A charitable organization focused on delivering art programing to underserved communities is turning to crowdfunding to save a fashion program after its funding ended. Art Starts, which runs out of Yorkdale Shopping Centre, is hoping to raise $3,000 by Thursday, Sept. 18 to keep the Sew What?! program going through the fall semester while working to secure long-term funding, the organization said in a release. The Ontario Trillium Foundation funded the youth program for the last three years. The funding ended this year. The fashion arts program trains Toronto youth to pursue fashionfocused careers and further their education. More than 75 youth have graduated from the Sew What?! program, and three recent graduates have been accepted into accredited post-secondary programs. “Over the past three years, I have personally seen the positive impact that Sew What?! has had on the participants,” program manager Carleen Robinson said in a release. “We look forward to continuing this arts training over the years to come.” To donate to the crowdfunding campaign, visit www.artstarts.net or https://greedygiver.com/campaigns/ Save-Our-Program

Construction worker, 19, killed in house collapse on Brookdale Avenue ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com A 19-year-old construction worker is dead and another worker is recovering from serious injuries after a house collapsed on them in the Avenue Road and Lawrence Avenue area Tuesday. Police said the workers were deepening the basement when the home, on Brookdale Avenue near Greer Road, gave way at 2:08 p.m. “They have to stabilize the walls and then dig down to make the basement deeper. That’s what they were doing,” Det. Sgt. Sean Brosnan said. The company doing the renovation did have a permit, he said. Division Commander Bob O’Hallarn of Toronto Fire Services said there were four workers in the house at the time of the collapse. One got out on his own while another was assisted out by firefighters shortly after they arrived. Two others were trapped

One dead after shooting at Jane/Lawrence A man is dead following a shooting in the Jane Street and Lawrence Avenue area Monday. under the rubble. “One of them was pinned by a beam, which we managed to move with air bags,” O’Hallarn said at the scene. “We were able to get close enough to him to get air bags under the beam and lift it off his legs so he could get out.” The worker was taken to Sunnybrook hospital via an emergency run.

A Toronto EMS spokesperson said the victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. O’Hallarn said the other trapped worker was “under a pancake collapse” and was pronounced dead by paramedics. “When we moved enough material from the back, and a lot of that was done by hand, they (paramedics) managed

to get close enough to him to get a monitor on him and they informed us that he was deceased.” The body was freed from the debris at about 9:45 p.m. About 50 firefighters were at the scene at the height of the rescue. Four ambulances and an ambulance bus were also on scene. “This was a two-storey

residence. Ever ything’s in the basement now,” said O’Hallarn, noting fire crews are concerned about the structural integrity of a house next door “because of the amount of material that’s leaning against it and the amount of shaking when this came down.” Police and the Ministry of Labour are investigating the cause of the collapse.

et this be a municipal election campaign about ideas: not just the sharing of ideas but also how they can get implemented. Ideas on how our neighbourhoods can grow and evolve. Ideas on how our residents can become more engaged. Ideas on how our citizens can work together. By tomorrow afternoon, the final candidate list for Toronto’s mayor, councillors and school board trustees will be set. And we need to see what our candidates have to offer. But in addition to concrete proposals for their respective communities, candidates must offer how they intend to work with others – the citizens they’ll be representing as well their our view political colleagues. When it comes to representYour municipal ing constituents, it is possible earn respect – and ulticandidates must to mately build consensus – from earn their votes a wide range of viewpoints. That comes from being professional, from being diligent and by listening to all stakeholders. When it comes to working with political colleagues, Toronto council is made up of 45 elected representatives. The Toronto District School Board has 23. The Toronto Catholic District School Board has 13. An individual running for office is ultimately just one voice at the table. Even someone with the power and resources of the mayor’s office can have their vision sidelined – and we did witness that in this most recent term of council. Toronto has a lot of diverse (and sometimes competing) interests. Being able to connect with a diverse group of stakeholders on a myriad of issues – especially on those where a fundamental disagreement exists – is not an easy task, but it is a necessary one. To the candidates: Be prepared to offer your vision. Be prepared to back it up with facts and observations. But be prepared to explain a more challenging question: How would you work with your constituents and elected colleagues to push that vision forward? To Toronto’s voters: Inform yourselves on the issues that matter in your respective communities. Respect your vote – and make the candidates earn it. Following in Jose Bautista’s ‘gone yard’ steps I don’t catch all the Blue Jays games, but it sure seems like every time I do tune in, Jose Bautista has just “gone yard.” Usually at a key moment, too. For those who don’t keep up with baseball lingo, going yard is a more colourful way to describe a home run. For those who don’t keep up with baseball, let alone its lingo, a home run is when a batter hits the ball over the fence after it’s travelled the length of the yard – a.k.a. park, a.k.a. playing field – hence the phrase. Anyhow, announcers love the expression, using it repeatedly in various forms; it has become a mainstay of baseball highlight reels. Friday night after Bautista and teammate Edwin Encarnacion each clobbered their 30th home runs of the season, it was a veritable gone yard fest on all the sports shows. In fact, I was so inundated with the phrase I couldn’t get it out of my head the next day and Saturday night

