Youth soccer club practice gets some special guests Toronto FC, Tottenham Hotspur drop into Sunnybrook Park CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com

oronto FC’s Jermain Defoe stepped onto the soccer field at Sunnybrook Park to the surprise and excitement of all the kids from the North Toronto Nitros FC youth soccer club during their practice session Tuesday.

“He’s probably my favourite player,” said Daniel Casa, 10. “He’s just really clean when he has the ball.

He never panics.”

Joining Defoe was his current teammate Bright Dike as well as members of his former English Premier League club, the Tottenham Hotspur, who were scheduled to play the Toronto FC in an exhibition game Wednesday, July 23.

Special Olympics Ontario athletes also joined the

North Toronto Nitros FC in the afternoon training session led by coaches and players from both professional soccer teams.

“We really have a great relationship with Toronto FC. It’s great for the boys and girls to have role models,” said John Hyland, technical director of the North Toronto Nitros FC, who helped organize the special event. “Trying to keep it a secret was fun.”

The kids had plenty of questions for the players when they arrived.

One asked Aaron Lennon, who plays for the Tottenham Hotspur, if he’s ever received a red card.

“Not since school days,” Lennon replied, smiling.

Ledley King, a Tottenham Hotspur alumnus who has the record for scoring the quickest Premier League

goal (under 10 seconds), also dropped in for a visit and told the next generation of soccer players why he loved the sport.

“As a small boy, I loved to play football. If you love doing something, keep doing it,” he said.

Defoe added he just had a passion for scoring goals, while Lennon quipped soccer is the only thing he can do.

That gave hope for Anthony Alfino, 10, who liked Lennon because he was shorter in stature but still a very good player.

“I’m more of a defensive type player,” Anthony said.

Ralph Priso, 11, who got all the players to sign his shirt, was pleasantly surprised to see some of the players he would normally see on TV. “I didn’t think the first team players would come,” he said.

Not all resolutions can be settled without assistance.

And when assistance is needed, York University’s Osgoode Mediation Clinic (OMC) is there to offer it.

The clinic, born out of an alternative dispute resolution project by four students in 2006 who wanted to create opportunity for law students to develop skills and practical experience, saw the mediation clinical program turn into the OMC in 2009.

Services, all free, are provided by law students in

the areas of youth, housing, campus and family conflict.

Students act as mediators to try to avoid cases heading to court, which can be costly, and aim for a win-win situation for all parties.

“Conflict is anything between two or more individuals that need resolution,” said Martha Simmons, director of the OMC and mediation intensive clinical program, who supervises the cases.

“It can be disputes between family members, or neighbour disputes involving noise in apartment buildings. We create a plan that works for them.”

The boundaries are roughly just north of Steeles Avenue, Yonge Street, Eglinton Avenue and just west of Jane Street, Simmons said, adding similar services are offered by other organizations outside those boundaries.

Training seminars are offered to community groups, middle schools and youthfocused organizations about how to resolve conflicts themselves, and conflict workshops teach practical strategies to manage verbal attacks and bullying.

Ford, hecklers need to stick to city’s issues I

t happened on Monday and it will probably happen again. Rob Ford will attend an event and hecklers will protest against him, turning whatever the intended purpose of the event was into a sideshow of the debate over the competency and morality of Ford continuing as mayor.

It’s a bad situation, which needs to be re-examined both by the Ford campaign and those opposed to him.

On Monday, Ford attended the opening ceremonies for Woburn Park in the North Toronto area. The park means a lot to residents who live in the area, but you would never have known that by the circus surrounding Ford. our view Hecklers interrupted him, and the media fired questions at him Fact-based about his time in rehab, his use of drugs and more while Ford posed discussion for photos on playground equipment. What wasn’t discussed was necessary Woburn Park.

It was a similar scene at the recent launch of the Pan Am/Parapan Games countdown clock in Nathan Phillips Square. It’s one year until Toronto hosts the games, but much of the event seemed to be dominated by a confrontation between an angry Ford supporter and those protesting against the mayor and the media in general.

Both sides need to do better. Ford needs to respect the difference between a community event and a campaign event; and so do those who are following him around protesting.

There is nothing more for the protesters to gain if they want to complain about Ford’s personal life.

Whether they are wearing shirts or not, they need to stick to the issues of the campaign. Yelling at Ford about crack smoking gains them nothing.

Right now, the protesters are probably helping Ford more than hurting him.

What we want from this mayoral campaign is some solid, fact-based discussion on how to pay for transit improvements in Toronto, whether to abolish or stay with the Land Transfer Tax, and how to attract and keep businesses operating within the city’s borders.

