Conversation needed on how to support veterans, says granddaughter of Second World War soldier

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. In honour of this anniversary, The North York Mirror commemorates those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in today’s Remembrance Day-themed edition. To celebrate, we asked for the help of our readers, and they came through by opening their hearts to tell their stories through letters, postcards, photos and personal recollections. Northview Heights Secondary School teacher Katy Whitfield’s grandfather was a gunner in the

Second World War. The late Sgt. Bernard J. McCabe was a member of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, in training and in active service from 1942 to 1946

in France, England, Germany and Belgium. Upon his return home from battle, he married Whitfield’s grandmother, Dorothy McCabe (nee Evanoff), in 1946. Dorothy

While hundreds of thousands of Canadians were showcasing their bravery at Dieppe, Normandy and other Second World War battlefronts, a generation of Torontonians was able to do nothing but await the outcome of the war. Midtown residents David and Carol Wishart were among those who grew up in the city in those days, and both felt the impacts of the war. Carol’s father was away for the entirety of the war, leaving Toronto in October 1939, sailing to England to do his duty and then returning in 1945. “When we saw him that first time (after the war), he hugged my mother and greeted my two brothers, but he didn’t speak to me at first,” she said. “He didn’t know who I was at first because he’d been away so long.” Despite his long absence

While the cottage did not have running water or electricity, the family was riveted by war reports on a small, battery-operated radio.

‘When France fell ...’ “There was a real concern that Britain might be up against it,” he said. “When France fell, we were really worried that Britain would get bombed next.” The fear did not stop there.

David’s father, a doctor who was too old to take part in the Second World War, went so far as to make prepara-

tions in case the Axis powers continued to steam roll over the Allies. “He and a fellow doctor

went and bought an almost deserted farm outside of Toronto,” David said. “Their thinking was that if Canada was next, at least we could get away from the city and hopefully be safe a while longer.” While David admitted that might have been an overreaction, it underscores the mood in the city at the time. There was general fear and uncertainty, even with Canada being thousands of miles from the war front. While they were not part of the war effort in the strictest sense, Torontonians pitched in however they could, most notably through rationing. “Gasoline was rationed, so I can’t remember going

anywhere in Toronto in a car,” Carol said. “If you needed to get somewhere, you went by streetcar.” rubber rationed

When Japan took over the rubber-producing country of Malaya, rubber was also rationed, making road travel that much more difficult. “I was in the Boy Scouts at the time and we went on a camping trip in the scout leader’s car. We had two (tire) blowouts on the way up and all you could do was patch it up,” David recalled. Those challenges on the home front were, of course, nothing compared to the sacrifices made by those fighting overseas. Despite being separated from the battlefront by an ocean, however, those living in Toronto did what they could to support the war effort. “ We d i d n’t s u f f e r i n Toronto, but there’s no question Canada was focused very much on what was going on over there,” David said. “Our thoughts were always with (the troops.)”

In a vote of 34-1, Toronto Councillors decided Nov. 3 to ask the Aga Khan Museum and the Ismaili Cultural Centre be exempt from paying $331,700 in annual property taxes. The museum had asked council to endorse the request

for similar treatment to the Toronto International Film Festival’s building at King and John Street, which pays no property taxes in recognition of the value its presence brings to the city and the province. Memories can conjure up a time, decades old, or they can be from yesterday. But what if those familiar thoughts, feelings, sounds and smells, returned you to a time of war? A time when you thought you wouldn’t survive, weighed down with feelings of dread, by the sounds of the dying and the smell of death? Would you want to remember? This week, The North York Mirror commemorates the memories of Canadian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice from the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War and the recent conflict in Afghanistan and all peacekeeping missions leading up to next week’s Remembrance Day. More than 45,000 Canadian soldiers gave their lives and another 55,000 were wounded in the conflict. A reading of the taxation tea leaves

ou can read a lot of different things in the tea leaves after a big election and there’s lots of readings a fortune teller can pull from this last one. For instance, one might say the election of Justin Trudeau as prime minister represents a generational shift, not just in Ottawa, but in the electorate. Young, inexperienced and optimistic Justin Trudeau came into power despite old, battle-scarred and pessimistic Stephen Harper’s best efforts, and it’s hard not to imagine a group of voters born in the 1990s reacting badly to messaging that someone who at least looks about their age is “just not ready.” Millennials, after all, have heard the same thing repeated ad nauseam since they were in short pants by their entitled elders. Millennials, like the