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY I fell asleep right after turning on the Jays game and had the strangest dream. Obi-Wan Kenobi was whispering it to me. “Go yard, Luke, go yard,” he urged. “Why are you calling me Luke?” I asked. “Just be happy I’m in your fantasy and go yard, already,” he snapped. “Will the force be with me venerable one?” “The back of my hand will be with you in a second if you don’t get a move on,” he growled. “A little less talk and a little more action. Now, go yard.” Then he vanished in a puff of smoke, although it was hard to tell if it was actual fumes or just special effects. I was groggy when I woke up Sunday morning and could still hear his words as I headed outside hoping fresh air would clear

my head. But no such luck. I was immediately greeted by signs on every lamppost echoing Obi-Wan’s commands: “Go yard.” “Go yard.” “Go yard,” they all said. I pinched myself to see if this was all just a bad dream sequel, but when I turned the corner, it was clear this was all very real. At the first house I saw they were holding a yard sale. “Go yard” it said out front in bold letters. Well I’ll be. In all my years, I’ve never been to one. So that was what this was all about: me attending my first yard sale. How could I resist? I have to tell you, I was so impressed with what I saw, I bought that yard and took it straight home. Inspired, I went out to check out all the other such sales I had ignored throughout my life. I went to a patio sale and I picked up an adorable patio. I went to an attic sale and purchased a charming

attic. I got a cosy basement at the basement sale and the cutest little garage at the garage sale and then wrapped it all up with a brand new, unused sidewalk at the sidewalk sale. Talk about hitting a home run. I was towing it all in a big trailer when I drove by our neighbourhood’s favourite pessimist, Nigel Naysayer, who looked on in disbelief. “Patio? Attic? Basement? Garage? And sidewalk, too? Have you lost your marbles?” he snarled. “Where is all that stuff gonna go?” Suddenly, Obi-Wan appeared in a haze overhead and was about to answer him when I quickly stepped in. “Where do you think, Nigel,” I interrupted. “Yard, baby, yard. They’re all gonna go yard. The best yard ever, too. Mine.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Two North York hospitals post notices to maternity patients after privacy breach LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Humber River Hospital and North York General Hospital were required by the provincial privacy commissioner to post notices on their websites advising maternity patients that their personal information may have been provided to baby photographers. They were two of six Toronto hospitals involved in the privacy breach. The others were Rough Valley Health System, Mount Sinai Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Toronto East General Hospital. “For some time, the hospital’s Mother & Baby unit offered baby

photography services through Just Arrived Baby Photography (the photographer),” a notice posted on Humber River’s website said. “We have recently learned that, between January 2010 to June 2013 at the Church Street Site, and January 2010 to June 2014 at the Finch Avenue Site, instead of simply receiving the name and room number of new mothers to determine whether new mothers would like to receive the photography services offered, the photographer was provided with a list daily which contained patient name, room number, age, chart number, physician name and type of obstetrical service.” North York General posted a

similar message on its website, saying it also offered photography services through Just Arrived Baby Photography. “We have recently learned that, between March 2013 and February 2014, instead of simply receiving the name and room number of new mothers to determine whether new mothers would like to receive the photography services offered, the photographer was provided with a list daily which contained patient name, room number, age, gender, physician name, service (obstetrics) and length of stay,” the notice said. The lists were only used to approach new mothers in the hos-

pital to offer photography services, both hospitals said. “It was not used for any other purpose and it was not provided to any third party. At the end of the day, the list was returned to the nursing station for shredding,” they both said on their websites. “The hospital takes privacy protection very seriously and sincerely regrets this breach of privacy. We are conducting a review of our practices to ensure that privacy is protected.” Humber River patients who want to discuss the issue can contact We’re Listening at 416-243-4697 or email at cgooden@hrh.ca, while North York General patients can call Patient Experience at 416-756-6125.

