Eighteen months after first reported in The Mirror, an aerospace campus is coming to Downsview Park. Centennial College will receive up to $26 million from the provincial government to relocate its aviation programs to the former de Havilland aircraft manufacturing centre at the park, the college announced Tuesday. “The investment is seen as the first step towards creating an aerospace training and research hub for the development of new technologies in Ontario,” Centennial said in a statement. The de Havilland plant will be renovated to accommodate new classrooms, workshops and hangars and will house an innovation and research working group consisting of industry leaders and academic officials from York University, the University of Toronto and Ryerson University. Canadian first in mental illness support Fundraiser for NYGH’s Phillips House Saturday LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com The first time Theresa Claxton-Wali was hospitalized more than 30 years ago with relentless thoughts of suicide, the experience was traumatizing. “They locked the doors as they put you into the unit. That was very scary. It was a very clinical environment, cold and sterile and not a lot of space to sit down and talk and engage with people,” said the North York native, who was admitted to the psychiatric ward of North York General Hospital in her early 20s. “I got medicated and it was very sedating so I felt very slow. It was so sedating, it was difficult to talk. And (I experienced) this real fear. I was told by the doctor that ‘you’re here until I tell you you can go home.’ And that unknown ‘What do I need to do to get out of here’ and ‘What if I do or say something, is that going to keep me here longer?’ It was really a very frightening experience to be admitted.” Now a patient advisor at North York General for patients with mental illness,
Claxton-Wali, who was hospitalized many times, was always impressed with care staff provided. “The caring and support and guidance I received from the staff was excellent to help me understand myself and (encourage me to do) some of the personal growth I needed to do,” she said. However, being able to do that work in a more nurturing environment would have been so much better, ClaxtonWali said. On Saturday, North York General will host Heart of Fashion at the Shops at Don Mills to raise money for Phillips House, a historic estate the hospital will transform into an outpatient facility for children, youth and women’s mental health services. The centre will be the only one of its kind in Canada, according to Dr. Thomas Ungar, the hospital’s chief and medical director of psychiatry. “To our knowledge, there is nothing like it in the country that we’re aware of,” he said. “It could be a first. It could be really quite a gem.” While outpatients now have to navigate a patchwork of mental health and community services, Phillips House will offer a wide range of programs under one roof in a welcoming setting aimed

at reducing the stigma associated with mental illness, Ungar said. “It’s amazing, a spa can do it. You can get a massage and your hair done in one space,” but mental health services have been scattered, he said. “We want to make this basket of transitional care
so kids and families don’t fall through the cracks. It’s a newer model. Transitional care is not new, but nobody, to my knowledge, has built a dedicated facility offering this basket of services.” Claxton-Wali understands the importance of providing a welcoming and safe environment for children, youth and
women. A childhood trauma led to years of mental health challenges. At 12, she was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, an illness that left her disconnected, paranoid and hearing voices that persistently urged her not to trust loved ones and to harm herself. While she interacted with her loving family during her teenage years, ClaxtonWali had no friends and overindulged with food to compensate for feelings of loneliness. Still, she graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor of science degree, got a job and appeared to be coping. “From the outside, people would say I was holding it together but (there was) a lot of inner turmoil until it got to the point I couldn’t hold it in any more, to the point I was desperate and suicidal,” she said. Claxton-Wali now realizes she is a valuable person. “I think I am resilient, I think I am mentally well. I found my voice and finding my voice has made me a champion for people with mental illness and addiction,” she said.

Cusimano wants to ‘move on’ after guilty plea in voting case DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Failed Ward 9 council candidate Gus Cusimano has pleaded guilty to voting for himself in a ward where he did not live. Cusimano agreed Monday to pay a $1,000 fine for the charge under the Municipal
Elections Act as a part of a deal reached with lawyers for the City of Toronto, which saw a second charge of providing false or misleading information to election officials withdrawn. Cusimano had voted for himself in Ward 9, despite the fact that he resided in Ward 24 (Willowdale). That is
a violation of the Municipal Elections Act, and according to an Ontario Court of Appeal ruling in 2011, inadvertence is not a defence. Cusimano lost by just 89 votes to Augimeri in 2010. He attempted to have the election overturned, bringing evidence of various lapses in the election and initially

