RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A spokesperson for an advocacy group said the upcoming closure of the Branson Ambulatory Care Centre represents a major loss for the Bathurst-Finch community. Kenneth Schafer said he’s unsure how North York General Hospital will be able to effectively treat patients following the shuttering of the Centre, located at 555 Finch Ave. W., by 2019. The hospital had announced earlier this year it will close down Branson, which it leased from Advent Corporation for 19 years, and transfer services to its main hospital campus and other locations within the area. "The (Westminster-Branson) community has come to rely on the services the centre offers all in one spot," said Schafer, cochair of the Branson Community Action Group (BCAG) which met l See URGENT page 20

Why I won’t be there for the fireworks Rebeka Tabobondung Indigenkaus (my name is) Wasausking Ndonjaba (I come from) Amik Dodem (I am Beaver clan) This simple statement took me 40 years to learn. This is who I am — but I had to fight like hell to figure it out. I grew up in over 13 towns and cities across the country and experienced the public education system and its imagined Canadian identity in every one of those places. Yep — I learned the propaganda that every Canadian my age learned: We are a nation built on universal values of democracy, human rights and environmentalism intimately connected through a "mosaic" of diversity, a northern climate and pristine landscape. Let’s get real … all Canadians must question the legitimacy of these "imaginary" claims due to the historical hatred directed toward the First Peoples of this land and the ongoing lack of awareness, education, and movement building toward reconciliation and the forging of reciprocal relationships based on equality and respect. Just today I was on Facebook calling for the resignation of Sen. Lynn Beyak, who said earlier this year that "good deeds" and "remarkable works" on the part of well-meaning residential school officials have been ignored in favour of more negative reports by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Just yesterday I was donating mon-

ey to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the relatives of Barbara Kentner, an indigenous woman living in Thunder Bay who was the victim of a drive-by assault in January 2017 by a white man who shouted, “I got one,” after throwing a very large trailer hitch at her body from a moving vehicle. My challenge is to answer the call of one of Canada’s most worthy senators, the former chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee who, in response to Beyak’s statements during a public forum in Ottawa on missing and murdered indigenous women, asked Canadians: “Why can’t you always remember this?" He was referring to the deliberate amnesia that Canadians have when they ‘imagine’ who they are. “Why can’t we remember and honour the truth of our nation ... this is about memorializing those people who have been the victims of a great wrong." I’m remembering who and what Canada actually is … and therefore I’m imagining what we could become. A confederation that chooses not to forget its past - but rather memorializes it in order to imagine and build something better. How about Kanata 150? Acknowledging the rich history already embedded deep in the land that includes the principle that rights, equity and respect should belong to all. A day in the life - Being indigenous today

In this year of Truth and Reconciliation, this 150th year of Confederation, we talked with a few descendants of the original residents of Canada (Kanata) to ask: "What does it mean to be an indigenous person in Ontario today?" (Top left) Bill Trodd and Crystal Tabobandung read a story their grandchildren just before dinner in their Magnetawan First Nation home. The two youngest of the blended family’s children read and finish after school chores. (Top right) The opening leg of the First Nation Water Walk around Lake Simcoe raises awareness of the importance of fresh water. Patricia Watts of Wabigoon Lake First Nation has the honour of collecting the water to be carried on their journey. (Middle) Blayne McLeod moved to Toronto to pursue a dream career in the arts. Raised in Bigstone Cree Nation reserve in Wabasca, Alta., the 26-year-old relocated to Toronto three years ago and joined the Centre for Indigenous Theatre. (Bottom) Award-winning actor/producer Jennifer Podemski is currently in production of Future History (APTN), a documentary series about indigenous knowledge and history. ’She would sit by the hour and watch the children play.’

Elisa died last Halloween at age 22. In memory of the young woman who touched the lives of so many in her Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue community, a commemorative bench was installed in late May from funds collected in the neighbourhood honouring the life and legacy of Elisa in the park she loved to spend time in. And fittingly, the bench is located right where Elisa’s wheelchair would park, overlooking the area where children play. "I’m really touched," Elisa’s mother, Elisabeth Linton, said of her daughter’s bench. "Our family and caregivers would take Elisa to the park and she would sit by the hour and watch children play. The first time I saw the bench, I cried." Elisabeth, who provided around-the-clock care for Elisa, founded the Sanfilip-

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Elisa Linton loved to watch kids play in Gwendolen Park, situated steps from her home. She would sit in her wheelchair for hours and take in the simple pleasures of squealing, active youngsters run, laugh and make friends. Elisa was born with Sanfilippo syndrome, a rare, terminal, recessive autosomal genetic disease and one of seven mucopolysaccharide disorders. Combined, the four types of Sanfilippo presents in about one in 70,000 births. Symptoms tend to show in preschool years in the form of developmental delays, with the child ultimately losing the ability to walk, talk and eat on their own. There is no cure or treatment, and most people born with Sanfilippo live into their teens.