david nickle the city rest of us, have heard a lot of other things repeated. They’ve heard that government deficits are a cardinal sin, that taxes are best kept low, and that government itself is best kept small and relatively inactive. Based on last month’s federal election and the last few elections in which younger voters have been able to have their say, it’s seeming as though those notions are getting just as chilly a reception as that “not ready” attack ad. Although a conservative himself, Toronto Mayor John Tory was a beneficiary of this post-boom bump, and in his early months, governed in that knowledge, boosting existing services and promising new ones – actively re-

engaging city government in city life. But as a conservative, Tory along with many of his council colleagues are showing oldee timee reluctance to square the circle – to do the things that in the past have been understood as politically unpopular: raise property taxes higher than the rate of inflation, consider new ways to bring in revenue such as road tolls… to increase revenue, in other words, to match aspiration. Very soon, Tory and his supporters on council are going to find a need to do this. Just one of Tory’s enhancements – a return to higher levels of TTC service to undo the transit cuts made in the Ford years – will cost an additional $90 million to fund, fully rolled-out in 2016. An inflationary property tax increase (the maximum that Tory has prom-

ised) will raise $50 million. If that were the only pressure it would be bad enough, but of course it’s not alone. The Toronto Police Service will be costing the city more, and another promise, the mayor’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, is rendered meaningless if there is not significant spending in social services added to the 2016 budget. Taxpayers will also soon have to begin paying for the loan the city made out to itself, to help balance the otherwise askew 2015 budget. Would Toronto taxpayers and voters be willing to look at paying more for better services and a more cohesive city? The tea leaves, imperfect an indicator as they are, suggest they might just.

Performers, staff were volunteers donating time to theatre company >>>from page 1 its 1999-2000 season, where it remained until its last performance of Forty Carats. “It’s hard for me to do three shows a year back to back,” Garbe said. “When I started the company I was in my 40s. I’m now in my mid-60s and it’s not as easy. I don’t have built in infrastructure. I still plan to work in the theatre world, but I haven’t figured out what I’m going to do. I love working in theatre and being part of the theatre community.” Garbe’s love of the stage was inherited by her late father, Jerry Simmons, who was involved with stage productions at synagogue Temple Sinai near Avenue Road and Wilson Avenue. “He got me out to a production of Guys and Dolls he was in,” she recalled of a time in her 20s. “I had a chorus part. It was fun.” A move to Mississauga and raising a family kept Garbe away from theatre for a decade. But it wasn’t

long after moving back to the city in the mid-80s the stage again beckoned. A f t e r re s p o n d i n g t o an ad looking for chorus members for a production in Scarborough of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, she knew she had found her passion. second full-time job “It’s a hobby,” Garbe said of community theatre. “I’ve never made money off it. It’s like a second full-time job

that doesn’t pay me.” All of the performers, staff, and crew of Encore Entertainment were volunteers who donated their time to the company, producing a plethora of shows including Love and Other Stresses, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Garbe’s personal favourites: Ragtime, The Laramie Project, and Anne of Green Gables – the only time she got to work with her daughter, Lea, who had the title role. “It’s a mixed feeling of course,” she said of Encore Entertainment’s closing. “It was a huge part of my life. It’s weird not having somewhere to go to three nights a week. But at the same time, I believe this is the right decision for me. I’m glad I did it, I’m proud of what we’ve done. The audiences kept me going. It’s bittersweet.” She has worked with some notable names over the years, including Lisa Horner, who is currently involved with the Mirvish production

