Would making Remembrance Day a holiday negatively impact school services? LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com
A
t a Remembrance Day ceremony at North York’s Crestwood Preparatory College, where veterans and students every year share their thoughts about the sacrifice of soldiers and their legacy of freedom, there is a concern those lessons aimed at the younger generation may soon be lost. With the federal government poised to make Remembrance Day a national holiday as soon as next year, schools would be shut on Nov. 11, meaning students wouldn’t be in class for Remembrance Day services. “This is not the time to editorialize, but if this particular day ever becomes a holiday, and I hope it doesn’t, we will miss this,” Vince Pagano, director of the upper school, said at the end of Crestwood’s assembly. Teacher Scott Masters, head of social studies and director of the Crestwood’s Oral History Project that sees students interview veterans and Holocaust survivors, said Crestwood would likely hold Remembrance Day services the day before if Nov. 11 becomes a holiday. But he wonders if that would be true for all schools and if something would be lost by not holding Remembrance Day ceremonies on the actual occasion. “I really like the idea of having kids celebrating it in school,” he

Back row, left to right: Crestwood Preparatory College teacher Scott Masters, students Viki, Andy, Jonah, Hunter, Julia, Justin and teacher Jason Hawkins. told The Mirror, adding school services are also a way to teach students who have recently come from other countries about the importance of Remembrance Day. “If we knew the kids on a day off were going to a cenotaph with their families, and I’m sure many would but I think a lot wouldn’t, (I would be more comfortable with making Remembrance Day a holiday).” Veteran Fred Davies is also opposed to making Nov. 11 a holiday because he wants students to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies in school. Davies was a bomber crew member with the Pathfinders, which worked for the Bomber Command, made up of the Allies,
during the Second World War. Pathfinders were used to fly ahead of the main bomber force to identify and mark the target. Davies and six of his seven crew mates survived after their Lancaster plane was shot down. He was one of the veterans honoured at the Crestwood assembly, which also included relatives of veteran Sam Garnet, a wireless air gunner in the Royal Air Force Coastal Command, transferred from the Royal Canadian Air Force. Before Garnet died earlier this year, he was a regular visitor to Crestwood as part of the Oral History Project. Several Crestwood students, dressed in uniforms
borrowed from Brigadier O. M. Martin Branch 345 of the Royal Canadian Legion, also shared their thoughts about Remembrance Day during the assembly, “Remembrance Day is a day for us to think about those sacrifices that the soldiers made not just in World War One, but also in other wars, too. One hundred years ago, on this date and at this time, the nations that fought World War One, something we all study in history class, decided to call a cease fire, and the terrible fighting on the Western front came to a stop,” Viki Tao said. “This is an important memory for all Canadians, young and old. It is something that connects all of us. It makes me think that I am lucky to live in a safe
country.” Justin Kim spoke about the wars and military exercises in which Canada has served, from the First and Second World Wars, to Korea and United Nations peacekeeping deployments to Afghanistan and the Middle East today. Kim also remembered Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, killed on Canadian soil in Ottawa and Quebec last month. “They, and those who have gone before them, not only deserve a day of remembrance, but a lifetime of gratitude and practical support in the way of long-term care. We need to support, as well, the brave veterans who have already given of themselves for peace, order and good government, the founding principles of Canadian democracy, to all people because the rights we hold dear, as Canadians, are human rights that all people are entitled to,” he said. “If a country is judged by how it cares for the weakest and most vulnerable in its society, on a larger level, countries can rightly be judged for how they respond to the weakest and vulnerable in other nations that are under attack. Canada’s efforts throughout its young history have made a difference, but this has come at a great cost. So we remember today and each day forward the cost that has been paid for us.” Visit http://www.crestwood. on.ca/ohp/ for more information on the school’s Oral History project.

