North York Harvest Food Bank, which serves the former City of York, will be joining food banks across Canada to take part this week in an annual campaign to fight hunger. Founded in 2012, the Give 30 campaign continues to focus on hunger in Canada and motivate people of all backgrounds to give to food banks during the month of Ramadan. Those who are fasting during Ramadan are encouraged to donate a portion of the money they save by skipping meals over the month. People who aren’t fasting can still participate, said Ziyaad Mia, Give 30 founder. “Brown bag your lunch for
the month or tally up 30 days of coffee money. Whatever it is, it can make a difference in the lives of those who don’t have enough to eat,” Mia said in a statement. Give 30 raised almost $40,000 in its first year. Last year, the campaign received more than $90,000 in donations with food banks from three provinces participating. ‘People voted for the future,’ Liberal supporters boast LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Voters have put opposition party tactics and Liberal political scandals aside and are focusing on a positive future under Kathleen Wynne, supporters said at the premier’s victory party. Nor th York’s Thelma Casimir, from Wynne’s Don Valley West riding, believes voters were disappointed Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak and NDP leader Andrea Horwath indicated they would vote against the Liberal budget, triggering the provincial election. “Let’s think about how much money they (taxpayers) lost because of these two. Taxpayers’ money went to waste,” she said. “They just wanted an election. They just wanted to get up on their high horses and call ‘Election, election.’ That’s wrong.” Voters were willing to put controversies, including the gas plants and Ornge air ambulance scandals, in the past and focus on the future,

Casimir said. Maureen Adamson, of the Beach, agreed. “I actually think people are bored with the gas plant scandal. voters rejected Hudak’s plan to cut 100,000 public sector workers and create one million jobs under a formula challenged by many economists. “That was really upsetting all the voters because what voters expected was that the one million jobs was not possible and the 100,000 jobs (cuts) was possible so in this way, they didn’t trust Team Hudak and they didn’t support him,” he said. At her victory party, Wynne
thanked voters for her new strong mandate. “You voted for jobs. You voted for growth. Thank you for voting to build Ontario up. Let me tell you your government is ready to do exactly that,” she said. “You have put your trust in us. And we will not let you down. You have put your trust in us to move this province forward. And to do it with integrity. And we will not take you for granted.” Wynne captured 26,215 votes, followed by PC candidate David Porter with 14,082. P o r t e r, a c h a r t e r e d accountant with more than 20 years experience in the financial sector, said Ontario voters couldn’t stomach the Conservatives’ message of needing to slash the province’s $12.5-billion deficit. “Let’s face it, people don’t like to deal with the realities we presented,” he said. “People were generally scared of what may happen. They (Liberals) raised the spectre of (former premier) Mike Harris.”

W
ith last week’s majority government win by the Kathleen Wynne Liberals in the provincial election, her party has been given a strong mandate by voters in Toronto and surrounding areas to make transit a top priority over the next four years. Her victory can also be interpreted as strong support for the Metrolinx Big Move transit plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) which was first introduced under the Liberal government of Premier Dalton McGuinty back in 2008. The election of Rob Ford as Toronto’s mayor in 2010 and a Liberal minority in the 2011 provincial election saw transit become highly politicized. Talk on how it would be paid for and the debate between LRTs and seemed never-ending. our view subways In the last year, though, we have started making decisions Voters should on our transit future and how to for it. The provincial, city and expect action pay federal governments agreed on an extension of the Bloor-Danforth on transit subway from Kennedy station to the Scarborough Town Centre. The city approved a property tax increase of 0.5 per cent to help pay for its portion. Yet, it comes up repeatedly as a municipal election issue with mayoral candidates Olivia Chow and David Soknacki saying the Scarborough subway extension should be scrapped in favour of an LRT. As was mentioned at a mayoral candidates’ debate this week, discussion of a Scarborough subway extension should be finished. Every Liberal MPP elected in Scarborough supports that subway extension, and made it a key part of their campaigns. Any thought that this could now be changed with a new mayor of Toronto or change in councillors cannot be accepted by Wynne and her majority government. The same goes for a number of other transit plans across the Greater Toronto Area. Voters are expecting transit action from the Liberals. Wynne’s party took away seats from the only PC (Doug Holyday in Etobicoke-Lakeshore) and three NDP incumbents in Toronto due in no small part to her transit plans. The Liberals also gained seats in the 905 communities around the city including Newmarket-Aurora, Durham, Burlington and Halton. Wynne now has an opportunity to take that mandate and do the right thing when it comes to transit expansion across the GTHA.