A theatre company founded in Israel has opened its first North American branch in the city. The Toronto branch of Aspaklaria Jewish Repertory Theatre of Israel will perform its inaugural performance Sat. of Dead End Saturday, Nov. 14 at Shaarei Shomayim Congregation, 470 Glencairn Ave., at 8 p.m. Dead End, which is performed by Joseph Fackenheim and Asaf Amiel, tells the story of Jake, who finds himself at a New York City park at midnight looking for his runaway daughter. There, he meets troubled teen Aaron. Jake realizes Aaron can help him better understand his daughter, and Aaron finds someone he can open up to. “Toronto is one of the the-

atre capitals of the world,” Fackenheim, founder of the North American branch of the Aspaklaria Jewish Repertory Theatre of Israel, said of choosing Toronto to branch out in. The wandering theatre ensemble was founded 15 years ago in Jerusalem by Rabbi Hagay Lober and has performed more than 40 plays around the world. The company is Israel’s only repertory theatre company, which is devoted wholly to Jewish themes and culture, Fackenheim said. Like the Israeli branch, the Toronto branch will be mobile, meaning it will go to clients’ venues, such as community centres, synagogues and schools, set up and perform. B o r n i n To r o n t o , Fackenheim moved with his family to Israel when he was three. He pursued the performing arts from a young age and has graced the Israeli screen and stage for some 20

years. He began his artistic association with Aspaklaria Jewish Theatre in Jerusalem in 2009, first as an actor and later also as a writer and fight director. “I’m very excited about it,” he said of the Shaarei Shomayim performance. “It’s Jewish themed content, but the show’s universal.” The other performance currently offered from the Aspaklaria Jewish Theatre’s Toronto branch is a production of Torn, which is performed solely by Fackenheim. The 60 minute, one-man play focuses on a yeshiva student from a prominent religious family who deals with the challenge of living an Orthodox life in the modern world. The war really changed him. He had a tough exterior. He was hard to crack, but he was very loving. He loved his eight grandchildren and his family dearly.” Whitfield said McCabe would only share tidbits of his time overseas with her. She recalled showing her grandfather a history textbook not long after she began teaching the subject in an effort to engage him in conversation about his time in battle. Instead, he disputed the book’s interpretation of a map depicting a battle on the Atlantic Ocean, illustrating a convoy of ships travelling between Europe and Canada. Whitfield has a cousin who completed two tours of duty in Afghanistan, with whom her grandfather was more apt to divulge more details to, both having been soldiers. “The experience of soldiers in war can be both an individual and collective experience,” the high school teacher said. “The voice of veterans can be missed in conversation about Remembrance Day.” She pointed to the Royal Canadian Legion of which her grandfather was a member and its long-standing support of veterans and their families. Established in 1926, the Royal Canadian Legion is Canada’s largest veteran support and community service organization. “We will help you access the care and disability benefits you are entitled to, and provide representation, advocacy and financial assistance free of charge, regardless of whether you are a legion member or not,” Tom Eagles, Royal Canadian Legion Dominion president, said in a statement. The Queen Street Mental Health Centre (now merged into the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) established a separate wing to support shell-shock victims while a veterans’ wing at Sunnybrook hospital was created to meet the ever-growing needs of those soldiers. In 1918, soldiers became sick with Spanish influenza, which they had brought back to Canada after being in close

quarters on the battlefield. Civilians were also swept up. It killed at least 20 million worldwide and 50,000 Canadians – in addition to its 60,000 war dead. Society lost an incredible number of wage earners and left children orphaned in the disease’s wake, Whitfield said. “Families who sent fathers and sons overseas were virtually deconstructed when they didn’t come back,” Whitfield said. “There was some financial compensation from the government, but how do you fill the void of those individuals? ” Society’s needs changed after the Second World War. There was a baby boom after the end of the Second World War, Whitfield said, and thus Canada began building wartime housing as a response between 1945 and ’50. The more than one million Canadians returning to civilian life created a housing demand, not only for new homes, but for an upgrade of existing stock. As Remembrance Day approaches on Nov. 11, Whitfield stressed that, “the conversation about soldiers in battle is equally as important as how we support our veterans.”

On the day the TTC launched its annual poppy campaign in support of war veterans, John Swallow was missing his friends. Swallow was a pilot for the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, stationed at RAF Mildenhall airbase in Suffolk, England. While on bombing runs against Germany, 2,000 individuals, among them British, Canadian, American and Australian, died. Swallow himself lost a brother-in-law as well as several friends. His brother was captured by the Nazis and became a Prisoner Of War. As the years have gone by Swallow, now 90, is the only surviving member of his RAF flight crew, making this time of year particularly poignant. “I’m the last one of my crew now, all the others have died,” he said. “I have no one to reminisce with, but I do sit down and daydream a lot.” Swallow, a retired TTC employee, was among the invited veterans for the official launch of the 2015 TTC Poppy Campaign held Friday morning at Spadina Station. The initiative for the Royal Canadian Legion raises funds for veterans and their spouses, as well as serving