Trustee facing charges woutgoing An outgoing North York school trustee has been charged with criminal harassment and forcible confinement following a police investigation. Police allege the Toronto District School Board trustee “harassed a person” from the fall of 2013 to present. “On one occasion, the trustee forcibly confined the same person,” police alleged in a news release Wednesday. Howard Goodman, 63, of Toronto was arrested and charged on Wednesday and is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 18. He represents Ward 8, Eglinton-Lawrence. He didn’t seek re-election in this year’s municipal election.
Remembrance day 2012 jogger wseeking Toronto police are hoping to identify a jogger who allegedly kicked down Canadian flags during a 2012 Remembrance Day ceremony at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Police said as the man jogged around 2:30 p.m., he kicked down the miniature flags that had been placed in the ground surrounding the Cenotaph at 2075 Bayview Ave., then made an obscene gesture. The suspect is described as white, bald, 5’9 to 5’11, and 170 to 180 pounds. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416808-5300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.

Citizens can find strength in numbers
W
e’ve said it before, that if you’re unsatisfied with something or desire change in this city, you need to speak up about it. But better than that, the best way to effect change is to do it with a united front. There’s strength in numbers, but also strength in shared experiences and resources. This week we’ve seen great examples of that in stories we’ve covered. In Etobicoke, Glen Agar residents concerned about the intensification of development in their neighbourhood banded together and formed a new ratepayers’ association. “We must have a say in the decisions that affect our neighbourhood,” reads their mandate. “No politician or city staffer has a more vested interest in how our community is growing and shaping than each and every one of us.” On Monday evening, a group called WSIC (Why Should I Care?) based out of North York held a forum on transit and urban planning. Motivated by the desire to engage and inform, our view the group hosts public meetings like this to spur discussion and citizens why municipal Effect change show affairs matter to them. through shared In Parkdale, the Ossington BIA – the city’s newest BIA – recently experiences became official, in choosing its first board members. The BIA formed after business owners saw a need to manage the transformation of the Ossington strip and mitigate relations with residents and area developers. And in another show of productive collaboration, transit advocacy groups and the airport workers’ union rallied together in order to push for affordable fares on the upcoming Union-Pearson air rail link. In forming the Our Union Pearson Coalition, the group offers a collective point of view, backed by the voices and experience of thousands. Where groups can learn from each other, share best practices and experiences is where issues will be most effectively resolved. Discover who shares that common interest or has an investment in your area and bring everyone to the table to make the most impact. BIAs can assist resident associations. Issue-related advocacy groups may find a wealth of resources in grassroots community groups. Politicians, school board trustees, police liaison committees – there’s no shortage of people to turn to, when you’re looking to strengthen your cause. Find our stories on these collaborations at www. insidetoronto.com

