Future community meeting to be scheduled The owners of the Toronto Don Valley Hotel and Suites northeast of Eglinton Avenue and the Don Valley Parkway want to convert the hotel to condo towers.

A future community meeting will be set up for residents to learn more about the project before the city deals with the application for the site at 175 Wynford Dr. A date for the community meeting has not yet been determined.

Allied Don Valley Hotel Inc. proposes 671 residential units in two towers of 30 and 34 storeys, which would be joined by a four-storey podium, according to a planning report to North York community council June 18.

There would also be a phased conversion of the sixstorey hotel, which includes a one-storey wing containing a conference centre, to 242 residential units, it said. The proposal would see the con>>>PROPOSAL, page 7

A public meeting will be scheduled in the future so the community can learn more about a proposal to expand the grocery store at the Jane-Finch shopping centre by 1,950 square metres (21,000 square feet).

The proposal calls for the

store, a Price Chopper, at the southwest corner of the mall at the southeast corner of Jane Street and Finch Avenue to be replaced with a larger store, according to a report that went to North York community council on June 18. The new footprint would extend to the west and south of the existing store, the report said. That would reduce the number of parking spaces to 972, down from the existing 1,006. Police are investigating after a quantity of medication was stolen from a drug store.

Police said Oxycodone, Hydromorphone and Lisdexamfetamine were stolen during a break and enter in the Weston Road and Finch Avenue area around 12:40 a.m. on June 14.

The medications could be harmful or fatal if ingested, especially to children.

“For patients with Parkinson’s, knowledge is empowerment and it is crucial for being able to live well with the disease,” Kleiner-Fisman, also an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and medical director of a Baycrest movement disorders clinic, said in a statement.

Keith Goobie, a 55-yearold Parkinson’s patient at the clinic, said the information in the website is helpful. “When you have the correct information about Parkinson’s you can adapt rather than just feeling overwhelmed,” he said in a statement.

Toronto EMS: New grads join ranks Superintendent says common denominator among class a love of people ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

F

irst he played one on TV. Now he’s doing it in real life.

Ryan Richardson was one of 40 paramedic graduates who became new employees of Toronto Emergency Medical Services last week.

The 29-year-old has appeared as a paramedic on several TV series including Flashpoint, Cracked and Warehouse 13.

“I can’t just say I play one on TV,” Richardson said following the graduation ceremony at EMS headquarters in North York.

Richardson, who was born in Etobicoke, has wanted to be a paramedic for as long as he could remember.

“I had the opportunity to visit stations and sit in ambulances when I was younger, visiting my dad at work, and it always gave me a rush,” he said. “My earliest memories have me looking forward to working as a paramedic, and today I’m able to fulfill that.”

Richardson’s dad Bruce has been a paramedic for 37 years and plans to retire by the end of the year.

“Hopefully I get a chance to work with him before he goes,” the new paramedic said about his dad, adding “maybe I can convince him to stick around.”

ambulance service in 1976, the same year CPR was approved for use in the service. “Most people weren’t aware of it. They didn’t know what we were doing.

They were afraid.”

For the most part back then, said Bruce, ambulance attendants kept patients warm, gave them oxygen and drove fast. “No defibrillators, no monitors, not even blood pressure cuffs or stethoscopes,” he said, noting “these days there are medications, intravenous therapies; it’s

more like a mobile hospital.”

Bruce said he’s honoured his son has chosen the same career path.

“I hope he finds it as rewarding as I have,” he said. “It’s one of very few professions where you have instant return on your efforts. You find out right away how successful you’ve been, and it’s very satisfying at the end of the day to know that you’ve been able to help someone.”

class is former trapeze artist Violetta Krantsevich.

Born in Minsk, Belarus, Krantsevich immigrated to Canada with her parents at age 11 in 2011. “I grew up in what I like to call Little Russia: Bathurst and Steeles.”

