The program will run May to October 2016, with the goal of highlighting arts, culture, and community in the area bounded by Finch Avenue, Hwy. 404, Lawrence Avenue, and Jane Street. Two community consultation sessions were held in October by Toronto Arts and Culture, North York Arts, and councillors John Filion and
James Pasternak, which drew quite a bit of interest from those wishing to see North York thrive when it comes to the arts, Pasternak said. “It was standing room only,” he said of the Thursday, Oct. 22 meeting at Bathurst-Finch Community Hub which he cohosted. “People were interested in how we move forward declaring North York a cultural hot spot.” According to the city, the Cultural Hotspot program aims to provide opportunities for young people in underserved >>>CALENDAR, page 6
North York artist paints 100th Bell box mural The folks at the Bell Box Murals Project are celebrating as the 100th Bell telecommunications box has just been decorated with a mural in North York. Natasha Kudashkina’s mural at 540 Finch Ave. W., near Bathurst Street, is the 100th such completed mural. Since 2009, artists across Southern Ontario have been decorating
these boxes in their communities. Kudashkina’s mural is one of eight completed in North York this year. The other artists to paint the North York murals were Aisha Ali, Tak Bui, Margaret Cresswell, Laya Crust, Ted Hamer, Andre Kan and Chris Perez. >>>MURALS, page 6