Santa Claus ready for his Sunday visit In case you missed the exciting news, Santa Claus is coming to town this Sunday. Yes, THE Santa Claus, Jolly Old St. Nick, himself. He’ll arrive at precisely 12:30 p.m. so synchronize your watches. Unless, you have a Smartwatch. It will glare at you if you try and then scornfully remind you that’s it quite capable of synchronizing itself. Santa won’t be sliding down any chimneys during his visit so you don’t have to clean the chute, leave out any milk and cookies, hang out any stockings, have Twas the night before Christmas open on the table, or rehearse any carols. It’s not that kind of trip. It’s strictly a meet and greet. A special celebration of the lovable big guy with the trademark fluffy white beard and signature red and white outfit. He’s dropping by for the annual parade in his honour, the 110th one to be exact, a tradition that began way back in 1905.
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY (At this point my friend Jennifer will ask if I went to that first one and then let out an enormous “Ho, ho, ho.” After which her Smartwatch will remind her that it’s quite capable of doing that itself, too. That it gets the laughs, not her.) The inaugural Santa Claus parade was the brainchild of the Eaton family, owners of Eaton’s department store. It literally was just Santa who came to town for numero uno. There was no Mrs. Claus with him. No elves. No Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner or Blitzen. Not even Rudolph. What’s more, the first parade was said to be more leisurely walk than parade. Santa took the train all by his lonesome from the North Pole to Union Station. Eat your heart out SmartTrack – and
SmartTrack’s Smartwatch. When he arrived, Santa was greeted by a few Eaton family members who escorted him up Yonge Street to their downtown department store, while awestruck kids on either side of the street looked in amazement as the venerable bearded one strolled along. His first visit was so well-received, footmen and trumpeters were added the following year, a horsedrawn carriage in year three and by 1953 he arrived on a fully mechanized float. Fast forward to 2014 – if you’re following this in your time machine, that is. If you’re just reading it, take all the time you need get to 2014. Anyhow, as we get ready for the 110th edition, there are multiple sponsors now and Santa will be greeted by 31 floats, 21 bands, oodles of celebrity clowns, more than 3,000 volunteers, an audience of hundreds of thousands lining the 5.6-kilometre route, network
TV coverage and exposure on all the other platforms available. In addition, a fivekilometre Holly Jolly Fun Run along the same route is now part of the festivities and a Santa Cam on Santa’s float will be taking photos for posterity. When posterity is done looking at them – and posterity’s Smartwatch is done looking at them – anybody else can look at them, too. Lastly, Santa, circa 1905 was known for his lap, Santa circa 2014 will be known for his app, which you can use to track him along the route. What will it all look like in another 110 years? I’ll let you know when I write that column. For now, I’m focused on this year’s parade and I’ve got to get a move on if I want to get my usual spot on Bloor to catch all the action. If we don’t preserve the stories of the community, it’s like a tree that has no roots. – Denise Bishop-Earle

W
ith the revitalization of Lawrence Heights set to transform the neighbourhood, a group of organizations and residents is working to ensure some of the past is not forgotten. Current and former residents of Lawrence Heights and Neptune are invited to help create the Collective Memory Bank this Friday at Lawrence Heights Community Centre, 5 Replin Rd., from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants are being asked to share their neighbourhood stories, memories and treasures to be documented in a memory wall, a video booth, and a photo booth. A children’s area will feature an arts activity for youngsters to share their stories, and all participants are welcome to partake in a group meal. Denise Bishop-Earle, com-
preserving the past looking to the future munity activist and lead resident organizer behind the Collective Memory Bank, said community partners originally discussed surveys as a way to preserve the neighbourhood’s memory, but that idea was nixed. “Because of the revitalization, we’ve been surveyed to death, so I wanted to do something fun,” she said. After consulting with several partners, they came up with the idea of creating a speaker’s corner where residents could record two minutes of their memories, a photo booth to document archives, and a memory wall for those wishing to draw or write
recollections. She’s hoping at least 60 to 70 people come out to the event, and is encouraging former Lawrence Heights residents to partake. Bishop-Earle, who has called the Allen Road and Lawrence Avenue neighbourhood home for 30 years, and is known as “the Rosa Parks of Lawrence Heights” to some, said she plans to contribute a T-shirt from September’s Lawrence Heights and Neptune Walk for Hope and Peace event, and will talk about the healing circle she started in the community. “If we don’t preserve the sto-
ries of the community, it’s like a tree that has no roots,” she said. “If we don’t claim it and pass on, who’s going to know the history? My mother used to say, ‘If you don’t know where you come from, you don’t know where you are going.’ We may not have the best community, but we made it the best we could.” Liz Forsberg, managing director of Art Starts and one of the organizers behind the Collective Memory Bank, said once videos, photos and the memory wall are complete, discussions will be had with residents in the new year to decide how best to showcase the material.
“The landscape and people are going to change over the next 20 years,” she said. “We want to make sure we keep our own stories and memories alive through the revitalization process.” The revitalization of Lawrence Heights, which will be Toronto Community Housing’s largest to date, will see all 1,208 existing rent-geared-to-income homes replaced, along with the construction of 4,092 market units. Demolition is scheduled to begin in the spring and take 20 years for the entire project to be completed. Along with Art Starts, Collective Memory Bank partners include Gladki Planning Associates, Heights Development, Lawrence Heights Inter-Organizational Network, and Toronto Community Housing. Those wanting to help create the Collective Memory Bank should meet tomorrow at Lawrence Heights Community Centre, 5 Replin Rd., 6 to 8 p.m.

