York Centre goes Liberal after see-saw election race

liberal sweep

DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Conservative MP Mark Adler is done after one term, losing his York Centre seat in a close race to Liberal candidate Michael Levitt in the Monday, Oct. 19 federal election. The lead changed back and forth between the Liberal and Conservative candidates throughout the night, as polls reported their results. But in the end, Levitt came out on top with a slight lead of 46.8 per cent of the vote (20,109 votes). Adler received 44 per cent of the vote (18,893 votes). “You have my commitment in return for the trust you’ve placed in me,” Levitt said to his supporters once he was declared the winner. “I will work hard for you. I will be your voice in Ottawa. I’ll be your champion. My door will always be open to you.” This returns the riding back to its former longtime Liberal red colours. York Centre had been represented by Liberal MPs since 1962. In 2011, Conservative Adler won the seat from three-term Liberal MP Ken Dryden. This time around, Adler could not maintain the blue wave that turned the riding and many of North York’s traditionally >>>LIBERAL, page 8

North York General Hospital doctor gets Minister’s Medal Medication errors virtually eliminated since implementing eCare fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com A No r t h Yo r k G e n e r a l Hospital (NYGH) doctor h a s b e e n a w a rd e d t h e 2015 Minister’s Medal for his work in developing the Canadian Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) Toolkit. Dr. Jeremy Theal, NYGH’s chief medical information officer and gastroenterologist, was presented with the medal honouring excellence in health quality and safety (individual) by Eric Hoskins, minister of health and long-term care, during a ceremony downtown earlier in October. Now in its third year, the medals annually celebrate the efforts of Ontario’s health care providers in improving care for Ontarians. This year, medals were awarded to one

team and one individual. T h e Ca n a d i a n C P O E Toolkit was inspired by NYGH’s eCare project, a multi-year undertaking to improve patient safety and quality of care through the use of leading-edge technologies that reduce medication errors and provide evidence-based information automatically as doctors and nurses make care decisions with patients. The Canadian CPOE Toolkit shares evidence-based order sets and best practice implementation tools across Canada, at no cost to hospitals. The CPOE is how nurses and doctors enter a patient’s treatment plan, and the order set is like a recipe for treating a specific disease or symptoms. To date, there are more than 1,280 evidence-based order sets available in the

Canadian CPOE Toolkit, and 49 health care organizations across six provinces are members. Another 50 organizations are in the process of signing up. “I thought my chances (of receiving the medal) were small,” Theal said. “I’ve been on cloud nine ever since.” Calling the medal “bittersweet”, Theal noted although the recognition was for an individual, he credits NYGH’s eCare team for the group effort. “It’s an honour to receive the award, but I still feel it’s a testament to what the whole team has done.”” he said of the toolkit, which was created in 2011 and went live the following year. He believes the Canadian CPOE Toolkit is essential in helping health care providers make the best possible decisions for patients.

“It doesn’t mean each patient is treated exactly the same way, but of the choices available, these have proven to be safe,” Theal said. Tim Rutledge, president and CEO of NYGH, said Theal acts as a bridge between the hospital’s front-line clinicians and the information systems team. “His leadership, together with the efforts of staff and physicians, made it possible to implement over 700 order sets that help to ensure our patients receive the highest standards of care,” he said in a release. “Since implementing eCare, we have virtually eliminated medication errors previously caused by manual procedures and gaps in clinical information.”

t appears voters believe Justin Trudeau is, in fact, ready to become the Prime Minister of Canada as the red tide of Liberal support swept the country and all of Toronto Monday night. With a majority government, the federal Liberals now have a strong mandate to implement their policies and the priorities they outlined during the 78-day national election campaign. It’s time now for Toronto residents, who voted in the Liberals in all 25 local ridings, to make sure the election promises and commitments to invest in our city are kept by the Prime Minister Designate and the newly elected MPs. Start by getting to know your local Liberal MP, many of whom are first-time poliour view ticians. As it is a majority government, they will be your voice in for the next four years. City’s priority Ottawa And while majority governissues must ments are more stable, it becomes even more important to hold the be addressed party in power accountable to run an agenda that is in the best interest of those who elected them into power. The next four years with a co-operative federal government that is friendly to major cities can go a long way in building community at a very local level. Just as Mayor John Tory outlined in his congratulatory speech, Trudeau’s commitment to cities includes investments in building transit, affordable housing, repairing social housing and other major infrastructure needs. These are all top priority issues for Toronto, which can’t be addressed by just one level of government. In a city as large and complex as ours, the federal government must be a major player in helping provide a solution to these ongoing issues. Since we also have a majority Liberal government in Ontario, we are hoping they can work very well together to the benefit of Toronto and other big cities in the province. Even if you didn’t cast a ballot for the Liberals, the incoming MPs are elected to represent all constituents in their riding. Keep them accountable to the “positive politics” that Trudeau seemed to champion throughout the campaign. Tory said he is looking forward to working with Trudeau on Toronto’s issues. So should we.

