Two students from North York, one from Etobicoke recognized Serena Habib, Soheila Mosun and Seher Sarin are being recognized for inspiring change in their communities. The students were presented with certificates of recognition after being nominated for the Ontario Junior Citizen Awards.The awards are promoted through the 300 newspapers of the Ontario Community Newspapers Association, which Metroland Media Toronto is a member. Eligible nominees are between ages six to 17, and nominations are received through membership papers.Habib, 14, of North York is Grade 9

student at Senator O’Connor College School. Habib’s nominator calls her a, "passionate individual who is actively involved in her school, local and global community." "Serena can be described as kind, non-judgemental, empathetic student who wants to make a difference in the world," her nominator said.Adding Habib began the "Knit for Newborns" initiative almost a year ago.

The program is dedicated to helping save the lives of babies in third world countries while helping "marginalized senior citizens" through handmade hats and blankets.Etobicoke resident Mosun, 16, is a Grade 11 student at Appleby College in Oakville, Ont.Her nominator said she is driven to help youth, and is launch a youth movement organization called "Selfless 16."

Film project reveals Valentine’s secrets FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Joan Mactavish and her future husband, Ian, started out as friends when they both attended the University of Toronto’s Victoria University, she studying music and he, law.

But in their fourth year, friendship blossomed into something more serious and Ian, who couldn’t afford an engagement ring, gave Joan his fraternity pin as a sign of their commitment to one another.

Soon afterwards, Ian enlisted with the Irish Regiment and was stationed overseas during the Sec-

ond World War from August 1942 to December 1945.

"I waited until the end of the war for him," Joan said.

"I wrote him every day."

She still has the more than 1,000 letters she sent her beau tucked safely inside a decorative box in her unit at retirement home Revera near Don Mills Road and Lawrence Avenue.

Joan was one of 19 Revera residents who took part in the Age Is More film project, a partnership between the retirement home and Reel Youth, to help bridge the intergenerational gap and debunk stereotypes about ageism.

Young, budding filmmakers were paired with Revera residents to create short films guided by professional filmmakers from Reel Youth. The 10 films told stories of love and offered tips on how to make relationships succeed, and were screened at a gala Thursday, Feb. 9 at Donway Place Retirement Community.

Joan and Ian, then both 25, were married eight days after he came home from war and "lived happily ever after" until Ian’s death years ago, she said.

Joan, who will turn 97 in July, said her advice to young people for a success-

ful relationship centres on "knowing each other well and be friends first, if possible.

"When we married, we married forever," she said.

"I really hope (those views) haven’t changed."

Sashoya Shoya Oya, who worked on Joan’s film, said there is much to celebrate when it comes to older adults.

"We learn about a time period when we didn’t exist," she said. "Listen to their stories and learn. I wish I had the opportunity to keep my grandparents’ stories around."

Small, local efforts can make a big impact miles away Stories of crime, tragedy and hate often dominate the headlines and while it’s our job to accurately report on these events, the effect of its continual presence on readers is not lost on us.

That’s why this week we’re sharing a story across all our newspapers. Inspired by the efforts of residents in Etobicoke, it serves as a shining example of the good that exists in this world - and how seemingly small, local initiatives can make the greatest difference in the lives of others living thousands of miles away. Those are the stories worth celebrating.

Local hockey families donated gently used hockey gear to a collection by Rotary Clubs of Etobicoke and Palgrave, destined for First Nations youth in six northern Ontario reserves. Only in its second year, the drive netted 25 times more equipment than the first - a whopping 40,000 pounds of gear, thanks to the generosity of parents and kids here in Toronto.

Our reporter Cynthia Reason covered those initial efforts and was extended a special invitation to see the story through to its conclusion. She traveled with Rotary representatives and Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes to one of the reserves at Sandy Lake where 16 skids of hockey equipment was delivered to eagerly awaiting children. The detail that completed the experience? The Stanley Cup came too.

