The outdoor adventure professional would lead outdoor adventures from snowshoeing and skiing in the winter, to paddling and hiking in the summer. Northview Heights teacher wins Governor General award fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com If Kathryn Whitfield had to sum up her teaching philosophy, she would quote historian John Hope Franklin: “We must get beyond textbooks… and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey.”

Getting beyond textbooks and doing hands-on exploring is exactly what the Northview Heights Secondary School students in her Grade 10 Canadian history class do.

A n d h e r i n n ov a t i v e approach to teaching has earned her the 2015 Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching. She is one of six winners – and the only one from Ontario.

Now in its 19th year, the award recognizes the outstanding contributions of Canada’s history and social studies teachers, ranging from elementary grades through

high school. Winners will travel to Ottawa in October to receive medals presented

by Gov. Gen. David Johnston at Rideau Hall.

Whitfield was recognized for a project she developed for students called the Historical Thinking Missions Project, which focused on a particular area of the city in the early 1900s.

The project saw students conducting historical research and field work to learn about the history of the former St. John’s ward, which is bounded by College Street, Yonge Street, Queen Street and University Avenue, focusing on how the community has changed over the years, yet at the same time, how it has remained the same.

ance maps, tax assessment records and census data. They also took part in a field study in the neighbourhood and imagined what life would have been like in the ward in 1912. Students were then required to create projects

to commemorate who and what they felt was historically significant in the ward, which could have been in the form of plaques, guided walking tours and monuments.

Due to the assignment falling during winter last year,

she altered the project slightly while teaching at Northview by having students do in-class field work and creating an online historical thinking walking tour in the former St. John’s ward to educate and inform potential walkers about its history, its residents and buildings of significance, she said, adding students used technology to create tour pamphlets featuring archival photographs, descriptions of historical spaces and maps for walkers to follow.

“It’s one the most authentic learning experiences they could have,” Whitfield said.

“The students were super engaged.”

For historical field work during her time at Vaughan Road Academy, she handed students old photos and using various maps and data had them find what was currently at the locations. They then had to snap pictures of themselves while holding

the old photos. She also had students investigate certain intersections to see what was there in 1912 compared to the present.

“One student was super upset because so many homes were displaced and a plaque at Old City Hall didn’t acknowledge that,” Whitfield said.

She noted the project’s location is irrelevant, and can be used to investigate Vancouver’s historic Gastown, or Africville in Halifax.

Whitfield is also the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012, the Toronto District School Board Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011, was a nominee for the Premier’s Award for Teaching Excellence and Excellence in Leadership in 2011 and 2012 and a Top 25 finalist for the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2006.

Seniors deserve a nation-wide care strategy T aking care of an aging senior can be a heavy burden, particularly when they’re suffering from a complex health issue.

It’s a day-to-day struggle for families and individual caregivers, but it’s also about to become a massive problem for our province and country.

According to the Canadian Medical Association, our senior population is about to double in the next 20 years and the 85 and older age group will quadruple.

Health-care issues will similarly increase, including cases of dementia.

The latest numbers from the Alzheimer Society of Canada show that 14.9 per cent of Canadians 65 and older are currently living with our view dementia. That’s projected to jump by 47 per cent in just 16 We are facing years.

This warning was delivered an impending to the editors at Metroland wave of dementia Media earlier this year by mental health professionals and it’s the reason we undertook a special investigative series on seniors and dementia, publishing this week.

We heard the difficult stories. A husband who can’t leave home with his once-perfect match because his wife now behaves like an unruly five year old. Brilliant minds, once highly respected in their fields, struggling with simple daily tasks. Children of aging parents with dementia crippled by the financial cost of quality health care. South Asian families giving up their livelihood to care for a parent at home because they’re too culturally shamed to put them in a long-term care home or even admit they have dementia.

We’re putting a spotlight on the issue – the challenges that currently exist in addressing the coming wave, but also the efforts made so far, the innovations being developed and the positive stories that offer hope for our future.

Canada needs a long-term strategy for senior health care and dementia, one that takes into account the perspectives of people currently affected by the disease and establishes sufficient funding to offer quality care. With the federal election only weeks away, it’s the perfect time to apply pressure on policy makers.

The good and the bad of term limits Seasoned councillors have value...

I

t should hardly come as a surprise that Beaches-East York Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon wasn’t able to summon more than a smidgen of support for her motion to place term limits on municipal politicians.

Being a city councillor in Toronto, after all, is a good gig.

Governing the largest city in the country provides interesting and varied work for the diligent.

For the vainglorious, there are plenty of opportunities to see oneself on television, hear oneself on the radio, read about oneself in the newspaper.