Those questions need to be asked and answered in an appropriate manner, rather than a circus-like atmosphere in which the campaign is currently.

Summer fun on the streets of Toronto

T

he local calendar was packed to the brim last weekend.

In addition to the Jays/ Texas Rangers series and the Honda Indy, there had to be at least a dozen street festivals, too.

I never realized we had that many festivals going on at one time. I was so intrigued I figured I’d check them all out.

Then the rain came pouring down on Saturday which meant, if I was actually going to do it, instead of the luxury of spreading them out evenly over the weekend I’d have to jam them all in to one day.

It was a tall order, to be sure. But, hey, I like challenges. So I got up bright and early Sunday morning hopped in the car intent on giving it my best shot.

I decided to start with a classic, the Extremely Popular Annual DowntownFest. You couldn’t ask for a better one to kick things off and I was really pumped.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Alas, I never made it. No matter which direction I turned I kept running into DisruptionFest.

It’s been growing year after year, but I’ve never been a big fan. It’s always the same old, same old and this year was true to form. At virtually every intersection I was re-routed by its partner street fairs: ConstructionFest, Road ClosureFest, DetourFest, You Name ItFest. And Not Necessarily In That OrderFest.

I’m not crazy about of any of them, either. They really get my goat, who incidentally is also not too fond of them, as it turns out.

What troubles us is that they’re tied to three other fests that we don’t particularly care for either: the Seemingly Endless Gardiner Expressway MaintenanceFest, the

Ubiquitous Way Overdue Pothole FixFest and one making its inauspicious debut this summer, the Doing A Lot Of Miscellaneous Repairs Now In Hopes Of Somehow Averting The Anticipated Commuting Nightmares During The Pan Am Games Next SummerFest. Also known as Lots Of LuckFest.

The offshoot? Local traffic gets to the virtual StandstillFest.

Ah yes, the legendary Standstillfest. Where you’re serenaded in the background by the not so dulcet tones of Driver Expletive DeletedFest and Horn HonkingFest, which, neither me nor my goat are also not too wild about, if you’re keeping score at tome.

Nope, it wasn’t quite the best way to start my festival search. So I decided to turn the car around, drop it off at home and once re-energized, head to the subway for a fresh start. It was just what the doctor ordered.

Once through the turnstiles,

the smile quickly returned to my face.

Alas, just a few stops after I hopped on the train there was a familiar weekend message on the intercom system: Passengers were being ordered to hop off and advised to make their way to the bus platform for Shuttlefest.

It was tempting, to be sure, but I just wasn’t in the mood. So I declined the offer and decided to do the rest of my street festival seeking on foot.

As soon as I got outside the station I took a deep breath. Then another.

And another. After which I immediately started coughing.

Just my luck. I was smack dab in the middle of SmogFest.

Oh well, there’s always next weekend.

North York Community House video on mentorship garners national award Taking a page from the popular appeal of game shows, North York Community House’s Village Bloggards have won an award for producing an entertaining video showing the importance of mentors.

The video, called VB Games, won the mentorship category in the firstever Girls Voice contest organized by the Canadian Women’s Foundation.

The competition challenged girls across Canada to create videos in different categories including mentorship, the media, dealing with violence and feeling confident.

Since the temporary local closure of Keele Street began on July 7, 2014, significant construction work has been underway to remove traffic bridges, install utility connections and backfill over the station structures.

The detour route via Murray Ross Parkway/Tangiers Road/Toro Road will be open throughout this period for traffic to bypass the closure area. Detour signs are posted to redirect through traffic to alternate routes. Motorists can expect to experience traffic delays.

ANDREW PALAMARCHUK Two men are recovering after a car rolled over following a collision with a TTC bus in North York Monday evening.

The crash happened on Bayview Avenue south of York Mills Road at 6:58 p.m.

A man, about 30 years old, was trapped in the flipped car and had to be extricated by emergency workers. The man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital with what were originally thought to be life-threatening injuries. He is expected to survive.

A growing enterprise North York’s Black Creek Community Farm is Toronto’s largest urban farm

s Abdinasir Mohamed, Colleen Moloney and Suzanne Soroka harvest cucumbers on this eightacre farm, it’s easy to imagine they are pulling crops from soil in the countryside miles from the city.

But the roar of the occasional plane overhead and the sight of apartment buildings just a stone’s throw away are reminders that the city provides an integral backdrop to Black Creek Community Farm southeast of North York’s Jane Street and Steeles Avenue intersection.

“You don’t (usually) really see a farm around buildings.