mysterious apparition in North York. A spooky voice in Casa Loma. A figure in the window of Colborne Lodge. Toronto is full of compelling tales of the otherworldly. In today’s Halloween edition of The North York Mirror, you’ll find spooky lore with a local flavour on page 10, along with a list of the stories we’ve worked on in all nine of our newspapers across the city. You can access all of the stories online at bit.ly/192hP6w We encourage you to check them out. Toronto’s tales are fascinating, whether they involve the unexchill felt by some visitors our view plained to Montgomery’s Inn or the clipclop of horse hooves said to have City’s history been heard at historic Fort York. But in addition to offering a a valuable spine-tingling shudder, these stories form an important part resource of our city’s history. These are stories that have survived, grown and evolved but at their genesis are about real people in real places. As Ewan Wardle of the Fort York National Historic Site observed during a site tour called Fort York After Dark: “These are real human beings who lived and loved and died on the grounds that we are walking.” We wrote in this space in August about why local history matters. Its importance is not just about remembering or preserving the past. We believe if we know more about our local communities and the people and events that shaped them, we establish closer connections to them. If we make those connections, we’ll have a greater understanding of what we want our communities to be. So what can one do? Consider the resources at your disposal. When it comes to knowing more about our history, your local library branch and the City of Toronto Archives are great places to start your search. Did you know you can research your residence at the Archives? If you have more time to commit, perhaps reach out to local resident groups or a historical society to get involved. We spend a significant amount of time in the communities we live in. Why shouldn’t we find out more about them and want to help them grow?

All dressed up and somewhere to go How about a ban on jamie wayne S nanny-state laws? o, have you got your Halloween costume picked out yet? Not to worry. If you still haven’t figured out what you’re going to get dressed up as, I canvassed kids all over the city to see what they’d be wearing. Here are just a few of the responses. Maybe one of their getups will inspire you. Lailani, age 9, Etobicoke Lailani: “I’m gonna be a witch.” Will you be trick-ortreating as a good witch or a bad witch? Lailani: “That all depends. If the house is in the Halloween spirit, I’ll be as good as can be. But if there isn’t even a pumpkin out front, I’ll make the bad witch in the Wizard of Oz seem like Mary Poppins.” Mario, 7, North York Mario: “I plan on being be a really big bat.” Which one? Mario: “Either Jose Bautista or Edwin Encarnacion.”
BUT SERIOUSLY
Deepti, 5, Etobicoke Deepti: “I’m gonna be a goblin.” So how do you plan to spend your evening, cutie? Deepti: “How else? A goblin candy, a goblin chocolates, a goblin cookies, Rice Krispies squares, you name it. Basically, I’ll be a goblin anything I can get my little hands on.” Chantal, 6, Parkdale Chantal: “I’m going as my idol, Justin.” The Biebs? Chantal: “Give me a break. He’s so 2012. I was referring to the Trudes, the next PM.” Shannon, 8, the Beach Shannon: “I’m gonna be Wonder Woman.” What are your special powers, Wonder Woman? Shannon: “I’m raising six children, I have a full-time job, I’m general manager of my kids’ local gymnastics
club and I can do a marathon in less than three-anda-half hours.” Mitchell, 22, York University student, York Mitchell: Well, I usually go as a vampire, or a zombie, or a werewolf, you know somebody that really gives you the creeps. But this year I’ve got my most terrifying outfit yet, one that would even send chills up and down Frankenstein’s spine. Wow. I wasn’t aware monsters had spines. I must have missed that lecture in university. Anyhow, you’ve got my attention. So, don’t keep me in suspense. What are you going to be? Mitchell: “The NHL standings.” What the heck is so scary about the NHL standings? Mitchell: “The Leafs are in first place.”

To the editor: Re: ‘Smoking rules need to be enforceable, measurable,’ Editorial, Oct. 3. The opinion of The North York Mirror seems to be that it is acceptable to enforce the recently proposed nannystate second-hand smoking recommendations because a “smoking ban is for the greater good.” If that is the criteria for new draconian laws against freedom, perhaps your paper should come out in full support of massive legislation against alcohol consumption as well. Many lives in Ontario, and indeed globally, are affected by the lingering effects of alcohol. It would, after all, be for the “greater good.” Instead of new rules, how about a ban on ridiculous nanny-state laws? David Maharaj