Helping linked to happiness >>>from page 1 a project called Baycrest Research About Volunteering in Older Adults (BRAVO). For this report, lead investigator Dr. Nicole Anderson and scientists from Canadian and American academic centres looked at 73 studies conducted in the last 45 years that assessed adults over the age of 50 who volunteered. “We discovered a number of trends in the results that paint a compelling picture of volunteering as an important lifestyle component for maintaining health and wellbeing in later years,” Anderson said in a statement. For example, volunteers suffered fewer symptoms of depression and enjoyed better overall health. Seniors with chronic health conditions may benefit most from volunteering, the report said.

Islamic artifacts represent 10 centuries of history FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com The Brazilian granite gleams under the hot September sun, the 45-degree angled building reflecting and absorbing light as it casts a shadow on itself. Rows of mature trees line the parkland, designed by landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic, where water slowly flows from four giant pools. A number of benches allow for those seeking quiet tranquility to take in the vast green space. The doors will publicly open to the Aga Khan Museum Thursday, Sept. 18 on Wynford Drive, after breaking ground in May 2010. The 17-acre, $300-million

development in the Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue area, which also includes the Ismaili Centre Toronto, is the site of the former Bata Shoe headquarters. The museum will be the first in North America dedicated to Islamic arts and cultures. On a recent tour of the 10,000-square-metre museum, designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, workers were busy putting final touches on the auditorium and galleries, and grounds keepers were focused on perfecting the park. The heart of the museum – the courtyard – provides enough light to keep the immediate area bright all day long, with a modern interpretation of patterned wooden

screens known as mashrabiya lining the glass walls. Across from the courtyard is a ceramics gallery that tells the evolution of ceramics in different geographical regions, said Ruba Kana’an, who looks after the museum’s education and scholarly programs. A reading alcove will be full of art books, with book cases from the 16th to 19th centuries. The permanent gallery will house some 1,000 pieces of art belonging to the Aga Khan and his family, including portraits, textiles, miniatures, manuscripts, ceramics, tiles, medical texts books and musical instruments representing more than 10 centuries of human history and a geographic area stretching from the Iberian Peninsula

to China. A world map on the wall will allow visitors to better understand where the art comes from, Kana’an said, adding pieces reflect the types of stories the museum wanted to tell. One of the pieces is a 15th century water fountain from Egypt, which was likely used in an upper-middle-class home or palace as a natural air conditioner. “You could imagine this in the middle of a household with a raised roof and windows,” she said. Blue and white 14th century jars from either Egypt or Syria used to transport medicinal herbs and spices are in the company of other ceramics from that era. The Iranian

ceramics were clay based, as only China had access to porcelain back then, Kana’an said. “(Muslims) were fascinated by something they didn’t have,” she said. “There was always a back and forth between the Muslim world and China. China played a big role because of the trade.” And the earliest surviving manuscript of the Qanun of Ibn Sina, an encyclopedia of medieval medical knowledge taught in European medical schools until the 18th century, will be available for viewing. Kana’an said the museum has been in talks with Ontario school boards to see how its teachings can be used in the curriculum, adding teacher training by the museum will be offered several times annually. The 350-seat auditorium will be used for various cultural events, said Azim Alibhai, chief communications consultant for the Aga Khan Museum. Standing in the North York park, surrounded by hundreds of new trees and shrubs, Alibhai explained why the neighbourhood was chosen for the large development. “We wouldn’t have a beautiful park if it was downtown,” he said. “It’s an accessible space and the land was available. Toronto made sense because of its diversity and pluralism.

The most fascinating thing, is it allows the discovery of things we didn’t know, or weren’t sure of. The idea is to make the arts of Islam better known. There is always a need for information on any topic, this just happens to be art.”

The Aga Khan Museum officially opens on Thursday, Sept. 18 on Wynford Dr., near Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue. The museum shares its site with the Ismaili Centre Toronto, which will include a place for prayer, a library, youth lounge and public spaces for cultural activities. Designed by Indian architect Charles Correa, the Ismaili Centre Toronto is the second in Canada, behind the site built in Burnaby, British Columbia in 1985. Other Ismaili centres have been built in London, Lisbon, Dubai, United Arab Emirates and Dushanbe. Since 2007, temporary exhibitions of major works of art from the Aga Khan Museum collection have been showcased in France, Russia, Portugal, Germany, Turkey, Malaysia and Singapore.