– Elisabeth Linton medical research, and clinical trials began in May 2016 with the hopes of finding a cure - and, as it happened, the first child treated was named Eliza. "Elisa lived many years longer than doctors thought she would," Elisabeth said, adding she lived long enough to be a bridesmaid in the wedding of her sister, Jessica, in September. "I put it down to her love of life and willpower to see results with treatment. She couldn’t verbalize or communicate her thoughts, but I believe she understood a lot." Life without Elisa has been bittersweet, her mother said, noting "there

is a huge void in daily life without having Elisa with us. "She was one of my best friends," Elisabeth said. "I shared so much with her. I adored caring for her. I miss her with every ounce of my being. But the sweet part is, I know she’s in heaven and I know she’s not suffering. That trumps anything else I would want." Tracy Keenan, a member of Elisabeth’s foundation, wanted to honour Elisa with a permanent tribute. The West Lansing neighbourhood didn’t hesitate to open their wallets, and the $2,500 needed for the bench was quickly collected. "The bench is a place we can sit and remember Elisa," she said. ABOUT US

We won’t be intimidated A group of disgruntled city councillors in Brampton seem to be confusing freedom of the press with freedom from the press. Angry with recent coverage by the local newspaper, some councillors are proposing a motion to scrutinize the media’s questioning of elected officials. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to intimidate reporters. The motion calls for all media inquiries to be posted on the city website along with responses. Councillors want future meeting agendas to include time to respond to media coverage. Meanwhile, at least one member of Brampton council has taken to Twitter, suggesting the local paper isn’t providing "real news." If it sounds reminiscent of the antics of President Donald Trump and his staff, that’s because there’s a strong and troubling parallel. This is all in reaction to assertive reporting that is critical of the city’s leadership. Councillors say they have put the press on notice. Such a statement demonstrates a blatant disregard for, or ignorance of, the checks and balances already strongly entrenched in the Canadian media system. Accountability starts with the news outlet itself. Complaints can be made directly to a journalist, editor, or publisher. If the response is unsatisfactory, individuals can contact the press council. The National NewsMedia Council deals with matters concerning fairness of coverage, relevance, balance and accuracy. Its members (including this newspaper) abide by its decisions. It’s a free and open process for the public. When media make a mistake, we own it very publicly. That’s not something everyone can say. And there is the law. Canada has very strict libel laws. These laws protect the reputation of individuals and organizations from false and derogatory remarks. Media are bound by these laws. There have been no formal complaints made regarding recent coverage of Brampton. Instead, this is about a group of councillors lashing out because they are upset with what strong local reporting has unearthed. These councillors forget that media are not accountable to elected officials. Media are accountable to the public, the same group whose money these councillors are spending. Claiming to put the press on notice is a poorly disguised attack on the fundamental freedoms laid out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Councillors are trying to stifle critical voices and control our free, independent and responsible media. Any attempt by elected officials to limit the free flow of information is an attack on the basic democratic principles our society upholds. It won’t work. Metroland Media and all its newsrooms will continue to hold our elected officials to account and report stories that are in the best interest of our readers.

Millennials don’t want suburban Toronto dream Ken Greenberg builds cities, or rather, rebuilds them. And he told an audience of Liberals in Scarborough it’s time to rebuild Toronto’s inner suburbs. Redesigning them will be a "wrenching transition," Greenberg says, and our biggest project of the next two generations. A generation ago, urbanists like James Howard Kunstler predicted North America’s runaway suburban dream would start to collapse when oil became unaffordable. Oil’s now cheap. But Greenberg told the Liberal faithful we must transform large parts of Toronto, or our city won’t stay successful. "Downtown poverty was exported to Scarborough and Etobicoke because of where people prefer to