Sheppard Avenue at about 2:45 p.m. Only one lane of traffic was open in all four directions for about an hour, causing major traffic delays in the area. TTC buses running to and from the nearby Sheppard subway station diverted to avoid the intersection as did the 97 Yonge bus. A few minutes after the crash, two other vehicles collided on Yonge just north of Sheppard. This was the second diversion for the 97 route. A portion of Yonge Boulevard was closed for a couple of hours following a natural gas leak. That incident happened at Yonge Boulevard and Apsley Road at about 2:15 p.m.

With ‘critical’ months ahead, Pennachetti to delay retirement City’s top bureaucrat convinced by John Tory to delay retirement MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Joe Pennachetti’s retirement party is off for now. Toronto’s retiring city manager says mayor-elect John Tory – along with the
needs of a new council during what Pennachetti described as some critical months ahead – convinced him to stay on for a while. Tory, a new mayor taking office on Dec. 2, said every day the chief bureaucrat
remains will be a benefit for the city. “We have a strong, trusted leader here,” Tory said last Thursday with Pennachetti at his side in the City Hall rotunda. Pennachetti, much praised for his work during the “long four years” of Rob Ford’s administration, had been determined to leave after last month’s election.

Carroll, another council veteran from North York “The watchword here is inclusiveness,” said Carroll, who said fellow councillors have been impressed. “We’re all being calm and Zen about the next little while.” Former mayor David Miller was “pretty exclusionary” as he prepared to take power, and Ford “had his own style,” but Tory seems to be “reaching out to both sides of the aisle in a way that hasn’t happened in some time,” said Denzil Minnan-Wong. “He has an openness about him right now,” the North York councillor added, suggesting it’s a style the public wants after four years of Ford. Minnan-Wong summed it up as “co-operative and conciliatory.” Pennachetti also said he noticed a difference in the transition at City Hall. “The mayor-elect this time around is much more involved in details,” he said.

Tory must speak firmly to feds on transit During the election campaign, John Tory repeatedly said he would “shame” other levels of government into paying for big-ticket items beyond the scope of the property tax base. Specifically, things like housing and transit. Just a few weeks following the election, mayor-elect Tory seems to be waffling. When asked Monday whether he would turn transit into an election issue in the looming federal election, Tory chuckled. After having finished a municipal election, he joked, “The last thought I have is getting involved in another one.” It’s disappointing. Tory, with his Rolodex full of contacts and relationships, might be the city’s most effective advocate when dealing with other levels of government. Surely the best time to bring that advocacy to a government is as it heads into an election and therefore has the most at stake. That Tory seems unwilling to do so is puzzling. A benign explanation might be that he simply doesn’t wish to be seen following the
david nickle the city Toronto Transit Commission’s union leadership, who made the call earlier Monday as it released a report indicating the poverty of our transit system and the need for federal and provincial investment. But the theory advanced by failed candidate Doug Ford – that Tory’s relationships are as much a constraint as they are an advantage – is another explanation. Tory’s candidacy was endorsed by sitting politicians of both Liberal and Conservative persuasion. Taking a firm stance in the context of an election involving the careers of those politicians, after they’d been so kind... well, it’s just bad manners. Hopefully Tory’s reticence to bring up awkward truths with old friends, particularly in concert with natural opponents like the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, is a temporary thing. Because it is going to take some hard talk to engage the current federal
government on municipal issues to any degree. Left to his own devices, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is more likely to fight the coming election on tax policy and the country’s military adventure against ISIS. Municipal matters are outside of the federal government’s wheelhouse as a rule, and they’ll stay that way unless municipalities make noise. That noise need not be confrontational. Former mayor David Miller negotiated significant improvements in financing and governance with both former premier Dalton McGuinty and former prime minister Paul Martin. Miller was polite but not silent. Tory needs to find his own voice, speaking firmly about Toronto’s unmet needs, and assigning responsibility for the fulfillment of those needs correctly, with the governments who have the greatest capacity to raise and disperse funds.