Reader hopes series on dementia paves the way for a cultural shift in our concept of the disease Re: ‘Senior + Dementia Series,’ Sept. 24. Please allow me to commend your publication for exploring in-depth the reality of dementia. As your contributors note, awareness must be central to the fundamental cultural change required on the part of all Canadians. With publication of your series, you contribute immensely to the education, which must be a first step to effecting change. Yet, confronting the challenge of dementia requires more than education, information and awareness. Action is vital. Individuals with dementia rely on the emotional and material support of family members who, themselves, may be frail, insufficiently prepared or simply unaware of available health-care resources. Of those who do try to access needed services,

the bureaucratic demands can prove frustrating and draining. Civic society bears the responsibility of facilitating the well-being of entire communities by accommodating the practical needs of those directly impacted by dementia. As a society, we in Canada are blessed with myriad resources to mitigate the effect of dementia on communities. It is in exercising these variables that we can confront the devastation of the condition. Stakeholders such as Dr. Atiya Mahmood is employing her tenure at the Simon Fraser University to explore architecture as a ‘hard’ feature of the environment, which can influence the quality of life of those confronting dementia, and of their caregivers. Dean Trevor Young helms the executive of the Toronto Dementia Research

Alliance, advising on processes for incorporating study of dementia as an organic condition with the holistic demands placed on communities. Until we each find ourselves directly confronted by dementia, it would be easy to ignore the milieu of grief, loss, frustration, which accompanies our loved ones’ decline, but that is not the Canadian way. Our way is to admit the gravity of a situation, and to undertake pursuit of solutions. For the sake of our communities, and of our society, my hope is that your series marks the start of a cultural shift in our concept of dementia. The condition is not a far-off threat. The reality of its social cost, and emotional and financial weight is here, now. Caril Phang MA, Member, College of Nurses of Ontario

prevention of alzheimer’s wtalk

More than 200 chemical toxics in our environment have been associated with various illnesses and with neuro-inflammation, an altered innate immune response in the brain and with the accumulation of amyloid-beta plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles as the main pathology of Alzheimer’s illness. Children exhibiting neurological effects, cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s-like pathology, have also been connected to air pollution, industrial chemicals and pesticides. It is time for the public to take an active role on prevention of Alzheimer’s. We have no clear public policy, nor political leadership because we have turned a blind eye to the effect of pollutants. Put savings in the spotlight

Rebel David Gibson exhibit shows his fight for democracy Inspired by the Magna Carta’s visit to Toronto’s Fort York, a document that helped establish democracy in the British empire, North York’s Gibson House Museum is showing a piece of national history that helped bring democracy to Upper Canada. Civic Centre, is showing its David Gibson: Democracy in Government exhibit. The show ends Dec. 31. The exhibit shows how rebels such as Gibson, desperate to bring democratic reforms to the government of Upper Canada in 1837, were forced to take up arms. The Rebellion of 1837 failed to bring immediate

change; however, it was an important step in the development of a model of representative government and Canada’s Confederation in 1867, the museum says. Admittance to the exhibit is included in regular admission: $6.19 for adults, $3.54 for seniors/youths, and $2.65 for children (plus tax).