Described as a ’historic first’ by Chief Bart Meekis, the Cup’s arrival in the remote community served as a reminder to local youth that opportunity exists for them, to "be all you can be." And certainly, receiving hockey pads, helmets, skates, sticks and jerseys helped fuel local hockey dreams. Something that may have seemed out of reach is now possible for these kids, thanks to the generosity of Toronto residents. It was also made possible by one Sandy Lake teacher who connected with Rotary to facilitate the donation.

So we share this story to warm hearts. We share it to demonstrate how a small initiative can have a big, lasting impact in the lives of others. Those children will not forget the day the Stanley Cup arrived in their community, along with hockey equipment they couldn’t have afforded otherwise.

These are the kinds of efforts we like to celebrate when they come across our news desks, because Toronto’s got more than its share of bad news. The good is also there, but sometimes it needs a little help getting up into the spotlight.

Toronto’s immigrants learn their working rights When Pragosh Antonipillai was young, he and his cousins worked well over 40 hours a week at Tim Hortons.They didn’t get overtime, and didn’t ask. They worked 12 or 24 hours at a stretch when their downtown Toronto stores were short-handed.

"We would sleep on sugar bags in the back because that’s what we thought it means to be a good worker," Antonipillai recalls. For a first-generation Tamil-Canadian, this was normal, even expected, he says.

Antonipillai’s parents were proud; at 15 and 16 he was making more than his dad as a Canadian Tire cashier. But working 30 hours a week while in high school tired him out.

"People would assume I’m just this terrible stu-

His small group is a "diversity network" for the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, which also has volunteers from the Filipino, Chinese, Somali, Ethiopian and Eritrean communities.

The networks formed because unions weren’t getting into ethnic communities, and people from these ethnicities could sidestep communication barriers and suspicions, says Ram Selvarajah, a member of the Tamil network.

Concerns about New Canadians working in Toronto are well-founded: in a 2013 survey 20 per cent of Mandarin-speaking recent immigrants here weren’t paid minimum wage, and only half received paid public holidays.

"The myth immigrants are brought up to believe is you work 80 hours," says Selvarajah, adding young Tamils arriving here in the 1990s felt extra pressure to work.

says, so parents thought, "you were working or you were in trouble."

Antonipillai and Selvarajah say Toronto employers still "pit" recent immigrants who won’t insist on their rights against other Canadians.

They know immigrant women, in particular, "have less resources to fight back," adds Antonipillai, who argues 90 per cent Toronto’s kitchen staff are Tamil for the same reason.

Selvarajah meets seniors working in Tamil stores for $5 an hour, under the table, looking on their employers as friends. He tells them standing up for yourself, "isn’t a betrayal, it’s actually the right thing to do."

Executive Committee voted to defer $4-million streetscaping plan for North York RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Advocates for a streetscaping plan for the North York section of Yonge Street are crying foul following a last-minute decision to defer funding for the project until 2018.

Toronto Council will ultimately decide at its budget meeting this week whether to uphold the decision by the mayor’s executive committee to withhold $4 million in funding for the Reimagining Yonge Project due to safety concerns. Proponents of the project fear if the money isn’t there the plan - which would see traffic lanes removed from Yonge and bike lanes installed along with other improvements south of Sheppard Avenue to north of Finch Avenue - could be scrapped altogether.

"Everyone is shocked (by the executive committee’s decision)," said cycling activist Ron Hart from the group Bike North York.

Construction for Reimagining Yonge is scheduled to begin in 2018, with detailed design work taking place before that.

The project has had multiple public consultations, with the last meeting taking place in late September of last year. In addition to trimming available road space down to two lanes, plus left turn lanes, in either direction, the plan calls for widened sidewalks, more trees and other improvements intended to enhance the pedestrian and cycling experience for one of the Toronto’s fastest-growing urban corridors.

Filion said concerns about traffic were unfounded, even with lane space being removed.