For the opportunistic,

david nickle the city there are other perquisites like travel and nights out at the film festival and ball games.

And for everyone seeking to pay off a mortgage in Toronto’s overvalued real estate market, there’s a six-figure salary attached.

For the cynical, that’s enough to explain the vote at executive committee on McMahon’s motion Monday to ask that term limits be included in revisions to the City of Toronto Act. But there are good arguments for keeping councillors past their best-before date.

Toronto is a complicated government, and it makes sense that at least a few of its overseers should be well-schooled in its operations.

Given that there are no

... but not all politicians are created equal

formal requirements that a candidate for council go to councillor school before taking the job, it is essential that at least a few council members are able to contribute their experience and understanding of the place.

Indeed, some of council’s most reliable members are its veterans: people like Shelly Carroll, Norm Kelly, Pam McConnell and Denzil Minnan-Wong.

Before he stepped down, veteran councillor Howard Moscoe was able to play city hall like a well-tuned instrument that, if you agreed with his progressive politics, you’d count that a good thing.

The trouble, of course,

is that not all veterans are created equal.

Giorgio Mammoliti by way of example has been a city councillor since 1995, and in that time made a name for himself primarily as a showboater and class clown. Yet he has proven himself undefeatable in his ward, such being the power of incumbency. He is not the only one.

It is useful to wonder, then, just how much value would we lose on city council if it were made up more completely of other bright lights – people like Kristyn Wong-Tam, Josh Matlow, Mike Layton, Josh Colle come to mind – who are working in their second term?

And what would we gain in having a cadre of councillors who were treating the job as a short stretch of public service rather than a long-term career choice?

The one-day event, which included a silent auction, musical performances, baked goods and a book sale, raised $6,000 for Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) for their relief efforts for refugees in Syria.

“It’s an exciting thing for me, how the event really raised consciousness of global issues,” Maynard said, adding a similar fundraiser raised $8,000 in 2007 for earthquake victims in Haiti. “Syria is around the world, but it impacts us at home. Yes, the event was about fundraising, but it was also about raising awareness as global citizens.”

The same day as the fundraiser, Seneca’s president David Agnew announced the college will fund full tuition for 10 refugees from Syria to study at the campuses, whether it be diploma, degree or certificate courses.

“With the fundraiser (recently), we thought we would do what we do – offer 10 full bursaries,” he said.

The college will work with sponsors and settlement agencies to offer the bursaries, Agnew said, adding to his knowledge, this marks the first

Uber users petition city to make rideshare company a legal service Thousands have signed an online petition in support of Uber.

As of Monday, the petition had almost 25,000 names calling for Toronto council to vote for regulation of the private rideshare company’s operations so that it’s considered a legal service. The company’s rampant popularity – 20,000 new users join per week according to recent figures provided by Uber – has come at the expense of cab companies who say they can’t fairly compete.

Council will consider the issue at its Sept. 30 meeting.

York U grad showcases her work

TRADE ACCELERATOR PROGRAM

Toronto artist Charmaine Lurch and graduate of York University is showcasing an exhibit of paint and sculpture installations at the Toronto Centre for the Arts in North York.

The exhibit, titled Conversations In Flux, will be on display in the Lower Gallery of the arts centre, 5040 Yonge St. until Oct. 9.

Lurch is an arts researcher, interdisciplinary visual artist and an award-winning arts educator.

The exhibit features three multimedia, multidimensional installations, which animate evidence of a visible black presence in North America.

The three installations are called Blueprint for a Black and Visible Carriage, The Phenomenal Henrietta Lacks and Revisiting Sycorax.

Lurch has had work on display and participated in shows at the Royal Ontario Museum, Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, The University of British Colombia, and the National Gallery of

Every time a person tans, they expose themselves to the disease, she said.

The woman began her battle about two years ago, when she was working at an outdoor education camp in Hong Kong. Half a year into her stint in Hong Kong, she felt a lump on the left side of her neck, near her collarbone. With cancer history in the family, she went to see a doctor, who removed the lump at that visit and within 24 hours she was diagnosed.

Her parents flew to Hong Kong, where she got CAT scans that revealed five tumors on the left side of her neck. She returned to Canada, where surgeons removed 63 lymph nodes, 11 of which were tumorous and then she started radiation.

When her cancer was discovered, it was Stage 3, but it later travelled to her lungs and liver, becoming Stage 4 melanoma.

stage cancer,” Douglas said.

As scary as the disease is, Douglas said she wants people to know melanoma is preventable and curable.

She said treatments have advanced during her time battling it.

