York U. contract faculty talks continue CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Negotiations between York University and the union representing contract faculty and teaching assistants are ongoing after union members voted in favour of a strike mandate last week. More than 40 per cent of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 3903’s 3,700 members cast ballots with nearly 80 per cent voting for a strike mandate. “We held this strike vote to show the employer that our members are serious about improving the quality of education at York,” said Faiz Ahmed, chair of CUPE 3903, which also represents graduate assistants and research assistants. After the most recent meeting Monday between the university and the union with the assistance of a provincially appointed conciliator, Ahmed noted there has been some
progress. “We’re happy to report that there’s movement,” said Ahmed, noting they’ve been trying to negotiate since late September with the union’s contract having expired on Aug. 31. One of the primary issues is about the teaching conditions at York, said Ahmed, noting that while contract faculty perform more than 60 per cent of teaching, it represents about eight per cent of the university’s total operating budget. He explained the issue isn’t centred around wages, but rather focused on working towards “guaranteeing Professor X will teach Course Y for a guaranteed period of time.” Another issue he noted is the “differential fees for international students”, which aren’t regulated like they are for domestic students. Ahmed said that about a year-and-a-half ago, tuition fees for some international
students increased by more than 50 per cent, which affects many of the graduating, teaching and research assistants in the union who come from abroad. “These are cutting-edge thinkers, people who will be contributing to society,” he said. In its latest statement released Saturday, the university said it remained confident renewed collective agreements can be reached without any disruption. “The university recognizes and fully understands the concerns of our students and the importance of being able to continue with their studies,” the statement read. Ahmed said the union also expressed hope an agreement would be reached sooner than later with more meetings scheduled in the coming weeks.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to northyorkmirror.com for updates.
Wrigley is shutting down its North York gum factory, which will see almost 400 jobs eliminated. The closure at 1123 Leslie St. is set for March 2016 and will impact 383 workers, Wrigley said in a statement released Tuesday. The company, which produces, among others, Excel, Extra, Hubba Bubba and Juicy Fruit, cited a decline in gum purchases in recent years for the shut down. “Today we regret having to announce a tough decision that impacts a number of our great Canadian associates,” the statement read. “Despite recent improvements in the gum category and increased productivity in our supply chain network, it has not been enough to offset declines in the gum category over recent years... we will continue to operate a Wrigley Canada head office and invest in our Canadian business, including Excel, Canada’s number one gum brand.” Production from the soonto-be-closed Toronto site will be moved to Gainesville, Georgia. The statement thanked the Toronto employees for their “outstanding service” and will offer severance packages, career transition support, and paid time off to attend job interviews and counselling.

elp build the Pan Am Path and create a living legacy for the city of Toronto. The 84-kilometre trail promises to connect communities literally and figuratively across the Toronto region and may be our best souvenir from the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. Though it’s the dead of winter, now’s the time to get involved. Workshops hosted by the many partner organizations are starting to take place to help build various installations meant to celebrate our diversity. Lakeshore Arts in Etobicoke, for example, will begin public workshops this month to create unique flags banners for part of the path our view and that “explore themes of home, identity and community stories.” Trail will The workshops aim to bring people together across genconnect all erations and cultures and is representative of the kind of colof Toronto laboration the path is meant to inspire. Check in with partner groups Urban Arts, Arts Etobicoke, East End Arts, Scarborough Arts and North York Arts for other local opportunities. Stretching from the Claireville Reservoir in the northwest, down the Humber River, across the Martin Goodman Trail to the Don River and northeast to Rouge Park, the Pan Am Path’s installation and associated programs aim to engage and leverage diversity by showcasing the communities that exist along the route. It’s a great chance for many of our Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (NIA) to get involved through the launch of the Path – which touches seven of the city’s 17 NIAs – and ongoing stewardship to ensure its future sustainability. The Path also aims to promote healthy living by filling in the gaps in our trail system and improving the public spaces found within. The multiuse trail, once complete, has the potential to become a regional landmark that could raise the profile of the city for its own residents and tourists alike. No matter your opinion of the Games, this project is a great example of people coming together to celebrate diversity and create a lasting legacy that’s accessible to all Torontonians. It’s bridging cultures and geography, providing a physical connection between our outer suburbs and the downtown core. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of it.