Sex, politics at centre of ‘Peace Warriors’

Standing, from left: Deidre Newman, YMCA Toronto Sheppard General Manager Jorge Rojas, Michael Brenna andYMCA Toronto Sheppard leadership council chair Sid Finkelstein; seated, from left: Taya Jones, Melanie Boulbee, Janet Manley, Lynn Bourque, Juliana Ines Tobon and Laura McIntyre celebrate the YMCA team’s recogntion on Thursday as a Guinness World Record holder after team members ran 171.7 kilometres in 12 hours during the YMCA Megathon in March.
Runners capture world record at North York YMCA CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com A team of 12 women collectively ran for 12 hours on a treadmill at the Toronto Sheppard YMCA for a total distance of 171.7 kilometres to set a Guinness World Record. A formal presentation was made last Thursday evening at the local YMCA, near Bayview and Sheppard avenues, recognizing their recently confirmed world record achievement and for the funds they raised for the YMCA’s Megathon event held back in March. “It’s amazing that we can all do it,” said Janet Manley, one of the 12 women runners from the Greater Toronto Area who each ran one hour to achieve their goal. “I’m over the moon.” The women who participated in the world record event came from all walks of life and different ages ranging from their 20s to their 40s. “It was a challenge for me, but the biggest reason for me is the YMCA. I love what they do,” said Manley, a mother of three young children, adding she was particularly pleased to help raise money for local kids to be able to get YMCA
memberships. Deidre Newman, the team organizer, said that was the initial motivation to attempt to break the previous world record set in 2003 by an Australian team that ran 161.3 km. “The event was for Megathon, to raise money for the YMCA’s charitable fund,” she said. “They all raised funds for the event by obtaining pledges and sponsors.” Newman, who acted as the team steward, added she was proud of the team’s accomplishment. “I stood beside the treadmill for 12 hours, recording every 15 minutes, the distance that was traveled by the runners,” said Newman, a marathon runner herself, noting the team ran at an average pace of under seven minutes per mile. “They were quite remarkable. It’s really inspiring.” Two video cameras were also recording along with two photographers to capture the event, which was then submitted to the Guinness World Record offices in London, England. Several months later, it was confirmed. The new world record was set.
The advance publicity describes the play Peace Warriors as the story of Scooter and his wife, Darryl, who are long-time left-leaning academics. As Scooter starts to drift to the right, a visit from an old friend and mentor causes secrets to be revealed that lead this couple to question their relationship. It sounds like a wonderful concept for a play, but that isn’t quite what the author Doron Ben-Atar has written. The play on stage introduces a set of interesting characters and we learn a great deal about their intertwined histories. Yet while we anticipate the meaty debate of left-versus-right politics, we are instead presented with a college level game of musical beds. Early in the first act the bickering hosts apologize to a house guest for acting like George and Martha out of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The reference to the Edward Albee play is not accidental. In fact, much of the writing mirrors Albee’s style, which helps carry us into the world of Scooter and Darryl and their old
mark andrew lawrence front row centre friend, GW. Jerome Bourgault exudes a great deal of self-confident charm as GW, eventually bedding all of the female characters. He avoids making GW thoroughly repulsive. In fact, all of the characters are sympathetically drawn and it’s fun watching their interactions. Sam Rosenthal plays Scooter, the husband and father not really aware that as his ideals change, his wife and daughter are drifting away from him. Dawn Sadler is a strong and effective Darryl, letting her emotions run out of control in the dramatic conclusion. As their impressionable teenaged daughter, Gwen, Nicole Marie McCafferty registers most strongly in a scene where she overhears an intimate conversation between her mother and GW. This young actress knows how to register hurt and upset without overplaying her hand. As the house guest from

