Like the name suggests, participants can stroll, walk, roll on roller blades or wheelchairs, run or jog in an effort to match and exceed the $28,000 raised from last year’s event. Routes range from a one-kilometre Supporters Scenic Stroll or Roll, to a 10-km Champions Challenge Run, and a four-km Corporate and Community Relay. Registration is free, but participants are encouraged

The doors to 15 San Romanoway, which housed the Youth’n’Charge and Palisades Media Arts Academy (PMAA) programs
at the northeast corner of Jane Street and Finch Avenue, were locked April 30, much to the surprise of Nathan Baya and Kristov Gayle. “We love the studio,” Baya said. “To us (the closing) hurts.” The teens organized a rally earlier this month outside 15 San Romanoway to bring attention to the closure and to gather signatures for a petition concerning the shut-down. Excitement over World Cup builds
T
he World Cup soccer championship officially kicks off June 12 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a game between the host country and Croatia, but the excitement in Toronto is already starting to build. Short of being in Brazil, Toronto has to be the best place in the world for soccer fans to watch the World Cup. Most residents are already very familiar with how our city gets all dressed up and celebrates World Cup. Beyond the flags waving from cars, there are vendors selling hats, shirts and flags, and fans gathering in locations across Toronto to catch the action. Everybody will be talking soccer between June 12 and July 13, when the tourney wraps up with the championship game in Rio. There are 32 teams taking part in the World Cup and Toronto has significant our view demographic links to many of those teams. For instance, the Italian, Greek, Portuguese, German, English, French and Dutch diasporas are large and well established throughout the city. We’re all familiar with scenes of flag-waving fans filling the streets and celebrating after their teams win. Parts of Little Italy, Little Portugal, Corso Italia, and Greektown on the Danforth are seas of celebrating fans after wins by their teams. What’s especially interesting and makes the World Cup in our city so much fun is the mixing of fan bases, and how the Brazilian fans will watch and celebrate in Little Portugal, and parts of Corso Italia along St. Clair West have also become home-base for many fans with links to South American teams other than Brazil. North York has a strong centre of fans of African teams, and is also where Iranian fans gather. It’s all a part of what makes Toronto great. Nothing like a sunny day at the ball park
D
ear Sun, I just wanted to drop you a quick line to let you know happy everyone is to see you’re back, and also to show you something I think you’ll find very interesting. Cast your gaze across the lake next to the CN Tower and over to the retractable roof that is open at the Rogers Centre. When I say open, I mean wiiiiide open and it’s all because of you. Now look straight down. You see the boys in blue and white warming up on the carpet beneath? Well, hold on to your Jays cap hotshot, the lads – wait for it – are in first place in their division. I’m not kidding. And get this, they didn’t have to switch divisions to get to the top either. They’re still in the vaunted American League East. That means the Jays are leading the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, et al, and get this, they swept the Red Sox last week.
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Three out of three games. In Fenway Park, no less. The thing is, the way they’ve been playing, it wasn’t even that surprising. They gave Texas all they could handle before heading to Boston and then swept league-leading Oakland right after coming home from Fenway. They’ve been a handful for just everybody lately. What’s more, there’s eye-catching stuff happening with regularity up and down the Jays lineup. It could be a pivotal home run blast, a dazzling play in the field, a critical stolen base, an inning-ending strikeout, a game-saving catch at the wall, a runner thrown out at the plate – you name it. Sluggers Jose Bautista, Melky Cabrera and Edwin Encarnacion aren’t just smacking the ball around,
they’re crushing it. Speedy Jose Reyes is scampering around the basepaths like a one-man track meet. Veteran pitcher Mark Buerhle is mowing just about everybody down; ace reliever Casey Janssen is closing games with the best of them; and with depth on the bench, manager John Gibbons finally has the proper tools to do his thing, too. On top of all that, every time the club wins these days it seems there’s a story in the newspaper the next day about how the kind of streak they’re on hasn’t happened in like a gazillion years. It’s wild, I tell ya. Now, admittedly, it’s only May and things can change in a heartbeat in this game. Still, there’s definitely something going on here we haven’t seen since – ahem – those World Series days of yore. So, that’s it. I just wanted to get you up to speed on
what’s been happening since you’ve been away and to officially welcome you back. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m about to step inside the dome for today’s tilt. We’ll talk soon. When we do, just don’t ask me to try and explain how R.A. Dickey’s knuckle ball works. Anyhow, look for me in the nosebleed section right after the seventh inning stretch. I have a treat in store. It’s going to appear like I’m raising my arms to start a gigantic wave through the ballpark, which I hope indeed ensues, but in reality I’ll be raising them to salute you and thank you. oronto soccer fans are getting ready to wave their flags next month when the World Cup of soccer begins in Brazil. Being one the of most diverse cities in the world means that when the World Cup takes place every four years, there is no shortage of fans cheering for the 32 teams taking part in the tournament. And this year will be no exception. The World Cup kicks off on June 12 with a game between host Brazil and Croatia in Sao Paulo. Scarborough’s Josie Tanga is of Italian descent and she is already looking forward to this year’s World Cup, in which Italy will be making its 14th straight appearance. “It’s great,” said Tanga of the World Cup and its importance to Toronto’s huge Italian-Canadian population.