As their candidate fell further and further behind on election might, some Conservative organizers assembled at Joe Oliver’s campaign party at the Toronto Cricket Club were able to take solace the other team in blue – the Toronto Blue Jays – was well on its way to victory. But for Oliver, a comeback wasn’t in the offing and the federal finance minister lost by nearly 6,000 votes to Marco Mendicino, returning Eglinton-Lawrence to the Liberals after a four-year sojourn. Mendicino’s victory was one of many local delights for the Liberals who swept all of Toronto, pushing several prominent Tories and NDP incumbents out of the House of Commons in the process. At his campaign party near Dufferin Street and Orfus road, a jubilant Mendicino reflected on the success of the campaign which also included his victory over Conservative defector Eve Adams to win the Liberal nomination for Eglinton-Lawrence. “Exhilarating, an unforgettable experience,” said Mendicino as red-clad Liberal supporters exchanged highfives and hugs around him. “Fourteen months of work,

the culmination of a truly grassroots and communitybased team effort. I have the support of a strong family and so many friends who live here in Eglinton-Lawrence, and of course the people themselves.” Even though Oliver raced out to an early lead, the outcome was never really in doubt. Around 11:30 p.m. Oliver delivered his concession speech. Later on he admitted it had become apparent before the election Liberal support in the riding was undeniable. “Their momentum was growing, you could see it in the polls,” Oliver said. Mendicino now joins a majority Liberal government and promised to represent the riding’s interests in Ottawa, mentioning public transit, youth employment and public housing as some of his core local concerns. He also paid tribute to federal Liberal leader and Prime Ministerelect Justin Trudeau who he said now has the mandate to turn the page on nearly a decade of Tory rule. “His plan, his vision, is a stark contrast to what we’ve seen for the last decade, which was a decade of divisiveness. We’re going to turn the page on that, we’re going to start writing a new chapter and I’m very excited to be part it.”

Liberal Michael Levitt wins over Conservative incumbent >>>from page 1 Liberal seats Conservative in 2011. Levitt thanked his supporters and volunteers for making it possible. He said he arrived in Canada when he was 13 years old with his mom, who joined him on stage with other family members and supporters. “This country has given us so much and I’m so proud that I get to stand here today with my mom beside me and dedicate myself to giving back to this wonderful country, to working as part of (Liberal

leader) Justin Trudeau’s team in Ottawa to bringing real change, the kind of change that will bring thousands of children out of poverty, the kind of change that will grow our economy, build new transit, create new paying jobs and ensure a secure retirement for our seniors.” The other York Centre candidates in this election were the NDP’s Hal Berman (3,148 votes) and Green Party’s Constantine Kritsonis (794 votes). York Centre had a 67 per cent voter turnout.

Seniors’ Health Centre at NYGH turns 30 FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Gloria Dodd was working as a health care aide in 1985 when she heard North York General Hospital (NYGH) was hiring for a new facility. One of the first to walk through the doors at the newly built Seniors’ Health Centre, Dodd remains on the payroll as an activationist at the Buchan Court site, and is one of about a handful of original staff who has worked at the location for the past 30 years. “Every day I work is a day I enjoy,” she said. “I love my job.” NYGH’s Seniors’ Health Centre is celebrating its 30th anniversary Friday, Oct. 23 at 2 Buchan Ct. entertainment and to recognize staff members who have been with the centre since 1985 – including Dodd. Since its doors opened, Seniors’ Health Centre has grown from a two-floor, longterm-care home to a fourfloor facility offering both long-term care and specialized geriatric services to more than 190 residents. For Dodd, who has been in charge of recreation programs for 29 years, she’s had to adapt to new ways of caring for residents, as current patients are vastly different from the ones who walked in 30 years ago.

“Now there are more in wheelchairs, they need more care, they are mentally and physically challenged,” she said. “Then, they were able to walk and were high-functioning.” Jennifer Bowman, vicepresident of clinical support, integration and strategy for NYGH, said when the centre opened, it was a 60-bed facility. An additional 60 beds were added in 1987, and in 1993, a further 44 beds were brought in. The centre underwent its most recent expansion in 1999, with an additional 32 beds. Twelve convalescent beds are also on site. The centre provides meals, nursing support, personal support worker assistance, physiotherapy, exercise classes, and an on-site pharmacy. “It’s a positive environment for residents,” she said.