“Up until two or three years ago,

Stage 4 melanoma was like a death sentence,” she said. “It’s a really aggressive form of cancer. As of last week, I got a clear scan. The disease that had spread to my lungs and my liver responded to the drugs. I had maybe a 12 per cent chance it would.

Am I cured? Not really.

But this is the best, I think, that it’s going to get.

I want to give the message there is hope. The technology and medicine is advancing so quickly.”

She had been placed on a trial drug, called MEK162, which shrunk the tumors in her organs by about 30 per cent. When her body developed an immunity to the drug after about six months, she was placed on Yervoy, which restarted her immune system, so her body would fight the cancer off on its own, which it did.

“Am I cured? Not really. But this is the best, I think, that it’s going to get. There is a chance it will come back. It is a cancer. My odds of being no evidence of disease for the next three years is about 85 per cent and that’s really good.”

She got through her battle by staying positive, but realistic. She stayed busy, received lots of love and

support of her family and friends, and relied on Netflix. Through the journey, her husband Justin Douglas was there. They met just after she had finished her radiation treatments. She told him she had cancer early on in their relationship and he stayed with her the entire ride. They spent more time together at the doctor’s office than at the movies.

“That was the reality of our relationship. He’s only known cancer Caroline. He didn’t know me before I was diagnosed,” Douglas said. “This is what has become my life. He chose to be part of it. He chose to embrace the crap that goes with cancer, and for that I see him as my hero.”

Douglas will be walking with her husband and their family and friends at the Strides for Melanoma Walk Sunday at Sunnybrook Park, 1132 Leslie St. Registration opens at 9 a.m., with the walk at 10 a.m.

DEMENTIA ADVISORY GROUP GIVES A VOICE TO THOSE AFFECTED

A fervent group of people living with dementia is out to prove life does not end with a diagnosis.

The Ontario Dementia Advisory Group (ODAG) was formed in 2014 with the purpose of giving people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias a voice in shaping Ontario’s healthcare policy.

The five-member group is erasing the assumption that people living with dementia are unable to communicate their needs, wants and perspectives. They are working with the provincial government to develop an Ontario dementia strategy that will impact the province’s aging population.

Mary Beth Wighton is a retired owner of a recruiting firm. She was diagnosed with probable frontotemporal dementia in 2012 at age 45. As a member of ODAG, she shares the triumphs and challenges she faces with her partner and daughter through writing and speaking engagements. Here’s what she has to say:

1.4 MILLION PEOPLE As the Canadian population ages, we are seeing a growth in the country’s dementia problem.

In 2011, 747,000 Canadians were living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias - that’s 14.9 per cent of Canadians 65 and older.

Here are some stats that show how the dementia burden on Canadian society will begin to accelerate:

By 2031: If nothing changes, 1.4 million people will have dementia in Canada - a 47 per cent increase from 2011 levels.

Today, the combined direct (medical) and indirect (lost earnings) costs of dementia total $33 billion per year.

By 2040: That’s expected to climb to $293 billion a year, if Canada maintains its current path.

In 2011, family caregivers spent in excess of 444 million unpaid hours looking after someone with cognitive impairment, including dementia.

This figure represents $11 billion in lost income and 227,760 full-time equivalent employees in the workforce.

By 2040: Family caregivers could spend 1.2 billion unpaid hours per year.

Since 2006, the government has invested more than $860 million in support of neuroscience research, allotting $182 million for the prevention, diagnosis and care of dementia.

However, Lowi-Young said more needs to be done.

A national strategy would ensure someone living in Northern Ontario would receive the same kind of service as someone in Vancouver, B.C. She said objectives of the national strategy should include more investment and focus in research, better integration, co-ordination and accessibility of primary, community and home-care across the country, improved training of health-care workers and better supports for family caregivers.

The ASC has requested a total of $150 million over five years to create and fund the Canadian Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Partnership, which would bring together researchers, Alzheimer societies and federal and provincial governments to develop and implement a Canadawide plan.

“We need to take these objectives and make them real,” Lowi-Young said. “We need to prepare now. We can’t wait for the future.”

In November 2014, Premier Kathleen Wynne and Health Minister Eric Hoskins mandated Indira Naidoo-Harris, the Halton MPP and parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Health and Long Term Care, to develop a comprehensive Ontario dementia strategy.

“It’s critical we start planning for our future today. It’s going to involve research, supports for caregivers and care partners, but it’s also going to involve educating people,” NaidooHarris said in an interview.

Her mandate includes championing more research and innovation to better understand the disease, supporting the implemen-

tation of 25 new memory clinics across Ontario (designed for early dementia detection and prevention), and working across levels of government and agencies to identify ways to expand supports to family caregivers.