Krantsevich said her parents thought she needed some extracurricular activities so they enrolled her in circus school where she was trained in trapeze and aerial hoop. “I progressed to freelance circus acts for lots of weddings, corporate

events. Loved the heights, loved the excitement, loved the non-nine-to-five job.”

Now Krantsevich has to give up her love for heights for her passion for paramedicine.

But she says there are similarities in the professions.

“It’s physical, but it’s exciting, and you never know what’s going to happen one minute to the next.”

Krantsevich suggested she may continue to perform trapeze acts as a hobby. “It’s a nice way to de-stress. Flying through the air, nothing is like that.”

The 40 paramedic graduates have diverse backgrounds. They include professional dancer, hydraulics company owner, pet store worker and ski patroller.

Toronto EMS Supt.

Kim McKinnon said the common denominator is a love of people.

City council approved the hiring of 51 paramedics in January.

“These 40 were the first group of paramedics to graduate from that group,” McKinnon said.

The remainder will graduate from the Toronto EMS four-week training and orientation program on July 19, bringing the number of paramedics in the city to 901.

“That’s very exciting.

First increase we’ve had in about 10 years,” McKinnon said. “The increase in our number of calls over the last 10 years has been about 28 per cent.”

Toronto EMS receives nearly 800 calls for service daily.

Man, 19, charged with attempted murder A young man has been charged with attempted murder after a male was stabbed in the chest Saturday near Yonge Street and Elmwood Avenue.

Police said the suspect fled the scene after the 4 p.m. incident but was arrested a short time later.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries.

Timofey Paltsev, 19, of Toronto, has been charged.

Police said a 21-year-old woman was walking in the Bayview Avenue and Burbank Drive area June 16 when a man sexually assaulted her around 11:30 p.m.

The suspect fled on foot.

He’s described as white, 20 to 27 years old, with a medium build and short hair. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, jeans and running shoes.

Dance the night away to some of Ontario’s best big band, swing and jazz acts.

Sunday Serenades starts up again for the season and residents are invited to dance under the stars at Mel Lastman Square, 5120 Yonge St. The Big City Band kicks things off July 7.

This 17-member group was founded in 2008 and perform the extensive repertoire of swing and big band jazz music.

Next up is Priscilla Wright and Her All-Girl Orchestra on July 14, playing the best of the big band music of the 40s, 50s and 60s. This performance includes a rocking tribute medley to Elvis, with whom Priscilla performed several times as a kid.

On July 21 Catch the Philips Westin Orchestra.

With three vocalists – Janine Hogg, Jaclyn Genovese and Erin Fisher – the Philips Westin Orchestra brings their modern, elegant and

Lenny Graf and his Platinum Orchestra perform July 28 with special guest Eddie Graf, Lenny’s father.

The Wyndham Regency Orchestra, a 12-piece big band, comes to the square on Aug. 11.

Finally, Luis Mario Ochoa & the Humber College Latin Big Band, a 22-member (all students) big band will entertain on Aug. 18.

Fringe Festival a Toronto tradition

S

ummer is a great time to be in Toronto.

Across the city, there is a smorgasbord of street festivals, cultural attractions, and other events that make Toronto a popular destination for tourists and offers residents a chance to experience parts of Toronto perhaps previously unknown to them.

Many of these festivals, through the dogged efforts of volunteers, have become strong annual traditions – and sparkplugs for the city’s economy.

One of those traditions is the Toronto Fringe Festival, the city’s largest theatre festival. It has served as a launching pad for theatrical careers, and several productions, including likes of Da Kink in My Hair, our view the have gone on to significant runs theatrical and television forHealthy cities in mats.

This year’s festival, the 25th have healthy annual, is running from July 3 to arts prescence 14. Over those 12 days, there are 148 shows (more than 1,100 total performances) taking place in 35 venues.

But this isn’t just a ‘downtown’ thing, even if most of the festival venues are largely located in or near the downtown core.

When one factors in the contributions of the talented actors, writers, and directors, the Fringe is truly a unique reflection of Toronto’s make-up.