February is sweet, but a little too short
A
s far as months go, February is my fave. For starters, being only 28 days and all, I’ve always thought it as being the cutest month. I just want to give it a big hug when it shows up and then fawn all over it the way everybody does with a precious little baby in a stroller. “You’re so cute February, yes you are. You are, aren’t you? You know you are, don’t you? And you know why you are? Because you are.” What can I say? I can’t help myself. But it’s more than just the small number of days that makes February so appealing; it’s what happens on a few of them that oozes the same delightful quality. Kicking off the month is the ever popular Groundhog Day festivities. It’s one eye-catching moment after another. The ever bubbly officials in tuxedos and top hats oversee-
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY ing the ceremonies get the affair off and rolling. The acrobatic groundhogarazzi all around eagerly capturing the moment on camera add to the atmosphere. Then comes the much anticipated arrival of the furry stars of the hour: the irresistible Punxsutawney Phil and Wiarton Willie take centre stage. Whether they see their shadows or don’t see their shadows isn’t the only important news of the day. Deserving of equal billing at the event is that there’s never a shadow of a doubt that a good time has been had by all. What’s more, just like February itself, whenever I see those two adorable celebrities I just want to give them both a big hug and fawn all over them, too. “You’re so cute Phil, yes you are. You’re so cute,
Willie, yes you are. You are, aren’t you? You know you are, don’t you? And you know why you are? Because you are.” Next up is Valentine’s Day smack dab in the middle of the month. It always warms the heart and there’s a lot of equally darling moments associated with it. Like when you watch close friends fretting over what to get for a serious new love in their lives. They bombard you with a zillion questions for weeks leading up to the big day. What do I buy? How much should I spend? Are flowers and chocolates and dinner enough? Should I get clothes? What about jewelry? Or does it have to be flowers, chocolates, dinner, clothes and jewelry? Their nervous behaviour is priceless. Whenever I listen to one of them worrying away like that I just want to give them a hug and fawn all over them, too. “You’re so cute Bubba,
yes you are. You are, aren’t you? You know you are, don’t you? And you know why you are? Because you are.” Then there’s the most recent welcome addition to the month, Family Day, which has really taken off and keeps growing every year. The icing on the cake of Family Day? Stat pay. Talk about pleasing sights! OK, I will: “You’re so cute, stat pay, yes you are. You are, aren’t you? You know you are, don’t you? And you know why you are? Because you are.” Saving the best for last, the number one reason I love February the most? It’s when my mom was born. On Feb. 21. It’s my favourite day of my favourite month. And just like the month itself, the day always goes by way too fast. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. National honours for Tamara Grealis, one of four Toronto principals awarded >>>from page 1 the people who nominated her for the honour included the office administrator, teachers and students, a former superintendent, and a local pastor. “I feel like they make me look good,” Grealis said. “I work with great people.” The veteran educator has been principal of Georges Vanier, located near Don Mills Road and Finch Avenue, since February 2011. She previously served as vice-principal at Earl Haig Secondary School in North York and Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute in Scarborough. Grealis continued to attribute much of her success as a principal to the people she’s in contact with on a day-today basis.
“I’ve watched a lot of teachers grow in their leadership,” said Grealis, adding implementing any plans to move the school forward is done as a team. She also spoke highly of the students at Georges Vanier who represent a very diverse school population. “I have the best students in the board,” said Grealis, noting they take a lot of initiative themselves including starting a girls’ and boys’ summit to discuss such issues as healthy relationships and gender bias. “I love interacting with the students, popping my head in the classrooms and just walking down the hall.” One of the important things to do as a principal, she said, is getting to hear everyone’s
voice and to receive feedback from staff and students before the decisions are made. “I try to be very approachable and very visible,” Grealis said. “And a sense of humour is really important in this job.” Education director Donna Quan applauded Grealis and the three other Toronto District School Board principals recognized as an outstanding principal this year, who “work tirelessly to ensure the academic success and well-being of students and are the heart and soul of school communities.” The 40 principals will formally receive their awards at The Learning Partnership’s 1 1 t h a n n u a l C a n a d a’s Outstanding Principal Gala on Feb. 24.