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto live," the University of Toronto professor says. Growth in its suburbs outpaced Toronto’s core until 2006. Then the script flipped. Millennials have a new North American dream, Greenberg says. They don’t want to live in spread-out suburbs where nothing mixes with anything else. They want to live where they work, walk to get gro-

ceries. They don’t even want a car. They’ve gone downtown, and companies follow them there. Future success will go to Toronto’s mixed-use neighbourhoods. Where does that leave the poorer areas of Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York? Greenberg says we must reverse engineer our wide surburban roads back into lively, walkable streets with more public places where we can meet. Toronto’s multicultural identity is at risk otherwise, because the suburban pattern "keeps people segregated." Surface parking lots and parts of hydro corridors become new mixed use neighbourhoods, a weakness becoming a strength. Can we do this with the suburban politicians we

have? No, probably. Many of them fought, and still fight, to save their "single-family neighbourhoods" against renters, roomers, townhouses, midrise condos, offices for midwives on a major road, or street parking, because certain long-time residents in houses - the people they listen to most - don’t want change. But unless Greenberg is wrong, big changes must come, or those neighbourhoods will stagnate as Toronto’s core becomes unaffordable. He was speaking to almost 100 federal party members. Some may become city councillors or MPPs. Let’s hope they’re brave. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

COMMUNITY

All we need is #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE Goal is to combat homophobia and transphobia FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Adam Zivo is bringing back his #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE LGBTQ+ photo project to this year’s Toronto Pride festivities. Launched last year in Toronto in response to the Orlando Pulse nightclub mass shooting in June 2016, the goal of the project is to normalize LGBTQ+ relationships by producing positive images of them, Zivo said, adding the photos are then distributed to participants through social media. #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE will set up shop Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 at VillageFest, a community-oriented LGBTQ+ festival organized by the Church Wellesley Village BIA. The Toronto-based photographer, who lives downtown and grew up in central Etobicoke, is also behind the "They’re People, Not Terrorists" social media campaign featuring people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, which he created earlier this year in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed migration ban. The Mirror caught up with Zivo to talk about this year’s #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE project, and what his goals are for it.

Q: This is the second year for the #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE photography project. What’s new this year?

Save 60%

A: This year I’ve decided to include an educational element to the project. I’ve partnered with the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity to produce brochures explaining the history of Pride festivals, and we will be distributing them both at our booth and throughout VillageFest, which is hosting us this year. This project has proven to be popular in the community, so I want to use it as a platform to draw attention to other organizations and raise awareness about specific issues. We chose the history of Pride festivals since queer youth aren’t always informed about the context of their rights, which is something that ought to be changed. Q: What was the response to the project last year? What are the goals for this year? A: The project was very popular last year. Anecdotally speaking, it seemed as if everyone was aware of it and we had people reach out to us from all across the province. We had people tell us that the project struck a chord with them, that they appreciated its sentimentality and positivity. Much of #LLL is run through social media, so we were able to track how people engaged with us. Reassuringly, the numbers matched our experiences. We ended up activating the project at Ottawa Capital Pride, and were popular there too. Based on the community’s response, VillageFest, which also hosted us last year, decided to make "#LOVEISLOVEISLOVE" their theme for this year

Adam Zivo/photo

and hired me to facilitate that. It seems that everyone we’ve worked with so far has been happy with us, which is great. It gives me hope that we expand this project and meet the obvious appetite for feel-good initiatives in a tumultuous time. I have two main goals this year. The first is to expand the number of Pride festivals that we’re present at. The second is to take the project’s brand and find ways to leverage it to concretely benefit the LGBTQ+ community, whether that means pursuing educational initiatives like the one I mentioned earlier, or finding ways to

Q: Have you taken the project outside of the city? A: We went to Ottawa last year and it seems promising that we’ll be in Ottawa again this year. This spring I was working in Mumbai on a long-term contract and was planning on activating the project there, which would have been amazing since homophobia is a major issue in India homo-

sexuality is a criminal offence there, for example. My position in Mumbai turned out to be a poor fit, so I left before I could make an Indian #LLL a reality. It was a disappointment, but that’s life. As of now we’re in talks with several other cities and seeing if we can make the logistics work. I’m very optimistic about our Canadian prospects.

Q:

Are you hoping to make #LOVEISLOVEISLOVE a permanent staple at Pride?

A:

I’d love to make #LLL a staple of Pride festivals all throughout North America.