The politician watched her fatherin-law battle Alzheimer’s and calls it an “extremely painful and emotionally draining” experience.

“It was very hard for our family to sit by and watch one of the smartest men that we knew slowly lose the ability to speak and express himself,” she said.

An advisory board of more than 30 experts has been formed to bring together key stakeholders from Alzheimer societies, the Ontario Long Term Care Association, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and community care access centres, among

David Harvey, chief of public policy and programs initiative for the Alzheimer Society of Ontario, is part of that board and said it is critical to have people at the table who are experiencing dementia first-hand.

“Our focus has been developing a strategy that enables persons living with dementia to have a voice in articulating what their needs are and what the solutions might be moving forward,” he said.

The Ontario Dementia Advisory Group (ODAG) consists of people living with dementia whose motto is “nothing about us without us.”

They have been working with Naidoo-Harris on the Ontario strategy and will help government create policies and procedures through first-hand perspectives.

ODAG member Bea Kraayenhof is a retired nurse who has been living with Alzheimer’s disease for 15 years.

She said dementia should not be politicized and that Ontario needs to prepare for the “tsunami” by implementing a set of rules for long-term care homes and health-care agencies to follow.

“The people in government now making the policies will be the ones living those policies,” she said. “If they’re lucky enough to live long, it’s probably going to happen to them.”

Families need more support to keep loved ones with dementia at home Beverly Verwey believes home is where the heart should stay.

In 2007, she gave her mother, Betty, the option to move into a retirement home or to live with her in her Newmarket home. Betty chose the latter.

Verwey watched her mother’s early signs of dementia progress to the point where Betty no longer recognized her daughter.

Betty became blind and was later diagnosed with breast cancer.

In 2012, Verwey retired early from her job with the Canadian Red Cross to stay home and take care of Betty. The local Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) provided 12 hours per week of personal support worker (PSW) help.

She had a front row seat to gaps in the home care system, and noticed inconsistencies in PSWs’ implementation of her mother’s daily exercise routine, a critical component to her physical and mental health.

“The family caregivers need some sort of respite,” she said. “They have to trust that the support worker they’re leaving their loved one with is going to do the right thing.”

She believes students in college PSW programs need more time in the classroom and doing clinical work.

“The PSWs take a four-month course, then they have a short practical part where they work in a long-term care home,” she said.

She said an occasional evaluation of PSWs’ skills, attitude and work ethic needs to be implemented.

According to Verwey, an overhaul of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is needed: “Funding, tools and resources from the government should be allocated to families who are keeping their family member at home.”

Betty died in January 2014 at the age of 94.

New mural trumpets environment Students from the Thorncliffe and Flemingdon neighbourhoods have created a mural at Valley Park Middle School encouraging environmental stewardship.

Unveiled Monday, the mural was designed and painted by local youths with mentorship from celebrated local artist Nick Sweetman, in collaboration with The STEPS Initiative.

Titled In Our Hands, the mural is meant to speak to the legacy of the Don River and beautify the space. It includes four sections of 8x15-feet each.

University Women’s Club hosts meetings ALI RAZA scm@insidetoronto.com It’s a place where women can meet to work together and help their community.

The University Women’s Club of North York, one of many groups across Canada under the umbrella of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), is one such place.

Founded in 1951 and originally for degree-holding women, the club now boasts 220 members with the degree requirement dropped. Women gather to hear guest speakers, participate in social groups, advocate education and human rights, and provide scholarships to women and girls in the community.

“We are committed to improving the status of women and girls,” said communications coordinator Barbara Betts, a Scarborough resident.

“To promote quality

public education and to advance the status of women, human rights, justice and peace.”

UWCNY has a fall program planned involving general meetings once a month with guest speakers over a variety of topics.

On Sept. 28, Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre representatives Brock Godfrey and Carol Gilmore will speak about mass marketing fraud, identity theft, romance scams and how to avoid such frauds.

Dr. Ritika Goel, part of an inner-city family health team, will speak about how social detriments can impact health Oct. 26.

On Nov. 30, social justice lawyer Joanna Birenbau will speak about equality rights, violence against women and issues faced by indigenous women.

These meetings will take place at the St. Bonaventure Parish Centre at 1300 Leslie St. During these months there are also several

interest and study groups for members.

“There’s arts appreciation, arts around Toronto, book clubs, bridge clubs, food groups, French groups, games, global concerns, knitting, life skills, movies, reading and much more,” Betts said.

The North York club has charitable trusts that provide bursaries and scholarships to women at various North York high schools and universities.

The membership is $110 for the year with part of the money going to the scholarship fund. UWCNY also supports the North York Women’s Shelters and other community organizations.