World Cup on the menu for street festivals Alas, I was busy Saturday night and unable to make it out for both Italy’s crucial opening game victory over England in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the subsequent street celebrations. From what I hear, I missed the party of the year. Oh well, cosi e la vita. The good news is I should more than make up for it this week as I’m planning to take in the immensely popular quadrennial Toronto street festival that occurs during the first round of every World Cup: A Taste Of Every Country That Qualified For The Group Stage. The gala runs from Thursday afternoon through Sunday evening and I’ll be there with bells on, from start to finish. (Being an objective columnist, I’ll be wearing the bell colours of every nation in the tourney.) If you want to say hi at the festival, you can find me in the heart of all the action, at That Little-Known Objective Columnist Hangout That Only I Seem To Have Heard

Without further ado, here are this week’s specials: France at Switzerland, England at Uruguay, Russia at Belgium, Costa Rica at Italy and Portugal at USA. Though not necessarily in that order. So, have you decided what you want, or do you need a little more time? Jamie: “No. I’m good to go, Rex. I know the first round group stage menu
by heart. For Thursday, I’d like to start off with Cote d’Ivoire at Colómbia. Extra spicy. Followed by England at Uruguay. But make them both hard-boiled, please. They’re going to need it.” Waiter: “Two excellent choices. What else?” Jamie: “I’d like to wrap up the first night with Greece at Japan. And from what I’m expecting from the first two entrees, you better make that one over easy.” Waiter: “Over easy, it is. Now, what’ll it be for Friday?” Jamie: “Costa Rica at Italy to kick things off. Both still piping hot, if possible. Then I’d like France at Switzerland. I’m looking forward to that one with plenty of relish. And for the nightcap? Make it Ecuador at Honduras. They should be steaming, in case you hadn’t guessed.” Waiter: “Not to worry. I already had it pencilled in. Now what’s up for Saturday?” Jamie: “I want to open
with Iran at Argentina. Anything with Argentina should be lip-smacking, good, don’t you think? Then I’d like Ghana at Germany, please, followed by BosniaHerzegovina at Nigeria. I’m not expecting anything too fancy from either of those.” Waiter: “I’m with you on that score. And for Sunday?” Jamie: “For starters, Russia at Belgium. This has delicacy written all over it. Then, Algeria at the Korea Republic. Nothing jumps out at me here. Whatever you decide is OK. And I’ll close things out with what could turn out to be the creme de la creme of this festival - Portugal at USA.” Waiter: “Really? Now, are you referring to Portugal with or without?” Jamie: “With Ronaldo, of course. Without him? Starbucks Canada has joined forces with the Yonge Street Mission in Toronto to help disadvantaged youth get workplace training. The Starbucks Canada work-placement and barista training program will also take place in Vancouver and Calgary. The company will invest $840,000 over the next three years to drive this program. The Yonge Street Mission, a community service agency serving thousands of Toronto’s poor and vulnerable since 1896, will offer paid Starbucks workplacements to street-involved and homeless youth through its Employment Services’ Connecting Youth to Work program. Toronto Botanical Garden to host WorldPride-inspired nuptials