OVO, which Toronto recording artist Drake is an ambassador of, will open its fourth retail concept store, and second in the city, this summer at the Dufferin Street and Hwy. 401 mall. North York born and raised Michael Rojas missed his chance to defend his national kick-boxing title in Toronto last month. And next month, the 19-yearold amateur fighter will be missing his flight to South Africa for an intercontinental competition. Injury, it would seem, has struck at the most inopportune of times, but the Jane Street and Wilson Avenue area fighter is not worried. "Obviously, it’s very disappointing that I can’t compete and represent my country," he said at Hook Up Muay Thai where he trains. "All fighters have to overcome adversity and that’s what makes a champion - overcoming adversity and taking the negative out of every situation and turning it into a positive. I feel like that’s what determines a champion." Rojas, whose focus is Muay Thai, a Thailand-based martial arts discipline, competes in the 85kilo class. He’s been fighting for four years and competing for two. Last May, he won national gold in kick-boxing. He also won gold at the 2016 Ontario Summer Games, and hopes to eventually turn pro. He hurt his knee in early last month during training. Hook Up owner and trainer Theodora Pistiolis expects it’s a meniscus tear, but won’t know for sure until he has an MRI in July. Until then, the young athlete has to wait. It’s the waiting during recovery that can be the hardest part of an injury, says Toronto-based mental performance consultant Dr. Peter Papadogiannis who works with injured athletes. The longer the duration of an injury, the harder it is for athletes

to recover psychologically, he said. Papadogiannis, who has not met Rojas, said every athlete is different, but most athletes need to build their confidence, which they can only do during training and practice. "The longer the injury, the more uncertainty there is. For some athletes, being away for a day or two is tough," he said. Athletes suffer a huge letdown when they are injured, there are questions of how long they will be away from their sport and concerns over how good they will be when they return - it’s all a lot to think about. Athletes will take fewer risks when they return, he added, as the injury is on their mind. "You have to trust your body and mind, especially in pressure situations, and this young man is, unfortunately, going to have build that trust in his body and mind as he comes back." But, there is a silver lining to injury in sport. "When you’re injured, you have an opportunity to be able to assess who you are within your sport. Athletes don’t have a lot of those opportunities because they’re so busy trying to build up that skill and they get ready for competitions," Papadogiannis said. He said athletes should take that time to think about how they can improve. Rojas said he’s relying on his support network of coaches, teammates and family to deal with his injury. He can’t compete, but continues working on his boxing. "This is just a minor inconvenience. I will be back and I will be back stronger than ever," Rojas said.

FOCUS

Scrap it! BEHIND THE SCENES: Work starts early in the morning at the Canada Iron & Metal Co. All manner of vehicles pull in to the 1.75 acre lot at the north-east corner of Jane and Dundas streets, with their refuse aboard. After being weighed and paid the scrap is unloaded in a heap in front of a crane

equipped with an electromagnetic grappler, and the sorting begins. Canada Iron & Metal, after all, is a recycler and without a place for everything and everything in its place, nothing would get done. Brass, copper, stainless steel, e-waste and more find their way to bins and eventually out of the lot, to dealers and manufacturers for re-purposing.

with NYGH leadership this week to discuss the closure. "If services are spread out, they will be more difficult to access." Last week, the hospital closed Branson’s Urgent Care Centre, which treats non-life threatening injuries, and transferred the clinic to its renovated emergency room at the main campus, located at Leslie Street and Hwy. 401. Also moving to the main NYGH campus are Branson’s radiology department and joint assessment centre. The hospital also agreed to set up a temporary "primary care clinic" within Branson to serve patients who don’t have a family physician, which will operate until the facility closes. Schafer said the closing of the centre also spells the end of medical professionals located in the same building "networking" on

treatment options. "If you have a broken arm, you could get an X-ray and put it in a cast," he said. "I’m not sure that it will be possible now." He’s also concerned the transfer of some 22,000 annual users of the urgent care centre to NYGH’s already busy emergency room will result in lengthy waits for treatment. "The hospital claims it can duplicate the level of service offered at Branson, but we believe people are going to be forced to wait in the emergency room for hours to be seen by a doctor," said Schafer. In a statement, the hospital confirmed the closure of the Branson Urgent Care Centre, which took place June 1. "We are all in agreement that enhancing access to care is important and we will continue to work with key stakeholders, including the community and our Local Health Integration

Network (LHIN), to find ways to best meet the needs of the Westminster-Branson community," reads the statement from NYGH CEO Tim Rutledge. NYGH insisted last year local residents won’t be overly impacted by the closure of the urgent care centre, providing numbers to The Mirror indicating a near-double digit drop in patient visits from 2010 to 2016. That drop, coupled with the expense required to renovate Branson’s aging facilities and the fact Advent wants to redevelop the site, makes it necessary to close the facility, said the hospital. It’s not yet disclosed where services still offered at Branson, including mental health, cataract, and prostate treatments, will be relocated once the Ambulatory Care Centre fully closes. -with files from Fannie Sunshine