He admitted there could be "short-term disruption", but pointed out service roads on the east side of Yonge provide sufficient access to new condo builds.

And he said the lanes to be removed are currently used for parking and not live traffic.

"The traffic will flow fine with three lanes," he said.

Filion said plenty of parking is available in the area via sidestreet or underground lots.

"The grid street alignment north of Finch Avenue makes it easy to get further north using nearby residential streets," he said.

Should the project be deferred, it’s unknown what would happen to $2 million in funding from the federal government for the project.

Youth walk-in mental health program expands services JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com From bullying to depression to anxiety, the ’What’s Up’ walkin program has helped countless children and teens deal with stress, mental illness and addictions counselling.

Now, thanks to $200,000 in funding from the Echo Foundation and the Royal Bank of Canada, the program is set to widen its reach.

Already operating out of six locations across the city - What’s Up walk-in clinics are located in south and northeast Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, York and downtown - the service is expanding to support youth aged 19 to 24 and add Tagalog, Cantonese, Mandarin, Farsi and Tamil language services.

"We had previously only been serving young people up to the age of 18," said What’s Up walk-in lead agency network manager David O’Brien in a recent interview. "We wanted to make sure we were there for young people once they were past that age."

The service is free of charge, requires no referrals or appointments and allows young people to speak with trained professionals about some of the issues they’re facing. Most sessions last about an hour, and many clients are return visitors.

"About eight per cent of the people we see are dealing with suicidal thoughts," O’Brien said.

"It’s something they need help

He added that many What’s Up walk-in clients come from marginalized or racialized communities, which makes having counsellors working in several languages an important step forward.

Demographic studies

showed that certain languages are more common in some pockets of the city, allowing the agency to allocate its resources appropriately.

By allowing clients to speak in their native tongues, the clinics will break down a serious barrier to mental health care.

"We noticed some people had difficulty using translators in a confidential therapy setting," O’Brien said. "And often, even when the children and youth did speak English, it can be isolating for a parent to have a child who’s going through a mental health issue."

Come for a visit. But maybe don’t move in.

Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Elizabeth Dowdeswell and the Walrus Foundation an-

nounced the competition on Jan. 6, and those 18 years of age and over are urged to suggest ideas to tackle problems regarding governance, environmental stewardship, social cohesion, reconciliation, inclusive prosperity, and scientific and technological innovation.

The Visionaries Prize competition is being supported by the provincial government through

its Ontario150 program, an offshoot of Canada’s sesquicentennial. Submissions should take a long-range look at improving the lives of Ontarians over the next 150 years by tackling some of the deepest challenges the province faces.

"Disruptive technologies. Political detachment. Poverty, water shortages and food insecurity. These are just some of the po-

tential challenges facing us in the coming years. To achieve a world that works for everyone will require bold and creative ideas," Dowdeswell said.

Submissions are due March 6, with finalists selected and invited to present their ideas at a series of events in September.

Write your six-word story about ’The Six’ Toronto residents are invited to take part in a massive art project describing the Six using their own six words.

The My City, My Six (MCM6) initiative asks participants to come up with a six-word story that highlights what Toronto has to offer. MCM6 will be part of the city’s "TO Canada with Love" contributions to the nationwide Canada 150 celebration, and will also be part of this year’s Cultural Hotspot, which takes place in east Toronto.

Toronto poet laureate Anne Michaels has already contributed her own six-word story - "We belong where love finds us" - to the collection of stories. Others have already begun chiming in on Twitter using the #MyCityMySix hashtag.

Six local arts service organizations - Arts Etobicoke, East End Arts, Lakeshore Arts, North York Arts, Scarborough Arts and UrbanArts - will offer workshops and word-a-thons around the concept from March through May. Select submissions will be displayed at an exhibition which will be shown at various sites across Toronto, including City Hall, TTC stations, the six local arts service organizations, and other public spaces.

UTSC, York Downsview food servers on indefinite strike MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Cafeteria workers at University of Toronto Scarborough are on an indefinite strike, and their colleagues at York University Downsview are ready to join them on the picket line this week.