Research solely dedicated to youth >>>from page 1 every year, which works out to two or three players on each team, or about 36,000 province-wide, she said. Concussions are responsible for about 38 per cent of hospital emergency room visits by Ontario children and teenagers every year. “This (the number of children suffering concussions) is really a call to action,” Keightley said. “Despite the growing interest in sport concussion, despite understanding it is a common injury, despite knowing childhood is a time when they are even more vulnerable to this injury, nowhere is there any research or clinical program that is solely dedicated to youth.” The centre will conduct research in a number of areas including challenging routine advice that young victims should rest completely following a concussion and properly managing treatment so children and youth can get back to activities. “It is our hope doing all this we will have some pretty happy campers who are ready to get back to doing what they love,”
Keightley said. Sean Killin, 16, suffered his first concussion four years ago when he was checked headfirst into the boards during hockey. His team had already partnered with Keightley to do some baseline testing and it was evident Killin’s cognitive, strength and balance abilities were impaired for quite a while after his injury. “I think all young athletes should take concussions quite seriously. After all, it’s your brain, right?” he said. “What’s more important, three more weeks in the playoffs or the rest of your life with your brain?” The centre is being funded through grants by the Canadian government and a $1-million donation from the Trillium Au t o m o b i l e De a l e r s Association. Keightley and her team are receiving $1.2 million over five years from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Canada’s federal funding agency for health research, to conduct research to improve the identification, assessment and management of children and youth with

NORTH YORK’S SPOOKY STORIES FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com
H
enry Mulholland and Jane Armstrong’s youngest children were playing outside when they saw their father walking up to their home, returning from his time at sea to bring the Irish to what was then Upper Canada. The kids ran inside to tell their mother her husband was back, and she, too, saw him outside. But then suddenly, he vanished. At that moment, Armstrong knew something had happened, and a short time later received word her husband, then aged 44, had drowned. What they apparently saw was an apparition of Mulholland, a pioneer who had emigrated from County Monaghan, Ireland and received a crown land grant of 400 acres in 1806 near the present-day intersection of Leslie Street and Sheppard Avenue. Preferring the dense forests of Downsview, the family bought 375 acres of land north of Lawrence Avenue, between Bathurst and Dufferin streets, in 1812. Mulholland, who fought in the War of 1812 and later returned to Ireland to bring back more settlers to Upper Canada, made several trips back and forth before his fatal voyage aboard the Lady of the Lake on that day in May 1833. AFTER-DEATH SIGHTING Plaques dedicated to the memory of Mulholland and Armstrong can be found on a cairn near the western end of Manorpark Court, though it excludes mention of the supposed after-death sighting. The Mulholland apparition is not the only ghost story with North York ties, but it’s the biggest one by far, said North York author John Robert Colombo, who has published some 700 accounts of supernatural and paranormal experiences across Canada. “North York is a very practical community, they don’t usually bring ghosts with them,” he said.

“I almost stopped writing about haunted sites because the current owners of the locales don’t typically like the street numbers disclosed. It devalues their property. It’s called scarring. But public places, that’s another matter.” Public interest in haunted sites and paranormal activity is a sign of the times, Colombo said, adding seances became popular during the First World War as a way for families to connect with their departed soldiers. “I feel experiences run in families,” he said. “I write up their accounts in good faith. It’s not my job to say it didn’t happen. Houses have personalities and some are gloomy. It’s a matter of presentation. You can contact a psychic, they ask to tour the house with you, and you listen to the stories being told. A second psychic might explore and give another variation.” Colombo, who has authored The Big Book of Canadian Ghost Stories, The Big Book of Canadian Hauntings and Jeepers Creepers: Canadian Accounts of Weird Events and Experiences, dryly suggested if anyone wants to have a haunted experience, they can
pause in front of any Catholic church – to feel the presence of the Holy Ghost. Jeanne Hopkins echoes Colombo’s thoughts on North York’s most famous ghost. A member of the North York Historical Society, Hopkins has written a book on Mulholland’s farm, and is familiar with the story of his ghost appearing to his family. “It’s the most well-known one in North York, because people have written about it,” she said. “I think people probably see ghosts, they tell their friends and descendants, and it’s all word of mouth. Stories are passed down to generations.”
“We leave it up to everyone to interpret,” said society researcher Darren Boyle. “We present what’s been presented to us.” In his opinion, the term “haunted” means something happened that defies explanation and
has many questions swirling around it. “You smell something, you see something, something touches you,” Boyle said. “Many times you’re in a house and someone says, ‘Did you hear that?’” Black Creek Pioneer Village is another site filled with haunting tales. Several ghost tours were held last Saturday at the Jane Street and Steeles Avenue site, with participants encouraged to bring cam-
GHOSTLY RESEARCH According to the Ghosts and Hauntings Research Society’s website, 24 ghostly accounts are listed for North York, including private residences, York University’s Keele and Glendon campuses and Gibson House Museum. The society, which claims to be Canada’s oldest established website and group devoted to ghosts and hauntings, does not reveal the names or contact information of the people posting to the site.