It’s cool to come here. It’s really great. I’ve had strawberries, I’ve had the kale, I’ve had the wheat grass,” said Mohamed, who lives in an apartment building near the farm. “(I like) the health aspect of it. It’s good to learn how to make your own food and grow your food. It’s a life skill that one needs. It’s a great atmosphere to be in the outside and have that added benefit.”

Moloney, an Etobicoke resident who in May began a 32-week internship program at the farm, and Soroka, a resident of the Junction who started as a volunteer about the same time, agreed.

“I’ve been studying sustainable urban agriculture for the last four years at the University of Guelph so it was time to get my hands dirty and put some of that (education) to work,” Moloney said.

“But it’s really feeling we have a crisis food-wise and nutrition-wise, especially in cities, and I don’t think it’s sustainable to be bringing in food from California (for example) that I think we should be able to produce here.”

Moloney has four acres of land in the Kawartha region and hopes to one day pro-

Visitors will be able to tour the farm, meet farmers, see the honey bees, visit the new greenhouses, learn how to grow their own multivitamins, dig into a hearty farm lunch and paint a scarecrow.

“The festival is our big open-door event.

Saturday Come one, come all. Check it out, have fun, hang out, have good food, go for a tour, run around, see the trails,” executive director Gavin Dandy said.

The festival is organized by Everdale and project partners FoodShare, Afri-Can Food Basket and Fresh City Farms with support from the Driftwood Community Centre and the Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre.

The farm’s other partners include Toronto and Region Conservation for the Living City, Toronto Public Health, Black Creek Community Health Centre, Green Change and York University.

The festival runs July 26 from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

The farm is at 4929 Jane St. south of Steeles Avenue.

Soroka has a similar dream of buying property outside the city to grow vegetables to feed family, friends and neighbours.

She’s thrilled she can farm now in Toronto.

‘It’s not a garden, it’s a farm that produces jobs...’

“I live in the Junction and we have a spot at the farmers’ market there and it’s just amazing that 12 kilometres away, they’re growing food so I wanted to be part of this,” she said.

Soroka loves the idea of eating vegetables grown in Toronto rather than imported from California, Florida and Mexico.

“It gets a bit questionable (why so much food is imported). Why don’t you use farmland here?” she said.

Only in its second year, the site is Toronto’s largest urban farm as well as the city’s first

full-scale organic vegetable farm.

Even executive director Gavin Dandy is surprised by the farm’s quick success.

“We didn’t think it would move this quickly. It’s been a wild ride and we’re enjoying every minute of it,” he said.

Owned by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), the land is leased to Everdale, a notfor-profit organization that provides hands-on farming education through a number of programs.

“We want it to become a neighbourhood resource like a park, a farm park,” Dandy said. “A place where you can come to buy food or take a workshop or just to sit around or walk the trails or hang out.”

During a tour last week, resource developer Verity Dimock showed off the farm,

starting with the farmhouse that greets visitors as they enter the site.

Built in 1853, the house was moved from the old village of Weston to this location in the early 1950s by the TRCA for the Living City, which didn’t want to lose the home to development.

The house and surrounding land was used by the superintendent of nearby Black Creek Pioneer Village until 2007 when the conservation authority turned the house into office and community space, Dimock said.

That lasted until budgeting pressures forced the conservation authority to seek new uses for the farm.

Not wanting to lose the land to developers, the conservation authority put out tenders to see if anyone was interested in using the site in a creative way that generated revenue, Dimock said.

As she walked around the farm, Dimock pointed to two greenhouses built this month by more than 100 volunteers under the direction of Adam

Montri from Michigan State University’s horticultural department. The greenhouses will allow hardy vegetables such as spinach to be grown during the winter.

She rhymed off many of the five dozen or so vegetables grown on the farm including onions, leeks, tomatoes, pattypan squash, radishes and peppers in addition to the crops such as collard greens that appeal to the local Caribbean community.

The public can buy produce from the farm through a subscription Harvest Share program or at local farmers’ markets.

Walking by fenced-off bee hives, Dimock spoke about the farm’s intern program, volunteer opportunities and workshops.

A school program will launch this year and a summer camp is expected to begin next year.

Plans for an outdoor classroom called the pavilion are in the works, as are plans to begin making maple syrup from the forest that extends to the Black Creek ravine.

“It’s a good use of the space. First and foremost, we’re growing (food) to

serve the community. We’re improving access to healthy food, which is important and we’re also a learning centre so we’re demonstrating how to do this for other people who want to try the same thing.

We’re educating, particularly young people, about the importance of healthy food and also how it’s not that difficult to do it, even in a small space,” Dimock said.

“It’s amazing to see people literally showing up every day and the most consistent comment we get is ‘We had no idea there was an eightacre farm hidden behind the fence’ and when people step on to the site, just the jaws drop as they see what’s happening here.”

