Actor Jessica Rose takes on directorial role at Fringe DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com
North York-raised actor Jessica Rose is returning to her first love of acting, the theatre, following a few years of appearing on screen.
However, she will not be appearing on stage; instead, she will direct other actors in the production of One Good Marriage that’s running July 2 to 12 as part of the 2015 Toronto Fringe Festival. It’s also her first time directing in some years.
“It’s neat to go back to it now because I think I’ve grown and changed so much as an artist, and especially as an actor it gives me a new way in to the work that I’m finding really fun,” the 30-year-old Earl Haig Secondary School graduate
said. With credits in such productions as The Cousins of Corsica, The Girlfriend Experience, Saving Hope, God and Country and more, Rose has spent much of the past few years on camera. Trained in theatre since age
nine and with a bachelor of fine arts in acting degree from the University of Windsor, Rose was glad to be given the opportunity to return to the stage. The play, written by Sean Re y c ra f t , w o n t h e N OW >>>ONE, page 6

Volunteers help load bottles on to a truck during the 16th annual Project Water at The Bargains Group last week. Hundreds of participants were on hand to move water and survival kits onto vehicles to be distributed to the homeless and people in need.
Project Water up and running for the summer Initiative delivers water to homeless FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com With the sun blazing down and music pumping, dozens of volunteers loaded hundreds of thousands of water bottles into trucks last Wednesday to be delivered to those who call the streets home. Now in its 16th year, Project Water will provide more than 170 social service agencies, outreach providers and homeless shelters with some 300,000 bottles of water and 3,000 summer survival kits in an effort to keep those living on the streets hydrated and safe during summer heat. An Engage and Change initiative, Project Water was founded by Jody Steinhauer, president of The Bargains Group on Caledonia Road,
south of Lawrence Avenue. Donated by Nestle Waters Canada, the water was put into trucks situated in The Bargains Group parking lot to be distributed to the homeless in the city and Greater Toronto Area later that day and throughout summer. Summer survival kits, which include bottled water, a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, hat, toiletries, first aid items, sunglasses and a poncho, will be handed out during the summer. Project Water usually launches in July, but was moved up to avoid potential conflicts relating to t h e To r o n t o 2 0 1 5 Pa n Am/Parapan Am Games, Steinhauer said. “The need is greater,” she said of Project Water resources. “Every year there is a slight increase.” John Challinor, director of corporate affairs for Nestle Waters Canada, a corporate sponsor for the initiative over the past nine years, said it’s critically important to be able
to access water, something the homeless might not be able to do. “Project Water is vitally important,” he said. “Jody proactively understands the issue. We can see the impact.” Without initiatives like Project Water, agencies like The Salvation Army wouldn’t be able to function, said Dan Millar, area director of public relations and development for the charity. “They help give us water to supply the streets,” he said, adding 1,200 bottles are handed out within a fourhour stretch. “People cannot survive without water. Our tag line is ‘giving hope today’, and that’s what we’re doing at today’s event.” Steinhauer also heads Project Winter Survival, which distributes winter survival kits to the homeless, including sleeping bags.

The Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University will be receiving at least a $5 million upgrade to allow Canadian track and field athletes to train year-long in a world-class facility. Minister of State (Sport) Bal Gosal announced the federal funding on Saturday alongside Toronto Mayor John Tory and representatives of Athletics Canada. “ The Government of Canada’s investment in upgrading the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University is an important component of the legacy of the Toronto 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games,” Gosal said. “During this Year of Sport in Canada, we are doing

The veteran North York councillor will be Toronto’s first Arts Advocate, Tory said at a Monday news conference at St. James Park in downtown Toronto – helping to promote public art, performances and build the city’s arts-based economy. “Councillor Filion is no stranger to this area,” said Tory, noting that Filion sits on the board of the Toronto Arts Council and the Music Industry Advisory Council. “I have seen first-hand what he has created with the help of others…. the Toronto Track and Field Centre hosting more than 80 special events and attracting 200,000 people annually. Tory also thanked the federal government for investing in sport and recreation within the city. “World-class cities have world-class sport infrastructure, and the upgrades to the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University will positively benefit a generation of Canadian athletes,” he said. “This is a further example of the legacy the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games will have for Toronto.” The funding is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment of up to $500 million to the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games legacy.