For example, this year, North York’s Dayna Chernoff stars in Soup Can Theatre’s Love is a Poverty You Can Sell 2: Kisses for a Pfennig.

The Fringe is also a vehicle for stories about the city’s neighbourhoods. In 2011, the festival debuted Expect Theatre’s Awake, a production that told a mix of heartbreaking and hopeful stories from north Etobicoke’s Rexdale community. Scarborough rapper Urvah Khan appeared as herself, performing two of her original songs. Awake was shortlisted for a Toronto Arts Foundation award this year.

This city has long had a strong theatre arts community. The continued growth of the Fringe Festival (this year is the biggest yet) suggests it’s getting stronger.

Healthy communities have a healthy artistic component.

There are plenty of ways to get involved. Whether it’s catching a show or volunteering with the Fringe, or considering volunteering your time and talent to one of several local community theatre groups, the opportunities are there.

fter a sluggish start, the Toronto Blue Jays have been the hottest team in major league baseball during the month of June and you can feel the excitement building all over town.

It’s standing-andscreaming-room only on the Jays bandwagon.

Census takers have been working around the clock chronicling the growth in Jays Nation whose numbers are escalating by the second. And the Rogers Centre is sure to be a sellout for the team’s next home game, which is on Canada Day against the mighty Detroit Tigers.

It’s not all fun and games for the fans in Toronto who are discovering the sport for the first time, mind you.

Getting up to speed on the decidedly voluminous vernacular of baseball is one tall order for newbies.

So, in an effort to help ease the understanding of the lingo, here are some of

councillor says Put underground wLRT The province should back up recent comments by the provincial transportation minister and build a new light rail line completely underground, says a Scarborough councillor.

Taking issue with Minister of Transportation Glen Murray’s contention in early June that the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line (LRT) is a subway – since the majority of its planned route runs underground below Eglinton Avenue West – ScarboroughAgincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande said the entire 19-kilometre line should be built below street-level.

At last Tuesday’s meeting of Scarborough Community Council, Del Grande introduced a motion calling for all of the Crosstown, in light of Murray’s remarks, to run underground.

Currently, the line is slated to emerge from a tunnel east of Don Mills Road before continuing at street-level to its eastern terminus at Kennedy station.

The motion was adopted by a majority of the 10-member council.

Officially known as the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance, the group announced last week that 116 politicians – 31 of them from Toronto including Premier Kathleen Wynne – have signed the pledge calling on the province to adopt Metrolinx’s recent recommendations for new taxes and user fees.

TTC service along Kingston Road between Victoria Park Avenue and Queen Street has been altered for streetcar track reconstruction.

The work is expected to continue until the first week of August. A number of changes are required to TTC service in the area to accommodate the construction including the 502 Downtowner and 503 Kingston Road streetcar routes ending at Queen Street East and Kingston Road; and no westbound bus service on Kingston between Victoria Park and Queen Street East.

Ford attends Pride flag-raising David Nickle dnickle@insidetoronto.com For the first time since he was elected in 2010, Mayor Rob Ford attended the Toronto Pride flag raising ceremony.

Ford’s attendance at the Monday event at Toronto City Hall was shared with another first: Ontario’s first openly lesbian premier, Kathleen Wynne sat in a VIP seat as the flag raising ceremony took place.

Ford had been unwilling to attend any official Pride Week events since he was elected,

including the Pride Parade which coincides with the Canada Day weekend.

Ford has always maintained he preferred to spend the weekend at his family cottage in Muskoka, but offered no explanation as to why he didn’t attend other Pride events.

On Monday, he arrived accompanied by City Hall security guards to applause — and some catcalling — and read a statement proclaiming Pride Week.

When the ceremony was

over, he left without responding to questions from the media.

His brother, Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford, said Mayor Ford’s appearance at the event was a sign he was evolving as a mayor.

“I think you’ve seen Rob from Day One to the time he’s going into the election four years in, I think he’s evolved as the mayor,” said Councillor Ford.