hen 14 same-sex brides and grooms arrive at North York’s Toronto Botanical Garden next Wednesday afternoon, they will walk along a rainbow carpet while a jazz duo plays a processional. The eight female couples and six male couples will make their way to an outdoor area where their guests, watching from the perennial garden, will witness them exchanging vows. The ceremony will be officiated by Rev. Brent Hawkes, senior pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, a church that was instrumental in changing the law on same-sex marriage. On a hedge, flowers will spell out “Love Grows Here.” As the couples sign the registry, their personal love stories will be read aloud. Following the wedding, the couples and their guests will move to the outdoor reception area. The white couches, drapes and tents will provide a crisp backdrop to the stunning floral displays.
Guests will be able to write messages of love to the couples to hang on a “wish tree,” a dogwood featuring enormous white blooms resembling doves. Welcome to ‘My Big Fab Gay Garden Wedding’. The nuptials were inspired by the possibilities generated by WorldPride 2014 being held in Toronto from June 20 to 29, Toronto Botanical Garden director of education, Liz Hood, and marketing and communications director, Jenny Rhodenizer, told The Mirror during a tour of the wedding venue. WorldPride is expected to draw well over a million members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community, supporters and other visitors. “Jenny came back from a Toronto Tourism meeting in late winter and said, ‘OK, WorldPride, what are we going to do?’ And we came up with this idea of a group wedding because this is what we do, weddings are what happen in our gardens all the time,” said Hood, who along with Rhodenizer, joyfully throws the word “fab” around to describe many of the wedding’s features.
Same-sex couples ready to exchange vows “So, this idea is that, but really large and really fabulous for WorldPride.” The idea for the group wedding came from this year’s Grammy Awards, which featured Queen Latifah marrying 33 gay and straight couples on stage during Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance of Same Love. “In California, this (same-sex marriage) is a really big issue. We’re fortunate in Canada, it’s become part of our culture, especially here in Toronto. All sorts of same-sex marriages take place,” Hood said. “I see WorldPride as being an opportunity for Toronto and for Canada to really show our stripes and to say ‘This is how an integrated

and progressively minded country operates and we welcome you to join it. And these are the values of the Toronto Botanical Garden.’” Still, although Canada legalized same-sex marriage in 2005, many LGBTQ people from smaller communities have difficulty coming out or having their weddings in their hometowns so this group wedding in Toronto is the perfect opportunity for them, Hood said. “For a lot of LGBTQ people, Toronto is a real haven,” she said. S o m e o f t h e c o u p l e s a re Canadian, including one coming from Nova Scotia. Others include one Canadian partner and the other from another country including the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and the United States. Most of the couples are getting married for the first time. A handful are renewing their vows. “They were disappointed they (their weddings) weren’t the amazing ceremony they wanted it to be,” Rhodenizer said. “When an institution does it, it means something. It’s like a check of approval. We’re standing behind
you and we’re flying the flag.” The event is a group wedding in which each couple will be married individually during a 10-minute abbreviated traditional wedding service as opposed to a mass wedding where all couples are married at the same time. With all the floral arrangements, food, photography and videography, emcee duties and wedding planning services donated, the couples won’t have to spend a dime on their wedding, something sure to make most marrying couples facing large wedding bills envious. A main focus will be sharing the love stories of the couples, Rhodenizer said. “The stories are touching,” she said. “Each one is very different, but there is a similarity of wanting to be surrounded, to be wrapped, in community. Getting married in the garden and being connected with nature is a real driving force of why they wanted to have it here.” Hood agreed. “I think it’s going to be fabulous but touching. Our hope is everybody who leaves here has had the wedding of their dreams,” she said.