members of the Canadian Armed Forces requiring financial assistance. In addition to inviting Legion members to solicit poppy donations on TTC property, CEO Andy Byford said all transit service will halt for two minutes at 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day, Nov. 11. Also on that day all veterans and serving members of the military will get to ride the TTC for free. Friday’s event also saw the participation of students from Davisville Public School, who had a chance to meet and have poppies pinned by the veterans. “We will always remember, and that’s why it’s so important, and so symbolic, such

a beautiful gesture that our wonderful vets should pin the poppies on the schoolchildren here today,” said Byford who acted as emcee for the event. During the ceremony, Grade 6 student Abdi-Karim Abukar read aloud a letter written by Swallow touching upon his experiences in the war, as well as his 35-plus years as a TTC bus driver after immigrating to Toronto in 1953. Swallow was visibly touched by Abdi-Karim’s performance. “It was unbelievable, he had it absolutely perfect,” said Swallow. “It really surprised me and he was so forceful with his words. I’ve got tears in my eyes.”

A special Toronto Raptors float this year will highlight the upcoming NBA All-Star game, which will be played in Toronto in February next year. The parade will follow the same route as last year, starting at Bloor and Christie streets, along Bloor Street to University Avenue, down University to Wellington Street and east on Wellington, ending at the intersection of Front and Jarvis streets at St. Lawrence Market. At last all’s done, they’re ready to go, The flare’s light up, row by row, The scream of motors fills the night “Listen to her purr, she sounds all right.” Buddy Dick was born in Toronto to Eastern European Jewish parents who had immigrated for a better life. When he enlisted, he was attending Vaughan Road Collegiate. He was stationed in England. He travelled across Europe after the worst of D-Day was over, serving as the driver for a captain who was gathering information for war crimes trials. After his return, he settled back in Toronto, married Irene List (their Jewish mothers arranged their first meeting) and went on to have five children. He started a successful insurance business and loved to travel. He was an exceptional amateur photographer, loved tennis and jazz and made outstanding dill pickles.

Soldier recalls friendships made, not horrors of war BY ELLEN COREY-SAMLAL

rving Banfield Corey (1892-1976) was born in Kingscroft, Quebec, on a farm. In his teens, he took a business course and worked in a number of different places. By the time the First World War started, he was working for one of the banks that existed then. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915, and late that year, was sent overseas. In early 1918 he joined the Canadian Air Force, which had just been created, as an observer.

He kept a diary, which was mostly about his friends and the things they did when they had spare time. This is what he wrote on Nov. 11, 1918, the last day of the war or Armistice Day : “...deserted at dinner but the few present made enough noise to offset the lack of numbers.” He came back to Canada in 1919 and lived a very ordinary life. When he talked about the war to me, he didn’t dwell on the horrors, but on the friendships he made.

ll three soldiers pictured here lived in Toronto. All survived their military service. Pte. Martin O’Keeffe, my husband’s uncle, was originally from Dundee, Scotland. He lied about his age in order to enlist. Jack Cartledge was my husband’s father. He apparently trained with the RCE (Royal Canadian Engineers), but was transferred to the Irish Regiment when he got overseas. He served in Italy, Germany and ended up in Holland where he stayed with a nice family awaiting his return home after the war, probably reading issues of the Green Bonnet (a regimental paper). He arrived home Christmas Day 1946. Pte. William Baker is my father, originally from Northwich, England. At the Dieppe Raid, he was picked up in the freezing water and consequently suffered health problems for the rest of his life. We were given these pictures by our mothers and we cherish them. We also have medals, Martin’s dog tags and Jack’s kit bag.