No question about it: ‘25 Questions’ has a lot of heart Looking for a show that will make you laugh a lot? The Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company opens their ninth season with the Emmy Award-winning comedienne, actress and producer Judy Gold in an original piece she co-wrote with Kate Moira Ryan, 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother. Compiled by asking a number of Jewish mothers the same 25 questions, Judy Gold weaves a personal memoir around their responses, The result is enormously entertaining, frequently touching and consistently funny. The show runs through Sunday, Oct. 25 and was reviewed at a preview performance. Gold has developed quite a following thanks to her acclaimed TV specials for HBO and Comedy Central. She has also guest-starred on a number of TV sit-coms. Comedy is her life and in this particular show her life provides a framework

mark andrew lawrence front row centre

for the comedy. That is what gives the piece its considerable heart. As funny as the show is, there are many moments that are touchingly real and presented with a sharp sense of comic pacing. Gold’s years of doing standup at top comedy clubs has helped hone her ability to hold an audience in rapt attention for nearly 90 minutes. She opens up about her relationship with her mother, her experiences coming out and her relationship with Wendy, her former partner. She talks about their experiences giving birth to two sons and trying to raise them in modern-day Manhattan. The stories are so skillfully told that no stage embellishments are called for. In an area not much larger than the stages found in most comedy clubs

she spins out her tales and you leave feeling as if you have just gotten to know a really fascinating person. The performance is razor sharp, having played off Broadway for a year and a half followed by a three-year national tour. While the show does play up stereotypes, one wonders what the responses would be like if these same questions were posed to non-Jewish mothers. That idea might provide fodder for an entirely different show, but for the time being we can enjoy 25 questions for what it is: a great deal of fun. 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother plays at the Greenwin theatre in the Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge St. For tickets, call 1-855-985-2787 or visit www.hgjewishtheatre. com Veteran theatre reviewer Mark Andrew Lawrence offers his insights on stage and musical productions for The North York Mirror. McNicoll Bus Garage plans rolling along

The eh List

The McNicoll Bus Garage took another small step to becoming reality as TTC officials were expected to present preliminary design concepts for the project at a public meeting in Scarborough this week. The $181-million project received a major boost over the summer when the Ontario Ministry of the Environment signed off on the last major legislative hurdle for the project. In doing so, it dismissed the concerns of a vocal group of north Scarborough residents that opposes the garage primarily on health grounds. Their concer ns were deemed baseless by the TTC, as well as the Toronto Board of Health. With funding secured and design underway, the garage will likely open by 2019. parties rated on transit plans wFederal

As the daylight hours wane, Cycle Toronto is encouraging cyclists to Get Lit. The group, along with Toronto Police Services and other sponsors, is promoting an advocacy campaign to educate cyclists about the dangers of riding in the dark without proper lights. Unlit cyclists who are spotted can receive a set of front and rear bike reflectors for free.

As the group notes, along with being extremely dangerous, it will now cost cyclists $110 in fines for not having proper lighting. Look for Cycle Toronto’s bright orange Get Lit tent near Castlefrank Station on Tuesday, Oct. 27 starting at 6 p.m. Toronto fundraising ride wCycle

Cycle Toronto, police and McLeish Orlando teaming up to ensure cyclists ‘Get Lit’ at night Campaign planning final safety blitz on Tuesday Cycle Toronto has recently partnered with the Toronto Police Service ( TPS) and McLeish Orlando personal injury lawyers on a new campaign to ensure the safety and visibility of cyclists. Called Get Lit!, the initiative was developed with the goal of renewing the emphasis on cyclists having proper lighting and reflective gear on their bicycles. An initial education campaign, which involved flagging down unlit cyclists along busy commuter routes, educating them on the importance of staying visible and providing them with a free set of reflector lights for a safe ride home, was held Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the Boulton Drive Parkette near Avenue Road and Dupont Street; and Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the Toronto Public Library at College and Shaw

streets. A final one is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Prince Edward Viaduct Parkette, near Bloor Street East and Castle Frank Road. “Cycling is a year-round activity for many people across Toronto,” said Jared Kolb, Cycle Toronto’s executive director, in a release. “It gets darker earlier this month and we’ve got to watch

out for one another out there. Safety is everyone’s responsibility, including the cycling community.” Supt. Gord Jones, unit commander of TPS’ Traffic Services, said in a release improving road safety and traffic flow is part of Toronto police’s commitment to safe communities and neighbourhoods. “Traffic safety is the responsibility of everyone