“I’m a great believer in the arts as a way to bring people together and to be able to do that in public space – with lots of free concerts that are accessible to the community, that give you a sense of belonging to something larger.” Filion said the arts was a great unifying force on Toronto Council too – in ways that might be surprising. “Some people you wouldn’t think they were supporters, listening to the speak at council, but when you talk to them and ask them what the first record was they ever bought, you’ll find out that the passion for the arts keeps on coming out.” Filion’s first job will be to work with the Toronto Arts Foundation to get the new Arts in the Park program going – that will see artists at work in a minimum of 22 wards this year.

ith Canada Day celebrations wrapped up lastnight with fireworks at numerous locations, it’s now time for residents to get geared up for Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay events starting this Saturday in our city and continuing until the official opening of the Games on Friday, July 10. The torch relay started back on May 30 with the flame’s arrival at Harbourfront. From there, the torch has been on a 41-day trek across Canada. Along the way, it’s made stops in Vancouver, Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary and numerous cities and towns across Ontario. By the time the torch relay wraps up next Friday, it will have been carried by some 3,000 torchbearers and visited more than 130 communities. For Torontonians, the torch relay excitement starts Saturday evening and there will be numerous opportunities for residents to get up close and personal with the torch as it makes its way our view through many of our city’s neighbourhoods through to July 10. The torch relay starts its day at Get up close Canadian Forces Base Trenton and personal on Saturday, and will arrive in Toronto late afternoon for a huge in your city community celebration on the Prince Edward Viaduct (also known as the Bloor viaduct) beginning at 5 p.m. Metroland Media Toronto will be at Saturday evening’s event, along with many other community groups and organizations. The celebration will culminate with the lighting of the Luminous Viel on the viaduct. The next day, the torch relay travels mostly through Scarborough with stops at Variety Village, the Toronto Zoo and a big celebration at 2 p.m. across from the Pan Am aquatic centre at Morningside Avenue and Military Trail. Sunday evening will also see the torch relay visit the Afrofest celebrations in the Beach at 7 p.m., and the Aga Khan Museum in North York starting at 8:15 p.m. The rest of the week, torch relay events in Toronto are planned for Thorncliffe Park and Etobicoke on Monday as the relay works its way through downtown; other events are planned in Etobicoke on Tuesday; a visit to Mel Lastman Square in North York on Wednesday; York and then the downtown core on Thursday; and finally the opening ceremonies Friday night. Who says pizza has to be high in calories? TDSB should The bad news is that the rain on Saturday forced us to put our backyard barbecue party on hold until later in the summer. The good news? Moving indoors didn’t stop us from having a good time. We ordered fast food instead. Well, reasonably fast, anyway. Me: “So, what’s it gonna be, kids?” Kaylee: “Pizza.” Brandon: “Pizza.” Paige: “Pizza.” Lucas: “Pizza.” Me: “Wow. That was easy. Nice to see the weather didn’t put a damper on anybody’s spirits. So it’s unanimous. Chinese food it is. Coming right up. I‘ll call Egg Roll Egg Roll right now.” Kaylee: “Jamieeeee. Do you have to try and make a joke out of everything?” Me: “Ah, so you are admitting I’m funny?” Brandon: “She said ‘try’ Jamie. I wouldn’t get too excited if I were you.” Me: “Thanks for the vote of confidence. Anyhow, what do yuz all want on it?” Paige: “No pepperoni.”
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Lucas: “And no sausage.” Kaylee: “Or green peppers.” Brandon: “Or red peppers.” Paige: “Same goes for mushrooms and onions.” Me: “Just to recap: no pepperoni, no sausage, no green peppers, no red peppers, no mushrooms, no onions. Anything else you don’t want?” Lucas: “Yeah, anchovies, though I don’t even know what they are. I have a special knack for not liking things I’ve never tried.” Me: “So, it looks like toppings are out. I guess it’ll have to be cheese only, then. Coming right up.” Kaylee: “Cheese? Are you kidding? Ewwwww.” Me: “How can you have a pizza without cheese? That’s all a pizza is: cheese, over a bit of tomato sauce.” Brandon: “Tomato sauce? Double ewwwww.”
Me: “Any other requests before I pick up the phone to order?” Paige: “Just one. Make sure they leave off the crust. It’s just a waste of time. It takes forever to cut it off.” Lucas: “No dough, either, while you’re at it. Dough just doesn’t do it for me.” Me: “So, let’s see if I’ve got this straight. That makes it one small pizza... Kaylee: “Small? Forget that. It has be large.” Brandon: “No way. It has to be extra large.” Me: “Extra large it is, with nothing on it, nothing under it, nothing in it, nothing around it. Nothing even remotely in the same jurisdiction as it. Which, by process of elimination means we’re talking dipping sauce only. Everybody is OK with just dipping sauce?” Paige: “As long as it’s not garlic, of course.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. be broken into smaller boards
To the editor: The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is again back in the news. The Ontario government finally has set up a special panel to consult with the public and find if it is time to break up this huge white elephant into smaller boards, which operated that way before amalgamation. The TDSB is too large. It has had a very difficult time working within its financial means. I hope that this commission comes back after public consultations with a recommendation of breaking up the mega board into smaller boards. The newer, smaller boards should start with a new mandate to serve our children’s future for competing in the global world. Moe Irshad