That win led to thousands of fans pouring onto Danforth Avenue, waving Greek flags and celebrating for hours. It also established Greektown on the Danforth, between Chester and Jones avenues, as the epicentre for Toronto’s Greek soccer fans during major tournaments such as the Euro and the World Cup. REALISTIC OUTLOOK
FIERCE SUPPORT “We have a huge fan base, and we love our Italian team. We support them no matter what.” Tanga said family and friends often gather at her home to watch the games when Italy is playing. “We have family and friends over and we get all dressed up for the game; wearing the bracelets and the hats,” she said. “Everyone gets very excited.” Of course, food is a big part of the celebration when it comes to watching the World Cup for Toronto’s fans supporting the countries taking part. “We make rice balls and pizza,” said Tanga. After enjoying the game in the relative calm of the home environment, Tanga said heading out to celebrate on Corso Italia, in the St. Clair and Lansdowne area, is also usually on the agenda providing Italy wins the match.

As for picking a winner this year, Tanga likes Italy. No surprise given her heritage and the fact Italy has won the World Cup four times; second only to Brazil’s five World Cup championships. “The Italians,
who else,” she said when asked to predict this year’s champ. “My kids might have a different opinion, though. (Cristiano) Ronaldo is a great player; maybe Portugal. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Italy, though.” For Sam Kouzoukas, the participation of Greece in this year’s World Cup makes him proud of the team he supports. “Historically, we’ve done better in the Euro (the European soccer championships)
Kouzoukas is proud that Greece is making its second-straight World Cup appearance, but is realistic about his team’s chances of winning it all. “It’s a great accomplishment that Greece made it,” he said. He pointed out that Greek fans did not have a lot to cheer about in the 2010 World Cup during which their team went winless in their three preliminary round games, and were eliminated. However, Greece did advance to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Euro. Given his background of playing soccer and his Greek heritage, Kouzoukas said he finds it interesting how everyone in Toronto becomes a soccer expert once the World Cup begins. “When the World Cup comes, everyone is watching and everyone has an opinion. The city has launched a smartphone app tracking cyclist movement. The Toronto Cycling App logs, with the user’s permission, a typical bike trip and sends that data to the city for analysis. City planners will use the information provided, including the trip route, date, length and the purpose of the trip, to incorporate in a new bike plan scheduled for completion in 2015. ‘Stars of David’ a candid celebration of Jewish identity
T
he history of the musical theatre is best told through the stories of the collaborations that resulted in some great shows. Usually the teams were writers such as Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, as well as Comden & Green. Another blending was composer Stephen Sondheim with director Harold Prince. In 1981 they created a musical, Merrily We Roll Along, that told a cautionary tale of a fictional pair of Broadway songwriters whose success eventually destroys their friendship. The story was told in reverse, and critics and audiences rejected it after just 16 performances. The youthful cast introduced a number of future stars, including Jason Alexander, and budding writer Abby Pogrebin who portrayed the wife of one of the songwriters. More recently, as Abigail Pogrebin, she has produced segments for TV’s 60 Minutes. Her 2007 best-seller Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk About Being Jewish presented candid interviews with 62 well-known Jewish performers, writers, and personalities. The book inspired Aaron Harrick to create a musical revue written by a collective of some of today’s leading musical theatre writers. Another collaboration – one between local theatre companies Angelwalk Theater and the Harold