Israel whose visit serves as a catalyst to the drama, Becky Grimman creates a sharp portrait making you regret her early exit from the scene. Director Ari Weisberg keeps the action moving at a crisp pace reaching full gallop just before the play suddenly stops. It doesn’t end; it just stops, leaving us to wonder how it will all work out. A good play should leave you with something to think about. Fortunately after many performances the director moderates an
audience discussion. It’s telling that so many stayed in the theatre wanting to talk about what they had just seen. Peace Warriors plays until Nov. 16 in the Studio Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge St. For tickets, visit www.teatrontheatre.com or call 416-733-0545. Life is a ‘Cabaret’ for Curtain Call Players First seen on Broadway in 1966, the musical Cabaret shocked audiences with its portrayal of Berlin in the early 1930s as seen through the eyes of writer Christopher Isherwood. The story of singer Sally Bowles and her liaison with the bisexual American author gave birth to an awardwinning musical play. Although it was one of the biggest hits of the 1960s, Cabaret has been rewritten and changed over the years with the approval of authors Joe Masteroff, John Kander and Fred Ebb. It is that revised version that is being offered here. Jeff Hookings is a treat as The Emcee, ushering us into the decadent and sexually ambivalent world of pre-Nazi Germany. From the start of his opening number Willkommen he flirts shamelessly with the Cabaret Girls and the Cabaret Boys. There is a great deal of crotch-grab-
mark andrew lawrence front row centre bing and sexual innuendo throughout. But the twinkle in his eye assures us it’s just a show. Erika Tucker makes a dazzling Sally Bowles. She proves a fine actress and a strong singer. Her affair with writer Cliff Bradshaw (representing Isherwood, and very smoothly played by Stephen Koshurba) is doomed from the start. Sally is aware that Cliff has had many men in his life – though not as many as she has had – but she doesn’t take it too seriously. Her conflict drives the title song near the end of the show when Sally decides to abort Cliff’s baby. Abortion? Homosexuality? “What kind of a musical comedy is this?” you might ask. It’s a musical that doesn’t pull any punches. A more traditional sub-
plot involves a romance between an older spinster landlady, Fraulein Schneider, and a middleaged fruit shop proprietor Herr Shultz. When they announce their engagement a friendly Nazi, smarmily portrayed by Glen Burgess, advises Schneider against going through with the marriage. Schneider calls off the engagement. “What would You do?” she sings to Cliff and Sally in a dramatic solo made all the more poignant by Fiona Johnson’s powerfully sung and acted performance. Her Herr Schultz is warmly played by David Rudat. He leads the touching duet Married very effectively. There is also a fine performance by Lisa Ferreira as the call girl Fraulein Kost. Keith O’Connell stages the piece around the onstage band led by Alcina Chiu, sliding in set pieces as needed but generally keep-
ing the stage open for the performers. Jon Alexander has come up with some lively dance routines for the Kit Kat Klub scenes, including an amusing bit for Jeff Hookings to dance with an oversized Gorilla in one number. Cabaret marked the start of the modern “concept” musical, where the songs not only advance the main plot, but also act as commentaries on the action. Each element is there to serve the total vision of the show. Curtain Call Players follow that master plan and the result is both entertaining and stimulating. Cabaret is onstage at Fairview Library Theatre, 35 Fairview Mall Dr., until Nov. 15. For tickets, visit www. curtaincallplayers.com or call 416-703-6181. Show premieres Sunday >>>from page 1 also stars Jesse Sukunda and Ian Duchene, all of whom play characters with their real names. The quirky teen video game addicts aspire to create a popular and inventive YouTube channel devoted to gaming, from Jesse’s parents’ garage. “She’s similar to myself,” Julia, who turns 14 in December, said of her character. “She’s a little more quirky. But I’ve definitely played my fair share of video games.” In the opening episode, Julia races the national karting champion in Mario Kart 8, which she said was a highlight of the series for her.
“Mario Kart is my favourite game,” she said. “I love racing games, they are so much fun. I love the graphics in Mario Kart 8.” Julia, who first picked up the controller at age six to play Super Smash Bros. at her cousin’s house, said she spends two to three hours a week gaming. “There are so many female gamers out there,” she said, when asked if the field tends to be male dominated. “Gaming unites males and females. I don’t think it’s just one gender.” And if boys question her skills, Julia laughs it off. “I’m pretty good,” she said.
show details The first episode of Disney XD’s series Gaming Show (In My Parents’ Garage) will be aired this Sunday at 6 p.m. The series follows Jesse, Julia and Ian as they operate a DIY web series devoted to gaming and kid culture, using Jesse’s parents’ garage as their “ultimate mega gaming paradise.”

