North York councillors expressed sadness over the passing of former mayor Rob Ford, who died Tuesday, March 22, after an 18-month battle with an aggressive form of cancer. The controversial politician was 46. “My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all the friends,” said York Centre Councillor James Pasternak. “It’s obviously sad when you lose someone so young and with a young family. I knew him not only as a council colleague, but someone who cleared off his whole schedule to come to my father’s funeral. Despite political differences, it’s a sad day for his family and for City Hall.” Ford was first elected as an Etobicoke councillor in 2000 and successfully ran for mayor in 2010. He was forced to drop out of the 2014 mayoral race after he was diagnosed with pleomorphic liposarcoma after a tumour was found in his abdomen. Ford then ran for his former council seat instead. He underwent a 10-hour surgery to remove the tumour

last May, but new tumours on his bladder were discovered in October. Ford had been at Mount Sinai Hospital taking part in a clinical trial involving an innovative method using mice, implanting them sam tumour to help oncologists identify the best course of treatment for a patient by testing different drugs.