AGA KHAN PERFORMANCE SERIES A SHOWCASE OF GLOBAL MUSLIM INFLUENCE
Photo/COURTESY
DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The Aga Khan Museum has launched the second half of its inaugural performing arts series that showcases the global reach of the Muslim culture. The winter and spring series will feature artists from India, Iran, Siberia, China, Canada and elsewhere. “We’re looking at the entire breadth of where Muslim civilizations and cultures have either, historically or in contemporary times, been present or had an influence in culture, especially in the arts,” said Amirali Alibhai, head of performing arts at the museum. The series looks at arts cultures from a wide area, including the Iberian Peninsula in Spain to China, and south to Africa and Indonesia and north to Siberia. “The point of this program is to demonstrate the actual diversity or start to transmit the diversity of where Muslim civilizations have had influence or relationships in the past,” Alibhai said. He said cultural influence can really be heard in music, whether you’re listening to traditional cultural music or contemporary forms.
Diversity of Muslim culture at the heart of theatrical show The 2015 season of international film and performing arts began Jan. 28 with the film series called Cinematic Discoveries Along the Silk Road and the Spice Route. The series runs over several Wednesdays until April 8, featuring work from accomplished international filmmakers and emerging media artists working in the Middle East, East and South Asia, and Africa, which the museum refers to as areas connected through the Silk Road and Spice Route. “The film series will be a voyage of discovery for audiences,” said Dr. Paul Lee, a Scarborough filmmaker and producer who guest curated the film series, in a news release. A number of live performances by accomplished international artists will continue into May,

starting with pipa player Wu Man and singer Sanubar Tursun Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14. The series features music, dance, spoken word, jam sessions and the film series. Some of the work carries similar themes to the museum’s ongoing exhibits, including the Lost Dhow, which continues to April 26, and Visions of Mughal India, which opens Feb. 21, or it is in line with the museum’s mission to create an understanding between cultures. Alibhai said this series will present a unique opportunity for people to see acclaimed and accomplished artists and performing arts disciplines that are rarely seen locally. Alibhai said the shows will be accessible to everyone. “This will be new to a lot of audiences, but I’m trying to make sure that the music doesn’t need translation, literally, in order for it to be enjoyable and moving and touching,” he said. The theatre is intimate, with 336 seats, designed for the performing arts. “This is a very respectful and comfortable space. The building itself is inspiring to artists and makes the visitor experience really unique,” Alibhai said.

Transit ‘leprechaun’ have returned wmay Did the transit “leprechaun” strike the TTC again? That’s exactly what’s said to have happened when an irate man refused to leave a packed bus during rushhour Friday at Pape Station. He had a striking resemblance to the green-clad, long-bearded, bowler hatwearing individual whose actions created a social media outcry last fall. According to social media posts, which were later corroborated by the TTC, the man would not leave the bus or remove his bike from the vehicle’s front-facing rack, despite being told there was no room, causing TTC supervisors and police to be summoned. It appears this is the same man dubbed the ‘transit leprechaun’ who in November was accused of acting belligerently toward another TTC rider. SNOW HALTS SOME TTC, GO TRAIN SERVICE Our wild winter weather played havoc with TTC and GO Transit service.
w
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT Monday’s winter storm, which left some 20 centimetres of snow throughout the Greater Toronto Area, forced the TTC to pull some of its older streetcars from a few routes and replace them with buses, on the very day the transit commission’s board approved a fare hike for 2015. GO riders, who also saw their fares go up this month, suffered several train cancellations that the regional transit provider attributed to frozen track switches caused by extreme cold. is SPADINA EXTENSION ON TRACK TO OPEN? The TTC will soon know if long-standing construction delays will again postpone the opening of the TorontoYork Spadina Subway Extension. The six-stop extension of the Spadina line traveling north from Downsview Station has already delayed its opening until fall 2016.
w
But faced with station construction issues at some sites, TTC CEO Andy Byford said at Monday’s budget meeting he’s hired consulting company Bechtel Ltd. to report on whether the 2016 date is still realistic. STATION MAP gets complaints wDownsview
A station map in the Downsview bus concourse was taken down this week by TTC staff after users of the social media site Reddit pointed out its uncanny resemblance to a penis. The map, installed in December, was supposed to show riders where they can catch a bus from the station at Allen Road and Sheppard Avenue East. But according to media reports, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said the design wasn’t properly approved and should never have been installed. A new map bearing no resemblance to genitalia has been placed in the concourse. Rahul Gupta is the Mirror’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