Bells on Yonge draws attention to need for safe cycling network Bike ride set for Sunday JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The annual Bells on Bloor cycling event has grown to include thousands. Now, a relatively new event is hoping to do the same. Bells on Yonge, a sister event to Bells on Bloor, aims to draw attention to the need for a safe cycling network throughout the city. Though it is named for one of Toronto’s best-known roadways, event spokesperson Ken Brown said the group is not necessarily stomping for bike lanes along Yonge Street. “We’ve been saying we’d like bike lanes in the Yonge Street corridor, but we’re not necessarily saying we need them on Yonge Street itself because we know that would upset some people,” he said. “It may make more sense to put them on Duplex (Avenue) or another street like that, but we definitely need a northsouth route.”

Brown noted there are some routes in the downtown core that provide relatively safe travel paths for cyclists, but he said contiguous routes are nonexistent, particularly coming from the north end of the city. “You have pretty good (bike lanes) on Beverley and St. George, and along Sherbourne up to Bloor,” he said. “On Poplar Plains to St. Clair, you can ride relatively safely, but there’s no straight line (of bike paths.)” He said hopes Bells on Yonge helps to draw attention – and crowds – to the issue of bike lanes, and noted that there has been some progress made in talks with city staff. “North of Sheppard, they’re looking at the possibility of putting lanes on Doris (Avenue) or Beecroft (Road), which would definitely help,” he said. Bells on Yonge started two years ago, as did sister ride Bells on Danforth. Organizers said they hope those two rides can grow to become as popular as Bells on Bloor, which drew between 1,500 and 2,000 people last year. “We’re hoping for about

100 people this year,” Brown said. “It’s a fun ride and we’re trying to get some publicity and raise the profile of the ride a bit.” The ride will kick off at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at the corner of Yonge and Hendon streets, just south of Finch station. A second start point will see riders depart from Duplex Parkette, a few blocks south of Lawrence Avenue, at 12:45 p.m., and yet more riders are expected to take off with the group from Ramsden Park at 1:30 p.m. Riders can join in at any point along the way en route to city hall. Bells on Bloor and Bells on Danforth will take place the same day, with all three rides ending at Bikestock, which kicks off at 2 p.m. at Nathan Phillips Square. “Bikestock’s a really fun event for cyclists – there will be plenty of activities and musical groups,” Brown said. For more information about Bells on Yonge, visit www.bellsonyonge.ca. For information on affiliated events, visit www.bellsonbloor.ca, www. bellsondanforth.ca or www. bikestock.ca

attended by frontrunner candidates Olivia Chow, Mayor Rob Ford, and John Tory, will Tues.

transit LRT dig nearly at Dufferin wCrosstown Tunnel borer machines (TBMs) excavating the west underground portion of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT have nearly reached Dufferin Street. About 2.5 kilometres of tunnelling is complete since the spring, with both “Dennis” and “Lea” digging underneath Eglinton Avenue West. They are expected to reach Allen Road by December, according to Metrolinx.

Once the machines reach Allen, they will be extracted and redeployed to Yonge Street, said Metrolinx senior executive Jack Collins. A second set of TBMs will tunnel from east

of the Don Valley toward Yonge Street. All tunnelling is expected to be done by late 2016 after which station construction can begin. ‘The Music Man’ a family favourite Tory, Ford adept Dungeon Masters The Civic Light-Opera Company’s new permanent home at the Zion Cultural Centre on Finch Avenue East proves to be up to the demands of accommodating a large-scale Broadway musical, in this case Meredith Willson’s Tony Award-winning hit The Music Man. First seen on Broadway in 1957, this musical comedy requires a large cast including six principal players, an ensemble of townspeople, a barbershop quartet and a chorus of children who can sing, dance and play instruments. It’s a tall order for any theatre company, but director Joe Cascone has come up with a winning produc-

mark andrew lawrence front row centre tion. Cascone takes on the title role of Professor Harold Hill who breezes into River City promising a band led by 76 trombones. His scheme is to collect payments for instruments, music books and uniforms and then skip town before anyone realizes there is no actual band. Cascone portrays Hill as a likable con man in order for the audience to not only stay with the story but to actually root for him in his relationship with the town music teacher and librarian, Marian Paroo. Marian is played by Judy

Judy Gans as Marian the Librarian, Joe Cascone as Professor Harold Hill and Koby Lee as Winthrop Paroo in ‘The Music Man, playing at Zion Cultural Centre, 1650 Finch Ave. E., through Sept. 21. For tickets, visit www. MusicTheatreToronto.com or call 416-755-1717.

