York Centre goes Liberal after see-saw election race

DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Conservative MP Mark Adler is done after one term, losing his York Centre seat in a close race to Liberal candidate Michael Levitt in the Monday, Oct. 19 federal election. The lead changed back and forth between the Liberal and Conservative candidates throughout the night, as polls reported their results. But in the end, Levitt came out on top with a slight lead of 46.8 per cent of the vote (20,109 votes). Adler received 44 per cent of the vote (18,893 votes). “You have my commitment in return for the trust you’ve placed in me,” Levitt said to his supporters once he was declared the winner. “I will work hard for you. I will be your voice in Ottawa. I’ll be your champion. My door will always be open to you.” This returns the riding back to its former longtime Liberal red colours. York Centre had been represented by Liberal MPs since 1962. In 2011, Conservative Adler won the seat from three-term Liberal MP Ken Dryden.