“Like Rob’s always said: he’s the mayor of the people – all the people.”

A QUESTION OF TIMING Traffic signal retiming is taking place across the city, including several parts of North York, well into 2016. While city studies show success in reducing travel delays in other areas, the method won’t help the city’s most congested intersection at Bayview and Sheppard FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

he city is driving ahead with plans to retime traffic lights in an effort to improve vehicular flow, with Lawrence Avenue in North York set for completion this year.

More than 1,000 of the city’s traffic signals will be retimed starting this year and ending in 2016 along some of the busiest corridors.

But retiming of lights will do little to help the Bayview and Sheppard avenues area, as the intersection is too congested for the undertaking to be of any benefit, said Rajnath Bissessar, manager of urban traffic control systems for the city’s transportation services.

“It wouldn’t help much,” he said.

Bissessar cited the close proximity to Hwy. 401 as the culprit, noting cars form a constant queue to get onto the highway and therefore retiming wouldn’t be of any service.

“We can’t improve capacity of the intersection,” he said. “We would need to put an extra lane in.”

According to the city’s transportation services, traffic congestion occurs

when the traffic flow rate on a particular approach to an intersection exceeds that approach’s capacity. Once the flow rate of arrival vehicles exceeds the capacity, the number of vehicles arriving would be greater than the number departing on the other side of the intersection. Then a vehicle queue would form upstream of the intersection, which is what would occur at Bayview and Sheppard avenues.

At most major intersections, the total demand exceeds the capacity in the peak periods. As a result, queuing and delays will occur and motorists must consider whether they should change their mode of transportation, time of travel or travel route in order to avoid the delay, transportation services said.

While road widening could help ease congestion, the city’s focus is on car pooling, cycling, rideshare, HOV lanes and public transit.

The fact traffic light retiming won’t help the congestion at Bayview and Sheppard didn’t surprise Jan Siegel.

“The only way to stop an increase in cars is to stop building condominiums in the area,” said the vice-

president of the Bayview Village Association.

“Adding a lane is great, maybe it will help a bit, but it won’t help if you don’t minimize the number of units. There is not one variable. The city is not looking at the whole picture.”

The retiming will be done on the city’s busiest roads – those that carry more than 20,000 vehicles a day and more than 5,000 bus passengers a day. Other criteria for roads to receive the signal timing adjustment include roads that are alternatives for expressways, major routes to and from the downtown core, and routes used as alternatives during major construction projects, transportation services said.

This year, the city plans to retime about 270 signals along Victoria Park Avenue, Kingston Road, Weston Road, Keele Street, Parkside Drive, Lawrence Avenue East and Lawrence Avenue West.

In 2012, the city completed signal retiming studies on 110 signals along Bloor Street, Kennedy Road, Adelaide Street and Richmond Street. Studies showed that delays to motorists along these routes were reduced by between 14 and 33 per cent, according to information

The committee has before it a request by St. Paul’s Councillor Josh Matlow to find a way of “mitigating the negative impacts of urban wildlife.”

Matlow wants to see a report coming back by February, finding out how the city monitors urban wildlife and how the city might reduce their impact on Torontonians. The committee meets Thursday.

underground pipes, sewers and catch-basins are decades old. Improvements alone cannot completely protect family homes from basement flooding. Unforeseen or accidental problems can occur in any type of city sewer system.

Autumn rains, sudden winter and spring thaws often overload even the best kept city sewer systems and the backflow can be a flood disaster waiting to happen in residential areas.

“We see the devastation and disruption that take place in people’s lives when sewers back up. It is absolutely crucial that the installation of this simple device be carried out by a professional, licensed plumbing company, otherwise manufacturer warranties are voided,” states Derek Moreland, President, Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Toronto. “The backwater check valve isolates the plumbing, on the inside of the home, from the city’s sewer system to help reduce the risk of flooding. Some munici-

palities will actually provide homeowners a financial grant/subsidy of up to $3,200 per property, to help protect their home and family from danger of flood.”