O
n the same day Santa dropped in on North York to promote his annual parade, children were at the Ontario Science Centre testing out which toys they are thinking about putting on their holiday wish lists. About two dozen kids, ranging in age from toddlers to about eight, were all smiles as they checked out toys, games and puzzles showcased at the 12th annual Hot Toys for the Holidays event hosted by the Canadian Toy Association on Nov. 4. E i g h t - y e a r - o l d Ja k e Sudsbury good-naturedly explained that he likes toys that let him fight or ambush his friends without getting in trouble, since, you know, adults tend to frown on doing that kind of thing for real. ‘it’s fun, it’s cool’ “Us u a l l y, y o u’re n o t allowed to fight with your friends, that’s the bad part about it, but these things let you just fight with your friends. It’s fun, it’s cool,” he said as he demonstrated Blue Hat Toy Company Battle Boxing Robots. The remote-control robots can hook and jab at each other until one of their “heads pops off,” Jake said. “It’s half electronic and half wrestling so if you like wrestling, it’s a good toy.” The suggested retail price is $39.99. Already a fan of Nerf toys that shoot soft, foam weapons, Jake also liked Nerf Combat Creatures Terradrone remote control robot. Users can manoeuvre the all-terrain, six-legged toy
while shooting Nerf darts. “It’s pretty fun,” Jake said. “I love Nerf guns so I can also attack my friends really easily so I can be hiding and I can just start firing on them and they won’t know where it’s coming from.” The suggested retail price is $69.99. Six-year-old Hannah Ruscio and her older brother Hayden, 8, had very different toy choices. Hannah liked the Furreal Friends Get up & Gogo My Walking Pet Pup, a life-like dog that sits, speaks, walks, wags its tail and can even react when other Furreal Friends are near. Hannah was impressed by the puppy’s red bow and the fact that it doesn’t chew things like her real dog at home, Gypsy, does. The suggested retail price is $69.99. Meanwhile, Hayden was captivated by Crayola’s Virtual Design & Drive, which lets kids bring their car designs to life. While the toy wasn’t properly charged at the show, Hayden explained how he could design his muscle car in a sketch book, take a picture of it with the device and then personalize it and make it do tricks. “I like this one because you get to customize your own cars,” said Hayden, who wants to work with cars when he grows up. “I like a lot of cars. They’re really cool and fast.” There is no suggested retail price. As far as seven-year-old Lila Vittoria was concerned, the best toy at the show was LEGO Friends Jungle Rescue Base because you can use items like a watchtower, a
a hit with kids this holiday season. “You will see all of these toys in the retail stores and we’ve actually asked our members to submit what they think are going to be the hottest toys this holiday season and then we just let the children interact and touch and play and figure our what they’re really interested in,” she told The Mirror. Play is not only a fun pastime for children, it is the way they learn, she said. With that in mind, anyone purchasing toys for kids should pick items that are age-appropriate and appeal to their interests, George said. toys donated

All the toys tested at the show will be sent to children in northern Canadian communities through a five-yearold program called Toys for the North, a partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. “To date, $360,000 worth of toys have gone to the farthest reaches of Canada to children who don’t normally see that type of generosity around Christmastime,” Insp. Todd Gilmore said. Last year alone, 5,700 toys were sent to isolated communities that don’t benefit from toy drives or corporate donations and may not even have running water or electricity, he added.