‘One Good Marriage’ runs July 2 to 12 >>>from page 1 Magazine award for Outstanding New Play at the 2002 Summerworks Festival. The script has been updated with help from Reycraft for this production. The two-person play is about a couple, Steph (Becky Shrimpton) and Stewart (Matthew Gin), who gather a group of new friends (the audience) for their first wedding anniversary. The wedding anniversary reflects on another milestone in the couple’s life, a tragedy that occurred shortly after they left their wedding reception. The dark comedy tackles a number of subjects, Rose said, particularly loss, guilt and the process of healing. She said the two characters are dealing with post traumatic stress disorder. “It asks how does a marriage survive tragedy when you have no support system, when your community is taken away from you,” she said. Preparing for her own wedding this August and directing this play, Rose said she’s realized how a wedding is as much about the people witnessing it as is about the couple. “You become really aware of your community and people you haven’t seen in 10 years who book a plane and travel halfway across the world for you, and how much the strength of our relationships can be dependent on the people around us supporting and loving us through difficult times,” she said. The play questions how does a marriage survive, particularly a new one when it should be at its happiest, when this support system is taken away. “This is very exciting theatre. It’s very realistic,” she said. “The characters are very funny. They have a strong sense of irony about life and they’re interesting and they invite you to laugh with them.” The play is being staged at Trinity St. Paul’s United Church, 427 Bloor St. W., put on by Staircase Theatre. The play runs for 60 minutes. General admission tickets cost $12. For tickets, visit www.fringetoronto.com

Community invited to take part in festivities >>>from page 1 launch of programming in the park. “We really see this as a community event,” said Arlene Madell, head of marketing and communications with the Aga Khan Museum, noting Reflections is inspired by the Silk Road, a network of trade routes that connected India and China to the Mediterranean Sea.
The festivities start at 4 p.m. with plenty of things to see and do including dance, poetry and music performances inspired by the Silk Road. “And we got a whole section for kids,” added Madell, including such activities as lantern-making, face-painting and story-telling sessions. There will also be a souk bazaar
highlighting culture from the region. There is no entry fee to the park for the event and most activities, including the mainstage performances, are free. The Pan Am flame is scheduled to arrive at 8:15 p.m. carried by Leila Keshavjee, who lives in Ward 26 (Don Valley West) and also works as a tour guide at the park. Visit agakhanpark.org