eras and ghost hunting tools, said events co-ordinator Karell Pfeiffer. The events focused on experiences people had in various buildings, the most notable one taking place inside Stong’s Second House, she said. Built in 1832, the house is original to Black Creek Pioneer Village. People have reported hearing footsteps, noises and doors opening and closing. And sometimes, the chains that cordon off rooms have swayed on their own. FIRST BURIAL Pfeiffer said some believe the unexplained activities can be attributed to the ghost of Michael Stong, who died as a teenager on the property in 1845 in a hunting accident and was the first burial at Black Creek’s cemetery. “A few years ago, a group of teenagers came to the site one day, and they were in a room and couldn’t get the door to open,” she said. “No one from the outside could open it either. It wouldn’t budge. One of our story interpreters yelled, ‘Michael Stong, stop it right this minute.’ And then the door opened.”

encounter leads to questions wvideo A video gone viral of a violent subway encounter has led to questions of how the TTC deals with unruly riders. The short video of the altercation at Davisville station has already attracted thousands of views since it was posted to Facebook late Saturday. It depicts a seemingly inebriated man blocking the subway train doors at Davisville before being confronted by an irate patron. No TTC staff are seen in the video intervening, but TTC spokesperson Brad Ross’ advice is to avoid confrontations and instead make use of the passenger assistance alarm to summon help. The TTC also wants its transit enforcement officers to be conferred with special constable status, which would grant them powers of arrest in emergency situations. committee member honoured wTTC

You may have told your doctor you suffer with one or more of the following: sore knees, stiff knees, painful hips, low back pain, mid back pain, neck stiffness or pain, hand stiffness, shoulder pain or elbow pain. You go to the drug store or to your doctor and get pain killers. But you find the pain keeps coming back. So you go back, again and again, and get the same or different drugs to make you feel better. You probably feel you are getting dependent on the drugs and there is no other option. Alternatively, the doctor may refer you to a specialist who may tell you that surgery may be an option. However, many people are hesitant to have surgery given its invasive nature. You may also know that although surgery is sometimes necessary, it is considered a last resort in most cases. You are likely frustrated by having to suffer with the pain
but may also be concerned on your dependency on the pills and their side effects. You may have heard that there are serious health risks associated with regular use of pain pills or anti-inflammatory drugs that include damage to the liver, kidneys and gut. To help sufferers, an upcoming workshop on Arthritis Relief is being provided to the community. This information has helped countless sufferers feel better and become more active… without drugs or surgery. These are treatments that you need to know and that your doctor may not mention. As a community service, the Doctors’ Speakers Bureau is providing this free workshop on Wed. November 6th from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. The location is Wellness First, 7315 Woodbine Ave, Markham. Seating is limited.