Follow us online for World Cup coverage The World Cup is off to a roaring start in Brazil with a number of surprising results that have had Toronto soccer fans either cheering joyfully or shaking their heads in frustration. The tourney opened last Thursday afternoon with host Brazil winning 3-1 over Croatia, setting off cheering in a number of Toronto neighbourhoods including Little Portugal. Fans of Portugal itself were not cheering on Monday, though, as their team fell 4-0 to Germany. Last Friday, the tournament forged an even stronger link with Toronto soccer fans as Jonathan de Guzman, who grew up in Scarborough, was in the starting-11 for the Netherlands game against defending World Cup champs Spain. Although Alzheimer’s and dementia are most often associated with the elderly, they are brain diseases that tug at the heartstrings of three young people who are now teaming up with Baycrest Health Sciences. Baycrest, a world leader in research on the aging brain, is working with North York brothers Soojeong and Soohyung Choe and North York’s Zameer Bharwani, a student at East York’s Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute, to create toolkits to help students launch brain health clubs in high schools. Toronto French School, Northern Secondary School and Earl Haig Secondary School are among the schools that have received the toolkits so far. Dr. Tiffany Chow, who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases at Baycrest’s Sam and Ida Ross Memory Clinic, is inspired by the commitment of the Choe
brothers and Bharwani. “The three guys I’ve teamed up with are leaders among their peers,” she said. “They’re delightful. They’re young but they are also wise, which is such a wonderful thing.” Last summer, the brothers cycled across Canada to raise $8,000 for Alzheimer’s research in memory of their beloved grandfather who died of the fatal brain disease that has no known cause or cure. So o j e o n g s t a r t e d a n Alzheimer’s club at his high school, York Mills Collegiate Institute, before handing the reins over to Soohyung when he left for university. The brothers have also organized other fundraisers and are working to get more young people involved in the cause. Bharwani first became interested in brain health as a Grade 8 student at Valley Park Middle School when he was chosen for a mentoring program that matched him with retired neuroscientist Dr. Dugald Matheson.

After talking to someone who lost his mother to Alzheimer’s, The North York resident began volunteering
at Baycrest and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and realized how devastating Alzheimer’s and dementia
can be. “It affects you when you realize they don’t recognize family and friends,” said Bharwani, who will be heading off to the University of Waterloo in the fall. “They lose so much of the past and the present. It’s hard to describe. It’s mind blowing.” He was so moved by the lives of patients and their families that he started the Initiative for Neuroscience and Dementia to promote awareness of and fund research into neurological diseases. The project has been adopted by seven other schools. Chow was so impressed with the young men’s dedication, she secured $5,000 from the Dementia Alliance and an additional donation from the Moir family to create the first 15 toolkits being distributed to high schools. Complete with T-shirts, the kits show students how to start clubs and get other young people involved.
“This is a cause near and dear to my heart,” Chow said. Today’s young people are very progressive about the importance of brain health from an early age because they have seen family members and friends suffer from Alzheimer’s and dementia and don’t want their senior years to be the same, Chow said. “In my generation, we weren’t looking ahead and seeing ourselves aging. We are looking at the weekend,” she said. Young people are also more interested in recognizing Alzheimer’s and dementia than past generations who tried to hide relatives with the disease, Chow said. “When I was young, people with dementia or Alzheimer’s were hidden away at home or put in nursing homes and we called them senile,” she said. lan Cross remembers what his first thought was when asked if he would put together an exhibit for the Ontario Science Centre focusing on the connection between science and rock music. “They’re crazy,” said Cross, a Toronto radio personality and content developer for The Science of Rock’n’Roll, a new exhibit set to run through to Oct. 26 at the Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue science centre. The exhibit, which opened to the public June 11, explores how advances in science and technology have revolutionized music, and how it’s made, listened to, experienced and shared starting from 1877 to the present. Cross’ initial thought lasted all of 15 seconds, when he realized the history

of rock music will be told in a way never done before. “It made all the sense in the world,” he told The Mirror during the June 5 media preview. There was no such thing as portable music in the 1950s, as the 8-track player was first introduced in 1965, he said.
“There are so many cool stories that have been forgotten,” Cross said, adding he hasn’t got a clue where music will head in the future. “We are in a transition. We are moving from many decades of possessing music to being able to access music. We no longer need to have the physical
product.” The exhibit features seven areas made up of different interactive components, historical artifacts, informational walls and documentary videos. For an additional $2 on top of admission price, visitors are able to capture video footage of their rock
star moments to share using The Science of Rock’n’Roll backstage pass available online. And of course, a rock’n’roll exhibit wouldn’t be complete without some live rock’n’roll. Juno Award-winning band Arkells performed four songs during the media preview, two of which – ‘Come To Light’ and ‘Never Thought That This Would Happen’ – will be on their third studio album, titled High Noon, set for release Aug. 5. “It’s really a great exhibit,” guitarist Michael DeAngelis told The Mirror while checking out the exhibit with fellow band members. “It’s a hands-on, real exhibit. The more you end up recording music, the more you understand science in sound in general.”