TTC board backs spending increase RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A package of service improvements promised by the TTC took a positive step forward following approval of the commission’s fiscal budgets for 2015. The board voted unanimously to approve the TTC and Wheel-Trans operating and capital budgets, with some amendments, which adds more than $95 million in spending including improved express and latenight service, the purchase of more buses, a temporary bus garage and the hiring of hundreds of more TTC staff. Also approved was a move to make all TTC service free to kids aged 12 and under. To help pay for the improvements, the budget also includes a 10-cent increase to non-cash fares, and a sharp increase to the price of a monthly Metropass. While the board’s decision doesn’t make the budgets official – it still needs approval from the city budget committee, the mayor’s executive and finally council as a whole for that to happen – it gives the plan momentum ahead of the legislative battles to come, said TTC chair Josh Colle. “This budget is a real response to what we’ve heard from riders and I’m hoping councillors on the budget and executive committee and council will realize too what’s at stake, and will actually give riders what they need and want,” said Colle following Monday’s marathon budget meeting at city hall. TTC CEO Andy Byford said Monday’s budget deliberations were the most important of his three-year tenure with the TTC. “It was obvious to me we had a compelling case and we’d done our homework, that the figures added up. The actual numbers made sense and were justifiable and defensible,” he said. The board meeting started around 9:30 a.m. and continued well into afternoon with little pause aside from a noon-hour lunch break. The nine board members – civilian commissioners Anju Virmani and Nick Di Donato were absent – also heard from a succession of transit users pleading to reverse course on the fare hike. Deputants organized by activists from the transit advocacy group TTCriders took turns telling the board how even a modest fare increase will have undue hardship on people on fixed incomes. Helen Liu, bolstered by some 50 supporters from the Ontario Chinese Seniors Association, warned another fare hike would force many seniors in poverty to forego TTC use or face not
having enough money for food. “Even 10 cents more is a big deal,” said Liu to the board. As part of the budget approvals the board also agreed to a series of amendments proposed by TTC commissioner Joe Mihevc. Mihevc’s motions called for a more transparent budgetary process, petitioning the provincial government
to restore operational funding to the TTC and reaffirming the goal of providing discounted fares to lowincome earners. All measures were approved unanimously. Another motion by Mihevc calling on the TTC to permit charities and social service agencies to make bulk purchases of transit tokens or tickets at last year’s prices, passed by
a majority with Denzil Minnan-Wong and Alan Heisey the only commissioners opposed. The move will add $60,000 to the TTC’s expenditures for the year, said Mihevc. The board also approved a motion from Shelley Carroll for the TTC to draft a campaign along with city staff for better provincial transit funding.

