Other kids may be lounging around on March Break, but students from North York’s Crestwood Preparatory College are spending part of their vacation participating in a “first-ofits-kind” cross-Canada social media initiative. Called the Twitter Book Club, the project will see Crestwood students join with students from Barrie, Ontario, Lloydminster, Alberta, Warren, Manitoba and Gander, Newfoundland. The grades 10, 11 and 12 students will read a book called Survival Kit, written by North York Holocaust survivor Zuzana Sermer, and, along the way, tweet their thoughts and observations as part of a realtime conversation. Teachers can pose questions for students to ponder and tweet about as they read and can follow the students’ comments. “I told them it’s like doing a book report one tweet at a time,” said Scott Masters, the head of social studies at Crestwood, near York Mills Road and the Don Valley Parkway. >>>PROJECT, page 9

‘St. John’s was my lifesaver,’ woman says of recovery Former patient to walk in Sunday’s fundraiser for rehab facility LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com
M
ore than seven years after St. John’s Rehab Hospital helped April Eisses rebuild her life following a car accident that left her with life-changing injuries, she will take part in Sunday’s fundraiser for the North York rehabilitation facility. “I’m very excited. I’m doing this for the people (patients) who come after me,” said Eisses, who is participating for the first time in the hospital’s annual five-kilometre run/ walk. “I shudder at the thought of (what my life would be like without the care I received at St. John’s). My life would be completely different.” Car accident On Aug. 9, 2005, Eisses was travelling on Hwy. 400 in Barrie when she was hit by a driver going the wrong way. The other driver was killed. Eisses’s seven-monthold son, Owen, received a minor injury when the collision caused him to bite his lip. Eisses wasn’t as lucky. Dazed following the accident, she remembers wondering why there was a shark’s tooth resting on the dashboard beside her. She later learned it was a piece of her elbow. Emergency crews used the jaws of life to extricate Eisses from her car and she was airlifted to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

Downsview Park president, other senior executives let go Downsview Park president Bill Bryck and other senior executives have been dismissed, The Mirror has learned. In addition to Bryck, senior vice-president of operations, Robert Singleton, and “at least three others in senior-ish positions” were let go Tuesday, March 5, former board chairperson David Soknacki said. Bryck could not be reached for comment. He earned $141,600 to $166,600 a year as part of a three-year contract that began Aug. 9, 2010, according to a document of the federal government’s Privy Council. The latest move has left the community wondering what’s next in store for the park four months after it was handed over to Canada Lands Company. The agency’s mandate is to redevelop or sell surplus federal government properties, although the organization continues to review the future of Downsview Park. “We don’t know their motive (in letting the executives go),” said Albert Krivickas, vice-
president of the Downsview Lands Community Voice Association. “It’s a shame what’s going on there. You want some continuity, some history. There were good people there.” Soknacki and the rest of the board were not re-appointed to their positions last year in advance of Canada Lands taking over Downsview Park. “I’m so incredibly pleased and grateful we opened the park (last June),” Soknacki said. David Anselmi, senior-vice president of development and sustainability with Downsview Park, confirmed senior executives were dismissed. The move does not signify a change in direction for operation of the park, he said. Rather, it is a change in the governance structure, he said. He referred further questions to Manon Lapensee, Canada Lands’ director of communications. She could not be reached for comment. –Lisa Queen

St. Dennis Drive meeting scheduled for Tuesday Residents will have their chance to weigh in on plans to tame car traffic along a dangerous Flemingdon Park roadway next week. The city wants to reduce speeds along St. Dennis Drive, which provides a southwest connection from Eglinton Avenue to Don Mills Road. It is proposing the removal of two lanes and replacing them with bike lanes and on-street parking. Also under proposal is the installation of dedicated left turn lanes along St. Dennis, including Deauville Lane, which is one of the 10 most dangerous crossing points for pedestrians, according to the city. A meeting to discuss the proposal is scheduled for