Parkdale is not a “pedophile district.” Deputants who come before city hall committees asking programs be spared are not de-facto communists. A secret cabal of left-wing Toronto councillors have not been wiretapping the councillor from Ward 7. I could go on for an entire column, correcting the fanciful and offensive assertions that have fallen from the lips of Giorgio Mammoliti over the years. But like so much low comedy, it would simply underline the same point: Mammoliti, who is one of the longer-squatting denizens of Toronto council’s lunatic fringe, is pretty creepy. If it weren’t for our cracksmoking mayor doing the heavy lifting, Mammoliti could even be an international embarrassment for this town. Of course, one person’s international embarrassment is another’s local-boymade-good, and Mammoliti’s constituents in northwestern North York have been happy enough with his behaviour

Mammoliti’s remarks and actions are all calculated to stoke an oldeetymee suburban-urban grievance, using as his accelerant a deep social conservatism that frankly mirrors the mayor’s. It’s not surprising, then, that as the municipal election campaign gears up, Mammoliti should choose to wind things up with that business about “pedophile districts.” Parkdale is an interesting and vibrant community these days, but a couple of decades ago it was known as a place marred by crime and drug abuse – much as many people still regard Mammoliti’s own Jane-Finch community. So. Deride a community that’s got a rocky history, and just for good measure throw pedophilia into the mix, and suggest the local councillor is representing their issues over the safety of children. It is classic Mammoliti game
– one that he’s been playing since 1995, when he left a one-term stint on Bob Rae’s NDP backbench at Queen’s Park to join former mayor Mel Lastman’s North York Council, then went to Toronto council as amalgamation took hold. Mammoliti became wellknown mostly in the breach – his lack of discipline when it came to spending his office budgets, his limelight-seeking behaviour, his demagogic mischief-making and his changeable loyalties. Which all, as I may have mentioned earlier, points to one truth: Mammoliti is pretty creepy, and he seems to revel in it; it is a game to him. For the rest of us, it’s a shame. The mayor’s follies aside, when our neighbours speak about the dysfunction and absurdity of Toronto city politics, they are thinking in large part about Mammoliti – amusing himself with verbal pugilism, at the expense of almost everyone else.

Stintz also called on Metrolinx to clarify its position in supporting a threestop subway extension of the Bloor-Danforth line into Scarborough, a move adopted by the former TTC chair and a majority of city council, as part of recent decision that reversed an earlier fully funded plan to replace the aging Scarborough RT with an LRT line. “Right now with the majority government

decision to build a subway instead of an LRT in Scarborough and therefore, we are working closely with the city to make the appropriate amendments to the master agreement,” said Aikins by email. The debate was organized by the group Transport Futures as part of a one-day infrastructure forum that brought together transportation industry professionals, planners and elected officials. Four suspects arrested in connection with armoured car robbery at Fairview Mall Police have made four arrests in connection with an armoured car heist at Fairview Mall. Police allege two armed men wearing

Very seldom do we have somebody that has covered this much territory and this much time without being apprehended.” T h e m o s t re c e n t holdup happened May 5 at a TD bank in the Don Mills Road and Lawrence Avenue area. Earl, of the holdup squad, said the suspect confronted the employees as they unlocked the doors at 7 a.m. He produced a handgun, ordered the employees into the bank and eventually into the vault and stole an undisclosed quantity of cash. The robbery spree began in February 2010 in York Region where the armed suspect would jump over the counters barefaced. “He’s not making any effort to hide his identity whatsoever in the initial stages,” Earl said. “He went on to rob banks in Mississauga and Hamilton in the later part of 2010, committing them in the same style, jumping over the counters armed with a handgun.” In early 2011, the Vaulter Bandit went to Calgary where he held up four banks in 10 days. He then returned to Ontario, holding up banks in York Region
and Ottawa. “The last robbery that we had attributed to the Vaulter Bandit happened in Vaughan on Dec. 14, 2011 and then he remained dormant until this bank robbery occurred on May 5, 2014,” Earl said. “I’m sure that this individual is hiding in plain sight. He’s going to be known to neighbours, brothers, sisters, friends and he’s probably living a normal life other than committing these crimes.” The suspect is white, in his 50s, 5’8” to 5’10” tall with a medium build and grey or saltand-pepper hair. He is athletic and sometimes wears glasses. “He could’ve been a previous track athlete,” Earl said of the suspect. “He’s so fit, he just literally hurdles over top of that counter.” Unlike many bank robbers, police don’t believe this suspect is a drug abuser. “He seems to be utilizing this money probably for everyday living expenses,” Earl said. “We definitely believe this individual is methodical and these robberies are well planned.” The $50,000 reward, posted by the Canadian Bankers Association, is for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the robber. Witnesses have seen him in a small silver car, possibly a Jetta.