Public library security guard cuts to be less severe Cuts to security guards looking after Toronto Public Library branches will be less dramatic than originally put forward by the Toronto Public Library Board. The board had been proposing to cut $660,000 from the budget for security guards, resulting in a 40 per cent reduction in security services
at branches across the city. The move would have meant that four district libraries and numerous community branches would have been without security guards. On Jan. 26, the city’s budget committee heard that staff at the library and the city had reached a compromise and the reduction
to the budget was reduced to just $200,000. The new move means that nine community branches will no longer have full-time security, but will still have access to the service when needed. The affected branches include Jane-Sheppard and Downsview.
Increase in winter coyote sightings to be expected The City of Toronto is advising people an increase in coyote sightings in the city during the winter months is normal and to be expected. This is especially the case for those who live near ravines and forests, which are typical coyote habitat. People can expect increased sightings of coyotes in winter for the following reasons: w It is easier to spot coyotes in parks and ravines in the winter because they are not hidden by foliage. w Coyotes are wary by nature and are more comfortable roaming in residential neighbourhoods when fewer people are outside. w The months of January and February are mating season for coyotes. As coyotes are more active during this time, they become more visible. Further, coyotes are active in the day and night but prefer to hunt after dusk or before dawn. They’re normally shy but out of natural curiosity coyotes may watch or follow humans. Feeding them makes the animals less fearful of humans. Minimize negative encounters To minimize negative encounters with coyotes, residents are advised to avoid feeding coyotes or other wild animals; avoid feeding domestic pets outdoors; ensure all household garbage is inaccessible to animals; place garbage at the curb on the morning of the scheduled pickup, rather than the night before; always supervise pets – keep dogs on a leash and keep cats indoors or supervised when outside; and remove dense brush and weeds around property to minimize hiding spots for coyotes. Anyone who encounters a coyote is advised to wave their arms, make loud noises and throw objects in its direction to scare it away. These actions teach coyotes to be afraid of humans and will help to minimize conflicts. If the animal is not scared away, people should slowly back away from the coyote – avoid turning your back or running away. Like dogs, coyotes may give chase if you run. -Joanna Lavoie

Tory right to have his say on subject of possible Toronto school closures Watching the early months of John Tory’s mayoralty after having watched four years of his predecessor is to constantly be amazed, often at very small things that in a saner environment wouldn’t amaze anybody. The mayor arrives at work before 7 in the morning? He answers questions put to him? These things shouldn’t be a shock, but they are. On Tuesday morning, Tory did it again. Upon reading reports on the possibility that schools deemed surplus by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) might be sold, Tory drafted a threepage, densely argued letter to both the public and Catholic school board chairs as well as the province’s minister of education, Liz Sandals. One can imagine how Rob Ford might have handled that issue, which is to say, not at all, unless perhaps he’d gotten a call from a group of neighbours convinced their local school was going to be overtaken by
david nickle the city the disabled... or if someone convinced him it had to do with intramural football. Tory’s letter addresses a rat’s nest of a problem of overcapacity and under-funding that the TDSB is facing: how to deal with schools that are operating far below capacity. It’s a problem the board has faced since the amalgamation of Toronto in 1998, when it was forced to confront a provincial funding formula that penalized unused capacity and encouraged closures of schools that were under-populated. The formula has been problematic for Toronto, because the city has a long history of finding utility in its school properties beyond their educational purpose. It is also a problem because Toronto is by no means a stable community. Population ebbs and flows and the city is
planning for more flow into its neighbourhoods. It is an even bigger rat’s nest because as much as there’s been co-operation between school boards and municipalities, Toronto politicians and planners have few direct ways to see those resources preserved. The city can purchase surplus schools, and has done so in the past to preserve public uses or mitigate environmental impacts. But that’s an expensive proposition. Tory’s attempt to delicately insert himself and the city into the process might be a foolhardy one; as he admitted in his letter, it is none of the city’s fiduciary business. But it is a pleasant shock to see a mayor who understands the value of publicly owned assets to both established and growing communities. That was another thing the other fellow never understood.