of TV’s All in the Family introduces Darren Barker as the show’s creator, Norman Lear, explaining the rules of The Book of Norman, and Will Lamond serves up a delicious portrait of playwright Tony Kushner recalling some “horrible Seders.” Marc Camilleri’s fourpiece band is positioned at the back of the theater in the balcony to provide accompaniment that never overshadows the singers. Every word is crystal clear. The intent of the piece is to celebrate Jewish identity in an entertaining way. It achieves its goal smoothly and deftly. John Tory’s transit proposal is compelling and speculative
O
h, John Tory is a coy one. All this time when the mayoral candidate was talking about building a “Yonge Street Relief Line,” we assumed that he was simply renaming the Downtown Relief Line – and that his promise to start building the thing right away, at the same time as the city and province built a subway to Scarborough, was pie-in-the-sky. Well, it turns out the reason Tory didn’t call his secret transit plan the downtown relief line was he doesn’t intend to build the downtown relief subway line any time soon. His Yonge Street Relief line is something else: a 52-kilometre, 22-stop SmartTrack line, using GO Transit rail lines for an above-ground subway that will stretch from the western reaches of Etobicoke to the middle of Scarborough, and dip south to Union Station touching Main Station in the east and Dundas West station in the west. It will cost $8 billion divided between three levels of government, and the city will pay for its portion using Tax Increment Financing, the same system of borrowing against future property assessment increases that Gordon Chong advocated when Mayor Rob Ford hired him to come up with a funding plan for his failed subway proposal on Sheppard Avenue. The idea itself is a refinement and expansion of a proposal that failed 2010 mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi proposed – to use GO lines as an interim downtown relief line. And it is a compelling idea. It provides rapid commuter transit to places that are pretty far off, and gives commuters from the edge of the subway system an alter-
david nickle the city native to clogging up the Bloor-Yonge interchange as they head to work downtown. It is also, in the context of this election, a too-cute game of rope-adope: an attempt to get his opponents to spend their energy attacking and questioning a suspected plan that is nothing like the real plan. For a short time after its revelation, it forces Tory’s opponents to basically call him on his semantics. It also, however, allows his opponents to accuse him of hiding a flip-flop behind semantics. Earlier in the campaign, Tory did make it clear that a downtown relief subway line was essential, and sharply criticized Chow and Ford for not embracing it as a number-one priority. And while it is true that the new plan sidesteps some of the logistical problems of getting a downtown relief subway going right away, it raises other problems. To begin with, the TIF model of financing is another semantic trick: it is debt by another name, and with the billiondollar Scarborough subway plan, Toronto will have nearly reached its debt ceiling. And like Chow’s downtown relief plan, Tory’s surface rail plan relies on a massive federal and provincial buy-in to go ahead, and in that sense, is just as speculative. The plan also doesn’t obviate the need for the TTC’s downtown relief line – the city has to find the money for that too. And as Tory himself pointed out not too long ago, that needs to come sooner rather than later.