A
n event taking place next week hopes to ‘raise’ not money but volunteer hours for local nonprofit organizations. Heading into its 10th anniversary event on March 22, Timeraiser began as a unique idea started by university graduates who wanted to help out in some way but had little disposable income to do so. The concept is simple: instead of bidding money to organizations, guests could bid time and would be rewarded after meeting their volunteer obligations with art from local artists. Non-profit organizations participating in the event from across the city include Delisle Youth Services, McDonald House, and the our view Ronald Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research. The goal is to bring in There’s a 10,000 volunteer hours for the participating non-profits and return on this 30 invest $23,000 in the careers of artists. investment But this is just one event. Volunteer opportunities exist year-round in your neighbourhood. Connect with local organizations that require more than just funds to operate successfully. Groups like North York Harvest Food Bank, have programs that run year-round and they all value the currency of time. Or take the initiative like the Timeraiser organizers did and find an issue to invest your time in – whether it’s starting up a community beautification project or organizing neighbourhood walks. Attend community council or school council meeting and champion a cause that needs a leader to rally fellow residents and families to accomplish a goal together. The return investment is a tighter-knit community that also yields such benefits as improved neighbourhood safety and increased community engagement from youths to seniors. Non-profit organizations seeking volunteers can also get the word out by visiting www.northyorkmirror. com and submitting a listing online for the community calendar, which will automatically be considered for the print edition. What about a lottery for transit? To the editor: Re: ‘Smarter commuting could save TTC money,’ Special Report, Feb. 28. I have enjoyed all the articles on transit. I have one suggestion for funding that I haven’t heard anyone talk about before. In order to help fund the development of the initial infrastructure and construction, why not develop a special lottery. If there is money to win, then people will buy tickets. It might be a good way to raise some funds instead of always relying on raising taxes, fees and road tolls. I also support the Toronto casino bid as another way to fund transit, but I do not have faith that our shortsighted council will vote for it. They are too worried amount a slight increase in gambling addiction that will be so insignificant in the overall scheme of things. Rick Jackson
Transit forums: more locations a great idea To the editor: Re: ‘Planning better roundtables,’ Editorial, March 5. Your suggestions for more locations for public forums are a great idea. But so far the city’s initiative by the planning committee ‘feeling congested’ has given the public short or no notice at all of the few
meetings they held. It appears they really don’t want to consult the public, but only make it look like they do. Most of the meetings listed on their website now were for February. Instead of ‘feeling congested’ it sounds more like feeling constipated. And all the proposed meetings by ‘feeling con-
gested’ and Metrolinx were designed for only one purpose - how to raise more money for the kind of transportation we don’t want: badly planned, overpriced LRTs that will increase gridlock instead of reducing it. And Metrolinx and the TTC are not listening. Karl Haab
Toronto’s outer edges have sunk in status To the editor: Re: ‘Planning better roundtables,’ Editorial, March 5. I thought your comments in your editorial were absolutely spot on. Unfortunately, it is only the people who live in the ‘burbs’ who truly understand your point of view. We who choose not to live in the inner city have sunk to a perceived secondclass status ever since that ridiculous concept of amalgamation was forced on Metropolitan Toronto’s
residents by the former premier Mike Harris Tories. They allowed this hijacking of responsible civic government to take place when they backed the move to centralize power at Toronto’s city hall. It certainly didn’t mean the old city of Toronto’s system of civic governing was deserving of such largess. It was and still is the realm of special interest groups and entrenched ruling cliques. I found the leadership of the other ‘cities’ actually
listened to their residents, were successful and able to balance their budgets because the various components worked together. So now the rest of us have to go cap-in-hand to the Emerald City, but only during business hours, if we wish to become part of the ‘democratic’ process. Our voices may be heard, but I doubt that they are listened to by those who allegedly make their decisions based on the ‘greater good’. Chris Belfontaine

Don’t bet on quick casino debate

s we all struggle to pull our minds from the gutter of (alleged) sleaze, bad behaviour and public lewdness that emerged last week at and around city hall, it’s worth remembering Toronto Council has a major policy debate on its plate this spring: whether or not to host a casino. Right now, the debate is alleged, too. It was to have occurred in the coming weeks, once staff delivered a final report to the executive committee and then to council. It will be a bit later than that, we learned Friday; the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has been slow in providing the necessary information to make a rational decision on the matter. The best current information we have on the benefits of a casino comes in the form of a hard-sell pitch from MGM Resorts International and Cadillac Fairview to turn much of Exhibition Place into a giant
david nickle the city resort and gambling complex. The casino would bring 10,000 jobs, they say – good paying jobs with an average income of $60,000. It would revitalize the city’s waterfront around Exhibition Place and Ontario Place with new foot bridges, and spur massive transit improvements to and from the site. And on the subject of admission to what is left of the Canadian National Exhibition ... the casino would have it covered, for the next 10 years and maybe even longer. Of course, none of that’s set in stone, or even in a remotely binding document. Like all the best pitches, the MGM-Cadillac Fairview proposition gives plenty of impetus for an irrational decision. Right now, the rationalism is all on the “no” side.
The city’s medical officer of health has weighed in with a report indicating the adverse effects of a casino on gambling addicts would outweigh any benefits in terms of employment and economic stimulus. Developers in the downtown have joined small businesses there in arguing a casino is the last thing the city needs from an economic stimulus point of view. And that report from staff hanging in the air still hasn’t been able to pin down what kind of annual hosting fee Toronto might expect. Whenever that report comes out, there will be the question facing council: is a certain amount of suffering among a demographic of addicts and their families worth it, for an annual boost to the city’s coffers? It’s a moral question, and fundamentally an ugly one. Answer it badly, and that gutter beckons.

Survival Kit is Sermer’s moving autobiography of survival in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and Hungary during the Second World War and the daring and innovative strategies she and her fiance, and future husband, Arthur Sermer used to live through the horror. “A few miracles and a little bit of luck,” is how Masters describes the Sermers’ ability to survive. Enter an egg-decorating contest online to win iPad mini, weekly prizes Decorate an egg and help fill empty tummies. To celebrate Easter and one of Ontario families’ favourite holiday pastimes – egg decorating - the Egg Farmers of Ontario (EFO) announced the launch of The Eggs Factor contest. The Eggs Factor, an online egg-decorating contest, provides Ontarians with the opportunity to design their own egg-Picasso or Rembrandt. Running until April 2, The Eggs Factor contest is divided into six age categories: zero to five, six to 12, 13 to 18, 19 to
29 and 30 to 59 and 60-plus. A panel of eggs-perts – Ontario egg farmers – will shortlist each category to six entries. The chosen entries will then be posted on eggsfactor.ca, where Canadians will have the chance to cast their votes from April 4 to 14. The Top 2 winners of each age category will be awarded an iPad mini. Egg artists will also have the chance to win weekly prizes. In addition, for each contest entry, EFO will donate a dozen eggs to Breakfast Clubs of Canada. “The Eggs Factor is a cre-
ative activity for all ages,” said Abby Bagwell, gift and partner development advisor with Breakfast Clubs of Canada in a release. “It provides a great opportunity for us to partner with Egg Farmers of Ontario and fulfill our mission of feeding children’s futures and raising awareness of the importance of breakfast for kids.” Eggsfactor.ca also offers downloadable colouring pages. Visit www.eggsfactor.ca for details and to enter. The winning eggs will be announced April 17