‘Remember, Maggy?’ not easily forgettable Encore Entertainment is offering local audiences a second chance to see a truly wonderful and original play. In Remember, Maggy? Kate Winfield is a middleaged widow caring for her aged and forgetful mother. When her sister, Maggy Donovan, a television actress, arrives for a visit old wounds and tension erupt. Kate has sacrificed a great deal to tend to their ailing mother while the self-centered Maggy barely has time for the old woman. Fortunately Kate has support from a kindhearted neighbour, Irene Farmer, who is all agog at meeting her favourite TV star but her fawning over Maggy grates on both sisters. In time Irene helps Kate realize that Maggy is not able to give her the assistance she needs, which leads to a bitter confrontation. The four actresses bring these characters to brilliant life, creating dis-
mark andrew lawrence front row centre tinct and fully believable characterizations. While much of that is due to a fine and sensitive script, some credit must be given to director Jerrold Karch. He guides the play with an invisible hand, allowing everything to play quite naturally. Carmel Warman is the mother, Neve Ryan. Her painful partial recollections of the night she lost her husband are beautifully and movingly acted. Anyone who has lost a family member to Alzheimer’s will immediately empathize. Barbara Clifford gives an achingly insightful performance as Kate, the devoted daughter who is letting her own life slip away under the burden of caring for her mother. Allyson Landy brings fizz to the proceedings as the troubled and troublesome sister too involved with her own career to see the toll this situation is
taking on Kate. Leah Charney brings compassion to the role of Irene, who thrives on being a nurturing mother hen. She plays it sweetly without ever becoming cloying. Between the writing, the performances and the direction, this production manages to keep its balance and avoids becoming maudlin. While there are many funny moments, the humour never mocks the serious illness being portrayed. You will remember Remember, Maggy? long after the performance ends. Remember, Maggy? is playing in the Studio Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge St., until Sunday, Feb. 8. For tickets, visit www.encoreshows.com or call 416-804-2722. injured in crash involving fire vehicle wOne
At least one person was taken to hospital following a collision involving a fire vehicle in North York Tuesday. The crash happened at Weston Road and Ormont Drive, two blocks south of Steeles Avenue, at around 12:30 p.m. Paramedics took at least one person to hospital with minor injuries. Police are investigating. North Yorkers at curling championships The Ontario Tankard currently under way in Ingersoll has two

teams with North York connections – including the defending champion. That would be Greg Balsdon, now curling out of Hamilton’s Glendale Golf and Country Club. He’s also a North York native who grew up in the area of Leslie and Lawrence. The other skip – John Epping – is a Peterborough native who is now a longtime North York resident and curling out of North York’s Donalda Club, although his new team is based out of Ajax. Balsdon shocked eight-time Tankard champ Glenn Howard last year, and Howard, shockingly, failed to qualify this year. Beagle, domestic short-haired cat seek new families Seniors groups Our pets of the month hail from Toronto Animal Services South shelter located adjacent to the Horse Palace on the Exhibition grounds. Meet Lou the beagle, who has spent most of his life in a backyard, and Emma, a friendly feline who came from a hoarding situation. Handsome Lou is an eight-year-old neutered beagle. Despite his age he has no plans to slow down any time soon; he’s got good energy, loves walks and new adventures. Sadly, staff feel Lou was a backyard dog and is owed lots of TLC, cuddles and couch time. When Lou first came to the shelter he was scared but he has come a long way and is ready for his forever family. Lou will need some training. He can get excited and jump on people and for this reason the shelter feels a home without small toddlers would be best. As with most beagles, Lou follows his nose and often pulls when he gets the scent of something interesting. Staff describe him as curious, sweet and a real charmer. Lou has been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated and microchipped. His identification number

packed. She has no known health issues, has been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated and microchipped. Emma’s identification number is A695741. For more information on Lou, Emma or other pets for adoption call 416338-6668 or see pets on the web at www.toronto.ca/ animalservices
lorraine houston critter chatter is A697313. Beautiful Emma is a one-year-old spayed domestic short-haired cat who came from a home with a “cat collector”. Staff describe her as social, affectionate, tidy and clean. She loves people and is good with other cats and is currently being housed with a couple of feline friends at the shelter. Emma has been waiting for a home since mid-November with bags

Ontario is accepting applications for the Seniors Community Grant Program to help seniors stay safe, active and engaged. The Seniors Community Grant Program, the first grant program in Ontario dedicated solely to seniors, was introduced to give seniors more opportunities to participate in their communities by providing funding to not-for-profit community groups for projects that encourage greater social inclusion, volunteerism and community engagement. Grants range from $500 to $8,000. Individuals who represent a seniors group, not-for-profit organizations, municipalities, local service boards and aboriginal groups are eligible to apply. Applications will be accepted until March 27 for projects that occur between June 15 and March 31, 2016. If you have any questions about the application process for the grant program, contact seniorscommunitygrant@ontario.ca or 1-844-SCG-2015 (1-844-724-2015).