Special carpool lanes installed all throughout the Greater Toronto Area for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games went into effect this week, and the verdict from drivers was less than flattering. On Monday, the first day of enforcement, jam-ups were reported on major roadways such as Hwy. 401 and Don Valley Parkway. The OPP was kept busy handing out $110 tickets to singleoccupant vehicles improperly using the lanes. You need to have a special Games pass or have at least three people in your vehicle, reduced to two persons at the end of July, to legally use the lanes. Emergency vehicles and taxis can also make use of the lanes.
Express rider numbers have been tallied wUP
One month in and ridership of the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link appears to be within Metrolinx’s forecasts. The provincial transit planning agency unveiled the fourstop train connection between Union Station and Toronto Pearson airport in early June. Despite reports of empty trains on its first day of service Saturday, June 6, UP President Kathy Haley told Metrolinx’s board of directors last week the line is averaging 2,250 riders per day. This projects favourably to the stated goal of having 5,000 daily riders on average by the end of the link’s first year of operation.
pothole repair update by city wreleased
The City of Toronto released its latest statistics for pothole repairs last week and it would appear the numbers remain high. According to available figures posted by the city’s winter operations division, the city averages 237,000 pothole fills a year. So far this year it’s at 141,693, a number which includes 4,519 filled potholes during the week of June 15-19. Last year the city set a record with 354,000 pothole repairs between January and November.

Cultura Festival attracts top talent thanks to Pan Am Games DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com This year’s Cultura Festival at Mel Lastman Square is bringing in a pair of respected musicians thanks to the city hosting the 2015 Pan Am Games. This is talent the local festival would normally not be able to attract if it weren’t for the Games, which run concurrently with the festival, said festival producer Beth Ward. “They came specifically to Toronto to play at the Pan Am Games, but while they’re in town we were able to secure their performance at our festival,” Ward said. “That’s a positive relationship that we’ve had as we otherwise, as a community festival, wouldn’t be able to bring in these acts because of the travel costs and things like that.” The sixth annual festival runs Fridays from July 3 to 24 from 6 to 11:30 p.m. The two Pan Am performers are Cubanborn Alex Cuba, and Canadian-born, Belizebased Danny Michel a n d t h e Ga r i f u n a Collective. In addition to the four-week festival attracting Pan Am entertainers, a Pan Am Games-related art exhibit will hang in the lower gallery of the adjacent Toronto Centre for the Arts. The exhibit is called Canadian Athletes: A Flame Within History. It features portraits of Canadian athletes. “With the city buzzing for Pan Am, we wanted to jump on that,” Ward said of this year’s festival. The festival is a diverse cultural event that features musical acts on the main stage, along with buskers, parading musicians, dancers, arts, children’s activities including face painting, food and more. Each night ends with a
movie on the big screen under the stars. Alex Cuba will perform July 10 at 8 p.m. The British Columbia-based musician performs music influenced by his Spanish-language roots, plus his adopted French/English nation for a tropical roots/Latin soul sound. Danny Michel and the Garifuna Collective will hit the main stage July 17 at 8 p.m. The Canadian-born and multi Juno Awardnominated per for mer relocated to Belize in 2011 and later joined up with the Garifuna Collective, an AfroAmerindian group. Michel performs a variety of music genres. The other headliners in the festival are Divine Brown on July 3, 8 p.m., and Les Tireux d’Roches on July 24, 8 p.m. “We always try to bring culturally diverse but commercially accessible music to our festival. Because it’s a community event, our mandate is something different, something you’ve never seen before,” Ward said. If you’re not after music, there’s more to the festival than just that. “Everyone should come out,” Ward said. “It’s a really great festival for all ages. It’s not specifically for kids or families, but there’s obviously a lot of family programming. Who wouldn’t want to see someone eat fire or jump on a 25-foot unicycle or experience new bands or music they’ve never heard of?” T h e R oy a l O n t a r i o Museum will also be on hand promoting its new exhibit Pompeii, In the Shadow of the Volcano, with artefacts available for people to see. Admission is free. Mel Lastman Square is at 5100 Yonge St. and it accessible by subway.