Caribbean Carnival gearing up for three weeks of pageantry FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com The Ontario Science Centre was a rainbow of colour when costumed mas models took to the stage for the media launch of the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival last Thursday. The three-week-long summer cultural festival of Caribbean music, cuisine, visual and performing arts will get underway with a public launch July 8 at Nathan Phillips Square at noon and will wrap up Aug. 3. There are some changes to this year’s festival,
most noteworthy moving the Junior Parade from Downsview Park in North York to Malvern in Scarborough. The change was made due to construction at the Keele Street and Sheppard Avenue park, said Christopher Alexander, chief administration officer with the festival management committee. The Junior Parade was held at Jane Street and Finch Avenue before moving to Downsview Park two years ago, but there were difficulties getting participants to come out, he said, adding the decision was made to
bring it back to Malvern where it was held years ago. “The Malvern community has been really welcoming,” Alexander said. There was loud applause when it was mentioned during the media launch of the Junior Parade move to Malvern. The Junior Parade will take place Saturday, July 19 at 11 a.m. starting at Malvern Community Centre. The Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue science centre will present the Ontario Science Centre Award for Innovation in Mas for the most innovative carnival costume at the King

and Queen competition and show July 31. The award will focus on the intricate art and scientific merit of costume design by honouring the engineers of the pieces. The Grand Parade, the highlight of the festival, will stretch 3.5 kilometres from Exhibition Place along Lake Shore Boulevard Aug. 2. “One of our goals is to show people science is everywhere, and it’s most certainly found at carnival with food, music, instruments and costumes,” said Lesley Lewis, CEO of the science centre. “We understand and celebrate traditions that make up this vibrant city.” Eglinton-Lawrence MP and Minister of Finance Joe Oliver called the festival the “pride and joy” of Toronto, adding Carnival helps Canada balance the budget by bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars to the city.