Gans making a welcome return to musical theater performances. She gives the character a good deal of gumption, yet never loses sight of Marian’s romantic longings detailed nicely in her early solo Goodnight My Someone. As Marian’s loving but firm mother, Barbara Boddy supplies crackle with her tart-tongued responses yet also showing her softer side in a touching solo. As good as both Gans and Boddy are here, they are very nearly upstaged by Koby Lee as the lisping younger brother Winthrop. The Mayor of River City is played with amusing pomposity by Larry Westlake, with Louis Cascone as his cultureobsessed wife, Eulalie. It is great fun to watch these two argue. And speaking of fun, David Haines is on hand as Professor Hill’s well-meaning sidekick. The acoustics at Zion Cultural Centre allow the words – spoken and sung – to be heard clearly, and Sheila LaCasse’s period costumes add colour and zip to the proceedings. This is a great show for the whole family. Veteran theatre reviewer Mark Andrew Lawrence offers his insights on stage and musical productions for The North York Mirror. NEWSPAPER RETRACTION FOR THE FUTURE SHOP SEPTEMBER 5 CORPORATE FLYER In the September 5 flyer, page 17, the PS4 Destiny Console (WebID: 10207520) was advertised incorrectly. Please be advised that this product DOES NOT include a $10 PlayStation Store voucher.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers.

I never pegged Rob Ford and John Tory as the kind of kids who played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons in high school. Still, as a recovering Dungeons and Dragons über-nerd myself, I’ve got to say: both Ford and Tory would have made wicked Dungeon Masters. Armed with nothing but graph paper, some pencils and their unbridled imagination, both have come up with wonderful, fanciful maps that’ll keep parties of dungeon-crawlers busy for months – or, if they’re elected, years. Of the two transit dungeons, Ford’s is undeniably cooler. He’s drawn a veritable Minotaur’s maze of subway lines on his $9-billion plan to drive Torontonians underground: tunnels under Finch and Sheppard avenues, a dank catacomb for the Eglinton Crosstown light rail line, and a downtown relief passageway beneath Leslieville and Corktown. Although Ford hasn’t marked them on the map he sent out last week, one might expect more than a

david nickle the city few pit traps along that one. Tory’s plan is not technically a transit dungeon – Smart Track is all above ground – but the serpentine rail line wending through Scarborough, downtown Toronto and, if you listen to Olivia Chow, some living rooms in Etobicoke, is certainly sitting on a dragon’shorde of gold. Tory would have been the kind of Dungeon Master that made it easy for his players, letting them wander from level to level picking off under-fed goblins and picking up chests-full of gold and magic swords and rings as they went – ultimately, becoming a very popular Dungeon Master indeed. The trouble is that both Tory’s and Ford’s transit plans are asking voters to roll dice on very real schemes – schemes that are going to cost real money and plough through real neighbourhoods. The plans are probably a step up from the labyrinths

that teenage gamers sketch out after they’ve done their homework, but they are nearly as tentative. This week, when Chow called Tory on the physical impossibility of laying track along the route he sketched through Etobicoke, Tory admitted that, yes, he would dig a tunnel for that portion of his surface subway after all. And neither he nor Ford have provided much comfort in their financing plans – both relying on the unproven tax increment financing model to pay the very significant cost of those projects, and Ford floating a further range of financing mechanisms that a team of experts spent considerable energy definitively refuting during the Sheppard subway debate this term. Really, that shouldn’t surprise anyone. This kind of thing has always played much better over a long night in a suburban basement rec room than it does in the real world. Any übernerd could tell you that.

“ST. JUDE, we have problems in our relationship. Beg Almighty God to give us the light to see ourselves and each other as we really are. Help us to grow daily in self-knowledge and mutual love, well at the same time developing our potential to love and be loved. Help us, St. Jude, to see and root out every manifestation of selfishness, vanity, and childish selfseeking -those hidden enemies of love and maturity. Show us that by learning to love and being filled with love, we may compliment and nurture each other as we share our lives together.” Our Father, Hail Mary, and Gloria. Thank you St. Jude, Nicole.