fter an unsuccessful attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz in Norway’s Kaa Fjord by our Fleet Air Arm fighterbombers on April 3, 1944, all planes but two had returned to the safety of the Emperor (aircraft carrier) just before the weather suddenly changed for the worst and we started rolling and pitching, causing planes to break their moorings. There was so much confusion on deck that my good friend and fighter pilot John Brine of Cornwall, England, who was still flying protective cover for the ship, was told to remain airborne until some planes were safely lowered to the hanger deck. By the time the upper deck was clear, the seas had become mountainous and even down in the engine room, where there was normally less motion, we were holding onto stanchions and railings to avoid falling. John was signalled to land but, just as his fighter came over the stern, the ship pitched, the bow went down, the stern came up, and his plane’s arrester hook

caught the end of the deck instead of the arrestor wire. The hook was wrenched from its socket and the plane flipped over upside down. John sustained a fractured skull and died the next day. We buried him at sea, and that in itself was a nightmare since it was almost impossible to stand, with the ship rolling and pitching. We continued to roll a steady 30 degrees, which is very dangerous, and twice we did 45 degrees, which is usually fatal. Eating and sleeping were practically impossible, crockery was smashed. Planes were wrecked, so we turned into the wind to alleviate our problem. The waves had to be 50-feet high. Our nightmare continued for six more days before the seas and winds abated and we could sail back to our base at Scapa Flow in Northern Scotland. I learned later that we had been given up for lost, and for some years after the war, I had nightmares about being on a ship that turned upside down, but the only one to do that was the Battleship Tirpitz a few months later.

A wartime romance blooms

t was 1944 and while bombs were dropping during the Second World War, a springtime romance was blooming in London, England. It was between Thomas, a brave young 19-yearold Canadian soldier of the North Shore Regiment from Campbellton, New Brunswick, ready to be shipped out to fight on the Normandy beaches in June, and Freda, a strong-willed young au pair girl (a domestic assistant from a foreign country working for, and living as part of, a host family) from Leipzig, Germany, stranded in England and interned for three years on the Isle of Anglesey Wales, by the act of formal Declaration of War between Great Britain and Germany in September 1939. They saw each other for a few short months before being separated by battle. The regiment landed on Juno Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Freda died 15 years ago in 2000, still in London, England. Thomas still remains a mystery. Their loving son, born New Year’s Eve 1944, now resides in Toronto. – name withheld by request

Freda, an au pair girl from Germany, met Canadian solider Thomas while both were in England. The couple embarked on a whirlwind romance. Thomas was eventually shipped out and Freda was left pregnant. The pair never reunited and Thomas never learned he had a son.

have become the family archivist through a series of circumstances and, I must admit, a certain inclination on my own part. It is often a very emotional experience that captures one’s heart and will not let go easily; however, it is also a poignant and touching experience that enlightens and brings joy along with the tears. Many years ago, following the death of my paternal grandmother, my family was going through her home. My father, sister and brothers, aunt and cousins were all sifting through the remnants of hers and my grandfather’s life, hoping to discover a treasure before someone else. What captured my attention was a box of old photographs. Following a few cursory glances from the others, I was left alone with the box as they continued on their search for things more valuable. And I indeed was left with a treasure. Within the box was this old photo of a soldier. I had seen a lot of those kinds of photos before as my father was a Second World

War veteran. But this was different; the uniform was simpler than my dad’s and the young man was not wearing or holding a hat in his picture, the way my dad always had. I turned it over and saw that it was actually a postcard with writing on it. It reads: Dear Friend Just thought I’d send you this post to show you how I feel. I hope everybody down there in the old burg called Galt is feeling well. I certainly am for this is the life for me. How is all the rest down there, dad, mother, and dear old Mary, and little Dutch Charlie. Jim and John, tell Charlie to bring in the cows at 5 o’clock. Must close now Yours Truly H. I have kept this postcard all of these years. My grandmother died in 1972, my grandfather a few months later. I still, to this day, do not know who H. Simon was or what his relationship was to my grandmother. I do know that my grandfather had a sister named Mary and brothers named Jim and John. His reference to Galt (now Cambridge, Ontario) is where they all lived. Regardless of this, I am honoured to have shared the life of this brave Canadian soldier, H. Simon.

City accessibility panel seeks volunteers The city’s transportation department is looking for volunteers for an advisory panel addressing accessibility issues in the city’s street infrastructure. “The Accessibility Advisory Panel for Transportation Services (AAPTS) will provide objective advice to Transportation Services staff on current accessibility issues,” a press release for the initiative reads. Metrolinx is set to begin an environmental assessment study for the bridge, and the groups hope the city’s report will provide an “informed second opinion” on the plan. Metrolinx is also working to visually forecast the bridge’s impact on neighbourhoods.