Both campuses saw oneday walk-outs during a previous week by workers organized under UNITE Here Local 75 and employed by Aramark, a U.S.based contractor.

Around 70 Aramark employees launched a strike Thursday, Feb. 9, on the Scarborough campus because their earlier actions had no effect, said David Sanders, a spokesperson for the local.

"People are still stuck making poverty wages, and neither the university nor Aramark have done anything to address that,"

he said.

Most of Aramark’s UTSC servers make $11.50 an hour, just above minimum wage. At Downsview, most are making $12.21, but servers at U of T’s downtown St. George campus who work directly for the university get $20 an hour, which the union considers a "living wage" in Toronto.

The union said the approximately 200 employees it represents at Downsview will also go on an indefinite strike, as of Thursday, Feb. 16.

The UTSC administration said the strike there will close some campus food outlets and reduce hours at others, but there will be other options available for food.

"We see these employees on campus every day -they’re a part of our community and we appreciate what they do," Don Campbell, a UTSC spokesperson,

said last week.

"It’s also their legal right to strike and we fully respect that process, but since contract negotiations are between Aramark and its employees, we won’t get directly involved."

Aramark also said it respects the rights of its employees to strike. "We continue to be available to bargain in good faith and hope to reach an agreement that works for everyone," Karen Cutler, a vice-president for the company, added Thursday.

Sanders said students’ initial reaction to the strike at UTSC have been "very positive."

The U of T campus on Military Trail also maintains a web page, www.utsc.utoronto.ca/ programs/utscfood, which is keeping track of operating hours for its various food outlets.

Get the skinny on spring/summer registration DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Registration season for spring/summer recreation programming is coming up in Toronto, and parents and recreation program users will be happy to know the city has made improvements to its customer experience.

Registration for spring/ summer programming starts at 7 a.m. on the following days: • Saturday, March 4 Etobicoke York district • Sunday, March 5 Scarborough district • Tuesday, March 7 North York district • Wednesday, March 8 Toronto and East York district The most popular programs will fill up within minutes.

The city has improved its online system by increasing server capacity, which al-

lows more people to use the system simultaneously.

This will reduce the wait times people have experienced in the past.

Plus, officials have improved the user interface to make searching for programs and registering easier.

"We’ve been working over the last year to improve the overall experience that customers have," said Howie Dayton, director of community recreation at the city’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department.

The city will also have more staff at its call centres with longer call centre hours for customers to register by phone on registration days.

But, it’s still important that anyone planning to register for programming plans ahead of registration day.

This doesn’t include things such as summer leisure drop-in programs hap-

pening at pools, community centres or gymnasiums across the city.

Black History Month was celebrated at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute Monday, Feb. 13.

Students from the Keele Street and Finch Avenue area school, along with students from surrounding schools, community residents, Police Chief Mark Saunders, Mayor John Tory and Toronto District School Board dignitaries came together for the celebration.

The event included student performances and a keynote speech from entrepreneur and community leader Belinda Kamshuka.

Toronto police said the smartphone and its case were mailed to North York’s 33 Division by "an anonymous person" Jan.

That the Stanley Cup would come to a remote place like this, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of it,” Meekis said shortly after parading the Cup around Sandy Lake on the back of his pick-up truck, trailed by an escort of 16 flag-waving, skidoo-driving members of the Sandy Lake Canadian Rangers.

While Lord Stanley’s 22-hour stay in Sandy Lake was widely celebrated as a “historic first”, Meekis pledged it most certainly won’t mark the Cup’s last long voyage to the remote flyin community nearly 1,500 kms northwest of Toronto.

“It will be back up here again in 2020, but next time it will be one of our young hockey players bringing it north as a Stanley Cup champion – hopefully with the Canadiens,” the Montreal fan said with a determined grin.