who uses our roadways, and active transportation continues to grow in the city every day,” he said. “The safety of cyclists and other road users in the City of Toronto is very important to us. We are pleased to be in partnership with our colleagues at Cycle Toronto on this innovative and important campaign.” In addition to Toronto Police Service and McLeish Orlando, local bike shops Urbane Cyclist Worker’s Co-op and Sweet Pete’s Bike Shop are community supporters of Get Lit! The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has recently increased the set fine for improper lighting of a bicycle from $20 to $110. From half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise, all cyclists in Ontario must have a front white light and either a rear red reflector or rear red light on their bicycle. Ontarians riding bicycles also need to be lit when it’s dark due to rain, fog or snow. For more information about the Get Lit! campaign, contact Jared Kolb, executive director of Cycle Toronto at 416644-7188.

Basic needs for newcomers are the same for 25 years >>>from page 1 for the organization almost 24 years ago, NYCH was located on Bathurst Street, north of Lawrence Avenue, and had two full-time and two parttime staff. Now, the agency spans across several locations, including the main site inside Lawrence Square at Allen Road and Lawrence Avenue, and has expanded programing in both the Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board. NYCH services are offered to residents roughly bounded by Steeles Avenue, Yonge Street, Eglinton Avenue, and Weston Road, but school services extend into Etobicoke. “There have been huge changes,” Zuckerman said. “But as we’ve grown and developed, we’ve also found basic things stay the same.” Basic needs for newcomers – finding employment, housing, registering children in school – have remained unchanged for the past 25 years, she said. One thing that’s fairly new is NYCH’s digital storytelling program, which encourages newcomers, young and old, to video record a personal story of particular importance to them,

she said. The program, which has allowed several hundred clients to tell their stories over the past six years, will be part of NYCH’s anniversary celebration Thursday, Oct. 29 at North York Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge St. “It will give people an opportunity to learn about our digital storytelling program,” Zuckerman said, adding smaller events have been held throughout the year to mark the United Way member agency’s anniversary milestone. “It could be their experience in their own country, their refugee experience. They choose the story they want to tell and work with our staff who will help them learn how to tell the story orally and written. New immigrants have often never told their story before.” The digital storytelling program is also part of the curriculum at various schools, and helps both teachers and classmates better understand issues facing immigrant children, she said. “Most of our staff are newcomers themselves and started as clients,” Zuckerman said.

Bombardier fails to deliver low floor streetcars as scheduled RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Bombardier will not be able to meet a revised schedule for delivery of the TTC’s new low floor streetcar fleet. The company has informed TTC staff it can only guarantee completion of 16 of the new vehicles by the end of 2015, seven short of what it promised in a revised delivery schedule agreed to earlier this year. “I am incredibly disappointed to learn Bombardier, yet again, will not be meeting their commitments to deliver new streetcars to Toronto,” said TTC Chair Josh Colle in a statement. “They have let down the TTC, our customers, the good workers in Thunder Bay, and all Toronto residents. We w i l l n o t l e t Bombardier’s incompetence

hold our patient and loyal customers hostage. We will consider all legal and financial actions at our disposal to address this situation.” In response to the news, which was made public last Friday, TTC staff is recommending pursuing a $50-million legal action against the company for late delivery. It is also recommending seeking further damages to cover maintenance costs for the existing streetcar fleet, which must continue to operate in the absence of the new vehicles, and for running supplementary bus service plus unspecified operating and customer impact costs. Back in June, TTC staff expressed serious doubts Bombardier could adhere to a revised schedule for delivering the new streetcars as

part of a $1.2 billion agreement originally made in 2009 to replace the existing fleet, which includes vehicles

dating back to the 1970s. Un d e r t h e t e r m s o f the original agreement Bombardier was supposed

to have had 67 of 204 new streetcars in service by now. There are currently 10. The delays – which

Bombardier has blamed on production and labour issues – prompted Colle and TTC CEO Andy Byford to arrange a visit in June to the company’s Thunder Bay factory to inspect the production process firsthand. The TTC has also granted multiple extensions to Bombardier for the streetcar contract and engaged in discussion with senior company officials to get the order back on track, but all to no avail. A staff report, which will formally recommend seeking compensation from Bombardier, is expected to be presented to the TTC board for approval during its Oct. 28 meeting. Some TTC board members have also expressed the desire to exclude the company from bidding on future TTC contracts.