At SickKids, we believe that every child deserves every chance to live. That’s why we're passionate about the Herbie Fund, which brings children from around the world to SickKids - one of the world’s largest and most respected paediatric health-science centres - for life-saving or life-changing surgeries they can’t get in their own countries or regions. Since the inception of the fund in 1979, over 765 children from 105 countries have received specialized surgical treatment. The Herbie Fund is supported entirely by community donations. Together, on Herbie Day, June 19, we raised $170,000. So thank you for your generosity! Metrolinx report puts pressure on both mayor and council There are a couple of ways to look at the new report from Metrolinx that draws attention to the need for a downtown relief subway line, for which no funding exists. One way is to see it as a stick with which to hit the Toronto council-supported Scarborough subway extension and Mayor John Tory’s proposed SmartTrack system: one an unnecessary project, the second a project that will only provide shortterm relief; and both, unlike the relief line, close to fully funded. The Metrolinx report, Yonge Relief Network Study, was released in June, but Tory and council have
david nickle the city had access to countless other opinions and studies indicating the Yonge subway line is running over capacity and a relief line looping down from the Bloor-Danforth line and possibly points north is the cure. The study lays it out in starker terms. Toronto and Metrolinx have made headway in mitigating the crowding on the Yonge line. The automatic train control and new, roomier trains help, as does the GO Regional Express plan
that will form the backbone of Tory’s SmartTrack proposal. That will meet needs over the next 15 years. Past that, we’re all back in the same swamping boat. Given all that, one might call Toronto’s political leadership for being short-sighted and pandering – funding inadequate short-term transit plans at the expense of a long-term solution. That is a legitimate call. But the only call that follows from that is a “throw the bums out” movement, and there are three years before anyone can even think about that. If the city really wants to

serve only a small portion of the city. There is a greater pretext for doing so in the matter of the Downtown Relief Line, in that all of the city loses out when the hub of the system crowds to the point of dysfunction. But on the subject of dysfunction, the politics won’t make it easy. The suburbandowntown rift that’s defined this city since amalgamation in the late 1990s is showing
no sign of healing. But sooner rather than later, someone is going to have to make that choice. And once that’s done, we’re all going to have to start paying, and it will be considerably more than we would have with more rational and evidence-based leadership.

pay for a short subway line in Scarborough and a multistation build along the Regional Express line that runs close to that subway, it must either resign itself to the hub of its entire transit system failing or come up with a lot more money. It’s not inconceivable that council could do so. In the last term, council voted to raise property taxes to pay for a subway that would

Cheering for the team behind the team Chevrolet gives thanks to the volunteers at the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games By: Stephen K. Carlisle, President and Managing Director, General Motors Canada
This year, more than 250,000 people will arrive in our city to join us for The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, events which will inspire and engage generations of Canadians.
The athletes will be the stars of the Games. Their stories, their hard work and their victories are what move us to celebrate their achievements, to take pride in our hometown competitors and to recognize those from around the world.
Dominic Carabine Coach & Volunteer, Toronto
Congratulations
Dominic Carabine
Metroland’s Community Champion Dominic has been volunteering in the community for the past 10 years. He has coached and managed soccer and hockey teams with the Toronto Azzurri Soccer Club, Duffield Devils and St Wilfrid's Elementary School, with the commitment to build team spirit for all the children participating. He encourages all children to try their best and to respect each other's abilities. He fosters a “never give up” attitude while allowing the children to dream big and to pursue their goals. His dedication to the community while balancing work and family life has been a challenge, but he does it for all the children on their respective teams and for his own two children. He strongly believes his community involvement sets an example to his own children to give back to others in whichever way you can.