Now’s your chance to volunteer for the 2015 Pan Am Games The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games is one year away and interviews are set to start for people interested in volunteering for the event. More than 17,000 people have already applied. There are a variety of jobs available for volunteers including preparing the field of play, taking tickets, ushering spectators to their seats, shuttling athletes and dignitaries to venues and participating in the opening and closing ceremonies. Visitors and media from all over the Americans and the Caribbean will be at the Games and it’s Toronto’s chance to showcase its city. North York resident Richard Bell submitted his application to volunteer with the Pan Am Games. A competitive skier from north Vancouver, he volunteered at the 2010 and the 2014 Olympics by helping groom the alpine ski course. His father was a Olympic swimmer and his mother always encouraged him to volunteer. “I’ve always been a volunteer,” Bell said. “I would love to be a part of the Games right here in Toronto. Volunteering for the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games was an obvious choice for her. “I am very passionate about sports,” she said. “I want to be a part of this event. Domanique Grant said she is excited to be volunteering for the Pan Am Games. She is currently on the TO2015’s youth advisory council and is planning a summit for about 250 youth next April. “I think it’s important for youth to volunteer because they get a chance to learn about themselves and community building,” she said. Fellow downtown resident Vernon Garraway is looking forward to volunteering for the Games. He is originally from St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean, and lived in Vancouver for nine years before moving to Toronto two years ago. Garraway is a former athlete who has been volunteering for 23 years. Scarborough resident Grace Wavryk currently works with the TO2015’s community outreach department at different events including with the TO2015 mascot Pachi. Her family has always been involved in sports and she has helped out at her two daughter’s sporting events over the years. “I can’t just sit back and watch,” she said. “I’m excited about getting involved.”

The TTC is getting set to re-open the intersection of Queen Street East and Leslie Street following the conclusion of major streetcar track construction. The project to build a track to connect the TTC’s new streetcar fleet with the Leslie Barns maintenance and
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT storage facility has resulted in traffic headaches at the intersection for motorists and TTC riders alike. That could soon be ending as the work is scheduled to complete on Saturday. Construction continues in other areas. Following a one week break, the TTC will commence rail replacement work starting June 30 at the intersection of Queen and Broadview Avenue until July 25. WOMAN CLIMBS UNDER TRAIN wSUBWAY
A bizarre event unfolded this week at Chester Station when a distraught woman apparently climbed under a subway train and refused to budge. The incident took place on a busy Monday morning and suspended Bloor-Danforth line service for a short time between Chester and Yonge stations. In a tweet, TTC communications chief Brad Ross said the woman had climbed
under the train and staff cut power to the station. A short time later, Ross tweeted that the woman, who has not been identified, was successfully extricated and receiving help. SPECIAL PRIDE PARADE PASS wTTC
The TTC is offering a special pass for attendees of this year’s Pride Parade as part of Toronto’s hosting of World Pride festivities, a global celebration of LGBTQ communities that starts Friday. For the parade weekend, June 28 to 29, an unlimited pass is available for groups of up to six people with a maximum of four children. There are also individual weekly passes available that are on sale now. The TTC also unveiled last week a plaque commemorating World Pride to be permanently displayed outside Wellesley station.