North York’s Metro Wildcats take two out of three over weekend The Metro Toronto Wildcats opened their Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) season on the road Saturday, winning two of three games against Ottawa-based Cumberland Panthers. ■ Increasing the minimum wage to $11 per hour and then further based on inflation would help many newcomers. Since 2003, our government has increased the minimum wage by 60 per cent from $6.85 to one of Canada’s highest minimum wages at $11. We must increase the hourly wage for personal support workers to $16.50/hour. This raise was included as part of our 2014 budget, and will raise the minimum wage for 34,000 publicly paid workers.
■ We have already invested over $16 billion in building the Eglinton Crosstown Line, extending the York-University line up to the centre of Vaughan and the new air-rail link train between Union Station and Pearson Airport. We also budgeted for an additional $15 billion in improving public transit across the Toronto area.
■ Before entering politics I was a history teacher at St. Michael’s College School. I was then elected as a Metro Toronto councillor; commissioner and chair of the TTC from 1988 to 1994. As an MPP, I have worked to build vibrant main streets and great local schools through Shop Local campaigns and a $275-million investment in full-day kindergarten. I have also headed the charge to save the historic postal station “K” and protect Bannockburn Park.
■ I propose to initiate a conversation between tenants, owners, developers and the government about quality of infrastructure, responsibilities, ways to settle disputes outside of court, existing regulations that are unnecessary, and non-existing regulations that are necessary. I propose to implement creative solutions to make daycare more accessible, more affordable and more reliable. I propose to keep schools open after hours for not-for-profit groups. I propose to be a voice for immigrants.
■ I would help not-for-profit groups offering activities like sport and recreation, arts and culture, English classes, cultural skills and similar available to immigrants in their own language. I would similarly support mentoring programs, networking groups and the diffusion of tool kits to help companies better integrate skilled immigrants into their workplaces, like what Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council proposes. I would organize community forums where immigrants can voice their concerns.
■ I would engage all stakeholders to start a global discussion about transit. We need to take transit out of the partisan battleground and solve this problem in a Canadian fashion: reasonable, respectful and democratic. I would propose to lawmakers in all level of government not to cancel anymore existing transit initiative of whatever nature. I would invite transit experts and new Torontonians from other cities to community forums about transit to provide a different angle.
■ I came to Canada from France in 2007. A former engineer and patent attorney, I now work as a bilingual actor, a cultural entrepreneur and a community organizer. In addition, I am actively involved in promoting French language and culture in Toronto and helping Francophone immigrants understand Canadian culture, way of working and way of life. I’ve lobbied for the creation of the French Language Advisory Subcommittee and created the Forums CFVT. org
■ I want to focus most of all on helping people reach their full potential. Whether it is a child with autism, a new immigrant who has skills and wants to work, a business trying to create jobs but caught up in red tape, I want to work locally to find solutions that will allow people and businesses to thrive here in EglintonLawrence.
■ The best thing we can do to ensure a smooth transition is to help new immigrants find jobs. We need to break down barriers that prevent people from using their skills and working in their areas of expertise. I will work along with a PC government to break down artificial barriers to credentialing, and utilize the Provincial Nominee Program, to match immigration to the jobs we need in the community.
■ We absolutely must build the relief subway line. This is a critical subway line that will relieve congestion across North York and in particular on the Yonge subway by giving people more options to get downtown. This is the most important thing we can do to create some breathing room for commuters. This is the number one transit priority for me and for the PC Party.
■ Robin Martin practiced as a trial lawyer, and then worked in government as a senior policy advisor where she developed her expertise in health policy. Robin later worked as a public policy consultant, developing substantive expertise in the area of energy policy. Robin was instrumental, working with health organizations, in getting a universal cancer screening program adopted by the Ontario government – the first of its kind in Canada.
■ I understand the value new immigrants place in drop-in centres, where they can obtain advice and support during this very challenging time in their lives. I would review the resources of this kind that are available for new immigrants in the Eglinton-Lawrence riding to see how they can be improved.
■ As MPP, I would promote continued investment in transit systems and work to build on the benefit that will come to our riding from the Eglinton Crosstown line. Improving transit, however, will require investment. We must have the courage to say we are willing to pay for what we need. I, along with other Green MPPs, will demand that Ontario establish a dedicated fund to build new transit and support the operation of existing transit.
■ Lucas McCann is a small business owner and director of communications of the Management Consultant Association at York University. Through his doctoral work in organic chemistry, Lucas came to realize the importance of science-based policy development and how these affect environmental issues important for Ontarians. Lucas is also an artist and is deeply rooted in the fine arts community in the Greater Toronto Area.

■ I would make sure that the Eglinton Crosstown line is completed – not cancelled as it was once before. Ensuring that Bannockburn Park remains a green space is also another important issue. I have been working in partnership with the community to assure that the severance and sell-off of Bannockburn Park does not take place. It is a space that is heavily used by the community in an area where there is a deficit of parkland.

■ Eglinton-Lawrence is a riding of older, mature homes where energy efficiency can be an issue. I believe it makes sense to help people save money by saving energy, through making their homes more energy efficient. We have huge untapped potential to save energy. New York State has similar geography and climate to Ontario, yet our energy consumption per person is 50 per cent higher. Clearly, we have opportunity to reduce demand.

