeans, the ATS offers a choice of gasoline engines. The first is a 202 hp (190 lb/ft) 2.5-litre inline fourcylinder. Available on the bottom two of the four trim levels, it also is only offered in rear-wheel-drive (RWD). The other two engines are a 2.0-litre, direct injection turbo with 272 hp (260 lb/ft) and a 3.6litre direct injection V6 with 321 hp (274 lb/ft) both available in RWD and AWD. All versions of the ATS use GM’s standard six-speed automatic except for a six-speed manual available on the turbo only. While the 2.5-litre gets fourwheel disc brakes, the 2.0-litre and 3.6-litre enhance stopping power with upgraded four-piston Brembo calipers. All versions have what Cadillac calls its Auto-Dry Brakes system which applies the brakes very lightly in wet conditions to take excess water off the discs. Lastly, the ATS features the third generation GM Magnetic Ride

Control suspension that uses sensors to “read the road up to 1,000 times per second and change the damping settings to match thus improving control. The styling is very aerodynamic with an integrated rear spoiler, outside mirrors optimized for wind flow and active shutters behind the grille that close at speed to cut drag. Equipped with the 3.6-litre and AWD, my tester was fitted out in ruby red metallic paint, machined 18-inch alloy wheels and wonderful biscuit-coloured leather.

There are several interior trim materials such as carbon fibre, aluminum and “sustainably sourced exotic woods. The leathers are offered in a variety of tones and all, like the panels, are sewn with French stitching. Front suspension is MacPherson struts, but on the ATS it is a double pivot setup with the rear suspension being a five-link system which works really well with AWD and RWD because of the compliance built into the geometry to take advantage of the Magnetic Ride Control.

With the 3.6-litre, the ATS is deceptively fast. Here, the optional heads-up display was a plus not a hindrance, as a majority of twisty roads I used snake through cottage country where the locals are not that vigilant but the police are. As tested, my fully optioned 3.6litre AWD was priced at $56,870. This is a remarkably different kind of Cadillac and one that should help return the brand to the time when it billed itself as “the Standard of the World.

W

hen Jennifer Keesmaat turned up as the City of Toronto’s new chief planner last summer, it raised a few eyebrows. It’s not to say the former planning consultant wasn’t a good fit. Keesmaat cut her teeth on city politics, working as an executive assistant for councillors Joe Mihevc and Jane Pitfield in the early days of amalgamated Toronto. In the private sector, she’s worked on land use planning issues – what she’d term “city building” – in communities across the country. But she seemed like an odd choice for the Ford administration. Keesmaat also came as an advocate for lowerorder transit and cycling and pedestrian accommodation. On the last point, she went so far as to deliver a TED talk, extolling the virtues of walking to school. She’s a planner that would have been a perfect fit in the David Miller administration. Not so much for the procar, anti-streetcar Ford era. On Monday, Keesmaat stood up in front of a packed house at the Toronto Board of Trade, pressing a similarly neighbourhood-based agenda. Transportation, she said, remains the singular challenge for growing a city surrounded by sprawling suburbs, both within – and far beyond – city limits. Too many of us are spending too long getting to and from work, and it’s affecting the city’s ability to attract more jobs and remain livable. Next month, she and the city will be launching a public consultation plan to see just what level of transit improvement Toronto residents are willing to pay for. But in the speech, she made it clear that the biggest transportation improvement the city can make involves developing midrise housing and commercial

space along some of the city’s avenues. As she pointed out: “Where we choose to live is our most important transportation planning problem. If you live in Hamilton and commute to Toronto, even with state-ofthe-art transportation infrastructure, you’re commuting for two hours a day.” This is a view entirely consistent with the City of Toronto’s progressivist planning legacy, so not entirely new. But so long as Toronto continues along the route that Mayor Rob Ford began in 2010, it’s clear that Keesmaat is fighting against the grain. In a moment of candor that seemed almost unbelievably politically naïve for a civil servant, she admitted as much. “We, of course, have a political culture that’s very challenging. I’m not getting into that in any detail, but the reality is we’re in a highly politicized environment. I was warned about the fishbowl before coming here. You can know about it intellectually, but you have no idea what it’s like having so many eyes looking at everything you say or tweet.” The fact that Keesmaat was first hired, and second remains in her position, suggests that those eyes are more diverse in opinion than the message from the mayor’s office might suggest.

The Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) has a busy weekend in Toronto with three tournaments, including two in Etobicoke and one in North York, along with a triple-A midget hockey all-star game in Etobicoke. Here’s a rundown:

Blvd. in Etobicoke. The furthest flung team comes from Sudbury while a team from Cheektowaga, near Buffalo, New York, provides international flavour. More info and schedule at www.torontopenguinhockey. com/Tournament.php

■ The 2013 Midget AAA all-star game will take place at the MasterCard Centre in Etobicoke Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Full rosters available at www. gthlcanada.com/uploads/ MASF_Rosters_2012-13.pdf The 13th annual Toronto Penguins International Winter Classic runs Jan. 18 to 20 with more than 70 teams ranging from minor atom to senior midget levels at the A and AA levels. All games are at Westwood Arenas, 90 Woodbine Downs

■ The Humber Valley Hockey Association will hold its 30th annual select hockey tournament Jan. 18 to 20. As the name suggests, it’s at the select (house league allstar) level. The tournament has 15 teams – seven at the minor atom level and eight at the atom level. All games are being played at Central Arena, 50 Montgomery Rd. in Etobicoke. Complete schedule at www. hvha.org/select_tournament. html