The farm can be an example to other communities, Dandy said.

“It’s not a garden, it’s a farm that produces jobs, it produces income, it produces economic opportunities, it produces training opportunities. It’s not just good for this neighbourhood. It can work in lots of neighbourhoods all across the country.”

The new screens will make it possible for city staff to rapidly dispatch police, fire or other personnel to deal with a traffic incident, said Buckley.

While the majority of the feeds covered traffic at expressways like the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner, he promised more cameras at major city arterials and better coverage in the downtown core, in addition to future improved coordination of traffic signal timings,

TTC surface transit operation, curbside management and construction-related lane closures.

Mayor Ford said the new centre and future improvements prove the city is on track when it comes to dealing with congestion.

“This is real action,” said Ford during prepared remarks. “This new traffic operations centre is another example of our strategic investments in traffic fighting technology.”

Despite congestion getting worse - to the point where it now costs the average city resident over three-and-a-half

hours of lost time per month due to gridlock according to city data - Buckley said most rankings had Toronto in “middle of the range”- placing anywhere from ninth to eleventh for the worst traffic on the continent.

Even with the upgrades, however, Buckley cautioned improvements would only come on an incremental basis, meaning no quick fix for traffic congestion is coming.

“Unfortunately this isn’t going to be a situation where we flip a switch on one day and everyone notices things are better,” he said.

Milos, who was beaten earlier this month in the semi-finals at Wimbledon by seven-time champion Roger Federer, said he hopes the donation will remove barriers and allow youngsters to achieve their dreams.

This was Milos’ second donation to Holland Bloorview’s foundation.

In February 2013, the site was the first recipient of funding from the Milos Raonic Foundation, which donated $40,000 to establish the Milos Raonic Kids Agility Clinic at Holland Bloorview, which

Job identity is in the cards at pioneer village I f you had lived in an Ontario village 150 years ago, what would you have been?

A doctor? A farmer? A seamstress?

Black Creek Pioneer Village is offering a chance to discover which occupation you may have found yourself practicing through its Village Folk program.

When visitors enter the village, they will pick their

pioneer identity by choosing one of six cards.

In addition to doctor, farmer and seamstress, the other occupations are farmer, hostess and tradesman.

On the back of the card, participants will be encouraged to try six hands-on activities related to their 1860s identity.

As they make their way around the village, they will

discover how they would have lived their daily lives.

For example, as a doctor, how would you have fixed a broken arm?

As a farmer, how would you have carried water with a yoke and bucket?

As a hostess, how would you have greeted guests?

As a cook, how would you have known the fire was hot enough to bake bread?

Abshir Hassan: Police canvass Lawrence Heights neighbourhood in search of clues Police canvassed the Lawrence Heights neighbourhood Saturday where a popular teacher was shot dead earlier this month.

Homicide Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan, along with 13 Division officers, handed out pamphlets near 11 Flemington Rd. and sought witnesses to the July 8 shoot-

ing that took the life of Abshir Hassan, 31, and injured a 22-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman.

Police are looking for two young men who

fled the scene in what is believed to be a grey or silver four-door sedan.

Investigators are asking residents who have personal security camera footage north and east of

Flemington Road to review recordings the night of the shooting.

Police believe Hassan, who went outside to move his car around midnight to avoid getting a ticket when

he was gunned down, was the victim of a random shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416808-7408 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8744.

TTC Tunnel Borer wA deal deal now off between the TTC

and a Chinese company to purchase four tunnel borer machines (TBM) is now off.

The deal for the TBMs, which were used to excavate subway tunnels connecting Downsview Station and six planned stops as part of the Toronto-York Spadina subway extension, was shelved after Lovesuns Tunnelling Canada withdrew its $9.2 million offer, according to media reports.

No reason was given for the dissolution of the sale, and it’s likely the TTC will look for a new buyer.

Previously the TBMs were offered to manufacturer Caterpillar to buy back, but the offer was also rejected.

Detour update at Eglinton West Starting this week pedestrians looking to get to Eglinton West Station have to detour around the Eglinton Crosstown LRT construction site at the intersection of Allen Road and Eglinton Avenue West.

TO in TRANSIT new walkway areas – which will mean a longer route to get to the station – while it continues Crosstown tunnel shaft construction at the intersection.

Those walking to the station from the west will now have to detour north via Park Hill Road and then back south to Eglinton.

Pedestrians coming from the east will no longer be able to cross at the Allen northbound ramp, which is closed, but will instead have to cross from the south side of Eglinton via a detour travelling through Ben Nobleman Park.

Also closed for the foreseeable future is the pedestrian path along Wembley Road, parallel to the Allen.