It’s also with pride that we welcome our neighbours to Toronto and its surrounding areas, because it’s our city, it’s our province and it’s our country. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community, and we’re ready.
Supporting Our Volunteers At Chevrolet, we recognize that the 23,000 volunteers at this year’s Games are the engine that makes it all possible. We’re ready because of those volunteers. We believe in the power of possibilities and there’s an incredible potential in each of them. The hard work of our volunteers should be recognized. They are like the pit crew in a grueling race and they deserve our thanks for the early mornings, late nights and their unfaltering dedication. Four years ago, Chevrolet committed to being the official sponsor of the volunteers for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. A commitment made out of respect for the volunteers own unfaltering commitment.
It was also a natural extension of Chevrolet’s long history of supporting Canadian sports. As the organizers have worked to shape the Games, we’ve worked alongside them to provide the support needed for our volunteers to make these Games the greatest they’ve ever been. This has meant providing Chevrolet vehicles to help the volunteers behind the scenes to prepare the field of play, to shuttle athletes to and from their matches, to enhance the spectator experience, and to participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. No matter how you enjoy the Games you’re likely to see these hardworking volunteers— but you should also think of the ones you don’t see, those integral to bringing the Games to life before a single race was run, before a single ball was thrown, and before any athletes proudly walked the Opening Ceremony to the applause of people from around the world. Take a moment to join us in thanking them.
17 | NORTH YORK MIRROR | Thursday, July 2, 2015
To the 23,000 Volunteers of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, we say
THANK YOU! Together we celebrate the power of play.

Forever homes sought for a couple of sweet pets Our July pets Gunter the tabby and Fiona the miniature poodle are looking to find lasting summer love with a new forever home. One-year-old neutered Gunter is a gorgeous brown tabby who is super sweet and super shy. He arrived at the animal shelter when his owner took ill and could no longer care for him. He is looking for a quiet and understanding home that will let him come out of his shell at his own pace. Gunter lived with other cats in his previous home but is too nervous at the shelter to venture out of his security bed to meet any new feline friends. He is up to date with vaccines and microchipped. If you are interested in meeting Gunter, contact Toronto Animal Services

Fiona is a four-year-old spayed female miniature poodle mix who is curious, playful and very friendly. Fiona is blind, but not being able to see doesn’t hold her back at all. Once she learns the layout of your house, which usually takes about 24 hours, she has no trouble getting around. She climbs stairs easily and navigates quite well. To keep her eyes healthy, she requires eye drops twice a day and she doesn’t seem to mind having them put in. The cost is approximately $50 for a bottle that lasts about six weeks. The drops will be needed for the remainder of her life. Fiona prefers to be where her people are. “The challenge with Fiona is remembering that she is blind. She gets along so well, we often forget that we need to be her eyes when out for walks,” says Pam from Tiny Paws Rescue. “We are looking for a loving home for Fiona, but one without children due to the fact she doesn’t know

to move out of the way or close her eyes to protect them if something is coming towards her face.” Fiona is up to date with vaccines and microchipped. A home where she isn’t left alone often for long periods of time would be ideal. Fiona and her foster mom will be at the Tiny Paws booth at the Dog Lovers Days event at Downsview Park this weekend (July 4 and 5) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Learn more about Fiona at www.tpdr.ca Lorraine Houston is director of Speaking of Dogs, an organization devoted to education, outreach and rescue. VALU MART PRESENTS CHEQUE TO NORTH YORK WOMEN’S SHELTER On June 25, Liz Wilson, owner of Wilson’s Valu Mart, and Linda Macorquodale, head cashier, ,presented a $1,657 cheque to Lisa Bertucca, North York Women’s Shelter executive assistant. The funds were all donated by generous grocery store shoppers. Thank you for your help!
Dufferin/Lawrence ‘overdevelopment’ opposed by community council North York Community Council has voted to send city staff to the Ontario Municipal Board to oppose construction of a three-tower development on Dufferin Street, north of Lawrence Avenue West. The proposal “represents overdevelopment of the site,” according to a city staff report. The decision must still be
approved by city council July 7. The proposed would result in a mixed-use development consisting of 374 residential units. There would be a 12and 24- storey building, connected by a six-storey base and another six-storey building. Besides overdevelopment of the site, the city staff report also notes the proposal does
not conform to the city’s official plan or the results of the Dufferin Street Avenue Study, nor the proposed Dufferin Street Secondary Plan; its height, scale and density are not consistent with the existing planned context; and it does not adequately address guidelines set out in the Avenues and Mid-Rise Building Study.