How to sell a house that didn’t sell
North York - If your home has just come off the market and hasn’t sold, don’t be discouraged. The reason your home did not sell may have nothing to do with your home or the market. In reality, your home may have been one of the more desirable properties for sale. So Why Didn’t Your Home Sell? Last year many of the homes listed for sale never sold at all, and many sellers found that there was a tremendous amount a homeowner needed to be educated on to sell their home for top dollar in the shortest time period. Don’t risk making the wrong choices and losing both time and money on your investment. Before you hire a realtor, know the
right questions to ask to save you time and money. Industry experts have prepared a free special report called“How to Sell a House that Didn’t Sell” which educates you on the issues involved. Stintz aims for centre-right vote in mayoral run
K
aren Stintz’s early arrival in the 2014 mayor’s race can’t be a surprise to
anyone. The councillor from Eglinton-Lawrence has been not-so-quietly organizing a campaign
for months, and not-quietlyat-all taking control of the kind of major policy matters – specifically, transportation – you’d expect the current mayor to do. She might have continued that course for a few more months. But with John Tory mulling a run, Stintz had to up her game early and decisively — if for no other purpose than securing some fundraising real estate before the rush next year. In this, declaring early is a good strategy. However, an early declaration for a candidate also invites early assessments. Out of the gate, Stintz is attempting to paint herself as a fiscal conservative similar to Mayor Rob Ford in that respect, but... well, completely opposite in everything else. Well and good, but political branding is only partly self-portraiture, and Stintz will have to deal with matters beyond her control. Stintz owes a large part of her public profile to the work she’s done on the public transit file as chair of the Toronto Transit Commission.
david nickle the city In the latter part of the term, she’s worked to improve customer service, and she’s been a central figure in the subway-LRT debate. There are problems, though. On the latter point, Stintz has been all over the map – starting the term out supporting light rail over subways and helping to halt Ford’s plan to replace the Sheppard light rail line with an unfunded subway. Shortly after that, she came forward with her One City transit plan – tenuously funded, with a politically unpalatable property tax premium – that included a different Scarborough subway. Council balked, and Stintz left the chamber with egg on her face. Finally, Stintz delivered a subway to Scarborough – funding of which is also tenuous, with federal money tied to a Sheppard-style public-private partnership arrangement and a boatload of new debt. For all her jour-
neyman work, Ford wasted little time in taking credit. On the customer service question... well, Stintz also helped Ford deliver his first flatline budget by agreeing to service standard rollbacks on the TTC. In that way, one might argue that Stintz created the very problem that she’s now working to solve. With all that, she still remains a formidable challenger in the fight for the essential centre-right vote. On Monday, the mayor conceded the election would be “a bloodbath,” because his opponents would no doubt go after him on matters of character, associations, truancy and other “personal matters.” The mayor is no doubt correct. His behaviour and comportment have assured all those things will be central questions in his re-election bid. And Stintz, while certainly haunted by controversies and mis-steps of her own, has shown herself to be an active and at-times effective leader on council – not a bad start.

prayer to
O Mother of Perpetual Succour, behold me a miserable sinner at thy feet. I have recourse to thee and put my trust in thee. O Mother of Mercy, have pity upon me. I hear the called by all, the refuge and the hope of sinners, be then my refuge and my hope. Succour me for the love of Jesus Christ; stretch forth thy hand to me, a poor sinner, who recommend and dedicate myself to thee, as they perpetual servant. I bless and thank God, for, having in his Mercy given me this confidence in Thee, the pledge, as I believe, of my eternal salvation. Alas, too often in past times have I miserably fallen, because I had not recourse to thee, I know that with thy help I shall conquer. I know that thou will help me, if I recommend myself to thee, but I fear lest in the occasion of falling, I should cease to call upon thee, and, so should loose my soul. This then is the grace I seek from thee, and I beg of thee, as far as I know how and can, to obtain it for me, namely, in the assaults of hell, always to have recourse to thee and to say to thee: O Mary, help me, Mother of Perpetual Succour, suffer me not to lose my God. Amen. - V.A.D.

Hazel was fortunate at the end to be surrounded with love in the presence of her family and friends at Sunrise of Aurora. Predeceased by her husband John, grandson Christopher, and sister Dorothy Irving. She will be greatly missed by her children Lillian (Larry) Hall, Jack (Karen), Jocelyn (Lester) Bates, grandsons Cameron (Kristi), Bradley Bates (Jamie), Bryan Bates (Lindsay), great-grandson Hunter, sister Melva Snyder, and her many relatives and friends. She taught in a one room schoolhouse in Saskatchewan prior to serving in the RCAF during WWII as a Sergeant with Administrative Services in Ottawa. Hazel was known for her passion for golf, having enjoyed many years at Toronto Ladies Golf Club and Bayview Country Club. Bridge, Curling, UCW at Newtonbrook United Church, and volunteering for Meals on Wheels were among her many interests. A heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Sunrise Aurora for their endless kindness and exceptional care, and to Dr. Norm Kalyniuk for his care and friendship. Thank you also to the staff and physicians at Southlake Regional Health Centre. A Celebration of Hazel’s life will be held on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Cummer Avenue United Church (formerly Newtonbrook United Church, 53 Cummer Avenue). The service will be followed by a lunch in the church Fellowship Room. Interment to follow at York Cemetery at 2 p.m. As an expression of sympathy, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Cummer Avenue United Church, Heart & Stroke Foundation, or Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket.