What will you do to improve transit for your constituents?
■ I’ll ensure sufficient funds be provided to ESL training programs as well as skill development programs so that immigrants will be able to integrate into the society and economy of York Centre. In addition, I’ll implement a standardization regime that will recognize professional licences and degrees obtained in foreign countries (i.e. medical licences and law degrees). This way, experienced professionals will be able to work in Canada as they did in their country of origin.
■ Ontario is currently $296 billion in debt; meaning every individual in the province owes approximately $22,000. Investing in transit is important, but first we must reform the current financial system that operates based on the flawed infinite growth paradigm. If this system remains unchanged Ontario will experience a catastrophic bankruptcy or austerity measures associated with an IMF bailout package.
■ The socio-economic condition of York Centre is in complete disarray and I’ll do everything within my power to revive it. Unfortunately, political solutions are often unachievable as politicians continue to put the needs of their political party above the needs of their constituency. I’ll work on behalf of the people of York Centre and my responsibility to the people will always outweigh and override political obligations because ultimately my loyalty belongs to York Centre constituents.
■ Unemployment and underemployment are the top issues. The NDP (and I) would work to have the province make the necessary investments (for example, rewarding private-sector job creators), to keep people (indirectly including people in the public sector) working. These investments would be paid for by restoring corporate tax rates, on most types of larger corporations, to former levels, and by keeping people employed in the first place. Employed people pay taxes and buy things.
■ Immigrants’ transitions into their lives here can be smoothed by ensuring that there are more decent jobs available for them and their children to take up (see my previous comments), that educational programs at all levels include better options directed at economic success, and that community centres and social agencies are adequately subsidized to meet everyone’s (including immigrants’) ongoing program needs.
■ The key to a good long-term transit plan for Toronto and area is for the provincial government to recognize that the public transit system of Toronto and area needs sufficient financial subsidy from the province to keep transit fares low enough, to keep transit travel times short enough, and to keep transit trips comfortable and convenient enough, to encourage rider use heavy enough to keep transit system revenues as high as possible.
■ Born in Brooklyn, New York, I immigrated to Canada as a very young man. I’ve been a lawyer in Ontario since 1975. Half my career has been in the private sector, and half in government service. I’m used to dealing with government, from both inside and outside. I’ve lived in York Centre since 1980. I want to help each of the people of the riding (and the province) get a better shot.
■ First elected in 1985, Monte fought against the Hudak-Harris Conservatives when they closed Branson Hospital. Not only have the Wynne Liberals opened the hospital, but they are building the new Humber River Regional Hospital at the corner of Wilson and Keele that will be opening in May 2015.
■ The key to a smooth transition and employability is having knowledge and a level of competence of the English language. We have several ESL programs and I will do what I can to assist and encourage immigrants and their children to have access to these programs ensuring that there are no missed opportunities.
■ As a government we have created an organization called Metrolinx that is mandated to improve transit in Toronto, the GTA and other municipalities in Ontario. We have also provided funding for rapid transit across the GTA, Hamilton and other municipalities in Ontario.
■ I have served as Member of Provincial Parliament delivering results for the people of York Centre for 30 years. I have held several cabinet positions such as Consumer and Commercial Relations, Community Safety and Correctional Services and Financial Institutions, Industry Trade and Technology, and Solicitor General. My history of community involvement includes chairman of the Toronto Harbour Commission, chair of the Toronto Humane Society, and founding president of the Toronto Regional Council of B’nai Brith.
■ New immigrants are the backbone of growth in any economy and York Centre is home to many of them. If elected, I will focus on three main priorities to ensure immigrants have a smooth transition: 1. Assist them in finding appropriate ESL programs both through public and private institutions. 2. Help them find mentorship and internship programs. These are effective avenues toward paid employment. 3. Provide support and guidance for entrepreneurial initiatives.
■ The positive social and economic effects that would result from ending gridlock cannot be understated. I will champion a subway across Sheppard, connecting Sheppard station to Downsview station. We need to create an integrated transit network to get people and the economy moving.
■ I’m a committed community volunteer with strong roots in York Centre. Born and raised here, my volunteer activity includes working with The Concerned Kids, an organization that educates children about drug prevention, standing up to bullying and coping with personal challenges. I’ve also managed small businesses and worked at Queen’s Park as an advisor to the leader of the Ontario PC Party. If elected, I’ll bring a renewed vigor and energy to York Centre.

■ Government needs to allow businesses to grow and thrive. As MPP, I will champion low taxes for small businesses. The Liberals want to add a 1.9 per cent payroll tax, meaning that if someone earns $50,000 a year, they will be required to pay an extra $950 annually. In addition, business owners will be required to match that $950. Increasing payroll taxes will not only cost business owners more, it takes money off the paychecks of employees.