“To us, the Stanley Cup promotes education, it promotes discipline, and it also promotes

that you can be all you can be – and that’s something our kids need to see.”

While the Cup’s arrival provided plenty of incentive to young hockey players in Sandy Lake to strive for NHL greatness, the accompanying delivery of 16 skids of gently used hockey gear collected by the Rotary Clubs of Etobicoke and Palgrave – and shipped free-of-charge courtesy Wasaya Airways and the Grimes’ brothers Etobicokebased logistics company, MGA International – brought with it the means with which to fulfill a hockey dream that, for many, would’ve otherwise been out of reach.

Freight costs to communities like Sandy Lake, which are only accessible by land via ice roads for a few short weeks in the winter, drive the price of even the most basic of goods up at least threefold. In a community where even a 24-case of no-name bottled water sells for $27.79, that means the price of already-costly hockey equipment becomes prohibitively expensive for most families.

“A lot of our youth want to get on the ice, but can’t afford the skates, which is sad because people here go hard for hockey – they a b s o -

lutely love it,” said Jenn Elwell, the now “super famous” teacher who arranged the hockey donation with Rotary Etobicoke’s Laura Latham after stumbling upon a story about the club’s hockey drive on Facebook.

“So for me, seeing my kids walk out of the gym today with skates in their hands and big smiles on their faces just melted my heart. It was so beautiful, because I know how much it means to them.”

Pittsburgh Penguins superfan Derek Monias, 13, not only walked away from the distribution event at Thomas Fiddler Memorial Elementary School last week with a hockey bag stuffed with new gear, he was also able to cross a key item off his bucket list.

“I’ve always wanted to see the Stanley Cup in person and now I have.

It’s every hockey player’s dream to one day achieve winning it,” he said with a shy smile.

“This day, we all feel happy.

The people that brought the Cup here have put a smile on everybody’s faces here in Sandy Lake and made them feel good inside.”

NYGH receives award for eCare initiative North York General Hospital (NYGH) has been awarded the HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence for its eCare initiative.

The Leslie Street and Hwy. 401 area hospital is the first acute care hospital in Canada to be presented with the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) award, which is awarded annually to about 50 hospitals worldwide.

NYGH was awarded for its eCare initiative, a multiyear, hospital-wide health care information technology (IT) transformation strategy.

"The challenge of implementing change of this scope and scale was immense, but possible, thanks to great teamwork and a constant focus on the quality and safety benefits we are celebrating today," Dr. Tim Rutledge, president and CEO of NYGH, said in a release. Don’t believe the budget hype It’s budget time in Toronto, a magical period when abstract numbers get bandied about like essential truths, and political announcements are rife with promises of funding to come.

Take the TTC, which saw a hit to its revenue in 2016 thanks to lower than anticipated ridership. The TTC, which had to trim from its already pulped operating budget thanks to a mayoral edict, and liquidate its cash reserves just to reduce its projected deficit for this year.

That same TTC will receive an $80-million funding boost to its annual subsidy from the city, it was announced this week by Mayor John Tory with a beaming Josh Colle, chair of the TTC, at his side.

The money stands as part of a "historic" investment in transit, another glowing example of this mayor’s commitment to get the city moving, say his

This is all true. If Toronto Council votes in favour this week, the TTC will have received an even higher operating subsidy from city coffers, one even more generous than last year’s record allotment.

Never mind whether Toronto should get more of a hand from other levels of government for running one of the largest transit systems on the continent this is still a lot of money.But here’s where the sleight of hand comes in: even with all that cash

threatening to burst the TTC’s wallet George Costanza-style, you the regular transit taker aren’t likely to see a requisite boost in the form of better service.

The reality is no one or two or even three-time boost to spending is going to create a rush of new service, no matter what elected officials say, not when there’s little guarantee the same funding levels will stay in place for in the future.

If Torontonians want a consistent amount of service befitting a major city’s transit system, they need to demand consistent fundings, not one-time payoffs.

You get the service you pay for.
